The hydrogenation of nitroarenes to produce the corresponding amines using dihydrogen as reducing agent has an important industrial role, since it allows to obtain important added-value products. This reaction needs the help of a catalyst to proceed. Many catalysts have been already tested and studied. Most of them are based on noble metals supported on metal oxides. These catalysts perform well, but they are expensive and thus, alternative systems are needed. In this context, cobalt-based catalysts have emerged as adequate alternatives, despite cobalt nanoparticles per se are not very active for this reaction. A way to improve the catalytic activity of cobalt nanoparticles is by supporting them on a support with functional groups that are able to change their intrinsic properties and to enhance their catalytic properties. In this sense, N-containing carbons are promising candidates to be used as support, since nitrogen functionalities may modify the catalytic properties of cobalt. In this work, cobalt nanoparticles supported on N-doped activated carbons have been prepared and studied as catalysts for the hydrogenation of 1-chloro-4-nitrobencene to the corresponding chloro-aniline. It is demonstrated that the catalytic activity is enhanced by the presence of nitrogen species in the support. When the temperature of the catalyst activation treatment (reduction under flowing hydrogen) is increased, the catalytic activity increases drastically in the presence of nitrogen functionalities on the support. The catalysts have been characterised by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopi (XPS) and N2 adsorption at 77 K. We studied the vapour-phase oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of ethyl lactate with air to give ethyl pyruvate over V2O5/TiO2 catalysts in a fixed-bed reactor. The nature of the vanadia species is changed by varying the vanadium surface density, and the corresponding structure of the VOx species was determined by XRD, UV-vis spectroscopy, XPS and H2-TPR. Monomeric and isolated vanadia species dominate at lower vanadium surface densities. As the surface density increases, two-dimensional polyvanadates and bulk-like vanadia crystallites become predominant. The activity per vanadium decreases with increasing vanadium surface density, indicating that the monomeric VOx species is better for pyruvate production and that the V–O–Ti bonds play an important role in the ODH of ethyl lactate. This is also confirmed by the superior catalytic performance of V2O5/TiO2 compared to vanadium supported on MgO, Al2O3, ZrO2 and CeO2. In situ DRIFT spectroscopy coupled with mass analysis shows that the reaction can involve three possible adsorption modes of ethyl lactate on the V2O5/TiO2 surface. Under anaerobic conditions, 2-hydroxypropionate forms, giving ethyl acetate as the major product. Conversely, under aerobic conditions, oxygen that is chemisorbed on V2O5/TiO2 is active and easily replenished from the gas phase, converting the ethyl-propionate-2-oxide intermediate into ethyl pyruvate.

Offsetting the impact of human activities on the biogeochemical cycle of mercury has become necessary for a sustainable planet. Herein, we report the development of a water-stable and eco-friendly metal–organic framework, which has the formula {Cu4II[(S,S)-methox]2}·5H2O (1), where methox is bis[(S)-methionine]oxalyl diamide. Its features include narrow functional channels decorated with thioalkyl chains, which are able to capture HgCl2 from aqueous media in an efficient, selective, and rapid manner. The conscious design effort in terms of size, shape, and reactivity of the channels results in extremely efficient immobilization of HgCl2 guest species in a very stable conformation, similar to that of the enzyme mercury reductase. Thus, 1 enables the highly efficient removal of toxic HgCl2 from aqueous media and reduces the [Hg2+] concentration from the dangerous level of 10 ppm to acceptable limits of below 2 ppb in drinking water. The unusual combination of a low-cost straightforward synthetic procedure and high stability under environmental conditions, together with its ability to efficiently and rapidly remove poisonous mercury ions, places 1 among the most attractive adsorbents reported to date for the purification of contaminated water.

Heterogeneous single-site catalysts consist of isolated, well-defined, active sites that are spatially separated in a given solid and, ideally, structurally identical. In this review, the potential of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as platforms for the development of heterogeneous single-site catalysts is reviewed thoroughly. In the first part of this article, synthetic strategies and progress in the implementation of such sites in these two classes of materials are discussed. Because these solids are excellent playgrounds to allow a better understanding of catalytic functions, we highlight the most important recent advances in the modelling and spectroscopic characterization of single-site catalysts based on these materials. Finally, we discuss the potential of MOFs as materials in which several single-site catalytic functions can be combined within one framework along with their potential as powerful enzyme-mimicking materials. The review is wrapped up with our personal vision on future research directions.

Pt and Pt/Sn catalysts supported on polypyrrole (PPy) have been prepared using Ar plasma to reduce the metal precursors dispersed on the polymer. The PPy support was synthesized by chemical polymerization of pyrrole with FeCl3·6H2O, this leading to the conducting form of the polymer (conductimetric measurements). The Ar plasma treatment produced a partial reduction of platinum ions, anchored as platinum chloro-complexes to the PPy chain, into metallic platinum. A homogeneous distribution of Pt and Sn nanoparticles was observed by TEM. Activity of the PPy-supported catalysts was evaluated in the reduction of aqueous nitrate with H2 at room temperature. Nitrate concentration in water below the maximum acceptable level of 50 mg L−1 was achieved with all catalysts. However, considering not only efficiency in nitrate reduction, but also minimized concentrations of undesired nitrite and ammonium, the monometallic Pt catalyst seems to be the most promising one.

Supported metals are traditionally prepared by impregnating a support material with the metal precursor solution, followed by reduction in hydrogen at elevated temperatures. In this study, a polymeric support has been considered. Polypyrrole (PPy) has been chemically synthesized using FeCl3 as a doping agent, and it has been impregnated with a H2PtCl6 solution to prepare a catalyst precursor. The restricted thermal stability of polypyrrole does not allow using the traditional reduction in hydrogen at elevated temperature, and chemical reduction under mild conditions using sodium borohydride implies environmental concerns. Therefore, cold RF plasma has been considered an environmentally friendly alternative. Ar plasma leads to a more effective reduction of platinum ions in the chloroplatinic complex anchored onto the polypyrrole chain after impregnation than reduction with sodium borohydride, as has been evidenced by XPS. The increase of RF power enhanced the effectiveness of the Ar plasma treatment. A homogeneous distribution of platinum nanoparticles has been observed by TEM after the reduction treatment with plasma. The Pt/polypyrrol catalyst reduced by Ar plasma at 200 watts effectively catalyzed the aqueous reduction of nitrates with H2 to yield N2, with a very low selectivity to undesired nitrites and ammonium by-products.
