Mössbauer spectroscopy is a powerful technique for probing the local electronic structure of iron compounds, because it reports in an element-selective manner on both the oxidation state and coordination environment of the Fe ion. Computational prediction of the two main Mössbauer parameters, isomer shift ( δ ) and quadrupole splitting (Δ E Q ), has long been targeted by quantum chemical studies, and useful protocols based on density functional theory have been proposed. Here we present an extensive curated reference set of Fe compounds that is considerably larger and more diverse than literature precedents. We make a distinction between low-temperature and high-temperature experimental subgroups. This set is employed for optimizing a refined computational protocol utilizing the scalar version of the exact 2-component (X2C) Hamiltonian with the finite nucleus approximation. Attention is devoted to having an accurate and flexible all-electron basis set for Fe. We assess the performance of several DFT methods that cover all representative families and rungs of functionals and find that hybrid functionals with ca. 25-30% exact exchange offer the best accuracy for isomer shifts. The work establishes a refined general protocol of wide applicability that achieves good performance for the prediction of isomer shifts in a wider variety of systems than before, but the limitations of DFT for quadrupole splittings are also highlighted. Finally, comparison of calculated values with high-temperature experimental results shows that the use of an empirical correction factor is required to account for the second-order Doppler shift and to achieve the same quality of correlation as with the low-temperature data.

The Light-Dependent Protochlorophyllide Oxidoreductase (LPOR) catalyzes a crucial step in chlorophyll biosynthesis: the rare biological photocatalytic reduction of the double C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond in the precursor, protochlorophyllide (Pchlide). Despite its fundamental significance, limited structural insights into the active complex have hindered understanding of its reaction mechanism. Recently, a high-resolution cryo-EM structure of LPOR in its active conformation challenged our view of pigment binding, residue interactions, and the catalytic process. Surprisingly, this structure contrasts markedly with previous assumptions, particularly regarding the orientation of the bound Pchlide. To gain insights into the substrate binding puzzle, we conducted molecular dynamics simulations, quantum-mechanics/molecular-mechanics (QM/MM) calculations, and site-directed mutagenesis. Two Pchlide binding modes were considered, one aligning with historical proposals (mode A) and another consistent with the recent experimental data (mode B). Binding energy calculations revealed that in contrast to the non-specific interactions found for mode A, mode B exhibits distinct stabilizing interactions that support more thermodynamically favorable binding. A comprehensive analysis incorporating QM/MM-based local energy decomposition unraveled a complex interaction network involving Y177, H319, and the C13 1 carboxy group, influencing the pigment's excited state energy and potentially contributing to substrate specificity. Importantly, our results uniformly favor mode B, challenging established interpretations and emphasizing the need for a comprehensive re-evaluation of the LPOR reaction mechanism in a way that incorporates accurate structural information on pigment interactions and substrate-cofactor positioning in the binding pocket. Photosystem II (PSII), the principal enzyme of oxygenic photosynthesis, contains two integral light harvesting proteins (CP43 and CP47) that bind chlorophylls and carotenoids. The two intrinsic antennae play crucial roles in excitation energy transfer and photoprotection. CP43 interacts most closely with the reaction center of PSII, specifically with the branch of the reaction center (D1) that is responsible for primary charge separation and electron transfer. Deciphering the function of CP43 requires detailed atomic-level insights into the properties of the embedded pigments. To advance this goal, we employ a range of multiscale computational approaches to determine the site energies and excitonic profile of CP43 chlorophylls, using large all-atom models of a membrane-bound PSII monomer. In addition to time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) used in the context of a quantum-mechanics/molecular-mechanics setup (QM/MM), we present a thorough analysis using the perturbed matrix method (PMM), which enables us to utilize information from long-timescale molecular dynamics simulations of native PSII-complexed CP43. The excited state energetics and excitonic couplings have both similarities and differences compared with previous experimental fits and theoretical calculations. Both static TD-DFT and dynamic PMM results indicate a layered distribution of site energies and reveal specific groups of chlorophylls that have shared contributions to low-energy excitations. Importantly, the contribution to the lowest energy exciton does not arise from the same chlorophylls at each system configuration, but rather changes as a function of conformational dynamics. An unexpected finding is the identification of a low-energy charge-transfer excited state within CP43 that involves a lumenal (C2) and the central (C10) chlorophyll of the complex. In oxygenic photosynthesis sunlight is harvested and funneled as excitation energy into the reaction center (RC) of Photosystem II (PSII), the site of primary charge separation that initiates the photosynthetic electron transfer chain. The chlorophyll Chl D1 pigment of the RC is the primary electron donor, forming a charge-separated radical pair with the vicinal pheophytin Pheo D1 (Chl D1 + Pheo D1 - ). To avert charge recombination, the electron is further transferred to plastoquinone Q A , whereas the hole relaxes to a central pair of chlorophylls (P D1 P D2 ), subsequently driving water oxidation. Spin-triplet states can form within the RC when forward electron transfer is inhibited or back reactions are favored. This can lead to formation of singlet dioxygen, with potential deleterious effects. Here we investigate the nature and properties of triplet states within the PSII RC using a multiscale quantum-mechanics/molecular-mechanics (QM/MM) approach. The low-energy spectrum of excited singlet and triplet states, of both local and charge-transfer nature, is compared using range-separated time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). We further compute electron paramagnetic resonance properties (zero-field splitting parameters and hyperfine coupling constants) of relaxed triplet states and compare them with available experimental data. Moreover, the electrostatic modulation of excited state energetics and redox properties of RC pigments by the semiquinone Q A - is described. Reactions of methyl-2-pyridyl ketone, pyCOMe, with FeCl 3 ·6H 2 O in various solvents gave complexes [Fe 4 Cl 6 (OMe) 2 (L1) 2 ]·0.7MeCN·0.4MeOH (1·0.7MeCN·0.4MeOH) and [Fe 3 Cl 4 (bicine)(L2)]·Me 2 CO·0.2H 2 O (2·Me 2 CO·0.2H 2 O). The ligands (L1) 2- = pyCO(Me)CHCOpy (in 1) and (L2) 2- = pyCO(Me)CH 2 CO(OMe)py (in 2) are formed in situ , through an aldol reaction-type mechanism between the carbanion pyC(O)CH 2 - (formed by the nucleophilic attack of the MeO - in pyCOMe) and pyCOMe which results in the formation of a new C-C bond. The intermediate compound undergoes attack in the -CH 2 - or -CO- group by a MeO - group, and the new ligands (L1) 2- and (L2) 2- , respectively, are formed. The molecular structure of 1 consists of three corner-sharing [Fe 2 O 2 ] rhombic units in cis -arrangement. The two terminal Fe III ions display distorted square pyramidal geometry and the two central Fe III ions are distorted octahedral. The molecular structure of 2 consists of two corner-sharing [Fe 2 O 2 ] rhombic units, with the two terminal Fe III ions in distorted square pyramidal geometry and the central Fe III in distorted octahedral. The differentiation in the coordination environment of the Fe III ions in 1-2 is reflected in the values of the Mössbauer hyperfine parameters. In agreement with theoretical calculations, the square pyramidal sites exhibit a smaller isomer shift value in comparison to the octahedral sites. Magnetic studies indicate antiferromagnetic interactions leading to an S = 0 ground state in 1 and to an S = 5/2 ground state in 2, consistent with Electron Paramagnetic Resonance spectroscopy. Mössbauer spectra of 2 indicate the onset of relaxation effects below 80 K. At 1.5 K the spectrum of 2 consists of magnetic sextets. The determined hyperfine magnetic fields are consistent with the exchange coupling scheme imposed by the crystal structure of 2. Theoretical calculations shed light on the differences in the electronic structure between the square pyramidal and the octahedral sites.

Photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes harvest solar energy with a high quantum efficiency. Protein scaffolds are known to tune the spectral properties of embedded pigments principally through structured electrostatic environments. Although the physical nature of electrostatic tuning is straightforward, the precise spatial principles of electrostatic preorganization remain poorly explored for different protein matrices and incompletely characterized with respect to the intrinsic properties of different photosynthetic pigments. In this work, we study the electronic structure features associated with the lowest excited state of a series of eight naturally occurring (bacterio)chlorophylls and pheophytins to describe the precise topological differences in electrostatic potentials and hence determine intrinsic differences in the expected mode and impact of electrostatic tuning. The difference electrostatic potentials between the ground and first excited states are used as fingerprints. Both the spatial profile and the propensity for spectral tuning are found to be unique for each pigment, indicating spatially and directionally distinct modes of electrostatic tuning. The results define a specific partitioning of the protein matrix around each pigment as an aid to identify regions with a maximal impact on spectral tuning and have direct implications for dimensionality reduction in protein design and engineering. Thus, a quantum mechanical basis is provided for understanding, predicting, and ultimately designing sequence-modified or pigment-exchanged biological systems, as suggested for selected examples of pigment-reconstituted proteins.

Quantum chemical approaches today are a powerful tool to study the properties and reactivity of metalloenzymes. In the field of solar fuels research these involve predominantly photosystem II and hydrogenases, which catalyze water oxidation and hydrogen evolution, as well as related biomimetic and bio-inspired models. Theoretical methods are extensively used to better comprehend the nature of catalytic intermediates, establish important structure-function and structure-property correlations, elucidate functional principles, and uncover the catalytic activity of these complex systems by unravelling the key steps of their reaction mechanism. Computations in the field of water oxidation and hydrogen evolution are used as predictive tools to elucidate structures, explain and synthesize complex experimental observations from advanced spectroscopic techniques, rationalize reactivity on the basis of atomistic models and electronic structure, and guide the design of new synthetic targets. This feature article covers recent advances in the application of quantum chemical methods for understanding the nature of catalytic intermediates and the mechanism by which photosystem II and hydrogenases achieve their function, and points at essential questions that remain only partly answered and at challenges that will have to be met by future advances and applications of quantum and computational chemistry.

Natural photosynthesis relies on light harvesting and excitation energy transfer by specialized pigment-protein complexes. Their structure and the electronic properties of the embedded chromophores define the mechanisms of energy transfer. An important example of a pigment-protein complex is CP47, one of the integral antennae of the oxygen-evolving photosystem II (PSII) that is responsible for efficient excitation energy transfer to the PSII reaction center. The charge-transfer excitation induced among coupled reaction center chromophores resolves into charge separation that initiates the electron transfer cascade driving oxygenic photosynthesis. Mapping the distribution of site energies among the 16 chlorophyll molecules of CP47 is essential for understanding excitation energy transfer and overall antenna function. In this work, we demonstrate a multiscale quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approach utilizing full time-dependent density functional theory with modern range-separated functionals to compute for the first time the excitation energies of all CP47 chlorophylls in a complete membrane-embedded cyanobacterial PSII dimer. The results quantify the electrostatic effect of the protein on the site energies of CP47 chlorophylls, providing a high-level quantum chemical excitation profile of CP47 within a complete computational model of "near-native" cyanobacterial PSII. The ranking of site energies and the identity of the most red-shifted chlorophylls (B3, followed by B1) differ from previous hypotheses in the literature and provide an alternative basis for evaluating past approaches and semiempirically fitted sets. Given that a lot of experimental studies on CP47 and other light-harvesting complexes utilize extracted samples, we employ molecular dynamics simulations of isolated CP47 to identify which parts of the polypeptide are most destabilized and which pigments are most perturbed when the antenna complex is extracted from PSII. We demonstrate that large parts of the isolated complex rapidly refold to non-native conformations and that certain pigments (such as chlorophyll B1 and β-carotene h1) are so destabilized that they are probably lost upon extraction of CP47 from PSII. The results suggest that the properties of isolated CP47 are not representative of the native complexed antenna. Co(iii) complexes are increasingly prevalent in homogeneous catalysis. Catalytic cycles involve multiple intermediates, many of which will feature unsaturated metal centres. This raises the possibility of multi-state character along reaction pathways and so requires an accurate approach to calculating spin-state energetics. Here we report an assessment of the performance of DLPNO-CCSD(T) (domain-based local pair natural orbital approximation to coupled cluster theory) against experimental 1Co to 3Co spin splitting energies for a series of pseudo-octahedral Co(iii) complexes. The alternative NEVPT2 (strongly-contracted n-electron valence perturbation theory) and a range of density functionals are also assessed. DLPNO-CCSD(T) is identified as a highly promising method, with mean absolute deviations (MADs) as small as 1.3 kcal mol-1 when Kohn-Sham reference orbitals are used. DLPNO-CCSD(T) out-performs NEVPT2 for which a MAD of 3.5 kcal mol-1 can be achieved when a (10,12) active space is employed. Of the nine DFT methods investigated TPSS is the leading functional, with a MAD of 1.9 kcal mol-1. Our results show how DLPNO-CCSD(T) can provide accurate spin state energetics for Co(iii) species in particular and first row transition metal systems in general. DLPNO-CCSD(T) is therefore a promising method for applications in the burgeoning field of homogeneous catalysis based on Co(iii) species.

The pentanuclear Mn complex [Mn 5 (μ 3 -O)(bpp) 6 ] n+ can access six consecutive total oxidation levels from Mn(ii) 5 to Mn(iii) 5 . The electronic structure and redox behavior of this cluster are studied computationally and the results are compared with experimental data. The tunability of the redox potential span and of the absolute potential position is explored through systematic modifications of the 3,5-bis(pyridin-2-yl)-pyrazole (Hbpp) ligand. By substitutions with electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups, the position of the redox events can be shifted by ca. 1 eV, however no ligand modification is predicted to alter the total redox span. By changing the pyridyl groups to benzimidazole groups, yielding the 3,5-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyrazole (H 3 bbp) ligand, it is predicted that higher oxidation states can be stabilized, from Mn(iii) 4 Mn(iv) up to Mn(iv) 5 . In this system, the redox span for the same number of redox equivalents accumulated is slightly smaller than that in the original system. The manganese system is compared with its pentanuclear iron analogue that was recently reported to be catalytically active in oxygen evolution (Okamura et al., Nature, 2016, 530, 465). The electronic and structural requirements for utilization of the stored oxidizing equivalents in water oxidation are discussed.

Methanol has long being used as a substrate analogue to probe access pathways and investigate water delivery at the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of photosystem-II. In this contribution we study the interaction of methanol with the OEC by assembling available spectroscopic data into a quantum mechanical treatment that takes into account the local channel architecture of the active site. The effect on the magnetic energy levels of the Mn 4 Ca cluster in the S 2 state of the catalytic cycle can be explained equally well by two models that involve either methanol binding to the calcium ion of the cluster, or a second-sphere interaction in the vicinity of the "dangler" Mn4 ion. However, consideration of the latest 13 C hyperfine interaction data shows that only one model is fully consistent with experiment. In contrast to previous hypotheses, methanol is not a direct ligand to the OEC, but is situated at the end-point of a water channel associated with the O4 bridge. Its effect on magnetic properties of plant PS-II results from disruption of hydrogen bonding between O4 and proximal channel water molecules, thus enhancing superexchange (antiferromagnetic coupling) between the Mn3 and Mn4 ions. The same interaction mode applies to the dark-stable S 1 state and possibly to all other states of the complex. Comparison of protein sequences from cyanobacteria and plants reveals a channel-altering substitution (D1-Asn87 versus D1-Ala87) in the proximity of the methanol binding pocket, explaining the species-dependence of the methanol effect. The water channel established as the methanol access pathway is the same that delivers ammonia to the Mn4 ion, supporting the notion that this is the only directly solvent-accessible manganese site of the OEC. The results support the pivot mechanism for water binding at a component of the S 3 state and would be consistent with partial inhibition of water delivery by methanol. Mechanistic implications for enzymatic regulation and catalytic progression are discussed.

The redox potential of synthetic oligonuclear transition metal complexes has been shown to correlate with the Lewis acidity of a redox-inactive cation connected to the redox-active transition metals of the cluster via oxo or hydroxo bridges. Such heterometallic clusters are important cofactors in many metalloenzymes, where it is speculated that the redox-inactive constituent ion of the cluster serves to optimize its redox potential for electron transfer or catalysis. A principal example is the oxygen-evolving complex in photosystem II of natural photosynthesis, a Mn4CaO5 cofactor that oxidizes water into dioxygen, protons and electrons. Calcium is critical for catalytic function, but its precise role is not yet established. In analogy to synthetic complexes it has been suggested that Ca(2+) fine-tunes the redox potential of the manganese cluster. Here we evaluate this hypothesis by computing the relative redox potentials of substituted derivatives of the oxygen-evolving complex with the cations Sr(2+), Gd(3+), Cd(2+), Zn(2+), Mg(2+), Sc(3+), Na(+) and Y(3+) for two sequential transitions of its catalytic cycle. The theoretical approach is validated with a series of experimentally well-characterized Mn3AO4 cubane complexes that are structural mimics of the enzymatic cluster. Our results reproduce perfectly the experimentally observed correlation between the redox potential and the Lewis acidities of redox-inactive cations for the synthetic complexes. However, it is conclusively demonstrated that this correlation does not hold for the oxygen evolving complex. In the enzyme the redox potential of the cluster only responds to the charge of the redox-inactive cations and remains otherwise insensitive to their precise identity, precluding redox-tuning of the metal cluster as a primary role for Ca(2+) in biological water oxidation.

Among the four photo-driven transitions of the water-oxidizing tetramanganese-calcium cofactor of biological photosynthesis, the second-last step of the catalytic cycle, that is the S 2 to S 3 state transition, is the crucial step that poises the catalyst for the final O-O bond formation. This transition, whose intermediates are not yet fully understood, is a multi-step process that involves the redox-active tyrosine residue and includes oxidation and deprotonation of the catalytic cluster, as well as the binding of a water molecule. Spectroscopic data has the potential to shed light on the sequence of events that comprise this catalytic step, which still lacks a structural interpretation. In this work the S 2 -S 3 state transition is studied and a key intermediate species is characterized: it contains a Mn 3 O 4 Ca cubane subunit linked to a five-coordinate Mn(iv) ion that adopts an approximately trigonal bipyramidal ligand field. It is shown using high-level density functional and multireference wave function calculations that this species accounts for the near-infrared absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance observations on metastable S 2 -S 3 intermediates. The results confirm that deprotonation and Mn oxidation of the cofactor must precede the coordination of a water molecule, and lead to identification of a novel low-energy water binding mode that has important implications for the identity of the substrates in the mechanism of biological water oxidation.

Carboxylate-bridged Mn(II)-Ca(II) complexes are potentially relevant for mimicking the first stages of the Oxygen-Evolving Complex (OEC) assembly process. Here, we report on new homonuclear Ca(II) and heteronuclear Mn(II)–Ca(II) complexes with carboxylate-functionalized tripodal tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine ligands, the heptadentate H3tpaa, previously reported, and the new hexadentate H2tpada, containing respectively three and two carboxylate units. The mononuclear [Ca(Htpaa)(OH2)] (Ca1) and dinuclear [Ca(tpada)(OH2)2]2 (Ca2) calcium complexes, as well as the tetranuclear [{Mn(tpaa)}2{Ca(OH2)5(μ-OH2)}2][Mn(tpaa)]2 (Mn2Ca2·2Mn) and dinuclear [Mn(tpada)ClCa(OH2)2.67(MeOH)2.33]Cl (MnCa) heterometallic species have been structurally characterized; the syntheses of Ca1 and Mn2Ca2·2Mn being previously reported by us (Inorg. Chem., 2015, 54, 1283). The Mn(II) and Ca(II) are linked by two μ1,1-bridging carboxylates in MnCa, while only one μ1,3-carboxylate bridge connects each Ca2+ ion to each Mn(II) in Mn2Ca2. A variable number of water molecules (n = 1 to 7) are coordinated to Ca in all complexes, most of them being involved in hydrogen-bond networks, in analogy to what occurs in the photosystem II. All donor atoms of the tpaa3- and tpada2- ligands are coordinated to the Mn2+ ions, despite the unusually long distance between the Mn2+ ion and the tertiary amine imposed by the constraining nature of the ligands, as supported by theoretical calculations. Solid state EPR spectroscopy, in combination with DFT calculations, has also shown that the Ca2+ ion has an effect on the electronic parameters (zero field splitting) of the linked Mn(II) in the case of MnCa (μ1,1-carboxylate bridges). In Mn2Ca2 (μ1,3-carboxylate bridge) the Ca2+ ion induces only slight structural changes in the Mn coordination sphere.

A central question in biological water splitting concerns the oxidation states of the manganese ions that comprise the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II. Understanding the nature and order of oxidation events that occur during the catalytic cycle of five S i states ( i = 0-4) is of fundamental importance both for the natural system and for artificial water oxidation catalysts. Despite the widespread adoption of the so-called "high-valent scheme"-where, for example, the Mn oxidation states in the S 2 state are assigned as III, IV, IV, IV-the competing "low-valent scheme" that differs by a total of two metal unpaired electrons ( i.e. III, III, III, IV in the S 2 state) is favored by several recent studies for the biological catalyst. The question of the correct oxidation state assignment is addressed here by a detailed computational comparison of the two schemes using a common structural platform and theoretical approach. Models based on crystallographic constraints were constructed for all conceivable oxidation state assignments in the four (semi)stable S states of the oxygen evolving complex, sampling various protonation levels and patterns to ensure comprehensive coverage. The models are evaluated with respect to their geometric, energetic, electronic, and spectroscopic properties against available experimental EXAFS, XFEL-XRD, EPR, ENDOR and Mn K pre-edge XANES data. New 2.5 K 55 Mn ENDOR data of the S 2 state are also reported. Our results conclusively show that the entire S state phenomenology can only be accommodated within the high-valent scheme by adopting a single motif and protonation pattern that progresses smoothly from S 0 (III, III, III, IV) to S 3 (IV, IV, IV, IV), satisfying all experimental constraints and reproducing all observables. By contrast, it was impossible to construct a consistent cycle based on the low-valent scheme for all S states. Instead, the low-valent models developed here may provide new insight into the over-reduced S states and the states involved in the assembly of the catalytically active water oxidizing cluster.

The EPR "split signals" represent key intermediates of the S-state cycle where the redox active D1-Tyr161 (YZ) has been oxidized by the reaction center of the photosystem II enzyme to its tyrosyl radical form, but the successive oxidation of the Mn4CaO5 cluster has not yet occurred (SiYZ˙). Here we focus on the S2YZ˙ state, which is formed en route to the final metastable state of the catalyst, the S3 state, the state which immediately precedes O-O bond formation. Quantum chemical calculations demonstrate that both isomeric forms of the S2 state, the open and closed cubane isomers, can form states with an oxidized YZ˙ residue without prior deprotonation of the Mn4CaO5 cluster. The two forms are expected to lie close in energy and retain the electronic structure and magnetic topology of the corresponding S2 state of the inorganic core. As expected, tyrosine oxidation results in a proton shift towards His190. Analysis of the electronic rearrangements that occur upon formation of the tyrosyl radical suggests that a likely next step in the catalytic cycle is the deprotonation of a terminal water ligand (W1) of the Mn4CaO5 cluster. Diamagnetic metal ion substitution is used in our calculations to obtain the molecular g-tensor of YZ˙. It is known that the gx value is a sensitive probe not only of the extent of the proton shift between the tyrosine-histidine pair, but also of the polarization environment of the tyrosine, especially about the phenolic oxygen. It is shown for PSII that this environment is determined by the Ca(2+) ion, which locates two water molecules about the phenoxyl oxygen, indirectly modulating the oxidation potential of YZ.

The S2 state of the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II, which consists of a Mn4O5Ca cofactor, is EPR-active, typically displaying a multiline signal, which arises from a ground spin state of total spin ST = 1/2. The precise appearance of the signal varies amongst different photosynthetic species, preparation and solvent conditions/compositions. Over the past five years, using the model species Thermosynechococcus elongatus, we have examined modifications that induce changes in the multiline signal, i.e. Ca(2+)/Sr(2+)-substitution and the binding of ammonia, to ascertain how structural perturbations of the cluster are reflected in its magnetic/electronic properties. This refined analysis, which now includes high-field (W-band) data, demonstrates that the electronic structure of the S2 state is essentially invariant to these modifications. This assessment is based on spectroscopies that examine the metal centres themselves (EPR, (55)Mn-ENDOR) and their first coordination sphere ligands ((14)N/(15)N- and (17)O-ESEEM, -HYSCORE and -EDNMR). In addition, extended quantum mechanical models from broken-symmetry DFT now reproduce all EPR, (55)Mn and (14)N experimental magnetic observables, with the inclusion of second coordination sphere ligands being crucial for accurately describing the interaction of NH3 with the Mn tetramer. These results support a mechanism of multiline heterogeneity reported for species differences and the effect of methanol [Biochim. Biophys. Acta, Bioenerg., 2011, 1807, 829], involving small changes in the magnetic connectivity of the solvent accessible outer MnA4 to the cuboidal unit Mn3O3Ca, resulting in predictable changes of the measured effective (55)Mn hyperfine tensors. Sr(2+) and NH3 replacement both affect the observed (17)O-EDNMR signal envelope supporting the assignment of O5 as the exchangeable μ-oxo bridge and it acting as the first site of substrate inclusion.

Activation of a water molecule by the electrochemical oxidation of a Mn-aquo complex accompanied by the loss of protons is reported. The sequential (2 × 1 electron/1 proton) and direct (2 electron/2 proton) proton-coupled electrochemical oxidation of a non-porphyrinic six-coordinated Mn(II)OH 2 complex into a mononuclear Mn(O) complex is described. The intermediate Mn(III)OH 2 and Mn(III)OH complexes are electrochemically prepared and analysed. Complete deprotonation of the coordinated water molecule in the Mn(O) complex is confirmed by electrochemical data while the analysis of EXAFS data reveals a gradual shortening of an Mn-O bond upon oxidation from Mn(II)OH 2 to Mn(III)OH and Mn(O). Reactivity experiments, DFT calculations and XANES pre-edge features provide strong evidence that the bonding in Mn(O) is best characterized by a Mn(III)-oxyl description. Such oxyl species could play a crucial role in natural and artificial water splitting reactions. We provide here a synthetic example for such species, obtained by electrochemical activation of a water ligand.

A systematic study of the magnetic coupling in homovalent (III-III and IV-IV) and heterovalent (III-IV) manganese dimers as a function of the chemical identity and coordination mode of the bridging ligands is carried out with the aim of establishing a reference library of magnetostructural correlations. Emphasis is placed on rationalising the results through analysis of the superexchange pathways in terms of corresponding orbitals. Additionally, the influence of specific structural distortions on magnetic properties is explored. Consistent with chemical intuition and decades of experience, oxo bridges are shown to be efficient mediators of superexchange, primarily through pi-type pathways, whereas the introduction of bridging carboxylates inhibits the magnetic coupling of the metal centres by introducing structural distortions in the core and by reducing the antiferromagnetic contribution to the exchange. Protonation of oxo bridges is shown to induce a predictably systematic reduction in the magnitude of antiferromagnetic coupling by switching off the dominant antiferromagnetic exchange pathways. In the case of weakly coupled dimers, this can even induce a reversal of the coupling from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic.

Twelve structural models for the S(2) state of the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of photosystem II are evaluated in terms of their magnetic properties. The set includes ten models based on the 'fused twist' core topology derived by polarized EXAFS spectra and two related models proposed in recent mechanistic investigations. Optimized geometries and spin population analyses suggest that Mn(iii), which is most often identified with the manganese ion at site D, is always associated with a penta-coordinate environment, unless a chloride is directly ligated to the metal. Exchange coupling constants were determined by broken-symmetry density functional theory calculations and the complete spectrum of magnetic sublevels was obtained by direct diagonalization of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Seven models display a doublet ground state and are considered spectroscopic models for the ground state corresponding to the multiline signal (MLS) of the S(2) state of the OEC, whereas the remaining five models display a sextet ground state and could be related to the g = 4.1 signal of the S(2) state. It is found that the sign of the exchange coupling constant between the Mn centres at positions A and B of the cluster is directly related to the ground state multiplicity, implying that interconversion between the doublet and sextet can be induced by only small structural perturbations. The recently proposed quantum chemical method for the calculation of (55)Mn hyperfine coupling constants is subsequently applied to the S(2) MLS state models and the quantities that enter into the individual steps of the procedure (site-spin expectation values, intrinsic site isotropic hyperfine parameters and projected (55)Mn isotropic hyperfine constants) are analyzed and discussed in detail with respect to the structural and electronic features of each model. The current approach performs promisingly. It reacts sensitively to structural distortions and hence may be able to distinguish between different structural proposals. Thus it emerges as a useful contributor to the ongoing efforts that aim at establishing correlations between the body of spectroscopic data available for the various S(i) states of the OEC and their actual geometric features.

A high yield of the tetraphosphaladderene, anti-tetraphosphatricyclo[4.2.0.0(2,5)]octa-3,7-diene, is obtained from reaction of the zirconocene 1,3-diphosphabicyclo[1.1.0]butane with Ph(2)SbCl(3) in THF or CH(2)Cl(2). Exploration of the reaction pathway using density functional theory suggests that an envelope-type adduct of Ph(2)SbCl and 1,3-diphosphabicyclo[1.1.0]butane plays a pivotal role in the reaction. The zwitterionic character of this intermediate species allows it to act simultaneously as both an ene and an eneophile, and a symmetry-allowed bimolecular reaction leads to the tetraphosphaladderene species via a spirocyclic intermediate.

The electronic structure of the 1,2,3-triphosphaindenyl ligand suggests that it should exhibit enhanced pi-acceptor properties when compared to the eta(5)-indenyl system; this insight encouraged us to develop a simple synthetic pathway from 1,2-diphosphinobenzene to the 1,2,3-C(6)H(4)P(3) and 2-As-1,3-C(6)H(4)P(2) anions, both of which have been structurally characterised by X-ray crystallography; as a bonus from these studies we also obtained the first structurally characterised organo derivative of the P(8) unit present in Hittorf's phosphorus.

Density functional theory is used to explore the electronic states involved in the remarkable two-step spin crossover (S = 0 --> S = 1 --> S = 2) in the cationic extended metal atom chain [Co(3)(dpa)(4)Cl(2)](+) (dpa = the anion of 2-dipyridylamine) (R. Clérac, F. A. Cotton, K. R. Dunbar, T. Lu, C. A. Murillo and X. Wang, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2000, 122, 2272). The calculations are consistent with a model in which all three spin states share one common feature-a vacancy in the d(xy) orbital on the central cobalt atom which is stabilised by pi donation from four amide groups. As a result, all three can be considered to contain a Co(2+)-Co(3+)-Co(2+) chain. The singlet and triplet states arise from antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic coupling, respectively, between the unpaired electron in this d(xy) orbital and another localised entirely on the terminal cobalt centres (the antisymmetric combination of Co d(z(2))). The singlet-triplet transition does not, therefore, populate any additional antibonding orbitals, and as a result the structure is almost invariant around the characteristic temperature of the singlet-triplet transition. In the most stable quintet, in contrast, the symmetry of the Co-Co-Co chain is broken, giving rise to a localised high-spin Co(II) centre (S = 3/2), ferromagnetically coupled to a Co(III)-Co(II) dimer (S = 1/2). The structural changes associated with this transition are apparent in the X-ray data in subtle changes in both Co-N and Co-Cl bond lengths, although their magnitude is damped by the relatively low population (18%) of the quintet even at 300 K.

The cationic cages nido-[C2Bu(t)2P2E]+ (E = As, Sb), which are isolobal to the cyclopentadienyl cation, adopt square based pyramidal structures with the heavy pnictogen atom at the apex; NMR and computational methods have been used to probe the dynamic behaviour of the complexes.

The relative stabilities of different isomers of the isoelectronic series C(n)H(n)P(5-n)(+) have been investigated using G3X theory. The results indicate that all species containing one or more phosphorus atom adopt a three-dimensional nido geometry, in marked contrast to the planar structure favoured by the all-carbon analogue. Within isomeric nido clusters, a strong correlation between total energy and the nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) indicates that three-dimensional aromaticity plays a significant role in determining the stability of the cluster. In the context of these nido clusters, the extent to which phosphorus is a carbon copy proves to be highly dependent on the global electronic environment. The first isolobal substitution of CH by P causes a complete switch from localised to delocalised bonding, accompanied by a transition from a two- to a three-dimensional structure, with the phosphorus atom showing a strong preference for the unique apical site. In contrast, further increasing the phosphorus content causes no further change in structure or bonding, suggesting that, at the basal sites, phosphorus is a rather better carbon copy. The low-energy pathways for interconversion of apical and basal atoms previously identified in C(2)H(2)P(3)(+) prove to be a general feature of all members of the series.
