Abstract

This paper reports the study of structural and luminescence parameters of a seven-coordination compound containing β-diketone butyl methoxy-dibenzoyl-methane (bmdm) and triphenylphosphine oxide (tppo), both acting as antennae. The complex was obtained by substitution of water molecules in the [RE(bmdm)3(H2O)2] precursor, where RE = Eu3+or Gd3+. The structural data determined by X-ray monocrystal diffraction reveal that the compound crystallizes in a triclinic space group P1 and the coordination polyhedron is near a capped trigonal prism, with a symmetry site near a C2vpoint group. The ground state geometry was determined using Sparkle/AM1 implemented in mopac2009 software, and compared with that obtained by monocrystal. The triplet (T) and singlet (S) levels were determined using INDO/S-CIS implemented in the Zindo software, the results obtained are very close to the experimental measurements. The intensity parameters 2and 4were calculated from emission spectrum. The high value of the 2parameter (37.2 × 10−20cm2) shows a highly polarizable environment around the europium ion and a high degree of covalence between the ligand and metal, showing that tppo molecules contribute to an increase in the covalence between the metal and ligand. The transfer rates show a predominance in the transfer process when compared with back transfer ones, with the main channel of transfer processes: T → 5D1and T → 5D0. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A newly developed multireference (MR) ab initiomethod for the calculation of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra was calibrated through the calculation of the ground- and excited state properties of seven high-spin (S= 3/2) Co(ii) complexes. The MCD spectra were computed by the explicit treatment of spin–orbit coupled (SOC) and spin–spin coupled (SSC) N-electron states. For the complexes studied in this work, we found that the SOC is more important than the SSC for determining the ground state zero field splitting (ZFS). Our computed ZFS parameter Dfor the [Co(PPh3)2Cl2] model complex is −17.6 cm−1, which is reasonably close to the experimental value of −14.8 cm−1. Generally, the computed absorption and MCD spectra are in fair agreement with experiment for all investigated complexes. Thus, reliable electronic structure and spectroscopic predictions for medium sized transition metal complexes are feasible on the basis of this methodology. This characterizes the presented method as a promising tool for MCD spectra interpretations of transition metal complexes in a variety of areas of chemistry and biology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A facile ionic self-assembly method was used to synthesize technologically important derivatives of perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA). This extremely facile one-pot synthesis was performed in water and provided relatively pure complexes precipitated from water in high yield at room temperature. This is particularly interesting because the synthesis of most PTCDA derivatives using conventional methods often requires relatively complicated and harsh conditions. The self-assembly of the complexes was studied under different conditions. In ethanol–water or toluene–acetone binary solvents, long aggregates in the range of micrometers were obtained. Through a slow evaporation of toluene, one of the complexes can form ultralong aggregates, up to ∼4 mm in length. The structural packing of these systems is dominated by the stacking of the rigid perylene disks, embedded in an aliphatic soft matrix that may or may not crystallize, as evidenced by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Abstract

A series of 1 : 1 iron(iii) complexes of sterically hindered and systematically modified tridentate 3N donor ligands have been isolated and studied as functional models for extradiol-cleaving catechol dioxygenases. All of them are of the type [Fe(L)Cl3], where L is N-methyl-N′-(pyrid-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine (L1), N-ethyl-N′-(pyrid-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine (L2), N-benzyl-N′-(pyrid-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine (L3), N,N-dimethyl-N′-(pyrid-2-ylmethyl)ethylenediamine (L4), N′-methyl-N′-(pyrid-2-ylmethyl)-N,N-dimethylethylenediamine (L5), N′-ethyl-N′-(pyrid-2-ylmethyl)-N,N-dimethylethylenediamine (L6) and N′-benzyl-N′-(pyrid-2-ylmethyl)-N,N-dimethylethylenediamine (L7). They have been characterized by elemental analysis and spectral and electrochemical methods. The X-ray crystal structures of the complexes [Fe(L2)Cl3] 2, [Fe(L3)Cl3] 3and [Fe(L7)Cl3] 7have been successfully determined. All the three complexes possess a distorted octahedral coordination geometry in which the ligand is facially coordinated to iron(iii) and the chloride ions occupy the remaining coordination sites. Upon replacing the N-ethyl group on the terminal nitrogen donor in 2by the bulky N-benzyl group as in 3, the terminal Fe–N bond distance increases slightly from 2.229(5) to 2.244(5) . Upon incorporating the sterically demanding N-benzyl group on the central nitrogen donor in 4to obtain 7, the central Fe–Naminebond distance increases from 2.181(5) to 2.299(2) . The catecholate adducts [Fe(L)(DBC)(Cl)] and [Fe(L)(DBC)(Sol)]+, where H2DBC is 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol and Sol = solvent (H2O/DMF), have been generated in situand their spectral and redox properties and dioxygenase activities have been studied in N,N-dimethylformamide and dichloromethane solutions. The adducts [Fe(L)(DBC)(Sol)]+undergo cleavage of DBC2−in the presence of molecular oxygen to afford both intra- and extradiol cleavage products. The extradiol products are higher in dichloromethane than in DMF solution and the extradiol to intradiol product selectivity (E/I, 7.2 : 1–18.5 : 1) observed decreases upon increasing the steric bulk of N-alkyl substituent on the terminal nitrogen atom and upon incorporating an N-alkyl substituent on the central nitrogen atom. The plot of log(kO2) vs.energy of the low energy catecholate–iron(iii) LMCT band is linear, which is consistent with the proposal that the LMCT band energy corresponds to the energy needed for a spin-inversion process at the iron center upon dioxygen attack. Also, the rate of oxygenation is dictated by the solvent as well as the Lewis acidity of the iron(iii) center, as shown by the linear plot of log(kO2) vs.E1/2of the Fe(iii)/Fe(ii) redox potentials of the [Fe(L)(Sol)3]3+complexes. Abstract

Potential catalysts for the hydroamination of 2-(2-phenylethynyl)aniline 2which have been identified through high throughput screening methods were investigated. Two complexes were shown to be highly active hydroamination catalysts in acetone: the in situcombinations of [Rh(CO)2Cl]2–mesBIAN–NaBF4(mesBIAN = bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenylimino)acenapthene) and [Ir(COD)Cl]2–NaBF4(COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene). The isolated complexes [M(N–N)XCl]BF4(M = Rh, Ir; N–N = bidentate nitrogen donor ligand; X = CO or Cp*) were found to be inactive as catalysts for the conversion of 2to 3. However, chloride abstraction from these complexes through the addition of AgBF4was found to generate extremely active catalysts. Particularly active was the complex [Rh(CO)ClmesBIAN]–AgBF4(5 mol%) which achieved complete conversion of 2to 3in 12 minutes at 50 °C. Also identified was the formation of the unusual product, N-(2-methylvinyl)-2-phenylindole 5, catalysed by [IrCp*Cl2]2–NaBF4from starting material 2viathe incorporation of one molecule of acetone. The surface covalent attachment of fluorescent axles of indolocarbazole enables anion templation to be exploited in the formation of pseudorotaxane assemblies viathe threading of neutral isophthalamide macrocycles. In utilising the surface of polystyrene beads this threading process can be followed by both magnetic resonance methods and changes in the axle fluorescent emission spectrum. The analogous surface assembly and anion templated threading can be achieved, with fluoride and sulfate, on silica nanoparticles where anion recognition and macrocycle threading are associated with equivalent and specific optical change. Abstract

Four new one-dimensional (1D) polymeric complexes, {[Cu4(L1)2(µ-Br)2(µ4-CO3)]Br(ClO4)3·3H2O}n(1), {[Cu2L2(µ-Cl)Cl2] (ClO4)2·H2O}n(2), {[Cu2L3(µ-Cl)2](ClO4)2}n(3), and {[Cu2L4(µ-Cl)2](ClO4)2}n(4), have been synthesized and characterized, where L1= N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis(3′-aminopropyl)-1,3-propylenediamine, L2= N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis(2′-aminoethyl)-1,3-propylenediamine, L3= N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis(2′-aminoethyl)-1,4-butylenediamine, L4= N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis(2′-aminoethyl)-1, 6-hexylenediamine. X-Ray structure analysis revealed that the polymeric complexes, created by the bridging groups which are exhibited in the formula, present different 1D coordination motifs: double-stranded chains with voids of 43.5 Å2for 1, sigmoid chains for 2, zigzag chains for 3and 4with different coordination polyhedra. Various hydrogen bonding interactions such as N–HCl, N–HO, C–HCl, N–HBr and O–HBr join the polymeric chains to generate two-dimensional networks with bigger voids. Magnetic susceptibility data were fitted according to the molecular structures using Hamiltonians: H= −2J1(S2S3+ S1S4) − 2J2(S2S1) − 2J3(S1S3+ S2S4) − 2J4(S3S4), which corresponds to a rectangular array of spins for 1, and H= −2JS1S2corresponds to a dinuclear array of spins for 2, 3and 4. It was found that the coupling constants of 1are −60, −113, −54 and −11 cm−1, and those of 2, 3, and 4are −2.46, −1.56 and −0.15 cm−1, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper presents the application of laboratory X-ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectroscopy (XAFS) in the field of iron coordination chemistry, especially for compounds with larger organic ligands and usually low contents of the metal. The goal was to compare the efficiency of the laboratory setup with the synchrotron setups usually applied for the determination of the oxidation and coordination states of heavier elements and to investigate the limits of the tabletop system for the discrimination of complexes with similar ligands. For the measurement of iron K-edge XANES spectra at the laboratory, an X-ray tube-based spectrometer using the von Hamos geometry with a Highly Annealed Pyrolytic Graphite (HAPG) mosaic crystal optic was used, and synchrotron measurements were performed at the beamline ID21 at the ESRF. Different iron complexes, such as iron(II)-2,6-Bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine systems, iron(III)-porphyrins and human hemoglobin, have been successfully measured with both setups. With an energy resolving power of about E/ΔE = 4000 around the iron K-edge for the laboratory setup, the results can compete with synchrotron measurements with a Si(111) crystal monochromator and a resolving power of about E/ΔE = 5070. The findings of this work show that laboratory XAFS is also beneficial for applications in coordination chemistry such as the investigation of metal complexes with organic ligands. Thus, the results complement the ongoing continuous developments and improvements of various laboratory XAFS setups with high resolution, moderate measuring times and standardized sample preparation techniques as well as increasing applications in multiple fields of analytical chemistry.
