A theoretical study of the Mn trimer adsorbed on the noble metal surfaces Au(111) and Cu(111) is reported. The calculations were performed using first-principles methods within the density functional theory and the generalized gradient approximation in the collinear and non-collinear magnetic phases. The system was modeled by considering a surface unit cell of 25 atoms to improve the trimer's isolation on the surface. We evaluated the trimer as a linear chain and forming triangular structures. The triangular trimer can be adsorbed in two possible configurations, above an empty surface triangle site (Δ) or on a triangle with a surface atom at the center in a hexagonal structure (H). The difference is the coordination of the Mn with surface atoms. We studied the antiferromagnetic (AF), ferromagnetic (FM), and non-collinear (NC) magnetic cases. As a result, the lowest energy configuration on both metals is the AF Δ configuration, which has an isosceles triangle shape. In comparison, the NC and the FM configurations adopt an equilateral geometry. The same trend was observed for the H configurations, but they are less bonded. The results are supported by calculating the spin-polarized electronic structure and the electronic charge transfer. The uptake of arsenite [As(iii)] and arsenate [As(v)] by functionalized calcium alginate (Ca-Alg) beads from aqueous solutions was investigated. Ca-Alg beads were protonated with poly-l-lysine (PLL) or polyethyleneimine (PEI) using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide/ N -hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) or glutaraldehyde (GA) as crosslinking agents. Four types of protonated beads were prepared: Ca-Alg-EDC/NHS (PLL or PEI) and Ca-Alg-GA (PLL or PEI). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in total attenuated reflection mode (FTIR-ATR), analysis showed presence and increased intensity of bands corresponding to OH, NH, CH 2 and CH 3 groups in modifications with both polycations. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis and atomic force microscopy of all modified capsules showed an increase in thermal stability and uniformity of the capsules, respectively. Ca-Alg-EDC/NHS-PLL beads had the maximum adsorption capacity of [As(v)] (312.9 ± 4.7 μg g -1 of the alginate) at pH 7.0 and 15 minute exposure, while Ca-Alg-EDC/NHS-PEI beads had the maximum adsorption capacity of [As(iii)] (1052.1 ± 4.6 μg g -1 of alginate). However, all these EDC containing beads were degraded in the presence of citrate. Ca-Alg-GA-PEI beads removed 252.8 ± 9.7 μg of [As(v)] μg g -1 of alginate and 524.7 ± 5.3 de [As(iii)] μg g -1 of alginate, resulting the most stable capsules and suitable for As removal., Competing Interests: There are no conflict of interest to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

Functional confectionery can be exploited as a vehicle for the protection of phenolic compounds (PCs) and for enhancing absorption during the gastrointestinal (GI) process. In this study, a confection containing 20% of mango bagasse (MB), gelatin and pectin was formulated. The PC profile, antioxidant capacity, in vitro bioaccessibility and apparent permeability (Papp) during mouth-stomach-intestine digestion (15, 30, 60, 120 min) and in vitro colonic fermentation (6, 12, 24 h) were evaluated for MB and the mango bagasse confection (MBC). HPLC-DAD analysis showed that mangiferin (830.69 μg g -1 ) was the most abundant compound in MBC. Total PCs (4.14 mg g -1 ), quercetin (244.83 μg g -1 ), and gallic acid (GA) (285.43 μg g -1 ) were highly bioaccessible mainly at the intestine at 60-120 min of digestion. GA was the most bioaccessible compound. Total flavonoids (TFs) and condensed tannins (CTs) had the maximum bioaccessibility in the mouth and stomach, respectively. For the permeability studies, PCs showed efflux rather than uptake in the intestine. Those compounds that exhibited intestinal absorption were mangiferin > GA > total PCs > TFs, whereas quercetin and CT absorption was negligible. The antioxidant capacity remained unchanged along the GI, mangiferin and quercetin being the most likely compounds to exert this activity. Overall results indicate that MBC has higher bioaccessibility, absorption and antioxidant capacity than MB, suggesting an effective protective role of gelatin and pectin, giving insight into the potential of MBC as a functional food.

The positive health effects of phenolic compounds (PCs) have been extensively reported in the literature. An understanding of their bioaccessibility and bioavailability is essential for the elucidation of their health benefits. Before reaching circulation and exerting bioactions in target tissues, numerous interactions take place before and during digestion with either the plant or host's macromolecules that directly impact the organism and modulate their own bioaccessibility and bioavailability. The present work is focused on the gastrointestinal (GI) interactions that are relevant to the absorption and metabolism of PCs and how these interactions impact their pharmacokinetic profiles. Non-digestible cell wall components (fiber) interact intimately with PCs and delay their absorption in the small intestine, instead carrying them to the large intestine. PCs not bound to fiber interact with digestible nutrients in the bolus where they interfere with the digestion and absorption of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, cholesterol, bile salts and micronutrients through the inhibition of digestive enzymes and enterocyte transporters and the disruption of micelle formation. PCs internalized by enterocytes may reach circulation (through transcellular or paracellular transport), be effluxed back into the lumen (P-glycoprotein, P-gp) or be metabolized by phase I and phase II enzymes. Some PCs can inhibit P-gp or phase I/II enzymes, which can potentially lead to drug-nutrient interactions. The absorption and pharmacokinetic parameters are modified by all of the interactions within the digestive tract and by the presence of other PCs. Undesirable interactions have promoted the development of nanotechnological approaches to promote the bioaccessibility, bioavailability, and bioefficacy of PCs.
