Interaction of the trilacunary 9-tungstosilicate [A-α-SiW 9 O 34 ] 10- with cobalt(ii), nickel(ii) and zinc(ii) ions in pH 9 aqueous medium at room temperature led to the formation of the respective M 4 -containing heteropolytungstates [M 4 (OH) 3 (H 2 O) 2 (α-SiW 10 O 36.5 ) 2 ] 13- (M = Co 2+ (1), Ni 2+ (2), and Zn 2+ (3)). Polyanions 1-3 were characterized in the solid state by single-crystal XRD, FT-IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric and elemental analyses. Electrochemical studies showed that the Co 2+ ions in 1 can be oxidized to Co 3+ and the CVs of the W VI centers of the polyanions feature well-defined and chemically reversible reduction waves. Magnetic measurements on 1 and 2 showed paramagnetism with complex ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. A model was presented for extracting the exchange constants for the magnetic exchange interaction.

The 15-copper(ii)-containing 36-tungsto-4-silicates [Cu15O2(OH)10X(A-α-SiW9O34)4]25- (X = Cl, 1; Br, 2) have been prepared in 70% yield by reaction of the trilacunary 9-tungstosilicate precursor [A-α-SiW9O34]10- with Cu2+ ions in aqueous pH 8 medium. Both polyanions 1 and 2 were isolated as hydrated mixed potassium/sodium salts and characterized in the solid state by FT-IR, TGA, single-crystal XRD, and elemental analysis. DC magnetic susceptibility measurements from 1.8-300 K established the ground state to be paramagnetic with a magnetic moment corresponding to 15 uncoupled Cu2+ (S = 1/2) ions. EPR measurements and simulations were consistent with this analysis. Electrochemical studies were performed for polyanions 1 and 2 dissolved in solution to elucidate the electroactivity of both copper and tungstate sites. Using 2 as a representative example, the electrocatalytic activity towards CO2 reduction upon deposition on a glassy carbon electrode surface, while retaining selectivity relative to hydrogen evolution, was demonstrated.

Polyoxometalates covalently linked to one or two spiropyran entities have been isolated. These organic-inorganic hybrids exhibit multi-electrochromic and photochromic properties.

The discrete heteropolyaurate [Au(III)(4)O(4)(Se(IV)O(3))(4)](4-) (Au(4)Se(4)) represents only the second member of this class ever reported, and was synthesized via one-pot room temperature condensation in aqueous medium. was structurally characterized in the solid state and in solution by single-crystal XRD, TGA, FT-IR, (77)Se NMR, mass spectrometry and electrochemistry.

Four coordination networks based on the {ε-PMo(V)(8)Mo(VI)(4)O(40)(OH)(4)Zn(4)} Keggin unit (εZn) have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. (TBA)(3){PMo(V)(8)Mo(VI)(4)O(36)(OH)(4)Zn(4)}[C(6)H(4)(COO)(2)](2) (ε(isop)(2)) is a 2D material with monomeric εZn units connected via 1,3 benzenedicarboxylate (isop) linkers and tetrabutylammonium (TBA) counter-cations lying between the planes. In (TPA)(3){PMo(V)(8)Mo(VI)(4)O(37)(OH)(3)Zn(4)}[C(6)H(3)(COO)(3)] (TPA[ε(trim)](∞)), 1D inorganic chains formed by the connection of εZn POMs, via Zn-O bonds, are linked via 1,3,5 benzenetricarboxylate (trim) ligands into a 2D compound with tetrapropylammonium (TPA) cations as counter-cations. (TBA){PMo(V)(8)Mo(VI)(4)O(40)Zn(4)}(C(7)H(4)N(2))(2)(C(7)H(5)N(2))(2)·12H(2)O (ε(bim)(4)) is a molecular material with monomeric εZn POMs bound to terminal benzimidazole (bim) ligands. Finally, (TBA)(C(10)H(10)N(4))(2)(HPO(3)){PMo(V)(8)Mo(VI)(4)O(40)Zn(4)}(2)(C(10)H(9)N(4))(3)(C(10)H(8)N(4)) (ε(2)(pazo)(4)) is a 1D compound with dimeric (εZn)(2) POMs connected by HPO(3)(2-) ions and terminal para-azobipyridine (pazo) ligands. In this compound an unusual bond cleavage of the central N[double bond, length as m-dash]N bond of the pazo ligand is observed. We report also a green chemistry-type one-step synthesis method carried out in water at room temperature using ε(2)(pazo)(4) and ε(isop)(2) as reducing agent of graphite oxide (GO) to obtain graphene (G). The POM@G hybrids were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and cyclic voltammetry.

The structures of two families of hybrid organic-inorganic polyoxometalates (POMs) functionalized by covalently grafted carboxylate or bisphosphonate ligands are overviewed. The first family concerns the so-called POMOF materials, built from the connection of mixed-valent ε-Keggin type polyoxomolybdates via N-donor or carboxylate organic molecules coordinated to transition metal ions (Zn(II), Co(II), Ni(II)) grafted at the surface of the POMs. The simulation of the hypothetical zeolitic-like POMOF structures is presented and compared to the experimental ones. The second family gathers the various molecular Mo(V), Mo(VI) and W(VI) POMs incorporating directly into their architecture bisphosphonate (BP) ligands. The potentiality of this family of hybrid POMs comes from the organic group grafted on the carbon atom which bears the two phosphonate groups. For both families, besides the structural description, synthetic trends and an overview of their properties are presented. Namely, the electrocatalytic properties (production of H(2) and reduction of BrO(3)(-)) of the ε-Keggin type polyoxomolybdates are described. The optical and biological activities of the POM-BP compounds as well as their ability to form nanosystems are also reported.

Polyoxometalates (POMs) show promising biological activities, but the mechanism of these potential therapeutic effects remains to be elucidated at a molecular level. As a step in this direction, the interaction between the Eu-containing decatungstate [EuW(10)O(36)](9-) and human serum albumin (HSA) has been studied by several techniques. Fluorescence/luminescence analysis showed the existence of a strong interaction between the POM and HSA. This interaction has key effects both on luminescence of the POM and on the behaviours of HSA. An enhancement of the POM luminescence is observed upon interaction. The presence of increasing concentrations of the POM results in the progressive quenching of the fluorescence of the single tryptophan of HSA. Circular dichroism led to the conclusion that the binding of the POM did not alter the secondary structure of HSA. Isothermal titration calorimetry revealed an enthalpy-driven binding reaction between HSA and the POM, resulting in the formation of a 1:1 complex. The present work is meaningful in finding novel solid state bio-image or fluorescence/luminescence labelling agents.

A novel heteropolyoxopalladate structural type has been discovered: the polyoxo-15-palladate(II) [Pd(0.4)Na(0.6) subsetPd(15)P(10)O(50)H(6.6)](12-) (Pd(15)) has been prepared in a one-pot self-assembly reaction and characterized by single-crystal XRD, elemental analysis, IR, TGA, (31)P NMR and electrochemistry; preliminary catalytic studies showed that Pd(15) is active as a catalyst in alcohol oxidation by dioxygen.

The new, monometal substituted silicotungstates [Mn(H(2)O)(2)(gamma-SiW(10)O(35))(2)](10-) (1), [Co(H(2)O)(2)(gamma-SiW(10)O(35))(2)](10-) (2) and [Ni(H(2)O)(2)(gamma-SiW(10)O(35))(2)](10-) (3) have been synthesized and isolated as the potassium salts K(10)[Mn(H(2)O)(2)(gamma-SiW(10)O(35))(2)] x 8.25 H(2)O (K-1), K(10)[Co(H(2)O0(2)(gamma-SiW(10)O(35))(2)] x 8.25 H(2)O (K-2) and K(10)[Ni(H(2)O)(2)(gamma-SiW(10)O(35))(2)] x 13.5 H(2)O (K-3), which have been characterized by IR spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis and cyclic voltammetry. Polyanions 1-3 are composed of two (gamma-SiW(10)O(36)) units fused on one side via two W-O-W' bridges and on the other side by an octahedrally coordinated trans-MO(4)(OH(2))(2) transition metal fragment, resulting in a structure with C(2v) point group symmetry. Anions 1-3 were synthesized by reaction of the dilacunary precursor [gamma-SiW(10)O(36)](8-) with Mn(2+), Co(2+) and Ni(2+) ions, respectively, in 1 M KCl solution at pH 4.5. The electrochemical properties of 1-3 were studied by cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential coulometry in a pH 5 buffer medium. The waves associated with the W-centers are compared with each other and with those of the parent lacunary precursor [gamma-SiW(10)O(36)](8-) in the same medium. They appear to be dominated by the acid-base properties of the intermediate reduced species. A facile merging of the waves for 3 is observed while those for 1 and 2 remain split. Controlled potential coulometry of the single wave of 3 or the combined waves of 1 and 2 is accompanied by catalysis of the hydrogen evolution reaction. No redox activity was detected for the Ni(2+) center in 3, whereas the Co(2+) center in 2 shows a one-electron redox process. The two-electron, chemically reversible process of the Mn(2+) center in 1 is accompanied by a film deposition on the electrode surface.

The tri-tungsten-vacant polyoxometalate, [alpha-AsW15(OH)4O52]13-, derived from the semi-vacant Wells-Dawson complex [alpha-AsW18(OH)4O58]7-, reacts with the late-transition metal cations, Cu(II) or Zn(II), to form sandwich-type species; the X-ray crystal structure of [alphabetabetaalpha]-(Cu(II)OH2)2(Cu(II))2(AsW15(OH2)3(OH)O52)2]12-, prepared by the acidification of [alphabetabetaalpha]-(Cu(II)OH2)2(Cu(II))2(AsW15(OH)4O52)2]18-, reveals that the missing heteroatoms are distal to the central Cu4 unit and the vertices of the vacant tetrahedron are occupied by one OH- and three OH2 groups.

The novel Ru(II)-supported heteropolytungstates [Ru(dmso)(3)(H(2)O)XW(11)O(39)](6-)(X = Ge, Si) have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, multinuclear NMR ((183)W, (13)C, (1)H, (29)Si) and IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and electrochemistry. The novel polyanion structure consists of a Ru(dmso)(3)(H(2)O) unit linked to a monolacunary [XW(11)O(39)](8-) Keggin fragment via two Ru-O-W bonds resulting in an assembly with C(1) symmetry. Polyanions 1 and 2 were synthesized by reaction of cis-Ru(dmso)(4)Cl(2) with [A-alpha-XW(9)O(34)](10-) in aqueous, acidic medium (pH 4.8). Tungsten-183 NMR of 1 leads to a spectrum with 11 peaks of equal intensity, indicating that the solid-state structure is preserved in solution. Electrochemistry studies revealed that 1 and 2 are stable in solution at least from pH 0 to 7, even in the presence of dioxygen. Their cyclic voltammetry patterns show mainly two two-electron reversible W-waves, those of the Si derivative 2 being located at slightly more negative potentials than those of the Ge derivative 1. The observed stability of 1 and 2 might be attributed to a stabilization of the Ru-center both by the strongly bound dmso ligands and the Keggin moiety. This stabilization drives the redox waves of Ru outside the accessible potential range. However, conditions were found to reveal, at least partially, the redox behavior of Ru in 1 and 2.
