The versatility of a bulky bis(imino)carbazolate ligand in lead(ii) chemistry is illustrated by the synthesis of a soluble, heteroleptic lead(ii) fluoride and several halide (Cl, Br and I), amide and hydrocarbyl congeners. All complexes have been structurally authenticated, and a full set of 207Pb NMR data is discussed.

Molecular characterization of compounds present in highly complex mixtures such as petroleum is proving to be one of the main analytical challenges. Heavy fractions, such as asphaltenes, exhibit immense molecular and isomeric complexity. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS) with its unequalled resolving power, mass accuracy and dynamic range can address the isobaric complexity. Nevertheless, isomers remain largely inaccessible. Therefore, another dimension of separation is required. Recently, ion mobility mass spectrometry has revealed great potential for isomer description. In this study, the combination of trapped ion mobility and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (TIMS-FTICR) is used to obtain information on the structural features and isomeric diversity of vanadium petroporphyrins present in heavy petroleum fractions. The ion mobility spectra provided information on the isomeric diversity of the different classes of porphyrins. The determination of the collision cross section (CCS) from the peak apex allows us to hypothesize about the structural aspects of the petroleum molecules. In addition, the ion mobility signal full width at half maximum (FWHM) was used as a measure for isomeric diversity. Finally, theoretical CCS determinations were conducted first on core structures and then on alkylated petroporphyrins taking advantage of the linear correlation between the CCS and the alkylation level. This allowed the proposal of putative structures in agreement with the experimental results. The authors believe that the presented workflow will be useful for the structural prediction of real unknowns in highly complex mixtures.

The first families of alkaline-earth stannylides [Ae(SnPh 3 ) 2 ·(thf) x ] (Ae = Ca, x = 3, 1 ; Sr, x = 3, 2 ; Ba, x = 4, 3 ) and [Ae{Sn(SiMe 3 ) 3 } 2 ·(thf) x ] (Ae = Ca, x = 4, 4 ; Sr, x = 4, 5 ; Ba, x = 4, 6 ), where Ae is a large alkaline earth with direct Ae-Sn bonds, are presented. All complexes have been characterised by high-resolution solution NMR spectroscopy, including 119 Sn NMR, and by X-ray diffraction crystallography. The molecular structures of [Ca(SnPh 3 ) 2 ·(thf) 4 ] ( 1' ), [Sr(SnPh 3 ) 2 ·(thf) 4 ] ( 2' ), [Ba(SnPh 3 ) 2 ·(thf) 5 ] ( 3' ), 4 , 5 and [Ba{Sn(SiMe 3 ) 3 } 2 ·(thf) 5 ] ( 6' ), most of which crystallised as higher thf solvates than their parents 1-6 , were established by XRD analysis; the experimentally determined Sn-Ae-Sn' angles lie in the range 158.10(3)-179.33(4)°. In a given series, the 119 Sn NMR chemical shifts are slightly deshielded upon descending group 2 from Ca to Ba, while the silyl-substituted stannyls are much more shielded than the phenyl ones ( δ 119 Sn/ppm: 1' , -133.4; 2' , -123.6; 3' , -95.5; 4 , -856.8; 5 , -848.2; 6' , -792.7). The bonding and electronic properties of these complexes were also analysed by DFT calculations. The combined spectroscopic, crystallographic and computational analysis of these complexes provide some insight into the main features of these unique families of homoleptic complexes. A comprehensive DFT study (Wiberg bond index, QTAIM and energy decomposition analysis) points at a primarily ionic Ae-Sn bonding, with a small covalent contribution, in these series of complexes; the Sn-Ae-Sn' angle is associated with a flat energy potential surface around its minimum, consistent with the broad range of values determined by experimental and computational methods., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Scalar coupling in organolithium systems can provide access to useful structural and dynamic informations. In this work, we propose a robust method for the accurate measurement of the effective 2 J Li-Li coupling constant in tetramerics alkyllithium aggregates. This crucial information, unavalaible to date, gives a simple access to various structural factors, including the dynamics, solvation and the operative steric hindrance of alkyl chains.

This work aims to study the role of bentonite, Na + montmorillonite (Na + MMT), as a filler to design a new poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based membrane for the pervaporation of an azeotropic water/ethanol mixture to enhance its separation efficiency. PVA/Na + MMT nanocomposite membranes, containing different ratios of Na + MMT ( i.e. , 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt%), were prepared using the solvent casting method and crosslinked with maleic acid. The interactions between the PVA polymer and MMT were determined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Structural characterization by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed that the nanoclay structure was well-exfoliated and distributed in the crosslinked PVA matrix. To determine the thermal stability of different membranes, thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were used. The mechanical properties of pure PVA and the intercalated polymer material were studied. The total synthesis of spiromastilactone A is reported for the first time. A swift strategy is presented that involves a pivotal enantioselective nucleophilic 1,2-alkylation of an aldehyde prepared in four quantitative synthetic steps from commercial 2,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid. This key reaction, which was described very recently by our group and carried out here on a gram scale, involves cheap and easily accessible tricoordinated chiral lithium amido zincates. The resulting enantioenriched secondary alcohol is involved afterward in an efficient intramolecular cyclization providing the phthalide core of the target, and two quantitative additional steps aiming to deprotect the phenol groups then introduce chlorine atoms end the synthetic scheme. Spiromastilactone A is obtained in 44% overall yield in eight synthetic steps, among which six are quantitative, and the 89 : 11 enantiomeric ratio (78% ee value) is in favor of the right enantiomer (R configuration).

Polyalphaolefins (PAOs) are saturated alpha olefin oligomers used as a base stock oil for synthetic lubricants. The synthetic base stocks are manufactured from linear alpha olefins by catalytic oligomerization processes. The aim of this work was the characterization of different PAO grades, synthesized from different linear alpha olefins using two oligomerization processes, acid and metallocene catalyses. Negative ion atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) coupled with ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry (IMS-MS) permitted the detection of intact PAO adducts with either chloride, bromide or iodide ions using halogenated solvents (e.g. dichloromethane, dibromomethane and diiodomethane) and toluene as the dopant. The best signal-to-noise ratio was obtained with dichloromethane. The APPI mass spectra displayed characteristic ion distributions for high viscosity PAO grades. The mass shift between two adjacent ions permitted the identification of repeating units and consequently the monomers of alpha olefins used to manufacture the PAO. For low PAO grades, the halide anion adducts were not detected as they are less stable. The IMS-MS data, as well as the correlated variables, i.e. the drift time and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the IMS peaks, can be used to differentiate polyalphaolefins of the same grade but differently synthesized.

The advancement of molecular electronics and spintronics requires novel hybrid materials with synergistic magnetic and electrical properties. The non-covalent functionalization of highly conductive graphene with magnetically bistable spin crossover (SCO) complexes may yield such a multifunctional material. In this regard, a graphene-Fe(ii) SCO complex hybrid (Gr-SCO) has been prepared by non-covalently anchoring a pyrene decorated SCO complex with solution phase pre-exfoliated few-layer graphene sheets. SQUID magnetometry revealed the preservation of SCO in the Gr-SCO hybrid material exhibiting more gradual spin state switching characteristics than in the bulk molecular complex. This persistence of SCO of a molecular Fe(ii) complex upon anchoring on the graphene surface has consequences towards the realization of SCO based applications: in (i) reversible spin state dependent band gap tuning of graphene with an SCO complex analogous to chemical doping of graphene, and (ii) to probe the spin state dependence of electrical conductivity modulation by wiring the anchoring group (pyrene) tethered SCO complex between chemically robust few-layer graphene electrodes.

The competition between basicity and nucleophilicity of two standard organolithium reagents was studied using DFT. Comparing the reactivity of solvated (MeLi)2 and (LDA)2 toward propanal finally explains why methyllithium adds onto the carbonyl while LDA deprotonates the α-position, in accord with experiment and Ireland's deprotonation TS.

Novel 2,3-heterodisubstituted β-cyclodextrin derivatives were designed as artificial enzymes to degrade chemical warfare agents. One of them reduced the acetylcholinesterase inhibitory potential by soman faster than its monosubstituted analog.

An NMR study of a 1 : 1 mixture of a chiral lithium amide (4a) and n-BuLi shows that depending on the solvent employed (Et2O or THF) a mixed aggregate can form in proportions that are directly related to the ees measured during the enantioselective alkylation of o-tolualdehyde by these same species.

Determination of the structure and solvation states of organolithium aggregates in complex solution remains a challenging task. Here, we show that (1)H Pure Shift DOSY NMR provides better resolution spectra without overlapping, even for complex solutions of mixed aggregates of n-BuLi/n-BuOLi. This ensures the direct observation of the apparent diffusion constant for each component in the solution and therefore allows a fast assignment of aggregation states, and solvation degree.

A multicomponent organocatalyzed highly diastereo- and enantioselective synthesis of CF(3)-substituted aziridines is described. This reaction of in situ generated CF(3)CHN(2) and aldimines was realized by chiral Brønsted acid catalysis. The utility of the products is illustrated by easy access to β-CF(3) isocysteine and aziridine-containing dipeptides.

The straightforward asymmetric construction of bio-relevant Δ(2)-pyrazolines having either N-(thio)amide or N-acetyl functional groups and flanked by aryl substituents such as phenol at C3 and C5 has been achieved through an enantioselective phase transfer organocatalytic addition of N-Boc hydrazine to chalcones followed by a transprotection sequence allowing N-Boc transformation into N-CXNHR (X = S, O) or N-Ac functional groups. This approach was applied to a straightforward elaboration of chiral monoamine oxidase inhibitor derivatives.

A substoichiometric enantioselective version of the extremely fast nucleophilic addition of Alk-Li to RCHO is made possible thanks to a thorough analysis of the aggregation phenomena involved in the reaction: calculated quantities of LiCl must be added to the medium at the right time to keep the catalytic cycle running.

The addition reaction of organometallic reagents to N-(tert-butanesulfinyl)-α-fluoroenimines was studied. Depending of the nature of the organometallic species (Grignard reagents or zincate complexes), we were able to control the configuration of the newly created stereogenic centers in high yields with good to high diastereomeric ratios. The chiral β-fluoro allylamines are key synthons toward the synthesis of fluorinated pseudopeptides bearing a fluoroolefin moiety as a peptide bond mimic.

In spite of numerous reports dealing with the use of 1,4-dihydropyridines as carriers to deliver biological active compounds to the brain, this chemical delivery system (CDS) suffers from poor stability of the 1,4-dihydropyridine derivatives towards oxidation and hydration reactions seriously limiting further investigations in vivo. In an attempt to overcome these limitations, we report herein the first biological evaluation of more stable annellated NADH models in the quinoline series as relevant neuroactive drug-carrier candidates. The radiolabeled 1,4-dihydroquinoline [(11)C] was prepared to be subsequently peripherally injected in rats. The injected animals were sacrificed and brains were collected. The radioactivity measured in rat brain indicated a rapid penetration of the carrier [(11)C] into the CNS. HPLC analysis of brain homogenates showed that oxidation of [(11)C] into the corresponding quinolinium salt [(11)C] was completed in less than 5 min. An in vivo evaluation in mice is also reported to illustrate the potential of such 1,4-dihydroquinoline derivatives to transport a neuroactive drug in the CNS. For this purpose, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), well known to poorly cross the brain blood barrier (BBB) was connected to this 1,4-dihydroquinoline-type carrier. After i.p. injection of 1,4-dihydroquinoline-GABA derivative in mice, a significant alteration of locomotor activity (LMA) was observed presumably resulting from an enhancement of central GABAergic activity. These encouraging results give strong evidence for the capacity of carrier-GABA derivative to cross the BBB and exert a pharmacological effect on the CNS. This study paves the way for further progress in designing new redox chemical delivery systems.

Reaction of Ni(0) in the presence of iodoarylethers leads, after syn intramolecular carbonickelation of the triple bond, to nucleophilic vinylnickels which can be trapped, in a tandem process, by various electrophiles introduced at the onset of the reaction.

This work deals with the design of a bio-oxidisable prodrug strategy for the development of new central selective acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. This prodrug approach is expected to reduce peripheral anticholinesterase activity responsible for various side effects observed with presently marketed AChE inhibitors. The design of these new AChE inhibitors in quinoline series is roughly based on cyclic analogues of rivastigmine. The key activation step of the prodrug involves an oxidation of an N-alkyl-1,4-dihydroquinoline 1 to the corresponding quinolinium salt 2 unmasking the positive charge required for binding to the catalytic anionic site of the enzyme. The synthesis of a set of 1,4-dihydroquinolines 1 and their corresponding quinolinium salts 2 is presented. An in vitro biological evaluation revealed that while all reduced forms 1 were unable to exhibit any anticholinesterase activity (IC50 > 10(6) nM), most of the quinolinium salts 2 displayed high AChE inhibitory activity (IC50 ranging from 6 microM to 7 nM). These preliminary in vitro assays validate the use of these cyclic analogues of rivastigmine in quinoline series as appealing chemical tools for further in vivo development of this bio-oxidisable prodrug approach.

The exchange of Me(6)Li aggregated to a lithium amide by (7)LiCl leads to a specific isotope distribution whose microscopic origin is assigned to an edge-to-edge interaction between the R(2)NLi-MeLi aggregate and (LiCl)(2) by NMR and Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics.

Selenenylated dihydropyrans prepared by inverse demand hetero-Diels-Alder reactions undergo oxidative rearrangement when treated with H(2)O(2), leading to tetrahydrofuran-2-ones by ring contraction.

This work reports the synthesis of new axially chiral bridged 2,2'-bipyridines 1 and pyridylmonooxazolines (pymox) 2. The potential of these new axially chiral N,N-ligands was evaluated in asymmetric catalytic cyclopropanation of styrene derivatives 22a-c with diazoesters 21a,b. While 2,2'-bipyridines 1a-c afforded the corresponding cyclopropanes 23a-f in up to 65% ee, pymoxs 2a-e gave somewhat lower enantioselectivities (up to 53% ee). Both classes of ligands produced trans-cyclopropanes 23a-f as the major isomer, although with modest diasteroselectivities (56 : 44 to 78 : 22). A structure-stereoselectivity relationship study of ligands 1 and 2 identified the chiral biaryl axis as being mostly responsible for the enantioselective performances of these ligands.

The replacement of the amide bond in a peptide backbone is a promising strategy in peptidomimetic drug research. Over the various amide bond surrogates, the fluoroolefin moiety has been successfully developed as an effective mimic. Today, fluorine-containing compounds account for a large proportion of new active molecules in life sciences. The synthesis of fluoroolefin peptide mimics is not a trivial task and innovative approaches often need to be addressed, in particular for the stereocontrol of the double bond configuration and the chiral centres adjacent to the fluoroalkene. These fluorinated peptidomimetics have been synthesised and evaluated as metabolically stable and/or conformationally constrained analogs of enzyme inhibitors, and as tools for probing the function, structure, and binding process of receptors.

The synthesis of three novel racemic phenylpyridine-carbamate analogues of rhazinilam and their biological evaluation as inhibitors of microtubule assembly and disassembly by interaction with tubulin are described. The sterically hindered ortho-disubstituted biaryl unit as the challenging key structural element is first obtained by a sequential regiocontrolled nucleophilic addition of a lithium ortho-lithiohomobenzylic alkoxide species to 3-bromo-5-oxazolyl pyridine as the electrophile and a subsequent oxidation step. The incorporation of the amino group by replacement of the bromide has been achieved using a Buchwald-Hartwig amination coupling. Ultimate deprotection steps furnished free-amino and free-hydroxyl appendages which were connected by phosgenation to furnish the nine-membered median carbamate ring.

The synthesis and photophysical properties of a new terpyridine-based europium(III) chelate (Eu (TMT)-AP3) designed for peptide and protein labelling in aqueous solution phase is described. In order to obtain a stable, easy to handle, versatile and efficient labelling agent, a reactive aminopropargyl arm has been introduced onto the terpyridine moiety. As preliminary biochemical applications the chelate has been 1) efficiently covalently attached onto a representative biomolecule-monoclonal antibody-and 2) converted into iodoacetamido and aldehyde derivatives, and the photoluminescent Eu (TMT)-AP3 was grafted onto cysteine and lysine amino acid residues respectively. These two different solution phase labelling methods yielded original fluorogenic FRET based probes suitable for "in vitro" detection of caspase-3 protease, a key mediator of apoptosis of mammalian cells.

A solid phase approach for the preparation of peptides attached to a redox chemical delivery system derived from stable annulated NADH models is reported. The synthesis starts with the grafting on a Merrifield resin of quinoline 4b, precursor of the redox carrier. From the resulting quinoline supported resin 4d, the stepwise SPPS of both octapeptide OP (RPGLLDLK) and octadecaneuropeptide ODN (QATVGDVNTDRPGLLDLK), two neuropeptides exhibiting anorexigenic effects, was successfully achieved by conventional methods. Quaternization of the quinoline moiety prior to cleavage of the modified OP and ODN peptides from the resin, led to the expected quinolinium salt 8a and 8b respectively linked to OP or ODN peptides. Finally, the reduction with NaBH4 monitored by UV-vis, provided the desired annulated NADH models as peptides carriers with either the OP (11a,b) or ODN (12a,b) moiety.

After the study of different phenylselanyl group activators, halogenation by N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) has been shown to be the most suitable manner for cyclizing beta-phenylselanyl amines into aziridines and also enabled production of oxazolidin-2-ones from N-Boc beta-phenylselanyl amines in excellent yield.
