The local coordination environment of single atom catalysts (SACs) often determines their catalytic performance. To understand these metal-support interactions, we prepared Pt SACs on cerium dioxide (CeO 2 ) cubes, octahedra and rods, with well-structured exposed crystal facets. The CeO 2 crystals were characterized by SEM, TEM, pXRD, and N 2 sorption, confirming the shape-selective synthesis, identical bulk structure, and variations in specific surface area, respectively. EPR, XPS, TEM and XANES measurements showed differences in the oxygen vacancy density following the trend rods > octahedra > cubes. AC-HAADF-STEM, XPS and CO-DRIFTS measurements confirmed the presence of only single Pt 2+ sites, with different surface platinum surface concentrations. We then compared the performance of the three catalysts in ammonia borane hydrolysis. Precise monitoring of reaction kinetics between 30-80 °C gave Arrhenius plots with hundreds of data points. All plots showed a clear inflection point, the temperature of which (rods > octahedra > cubes) correlates to the energy barrier of ammonia borane diffusion to the Pt sites. These activity differences reflect variations in the - facet dependent - degree of stabilization of intermediates by surface oxygen lone pairs and surface-metal binding strength. We constructed a high-performance biosensor for detecting uric acid by immobilizing an engineered urate oxidase on gold nanoparticles deposited on a carbon-glass electrode. This biosensor showed a low limit-of-detection (9.16 nM), a high sensitivity (14 μA/μM), a wide range of linearity (50 nM-1 mM), and more than 28 days lifetime.

Single-atom catalysts often show exceptionally high performance per metal loading. However, the isolated atom sites tend to agglomerate during preparation and/or high-temperature reaction. Here we show that in the case of Rh/Al 2 O 3 this deactivation can be prevented by dissolution/exsolution of metal atoms into/from the support. We design and synthesise a series of single-atom catalysts, characterise them and study the impact of exsolution in the dry reforming of methane at 700-900 °C. The catalysts' performance increases with increasing reaction time, as the rhodium atoms migrate from the subsurface to the surface. Although the oxidation state of rhodium changes from Rh(iii) to Rh(ii) or Rh(0) during catalysis, atom migration is the main factor affecting catalyst performance. Catalysts are conventionally designed with a focus on enthalpic effects, manipulating the Arrhenius activation energy. This approach ignores the possibility of designing materials to control the entropic factors that determine the pre-exponential factor. Here we investigate a new method of designing supported Pt catalysts with varying degrees of molecular confinement at the active site. Combining these with fast and precise online measurements, we analyse the kinetics of a model reaction, the platinum-catalysed hydrolysis of ammonia borane. We control the environment around the Pt particles by erecting organophosphonic acid barriers of different heights and at different distances. This is done by first coating the particles with organothiols, then coating the surface with organophosphonic acids, and finally removing the thiols. The result is a set of catalysts with well-defined "empty areas" surrounding the active sites. Generating Arrhenius plots with >300 points each, we then compare the effects of each confinement scenario. We show experimentally that confining the reaction influences mainly the entropy part of the enthalpy/entropy trade-off, leaving the enthalpy unchanged. Furthermore, we find this entropy contribution is only relevant at very small distances (<3 Å for ammonia borane), where the "empty space" is of a similar size to the reactant molecule. A new series of alkaline-earth-metal based coordination polymers were synthesized by using a pyrazine-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (2,5-H2pzdc) ligand under hydrothermal conditions. These compounds show a variety of structural topologies, reflecting the variable coordination geometries of the alkaline-earth ions as well as the key role of the metal precursor salts. Ca, Sr, and Ba give porous three-dimensional compounds, namely [Ca(2,5-pzdc)(H2O)2]·H2O (1), [Sr(2,5-pzdc)(H2O)4]·H2O (3), [Ba(2,5-pzdc)(H2O)4]·2H2O (4) and [Ba(2,5pzdc)(H2O)2] (5), that feature one-dimensional hydrophilic channels which are filled with water molecules. The Sr compound retains its structure when the lattice water molecules are removed, while the other compounds undergo a structural rearrangement. The hydrophilicity of the Sr compound combined with its high stability even in the absence of guest molecules are the key characteristics that determine its good water adsorption and proton conductivity properties.

Combined photoluminescence and impedance spectroscopy studies show that a europium-based metal-organic framework behaves as a highly effective and reliable humidity sensor, enabling dual-mode humidity detection.

Controlled mixtures of novel Mg-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were prepared, with H(+) or K(+) as counterions. A linear relation was found between synthesis pH and K/H ratio in the resultant mixture, establishing the tunability of the synthesis. Upon pyrolysis, these precursor mixtures yield nitrogen-doped, hierarchically porous carbons, which have good activity towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at pH 13. The nitrogen content varies significantly along the homologous carbon series (>400%, 1.3 at% to 5.7 at%), to a much greater extent than microstructural parameters such as surface area and graphitization. This allows us to isolate the positive correlation between nitrogen content and electrocatalytic oxygen reduction ORR activity in this class of metal-free, N-doped, porous carbons.

We present a new coordination polymer, {[VO(pzdc)(H2O)2] H2O}n, built from vanadyl and pyrazine-2,5-dicarboxylate (pzdc) ions. It consists of a one-dimensional chain of vanadyl ions linked by pzdc ions. The carboxylate groups show monodentate coordination, while the pyrazine ring is present both in non-coordinated and coordinated modes. This novel structure is stabilized by an intricate network of hydrogen bonds. The material is highly robust, and thermally stable up to 400 K. It is also antiferromagnetic, with a maximum magnetic susceptibility at ca. 50 K. The orbital shape and population analysis by means of DFT analysis confirm the π-acceptor role of the aromatic nitrogen function of the ligand, while the oxygen-based moieties (carboxylates from pzdc, the aqua ligands and oxo from V=O group) behave as normal donors. Charting the density flow related with significant transitions computed by time-dependent DFT, we determined the ligand-to-metal charge transfer processes. The topology of the chain complex implies two different types of connecting bridges. Using Broken Symmetry DFT modelling gives evidence for two different exchange coupling mechanisms between the vanadyl ions along each of these two molecular bridges. One is strongly antiferromagnetic, practically reducing the chain to 'vanadyl dimers'. The other is almost uncoupled, due to the large distance between the vanadyl ions.

We study the adsorption equilibrium isotherms and differential heats of adsorption of hexane isomers on the zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8. The studies are carried out at 373 K using a manometric set-up combined with a micro-calorimeter. We see that the Langmuir model describes well the isotherms for all four isomers (n-hexane, 2-methylpentane, 2,2-dimethylbutane and 2,3-dimethylbutane). The linear and mono-branched isomers adsorb well, but 2,2-dimethylbutane is totally excluded. Plotting the differential heat of adsorption against the loading shows an initial plateau for n-hexane and 2-methylpentane. This is followed by a slow rise, indicating adsorbate-adsorbate interactions. For the di-branched isomers the differential heat of adsorption decreases with loading. To gain further insight, we ran molecular simulations using the grand-canonical Monte Carlo approach. Comparing the simulation and the experimental results shows that the ZIF framework model requires blocking of the cages, since 2,2-dimethylbutane cannot fit through the sodalite-type windows. Practically speaking, this means that ZIF-8 is a highly promising candidate for enhancing gasoline octane numbers at 373 K, as it can separate 2,2-dimethylbutane and 2,3-dimethylbutane from 2-methylpentane. Our results prove the potential of ZIF-8 as a new adsorbent that can be employed in the upgrade of the Total Isomerization Process for the production of high octane number gasoline, by blending di-branched alkanes in the gasoline.

We report the synthesis and characterization of new V2O5/Al2O3-MgO catalysts and their application in oxidative dehydrogenation and epoxidation reactions. The materials were prepared by wet impregnation under excess acid conditions. Anchoring of the desired species on the support occurs via an exchange reaction between the vanadium complex and surface hydroxyl groups. The IR and UV-Vis spectra of these catalysts indicate the presence of monomeric vanadium species at 5 wt% V2O5 loading, along with small amounts of polymeric species at 5 and 10 wt% V2O5 loadings. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy reveals the presence of ferromagnetic VO(2+) dimers following calcination at 773 K. The catalysts were then tested in two reactions, namely the gas phase oxidative dehydrogenation of n-butane under flow conditions at 773 K and the liquid phase epoxidation of limonene with H2O2. The dehydrogenation reaction gave butenes and 1,3-butadiene in moderate selectivity at 8-10% conversion. The epoxidation of limonene was less successful, giving 50-70% selectivity to the 1,2-epoxide at 10-20% conversion.

We present a simple and efficient model for predicting the adsorption of molecules on metal surfaces. This heuristic model uses six descriptors for each metal (number of d-electrons, surface energy, first ionization potential and atomic radius, volume and mass) and three for each adsorptive (HOMO-LUMO energy gap, molecular volume and mass). Strikingly, despite its simplicity and low computational cost, this model predicts well the chemisorption of a range of adsorptives (H2, HO˙, N2, CO, NO, O2, H2O, CO2, NH3 and CH4) on a range of metals (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, W, Ir, Pt and Au) as calculated with DFT and taken from the literature. Using only a third of the data for fitting, the rest of the data were predicted with Q(2) = 0.91-0.95 and RMSEP = 0.94-1.16 eV. Furthermore, we measured experimental adsorption data for CO, CO2, CH4, H2, N2 and O2 on Ni, Pt and Rh supported on TiO2. Using the same descriptors, we then constructed a model for this experimental data set. Once again, the model explained the data well, with R(2) = 0.95 and Q(2) = 0.86, respectively.

The performance of PbCrO(4) during reduction/oxidation cycles has been studied over the temperature range 673-873 K. During thermal treatment in an inert atmosphere, PbCrO(4) is stable up to 773 K. At higher temperatures, it decomposes rapidly and irreversibly to Pb(2)(CrO(4))O. Moreover, the redox cycling of Pb(2)(CrO(4))O is also irreversible at 873 K when the reduction semi-reaction is prolonged beyond 3 min. Taking a standard 2 min cyclic treatment, we demonstrate that the surface reduction/oxidation of Pb(2)(CrO(4))O is exothermic between 773-873 K. In contrast, the redox cycling of PbCrO(4) is endothermic at 673 K. These findings demonstrate for the first time the potential of Pb(2)(CrO(4))O as a solid oxygen reservoir for the oxidative dehydrogenation of alkanes; especially at T ≥ 773 K, where H(2) oxidation by Pb(2)(CrO(4))O is exothermic. Preliminary kinetic studies suggest that Pb(2)(CrO(4))O reduction and oxidation both proceed through a "3D diffusion of the reacting front" mechanism. Our results open up opportunities for developing energy-efficient oxidative dehydrogenation routes to commercially important olefins.

Ceria-based materials are promising solid "oxygen reservoirs" for propane oxidative dehydrogenation. The ceria lattice oxygen can selectively combust hydrogen from the dehydrogenation mixture at 550 degrees C. This shifts the dehydrogenation equilibrium to the desired products side, generates heat aiding the endothermic dehydrogenation, and simplifies product separation. The process is also safer, since it avoids mixing O(2) and H(2) at high temperatures. While ceria itself is unselective, its catalytic properties can be tuned by doping. We study the effects of dopant type, concentration and the crystallite size on the catalytic properties. Doping with Cr or Cu increases both the selectivity and activity of the ceria, albeit that propane combustion also increases linearly with the Cu-concentration. The Cu-doped catalysts give selectivities up to 95% and combust up to 8% of the hydrogen feed. The best results are obtained with Cr-doped ceria, with selectivities up to 98%, and combustion of up to 15% of the hydrogen feed. The Cr-doped catalysts are stable in the reductive gas feed, and no extra coke is formed when the catalyst is subjected to an extra 10 min in the dehydrogenation mixture, after the hydrogen combustion reaction has stopped. This robustness is essential for industrial dehydrogenation applications.

Copper-doped ceria catalysts feature in a variety of catalytic reactions. One important application is selective hydrogen combustion via oxygen exchange, which forms the basis of cyclic oxidative dehydrogenation. This paper describes the synthesis of monophasic (doped) and biphasic (supported) Cu-ceria catalysts, that are then characterized using a combination of temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. The catalysts are analyzed both as fresh samples and after redox cycling at 550-800 degrees C. TPR and XRD characterization clarify the role of the active sites on the catalyst surface and the copper-ceria interactions. Depending on the catalyst type, reduction occurs at approximately 110 degrees C, approximately 150 degrees C, or approximately 190 degrees C. The reduction at 110 degrees C is ascribed to highly dispersed copper species doped in the ceria lattice, and that at 190 degrees C to CuO crystallites supported on ceria. Remarkably, both types converge to the 150 degrees C feature after redox cycling. The reduction temperature of the doped catalyst increases after redox cycling, indicating that stable Cu clusters form at the surface. Conversely, the reduction temperature of the "supported" catalyst decreases after redox cycling, and the CuO crystallites disappear. With this knowledge, a copper-doped ceria catalyst is analyzed after application in selective hydrogen combustion (16 consecutive redox cycles at 550 degrees C). No CuO crystallites are observed, and the sample reduces at approximately 110 degrees C. This suggests that copper-doped ceria is the active oxygen exchange phase in selective hydrogen combustion.

We present an optimised artificial neural network (ANN) model for predicting the melting point of a group of 97 imidazolium salts with varied anions. Each cation and anion in the model is described using molecular descriptors. Our model has a mean prediction error of 1.30%, a regression coefficient of 0.99 and a mean P-value of 0.92. The ANN's prediction performance depends mainly on the anion size. In particular, the prediction error decreases as the anion size increases. The high statistical relevance makes this model a useful tool for predicting the melting points of imidazolium-based ionic liquids.

We investigated the influence of the reduction state of gold ions on the growth of gold nanocrystals in N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF). While freshly prepared solutions of AuCl3 produce spherical nanocrystals, aged precursor solutions containing mainly Au+ ions and Au(0) atoms lead to various branched nanoparticles. Furthermore, we show that also the amount of the reducing and stabilisation agent tetra-n-octylammonium formate (TOAF) plays a decisive role on the shape of the nanocrystals, allowing us to grow triangular and cubic nanoparticles.

The formation of Pd nanoclusters in solution is studied. This system has two types of light-absorbing species: Pd ions which absorb light via electronic transitions and Pd clusters and aggregates which absorb light via valence-conduction transitions and also scatter light due to their nanometric dimensions. Here we monitor these dynamic changes using UV-visible spectroscopy. The reduction and clustering concentration profiles are extracted from the raw data using a combination of net analyte signal (NAS) and principal component analysis (PCA) methods. PdCl2, Pd(OAc)2 and Pd(NO3)2 are used as Pd2+ precursors and various tetra-n-octylammonium carboxylates are applied as reducing and stabilising agents. This in situ approach enables the quantification of both the reduction of the Pd2+ ions and the growth of the Pd clusters. Kinetic models that account for ion reduction, cluster growth and aggregation are presented and the influence of the counteranions and the reducing agents on these processes is discussed.

The advantages of bimetallic nanoparticles as C-C coupling catalysts are discussed, and a simple, bottom-up synthesis method of core-shell Ni-Pd clusters is presented. This method combines electrochemical and 'wet chemical' techniques, and enables the preparation of highly monodispersed structured bimetallic nanoclusters. The double-anode electrochemical cell is described in detail. The core-shell Ni-Pd clusters were then applied as catalysts in the Hiyama cross-coupling reaction between phenyltrimethoxysilane and various haloaryls. Good product yields were obtained with a variety of iodo- and bromoaryls. We found that, for a fixed amount of Pd atoms, the core-shell clusters outperform both the monometallic Pd clusters and the alloy bimetallic Ni-Pd ones. THF is an excellent solvent for this process, with less than 2% homocoupling by-product. The roles of the stabiliser and the solvent are discussed.

The advantages of combining heterogeneous catalysis and aryl chloride substrates for cross-coupling are introduced. A heterogeneous Pd/C catalyst is used for activating aryl bromides and electron withdrawing aryl chlorides via a one-pot 'domino' HALEX-Sonogashira reaction. No ligand or co-catalyst is required, and the cross-coupling products are obtained in moderate to good yields. The influence of the solvent, base, iodide source and catalyst is evaluated. The catalyst is reusable for at least six consecutive reaction cycles. A variation on this reaction using catalytic amounts of KI is also proposed.

We show that polyelectrolyte shells may be perfect hosts and microreactors for catalysis. Using a layer-by-layer self-assembly process to form hollow polyelectrolyte capsules, we show that individual layers can be replaced by palladium and gold nanoclusters forming robust cell-type microcapsules. Testing the catalytic activity of those embedded nanoclusters using the Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction, we show that simple self-assembled polyelectrolyte shells are ideal as carrier of at least one expensive catalyst, and possibly several, opening the road to new cascade reactions.

A new batch device that simulates the conditions in water and wastewater treatment plants and enables the study of low-concentration feeds is described. The application of this apparatus to the monitoring of the concentration of inorganic and/or biological contaminants is demonstrated, using kaolin particles and Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts, respectively. The rate of inorganic particle attachment to the static medium is found to be directly proportional to the initial influent concentration. On the other hand, Cryptosporidium parvum removal is found to be more effective in the presence of additional (kaolin) particles, and this is attributed to electrostatic interactions between oppositely charged layers on the absorbing medium. Accordingly, the addition of humic materials is found to inhibit the removal process, possibly by neutralizing the positive charge on the kaolin particles. The relevance of these results to existing water purification processes in general and to risk assessment of microbiological contamination in particular is discussed.
