The synthesis of a new porous organic cage decorated with isopropyl moieties (CC21) was achieved from the reaction of triformylbenzene and an isopropyl functionalised diamine. Unlike structurally analogous porous organic cages, its synthesis proved challenging due to competitive aminal formation, rationalised using control experiments and computational modelling. The use of an additional amine was found to increase conversion to the desired cage.

A porous molecular crystal (TSCl) was found to crystallise from dichloromethane and water during the synthesis of tetrakis(4-sulfophenylmethane). Crystal structure prediction (CSP) rationalises the driving force behind the formation of this porous TSCl phase and the intermolecular interactions that direct its formation. Gas sorption analysis showed that TSCl is permanently porous with selective adsorption of CO 2 over N 2 , H 2 and CH 4 and a maximum CO 2 uptake of 74 cm 3 g -1 at 195 K. Calculations revealed that TSCl assembles via a combination of weak hydrogen bonds and strong dispersion interactions. This illustrates that CSP can underpin approaches to crystal engineering that do not involve more intuitive directional interactions, such as hydrogen bonding.

Macrocycles are usually non-porous or barely porous in the solid-state because of their small intrinsic cavity sizes and tendency to close-pack. Here, we use a heterochiral pairing strategy to introduce porosity in a trianglimine macrocycle, by co-crystallising two macrocycles with opposing chiralities. The stable racemic trianglimine crystal contains an interconnected pore network that has a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 355 m2 g-1.

Organic molecules tend to close pack to form dense structures when they are crystallised from organic solvents. Porous molecular crystals defy this rule: they contain open space, which is typically stabilised by inclusion of solvent in the interconnected pores during crystallisation. The design and discovery of such structures is often challenging and time consuming, in part because it is difficult to predict solvent effects on crystal form stability. Here, we combine crystal structure prediction (CSP) with a robotic crystallisation screen to accelerate the discovery of stable hydrogen-bonded frameworks. We exemplify this strategy by finding new phases of two well-studied molecules in a computationally targeted way. Specifically, we find a new 'hidden' porous polymorph of trimesic acid, δ- TMA , that has a guest-free hexagonal pore structure, as well as three new solvent-stabilized diamondoid frameworks of adamantane-1,3,5,7-tetracarboxylic acid ( ADTA ). Beyond porous solids, this hybrid computational-experimental approach could be applied to a wide range of materials problems, such as organic electronics and drug formulation., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2019.)

The design, synthesis and structural characterization of non-natural oligomers that adopt well-defined conformations, so called foldamers, is a key objective in developing biomimetic 3D functional architectures. For the aromatic oligoamide foldamer family, use of interactions between side-chains to control conformation is underexplored. The current manuscript addresses this objective through the design, synthesis and conformational analyses of model dimers derived from 3-O-alkylated para-aminobenzoic acid monomers. The O-alkyl groups on these foldamers are capable of adopting syn- or anti-conformers through rotation around the Ar-CO/NH axes. In the syn-conformation this allows the foldamer to act as a topographical mimic of the α-helix whereby the O-alkyl groups mimic the spatial orientation of the i and i + 4 side-chains from the α-helix. Using molecular modelling and 2D NMR analyses, this work illustrates that covalent links and hydrogen-bonding interactions between side-chains can bias the conformation in favour of the α-helix mimicking syn-conformer, offering insight that may be more widely applied to control secondary structure in foldamers.

The dynamic covalent synthesis of two imine-based porous organic cages was successfully transferred from batch to continuous flow. The same flow reactor was then used to scramble the constituents of these two cages in differing ratios to form cage mixtures. Preparative HPLC purification of one of these mixtures allowed rapid access to a desymmetrised cage molecule.

Gels can be formed by dissolving Fmoc-diphenylalanine (Fmoc-PhePhe or FmocFF) in an organic solvent and adding water. We show here that the choice and amount of organic solvent allows the rheological properties of the gel to be tuned. The differences in properties arise from the microstructure of the fibre network formed. The organic solvent can then be removed post-gelation, without significant changes in the rheological properties. Gels formed using acetone are meta-stable and crystals of FmocFF suitable for X-ray diffraction can be collected from this gel.

Current and historic petroleum-related activities in Milford Haven Waterway (MHW; Wales, UK) contribute to hydrocarbon contamination of surficial sediments. Three main hydrocarbon components of sediments were analyzed: (1) aliphatic hydrocarbons of predominantly biogenic origin, representing about 5-15% of total hydrocarbons (THC); (2) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from recent petrogenic and mainly older pyrogenic sources, representing about 2-6% of THC; (3) unresolved complex mixture from spill-related and heavily-weathered petrogenic sources, representing as much as 70-85% of THC. Environmental forensics evaluation of the data demonstrate that although 72,000 tonnes (t) crude oil spilled from the Sea Empress in 1996, the Forties blend cargo was not identified in 2010. However, using biomarkers, heavy fuel oil (HFO) from Sea Empress' bunkers (480 t spilled) was detected further upstream and more widely than previously. Iranian crude (100 t) spilled by the El Omar in 1988 and fuel (130,000 t) lost during bombing in 1940 also were tentatively identified. The PAH source ratios demonstrate that the historic pyrogenic PAHs come mainly from biomass and coal combustion. The distribution pattern of PAHs appeared more pyrogenic in 2012 than in 1996, as if recovering from the more petrogenic signature, in places, of the Sea Empress. The heavier PAH distributions were pyrogenic at most stations, and similar to those in sediments from oil terminal berths up to 2006, when dredging operations peaked. Partly as a result of this, in 2007 the concentrations of PAHs peaked throughout the waterway. Apart from effluent, atmospheric and runoff inputs, most of the identified inputs to the surficial sediments are historic. Therefore, likely processes include disturbance by construction (e.g. pile-driving) and dredging of contaminants sequestered in sediments, followed by their wide redistribution via suspended sediment transport.

Two porous organic cages with different thermodynamic polymorphs were induced by co-solvents to interchange their crystal packing modes, thus achieving guest-mediated control over solid-state porosity. In situ crystallography allows the effect of the co-solvent guests on these structural interconversions to be understood.

[FeL3][BF4]2·xH2O (L = 3-(pyrazinyl)-1H-pyrazole) shows negative thermal expansion between 150-240 K but positive thermal expansion at 240-300 K, linked to rearrangement of anions and water molecules within pores in the lattice.

Syntheses of 2,6-di(5-aminopyrazol-3-yl)pyridine (L(1)), 2,6-di(5-tertbutylcarboxamidopyrazol-3-yl)pyridine (L(2)), 2,6-di(5-tertbutylpyrazol-3-yl)pyridine (L(3)), 2-(5-tertbutylpyrazol-3-yl)-6-(5-methylpyrazol-3-yl)pyridine (L(4)) and 2-(5-tertbutylpyrazol-3-yl)-6-(5-aminopyrazol-3-yl)pyridine (L(5)) are reported. Iron complex salts of the first four ligands were crystallographically characterised. The structures exhibit intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the cations and the anions and/or solvent, leading to a fluorite (flu) net, a 1D ladder structure, and a homochiral self-penetrating helical network related to the (10,3)-a (srs) topology. All the complexes are high-spin in the crystal, and bulk samples are also fully or predominantly high-spin at room temperature and below although two of the dried materials exhibit partial spin-state transitions on cooling.

Two salts of [FeL2](2+) (L = 2,6-bis[5-methyl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl]pyridine) are isostructural under ambient conditions but show different thermal spin-crossover behaviour, involving a variety of crystallographic phase changes.

A new bis(disulfide)-linked offset dimer is formed from a dithiolated analogue of cyclotriguaiacylene. Unlike a similar tris(disulfide)-linked example, this is not a true cryptophane as the offset nature of the dimerisation and intramolecular host-guest interactions preclude its use as a host.

Fused ring heterocycles were synthesised via the rhodium catalysed isomerisation/regio and stereoselective 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition cascades in good yields.

An electrochemical approach for the preparation of copper(I) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes has been developed to include a diverse range of ligand precursors. Importantly, the method is effective for a ligand precursor that contains several acidic protons and for which traditional methods of carbene formation are not suitable., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2012)

Neutral tetrakis(methylimidazole) (1) and the novel cationic tetrakis(methylimidazolium) (2) calixarenes have been prepared and their solid-state and solution behaviour examined. The neutral imidazole forms a mono-zwitterion at elevated temperature, a feature that has been observed both in solution and in the solid-state. The cationic imidazolium exhibits a range of hydrogen bond interactions with anions, with the titration curves upon binding to basic anions suggesting sequential binding to both the upper and lower rims., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2012)

A series of new 1D chain and 2D coordination polymers with cyclotriguaiacylene-type ligands are reported. A zig-zag 1D coordination chain is found in complex [Cd(2)(4ph4py)(NO(3))(3)(H(2)O)(2)(DMA)(2)]·(NO(3))·(DMA)(4), where 4ph4py = tris[4-(4-pyridyl)benzoyl]-cyclotriguaiacylene and DMA = dimethylacetamide, while complex [Zn(4ph4py)(2)(CF(3)COO)(H(2)O)]·(CF(3)COO)(NMP)(7), where NMP = N-methylpyrrolidone, has a doubly bridged coordination chain structure. Complexes [M(3ph3py)(NO(3))(2)]·(NMP)(4) where M = Co or Zn, 3ph3py = tris[3-(3-pyridyl)benzoyl]cyclotriguaiacylene, are isostructural and feature 1D ladder coordination chains. Complexes [Cd(2)(4ph4py)(2)(NO(3))(4)(NMP)]·(NMP)(9)(H(2)O)(4) and [Co(4ph4py)(H(2)O)(2)]·(NO(3))(2)·(DMF)(2), where DMF = dimethylformamide, both have (3,4)-connected 2D coordination polymers with a rare (4(2).6(2))(4.6(2))(2) topology. A 2D coordination polymer with this topology is also found in complex [Co(2)(3ph4py)(2)(NO(3))(H(2)O)(5)]·(NO(3))(3)·(DMF)(9) where 3ph4py = tris[3-(4-pyridyl)benzoyl]cyclotriguaiacylene. All 2D coordination polymer complexes are interpenetrating or polycatenating. [Co(2)(3ph4py)(2)(NO(3))(H(2)O)(5)](3+)polymers form a 2D→3D polycatenation showing self-complementary "hand-shake" interactions between the host-type ligands.
