The needs and concerns of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning (LGBTQ+) patients with cancer remain poorly understood. This is important as LGBTQ+ patients have an elevated risk of developing certain cancers and have poorer oncologic outcomes compared to non-LGBTQ+ patients. The lack of research may be linked to the complexity of studying the needs and concerns of this patient population. This review aimed to describe the evidence that sought to identify the needs and concerns of LGBTQ+ cancer patients. Studies were extracted using keywords such as "LGBTQ" and "Oncology." Patient participants were excluded if they did not identify as LGBTQ+ and if they did not have cancer or were not cancer survivors. Healthcare professionals were excluded if they were not oncology specific. A total of 22 studies met our inclusion criteria. LGBTQ+ cancer patients expressed concerns surrounding heteronormative assumptions made by healthcare professionals, a lack of LGBTQ±specific cancer support groups, and psychosexual concerns such as erectile dysfunction following cancer treatment. Oncology healthcare professionals lacked the knowledge and education that are required to manage this patient cohort. Further research is required to investigate the needs and concerns of LGBTQ+ cancer patients specifically in the radiation oncology setting.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) adults face unique challenges in accessing smoking cessation care due to stigma tied to their identities and smoking. While cessation apps show promise in the general population, their efficacy for SGM adults is unclear. This study utilized data from a randomized trial to compare two cessation apps, iCanQuit (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-based) and QuitGuide (US Clinical Practice Guidelines-based) among 403 SGM adults. The primary outcome was self-reported complete-case 30-day abstinence from cigarette smoking at 12 months. Mediation analyses explored whether interventions operated through acceptance of cues to smoke and app engagement. At 12 months, quit rates did not differ between arms (26% iCanQuit vs. 22% QuitGuide, OR = 1.22; 95% CI: 0.74 to 2.00, p  = .43). iCanQuit positively impacted cessation via acceptance of cues to smoke (indirect effect = 0.23; 95% CI: 0.06 to 0.50, p  < .001) and demonstrated higher engagement (no. logins, 28.4 vs. 12.1; p  < .001) and satisfaction (91% vs. 75%, OR = 4.18; 95% CI: 2.12 to 8.25, p < .001) than QuitGuide. Although quit rates did not differ between arms, acceptance of cues to smoke seemed to play a crucial role in helping SGM adults quit smoking. Future interventions should consider promoting acceptance of cues to smoke in this population.

Sexual and gender minoritized (SGM) individuals in high-stigma areas may use cannabis to cope with unmet healthcare needs and elevated stress. Adults in Oklahoma (M age  = 43.9[SD = 16.8], 54.5% female, 71.4% non-Hispanic White) completed a cross-sectional survey (August-September 2022). Logistic regression examined the association of SGM identity (SGM or non-SGM) with past-year unmet healthcare need (yes/no). Logistic and linear regressions also examined main and interactive effects of SGM identity and unmet healthcare needs on past-month medical cannabis use and number of relaxation/tension-reduction reasons for cannabis use endorsed. Analyses were unadjusted and adjusted for sociodemographic and healthcare characteristics. In adjusted analyses, SGM (vs. non-SGM) adults were more likely to report unmet healthcare needs (aOR = 2.24, 95% CI[1.47, 3.42], p  < .001) and past-month medical cannabis use (aOR = 2.15 [1.07, 4.34], p  = .033). In unadjusted analyses, SGM (versus non-SGM) adults and those with unmet healthcare needs (versus without) endorsed more relaxation/tension reduction reasons for cannabis use in separate main effects ( p s < .029), and adults with unmet healthcare needs (vs. without) were more likely to report past-month medical cannabis use (OR = 2.31 [1.86, 2.88]). SGM identity X unmet healthcare need interactions did not emerge ( p s > .05). SGM individuals in high-stigma environments may use cannabis to compensate for insufficient healthcare.

There are scant LGBT+ studies in Southeast Asia exploring mental health differences across multiple social identities. Using data from the Malaysian KAMI Survey ( n  = 718), we conducted bivariate regression analyses to investigate the association between sociodemographic backgrounds and the prevalence of depression, anxiety, non-suicidal self-injury, and suicidality. Results showed that younger participants, those questioning their sexual orientation (compared to gay or lesbian), cisgender women, trans men, and non-binary individuals (compared to cisgender men) reported significantly higher levels of mental ill-health. Our intercategorical analysis builds a foundation for future intersectional-based research in response to public health challenges for vulnerable LGBT+ groups.

This study aimed to explore the experiences, needs, and interests of queer people who are also neurodivergent, or live with a chronic illness or disability (i.e. IMMI: individuals with multi-minority identities) in Italy and the Netherlands. Five focus groups were conducted in Italy with 22 queer IMMI to identify their most relevant topics regarding and experiences with sex education. Building on the discussion topics of the focus groups, a survey in Italian and English was distributed via snowball sampling. The survey was created to explore the experiences related to sex education in the two countries. The final sample of respondents included 138 (97 Italian, 41 Dutch) queer IMMI. Results indicated that sex education received in both formal (e.g. school) and informal (e.g. family) contexts failed to include information that was sensitive and supportive of queer community's experiences. Participants reported the need to explore more topics addressing the specific needs of different identity intersections. Cross-cultural differences related to the experiences of Italian and Dutch participants were found. Overall, current sex education in Italy and the Netherlands is far from meeting the sexual health needs of queer people living with different intersections. Practical implications are discussed.

Objective: There has been an ongoing mental health crisis among sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations. This continues amidst rising population-level depression and suicide rates, especially among students in higher education. This work aims to understand changes in SGM student mental health over time. Participants: N = 483,574 responses to the Healthy Minds Study (2007C2022) were examined from 18 to 35-year-old U.S. college and university students. Methods: Linear and logistic regressions were used to examine associations between SGM identity and mental health. Mediation and structural equation modeling were used to examine potential links among risk factors. Results: On average, ∼18% of students identified as SGM, which included a 6-fold increase in SGM self-identification across this 15-year period. Depression rates increased over time; ∼12% of students reported major depression. SGM students were 3.18 times ( z = 111.16, p < .001) more likely to report depression than non-SGM students (26.85% vs. 8.53%). Disproportionate discrimination and lack of school belonging partially explained SGM disparities in depression. SGM students were twice as likely to utilize therapy ( z = 115.42, p < .001) but half as likely seek help from family ( z = 55.48, p ≤ .001). Conclusions: Academic institutions must take concrete steps to reduce barriers mental health care, combat discrimination, and bolster community belonging and interpersonal support for SGM students.

Tourism plays a key role for gay people, as it is not only a way to escape from work, but also a source of liberation and self-embracement. This role can be particularly valued in societies and political environments that are perceived as hostile toward this group. The present study examines the travel motivations and habits of gay and lesbian people, based on a questionnaire sample of 1473 respondents. The results show that for this group, but especially for women, acceptance and an open culture are of paramount importance when choosing a destination. In contrast, services and events specifically targeted at this sector, which are popular in the Western world, do not typically influence decision-making (they tend to be more attractive to women). Sex per se is not a travel motivator for this group, but is an important feature of travel for men. In addition to gender, the services and activities that an individual engages in while traveling are influenced by the degree of their sexual embracement, the place of residence and the company with which the individual travels.

This study investigates the challenges faced by LGBT Myanmar migrants in Thailand, including discrimination and abuse due to their gender identity or sexual orientation, and their coping strategies. Through qualitative interviews with 20 self-identified LGBT Myanmar migrants aged over 18 years who experienced discrimination or abuse in Thailand, the findings underscore the presence of a segment within the Myanmar LGBT migrant community in Thailand subject to discrimination and violence across diverse settings, including workplaces, public areas, and even within their homes. Additionally, the research identified healthy coping strategies like self-soothing thoughts, relaxation activities, and seeking support, contrasted with unhealthy coping strategies such as negative self-talk, rumination, and suppressing one's identity, leading to harmful behaviors and even suicidality. The experiences of severe discrimination and violence among LGBT migrants help this study advocate for policy interventions, such as extending the coverage of the Gender Equality Act to encompass LGBT migrants and implementing mental health support services as a form of secondary prevention. Given the significant contribution of LGBT migrants to various sectors of Thailand's workforce, these measures are essential. However, the existing legislation concerning gender equality in Thailand inadequately addresses the specific concerns of this demographic group.

Phenomenon. The language of medicine (i.e., biomedical discourse) represents queerness as pathological, yet it is this same discourse medical education researchers use to resist that narrative. To be truly inclusive, we must examine and disrupt the biomedical discourse we use. The purpose of this study is to disrupt oppressive biomedical discourses by examining the language and structures medical educators use in their publications about queerness in relation to physicians and physician trainees. Approach. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and ERIC in October 2021 and again in June 2023 using a combination of controlled vocabulary (select terms designated by a database to enhance and reduce ambiguity in search) and keywords to identify articles related to sexuality, gender, identity, diversity and medical professionals. Searches were limited to articles published from 2013 to the present to align with the passage of The Respect for Marriage Act. Articles were included if they focused on the experiences and paths of physicians and physician trainees identifying with or embodying queerness, were authored by individuals based in the United States, and presented empirical studies. We excluded articles only discussing attitudes of cisgender heterosexual individuals about queerness. Two authors independently screened all articles for inclusion. We then used narrative techniques to "re-story" included articles into summaries, which we analyzed with four guiding questions, using queer theory as a sensitizing concept. Finally, we sought recurrent patterns in these summaries. Findings. We identified 2206 articles of which 23 were included. We found that biomedical discourse often: characterized individuals associated with queerness as a single homogenous group rather than as individuals with a breadth of identities and experiences; implied queer vulnerability without naming-and making responsible-the causes or agents of this vulnerability; and relied minimally on actual intervention, instead speculating on potential changes without attempting to enact them. Reflections. Authors each reflect on these findings from their positionalities, discussing: disrupting essentializing categories like "LGBT"; addressing harm through allyship around queerness; editorial responsibility to disrupt structures supporting oppressive biomedical discourse; the importance of program evaluation and interventions; and shifting the focus of medical education research toward queerness using QuantCrit theory.

This study evaluated the prevalence and associated factors of depression and generalized anxiety among LGBTQ+ in five medical schools in Thailand. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) were used to assess major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), respectively, and multivariable logistic regression was employed to identify associated factors. Of 1,322 students, 412 (31.16%) identified as LGBTQ+. The prevalence for MDD and GAD among LGBTQ+ students were 32.77% and 17.23%, respectively. Significant associated factors for both MDD and GAD were a history of psychiatric illness (AOR for MDD = 2.32, p  = .020; AOR for GAD = 3.67, p  < .001), educational problems (AOR for MDD = 6.62, p  < .001; AOR for GAD = 5.12, p  < .001), and dissatisfaction with gender identity or sexual orientation (AOR for MDD = 1.92, p  = .019; AOR for GAD = 2.47, p  = .005). Additional factors associated with MDD were preclinical years (AOR = 2.30, p  = .023), financial struggles (AOR = 2.05, p  = .021), and inadequate peer support (AOR = 2.57, p  = .044). In conclusion, nearly one-third and one-fifth of Thai LGBTQ+ medical students suffer from MDD and GAD, respectively. Our findings suggest that Thai medical schools should promote LGBTQ+ inclusivity to enhance students' identity satisfaction. Peer support groups should be encouraged, especially for preclinical LGBTQ+ students who face educational and financial challenges.

This article advances scholarship on the relationship between sexuality, religion, and the law within the United States by analyzing case summaries and court opinions of the federal appellate cases decided between 1990 and 2020 that involve a religion-based claim being used to advance or defend gay and lesbian rights. Contrary to dominant public narratives that position religion uniformly in opposition to progressive sexual values, these cases show how Americans' religious beliefs and practices include diverse sexual identities. We find that the courts' reactions to such cases, however, illustrate the tension within legal discourse and hesitancy for the courts to equate religious and moral values with affirming LGBT identities, people, and rights. Our findings suggest that the courts and litigants define what religion is-and what it is not-by positioning it in relation to sexuality.

Exposure to potentially traumatic events and posttraumatic stress are known risk factors for suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB). Research suggests that sexual minorities are disproportionately exposed to traumatic events and experience greater STB than their heterosexual peers, although few studies have explored connections between these parallel disparities. Further, existing literature may implicate complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) as a potential mechanism in the trauma-suicide connection among sexual minorities. This study uses a sample from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC-III; n  = 1351) to test structural equation models for associations between trauma exposure, heterosexist discrimination, and CPTSD with suicide attempt status. We found CPTSD mediated associations between exposure to traumatic events and presence of a lifetime suicide attempt among sexual minority male and female samples. Discrimination demonstrated a synergistic effect on the association between trauma exposure and CPTSD, but, among males, CPTSD did not fully explain associations between discrimination and suicide attempts. Our findings suggest that CPTSD should be considered an important mechanism in the trauma-suicide connection for sexual minorities and may be a potentially important target for suicide prevention and that interventions should address the influence of discrimination on traumatic stress in this high-risk population.

An increasing number of studies related to LGBT inclusion on university campuses have emerged over the past few years. While a number of these studies address complex challenges encountered in Western religious universities, very little research has investigated religious universities in Eastern, Sinophone communities. This study sheds light on a mentor system at a prominent Buddhist university in Taiwan to investigate mentors' understandings of and interactions with LGBT students. Through the use of both qualitative and quantitative measures, the researchers found very few mentors were even aware of interactions with LGBT students. A thematic analysis of focus group data found the mentors' understandings and attitudes could be classified into three distinct categories ranging from very supportive to unintentionally discriminatory. Overall, it seems Confucian values, rather than Buddhist doctrines, is a far more influential factor on mentors' understandings and attitudes toward LGBT individuals. In particular, conflicts between Confucian thought and LGBT inclusive practices may arise when individuals concurrently display a strong desire to help, Confucian understandings of "family," and very little understanding of gender or sexuality. Finally, this study offers recommendations for future research and universities.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) students, LGBTQ+ staff and LGBTQ+ parents report schools can be unsafe and unwelcoming environments. Yet few studies have explored LGBTQ+ student, LGBTQ+ staff and LGBTQ+ parent perceptions of the school climate simultaneously or adopted person-centered perspectives. The present study sought to identify LGBTQ+ related strategies adopted by schools, and whether these were differentially related to perceptions of school safety and community. Data were collected in 2021 via online sampling of the current Australian school (1,937) students, (124) staff and (75) parents. Four distinct inclusion strategy profiles were identified via latent class analysis: Comprehensive Inclusion , Curriculum & Pedagogical Inclusion , Extracurricular Inclusion and Limited Inclusion . Just under half (48.2%) of schools lacked LGBTQ+ strategies, with participants from these schools reporting greater safety concerns. Our findings suggest that curriculum and pedagogical strategies are likely the most effective and should be a key focus for improving the school climate. Schools that employed LGBTQ+ affirming practices and included LGBTQ+ resources and activities, like Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs), saw improved perceptions of safety and community.

A bibliometric analysis was conducted to map out trends in publications on attitudes toward the LGBT community based on the 470 documents retrieved from the SCOPUS database for 2002-2022. The results revealed that the United States is the leading country contributing to the publications on attitudes toward the LGBT community and has a strong impact in the field (64.68%). The authorship analysis revealed that Flores, Woodford, and Worthen from the United States are the leading researchers in this field. Analysis of publication sources showed that the Journal of Homosexuality is the top publisher of findings on the LGBT community whereas the Journal of Interpersonal Violence and Sexuality and Culture have gained more traction among researchers in recent years. The analysis of the co-occurrence of author's keywords indicated that transgender is the gender group that is the most researched compared to other sexual identities. Negative attitudes such as homophobia, discrimination and being heterosexist toward one's sexuality or same-sex marriage are the current research foci. Religion and culture are seen as important predictors of attitudes about homosexuality and same-sex marriage policy. The study addresses the gaps in the literature by recommending future researchers to investigate attitudes toward other gender identities as a result of the revolution in sexual identities.

This scoping review investigates the existing literature regarding personality traits, ideology, gender roles, and attitudes toward LGBT people. The review was conducted through PubMed and Web of Science databases. After establishing inclusion- and exclusion criteria, 12 studies published between 2013 and 2023 were reviewed, three themes (personality traits, gender roles and differences, and political ideology) were identified through thematic analysis. Several of the studies reported a relation between the personality traits Openness to Experience, Agreeableness and Conscientiousness, and homo- and transnegative attitudes. In particular, lower levels of Agreeableness, high levels of Conscientiousness, and lower levels of Extraversion were related to prejudice. The Dark Triad, especially the antagonistic traits Psychopathy and Machiavellianism, had a strong association with homo- and transnegativity. Multiple studies showed a connection between negative attitudes and ideological views. Especially right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) and social dominance orientation (SDO) were strong predictors of negative attitudes toward LGBT people. The majority of the studies also reported a significant gender difference in attitudes, with men being more prone to exhibit prejudice toward LGBT people than women. There are practical implications of this review relating to interventions which may target the prevention of homo and trans-negative attitudes, promoting inclusion and integration.

Objectives: This scoping review seeks to identify what community-based support is used by older sexually and gender diverse (SGD) people, that aims to improve mental health/wellbeing., Methods: A scoping review was conducted using the Arksey and O'Malley framework. APA PsycInfo, Embase, MEDLINE, PubMed, and Scopus were searched. Key information was extracted and entered into a structured coding sheet before being summarized., Results: Seventeen studies were included (41% observational qualitative and 35% observational quantitative). The most commonly used community-based support was lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) social groups. A range of practices were reported in five studies, including in SGD affirming religious congregations and mind-body practices. Two studies reported the use of formal programmes, with one based on a group initiative. Positive outcomes included feeling connected, improved social support and mental health, and coping with illness. Five studies reported null or negative findings, including a lack of acceptance. Most studies used categories for sex and gender inaccurately, and lacked detail when describing community-based support., Conclusion: The use of community-based support by older SGD people is underexplored. More interventions designed for and by this community are needed, along with experimental research to draw conclusions on effectiveness to improve mental health or wellbeing.

Objective: Parents' rejection of their LGBTQ + young adults can have a negative impact on their young adult's psychological welfare, and on the young adult-parent relationship. Parents' ability to reflect on their child's pain and unmet needs is thought to evoke empathy and compassion, and reduce rejection. Empirical and clinical evidence suggest that parents' level of reflective functioning (RF) is impacted by their level of emotional arousal (EA). This study examined the association between parents' EA and RF within the context of attachment-based family therapy for nonaccepting parents and their LGBTQ+ young adults., Methods: 43 therapy sessions drawn from six different cases were coded for parental RF and EA, based on 30-second segments. This generated a total of 343 observations for analyses., Results: Hierarchal linear modeling revealed that parents' level of RF was a function of their concomitant EA, with moderate levels of arousal predicting the highest RF levels., Conclusion: Moderate EA may facilitate optimal parental reflective functioning. With nonaccepting parents, who typically present for treatment with high levels of maladaptive fear and shame, therapists would do well to assess their level of arousal and, when indicated, employ downregulating interventions before inviting them to reflect on their young adult's experience and needs.

This study aims to analyze cultural competence through the knowledge and attitudes regarding LGBT people held by the students of social work at two universities in southern Spain (N = 512). An ex post facto correlational study has been conducted. The Sex Education and Knowledge about Homosexuality Questionnaire, the Modern Homonegativity Scale and the Negative Attitudes toward Transgender People Scale have been applied to gather information. Data analysis was carried out using frequencies, descriptive statistics, correlations and inferential statistics. The findings show that men, religious, and politically conservative people reported higher levels of homonegative and transphobic attitudes than women, non-religious and politically more liberal people. There is also a lack of specific knowledge on the reality of and specific legislation regarding LGBT people. There is a need to continue to examine and to progress in the training of future social workers in cultural competence, incorporating the contributions of feminist theory.

Previous research on sexual identity management at work focuses on default fixed sexual categories and related strategies such as pass or reveal . What if employees experience changes in their sexual attractions and identity? The present study pioneers in incorporating the concept of sexual fluidity into organization research in order to both complement and challenge the scholarship of sexual identity management at work. It provides empirical evidence from Vietnam that is in line with queer perspective in challenging the notion of a fixed, constructed sexual identity. Through in-depth interviews with 30 female employees experiencing sexual fluidity during their work, this study aims to investigate how they manage a sexually fluid identity in the workplace. The results show that female employees first consider or choose (non)identity 1 that matches their new sexual attractions. These (non)identity choices include identity change, fluid identity, non-identity , and resisting identity . Next, strategies are utilized for managing that (non)identity at work- pass, cover, implicitly out, explicitly out, inform/educate . These strategies can be used independently or multiply (mixed/change), in which mixed strategy takes account of communication objects and situations, while change strategy relies on time. Associated individual, organizational and social factors are preliminarily mentioned, in which coworker reactions to the identity changes is a notable point (e.g., surprise, curiosity, inquiry, advice). This study also provides discussion on the construction of sexual identity as stigmatized social identity and the gap of scholarship of sexual identity management at work.

The purpose of the current research is to understand concerns about receiving care in a sample of transgender, gender nonbinary, and gender diverse (TGD) adults across the lifespan. A total of 829 participants, predominantly from the United States and Canada, aged 18-70, completed the Trans Metlife Survey on Later-Life Preparedness and Perceptions in Transgender-Identified Individuals (TMLS) section on caregiving and are included in this study. We found middle-aged adults, people of Color, and people living with a disability reported the highest level of concern for their ability to function independently because of financial resources, physical concerns, cognitive impairment, or a lack of someone to care for them. Researchers found five overarching thematic categories: (a) No concerns, (b) Anticipated discrimination, (c) Loss of control, (d) Quality of life, and (e) General concerns. Practice implications include recommendations for practitioners to develop care plans with TGD residents and clients to learn the best strategies for affirming their gender identity (e.g., clothing preferences) and to assist TGD residents and clients with the completion of advance directives to allow them to outline their end-of-life care plan, including instructions for gender affirmative care in the event of incapacitation (e.g., dementia, stroke).

There has been an increase in the literature about LGBT older adults in recent years; however, there is a need for further sociological quantitative research examining the impact of geographic region on LGBT aging. Utilizing data from a nationwide survey, this study focuses on the availability of LGBT-specific resources for LGBT aging adults living in the South. We examine the effects of community type and sociodemographics on the availability of LGBT-specific resources as well as the type of resources available. Findings reveal that in the South, community type, having a partner, household income, and education affect the LGBT-specific resources available. Of particular interest, LGBT-affirming faith organizations are identified as the resource most frequently available for LGBT aging adults in this region often referred to as the Bible Belt. Overall, this study sheds light on the LGBT-specific resources that are available to provide social support and help meet the unique needs of LGBT adults aging in the South.

The problems experienced by LGBT+ teachers and academics in Turkey were included in this study. LGBT+ teachers and academicians living in Turkey perform their professions by hiding their sexual identity to a great extent. When their identities are revealed, they are exposed to various forms of oppression and discrimination. A phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research methodologies, was utilized in this study, which deals with the obstacles experienced by LGBT+ teachers and academics in Turkey, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 LGBT+ educators using the interview form developed by the researchers. Content analysis was used for the analysis, and in light of the obtained data, possible solutions to eliminate the problems experienced by LGBT+ educators in Turkey were given.

ObjectiveCombine National Collegiate Health Assessment (NCHA) measures indicating LGBTQ + membership into a single variable in order to analyze health responses of this group as compared to their cisgender, heterosexual (cis-het) peers. Participants : Students at a liberal arts university who completed the Spring 2019 NCHA-II study ( n  = 1107). Methods : Four different NCHA sexual orientation and gender identification variables were combined, creating a new variable to examine the campus LGBTQ + student sub-sample as a single, complete group. That group was then compared to cis-het students across multiple variables. Results : LGBTQ + students reported statistically significant differences for key variables such as suicide attempts, suicidal ideation, and self-harm, as well as for stressors that impact academic success such as discrimination. Conclusions : This analysis indicates that the challenges campus LGBTQ + students face are much different than their cis-het peers. Support from campus community members is suggested to reduce negative impacts for these students.

Sexual and gender minorities often experience discrimination or stigmatization during health encounters. When patients feel stigmatized, they are more likely to delay seeking help and it affects patient cooperation and compliance, thus undermining therapeutic efficacy itself. We examined knowledge and attitude toward LGBT+ people among Hungarian ( n = 743) and foreign ( n = 130) medical students of the four Hungarian medical universities and 188 students from other faculties. Homonegativity and inadequate knowledge about sexual minority individuals are correlated with male gender, conservative political views, religiosity, religious behavior, and the absence of LGBT+ acquaintance. Medical students show more negative attitudes than students from other disciplines, although foreign medical students were more accepting than Hungarian program students. Further investigation of sexual minority-related content of the Hungarian medical education and revising the written and hidden curriculum would be desired, as well as collecting data from postgraduate students, physicians, and wide range of university faculties.

The current study explored whether affiliating with an LGBT peer crowd on a college campus differentially predicts college adjustment (including loneliness, college belongingness, academic well-being, and stress), as opposed to affiliating with a non-LGBT peer crowd. Based on a sample of 692 students from a small liberal arts college in Southern California, factor and path analyses were carried out. Results indicated that, of all the crowd affiliations, affiliating with an LGBT peer crowd was the strongest predictor of loneliness, academic well-being, and stress. However, affiliating with an LGBT peer crowd was not the strongest predictor of college belongingness. Implications and applications of these results are discussed.

Objective: This study aims to investigate sexual behaviors among gender diverse (LGBT and other sexual/gender minorities) and nongender-diverse medical students., Methods: In 2021 academic year, medical students from five Thai medical schools completed questionnaires identifying demographic data, psychosexual factors, sexual experiences, and risks., Results: Among 1,322 students, 32.1% were gender-diverse students who had lower age at first sexual intercourse and more experiences in solitary and partnered sexual activity., Conclusions: Use of hookup applications was more frequent among gay and bisexual males. Risky sexual behaviors were significantly higher among bisexual females. Gender-diverse medical students showed higher involvement in sexual activities. It is mostly assumed that the determinants of mental health among heterosexual students also apply to non-heterosexual students despite the additional stressors non-heterosexual students face. Thus, this study examined the prevalence and determinants of depression and anxiety among students based on sexual orientation. In doing so, two hundred and thirty-two (232) college students were randomly recruited. Likewise, this study utilized self-administered questionnaires, including the DASS-21. Afterward, descriptive statistics, Chi-Square, and logistic regression were used to analyze the results. This study found that non-heterosexual students had a significantly higher depression rate. Strikingly, being in a romantic relationship was a determinant of anxiety and depression among non-heterosexual students while it was protective among heterosexual students. Thus, sexual orientation mattered, wherein the determinants of depression and anxiety among college students varied based on sexual orientation.

The past year amplified inequities in the care of older adults. Milestones focused on social determinants of health (SDOH) are lacking within Geriatric fellowship training. A virtual learning collaborative GERIAtrics Fellows Learning Online And Together (GERI-A-FLOAT) was developed to connect trainees nationwide. To address gaps in education around SDOH, a needs assessment was conducted to inform a curricular thread. A voluntary, anonymous survey was distributed to fellows through a broad network. We sought to understand prior curricula trainees had that were specifically focused on SDOH and older adults. Respondents prioritized topic areas for the curriculum. Seventy-five respondents completed the survey. More than 50% of participants indicated no training on homelessness, immigration, racism, or LGBTQ+ health at any level of medical training, with more than 70% having no training in sexism or care of formerly incarcerated older adults. The most commonly taught concepts were ableism, ageism, and poverty. Respondents prioritized the topic of racism, ageism, and ableism. There is a lack of consistent SDOH curricula pertaining to older adults across all levels of training. This needs assessment is guiding a curricular thread for GERI-A-FLOAT and ideally larger milestones for fellowships. The time is now to prepare future geriatricians to serve as change agents.

Objective: First, to examine general health care attitudes and health care utilization of a University Health Service (UHS) at a large university. Second, to identify differences between LGBT and non-LBGT students. Participants: 2,943 university students were surveyed in Spring 2013; 7.8% LGBT, 67% undergraduate and 65% female. Methods: A cross-sectional mixed-methods online survey to assess health care utilization and attitudes. Results: A majority had utilized UHS and held positive attitudes in general. LGBT students were more likely to: use UHS for ongoing care, mental health, and preventive care; report concerns about utilization (e.g. confidentiality, sensitivity, and discrimination issues); report provider discomfort discussing sexuality; and hold positive attitudes toward the health care needs of LGBT students. Conclusions: University health centers have an important role in student health. Barriers to care should be removed, including perceived discrimination. Student health center staff should be trained on LGBT health issues.

This article discusses how lesbian alternative media developed in China. Under the resource-scarce condition, the lesbian print magazine as an alternative media helps align the isolated lesbian networks when other forms of social media were less prevalent. Using the first and the longest-running lesbian underground print magazine Les+ as my case study, I examine the development of the Chinese lesbian communities and their diversification through the lens of the alternative media. Based on content analysis, I find that the editors engage in three strategies to cultivate a lesbian and queer feminist discursive space: network-building, mutual empowerment, and politicization, which roughly represent three periods of the magazine's development. While these strategies help build momentum for activism, they unintentionally narrow the scope of the magazine that has contributed to the disbandment. I argue that the demise of this alternative media signifies a new ground in the diversified queer feminist movement in China.

Aside from prevalence estimates and comparisons to heterosexual and presumed cisgender (i.e., not transgender) samples, little is known about transgender and gender diverse (TGD) young adult tobacco use. This study explored reasons and contexts TGD young adults used a variety of tobacco products through 25 one-on-one semi-structured qualitative interviews in 2018. Thematic analysis yielded four themes: (1) smoking in response to anxiety, depression, or stress, (2) social smoking, (3) accepting smoking-related norms, and (4) appealing aspects of tobacco. The first three themes contained elements specifically tied to TGD identity; the final theme related to perceptions of tobacco unrelated to identity. Findings suggest reasons for smoking that are unique to TGD young adults, who frequently reported smoking cigarettes as a coping response to an amalgam of stressors. Accounting for unique stressors related to TGD identity will assist in developing culturally relevant interventions to reduce the disproportionate tobacco burden in TGD communities.

Objectives: More than 60% of people with dementia live at home, where assistance is usually provided by informal caregivers. Research on the experiences of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) caregivers is limited. This scoping review of the literature synthesizes international evidence on support provision for the population of LGBT caregivers., Methods: Eight electronic databases and Google Scholar were searched using terms including 'Dementia', 'LGBT' and 'Caregiver' for all types of articles, including empirical studies, grey literature and sources from charity/third sector/lobbying organisations. Article selection was performed by two raters. Data were analysed through deductive thematic analysis, and three themes were established a priori: Distinct experiences of LGBT caregivers; current barriers to support; strategies to overcome the current challenges., Results: Twenty articles were included. Distinct experiences of LGBT caregivers included a loss of LGBT identity, the impact of historical events, families of choice, and disclosing LGBT identities. Current barriers to support included poor representation of LGBT caregivers in support services, negative attitudes of staff and reluctance of caregivers to seek support. Strategies to overcome the current challenges included staff awareness training and kite-marking inclusion., Conclusion: Limited cultural competency of staff and a subsequent reluctance to seek help have an impact on use of support services among LGBT caregivers. Implications for practice include the development of cost-effective, feasible, and acceptable inclusiveness training for services. Implications for policy include implementation in organisations of top-down agendas supporting staff to understand sexuality and non-heteronormative relationships in older age.

Due to health disparities LGBT older adults may have more health care needs, but they are likely to have less informal sources of support. While efforts have been made to serve LGBT older adults, traditional forms of in person outreach and service may still be inaccessible to those living in rural areas, with restricted mobility, due to lack of transportation, during inclement weather, or in public health situations as the Covid-19 pandemic. We conducted focus group discussions to understand the role of virtual outreach in serving LGBT individuals' needs in their later years of life. Study participants expressed a desire for dating, community, aging in place, and affirming health care. However, their experience of internalized and institutional homophobia and ageism may act as barriers in fulfilling those needs. A dedicated virtual space has the potential to overcome these barriers by facilitating online get-togethers, support groups, dating events, having coming out resources, and exchanging information on LGBT friendly health services. Having a space to express their generativity may make such virtual services more empowering. Lack of technological access and privacy concerns may hinder the use of virtual services but can be overcome with training and education.

Evidence from industrialized countries show that discrimination and experienced and/or perceived negative encounters with healthcare workers affect frequency and type of healthcare sought by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons. In Guyana, and the wider English-speaking Caribbean region, there is a dearth of research on how healthcare workers and students perceive and interact with LGBT patients. This study investigated the attitudes and knowledge with regards to LGBT health among students at a medical school in Guyana by using quantitative, self-administered online surveys. We analyzed data using SPSS for descriptive and analytic calculations, and results showed that students held moderately prejudiced attitudes toward LGBT persons. Religiosity and heterosexual orientation were the main factors found to be associated with negative attitudes. Knowledge levels were also moderate with pronounced deficiencies in certain areas, and almost all students had not received LGBT-specific medical education, but most indicated a desire for such education.

Recent studies recommend implementing a curriculum that is inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) identities in health-related higher education programs. Inclusive health services are a means to address stigma-related adverse health outcomes in these populations. In Mexico, research has revealed that sexual and gender minority individuals experience discriminatory conditions that put them at risk for mental health problems. The present study tested the impact of a LGBT training protocol in Mexico; 17 psychology majors living in Mexico City received 12-plus hours of training on LGBT multicultural competencies. A quantitative retrospective assessment of participants' attitudes toward LGBT individuals, knowledge of LGBT issues, and willingness to work with LGBT clients, alongside qualitative data collected from a focus group, provided evidence on the impact of this training strategy. Implications for LGBT multicultural competency training in undergraduate and graduate programs in psychology are discussed herein.

This study identifies the interconnected needs and concerns of sexual and gender minority (SGM) older adults, with a particular focus on housing, healthcare, transportation, and social support. Data were gathered through seven groups with a sample of SGM-identified adults age 55 and over ( N =  50) and analyzed using thematic analysis. The participants seek affordable and inclusive housing options. They identified that access to transportation is paramount in maintaining social support and accessing healthcare. Findings underscore the need for strategies to serve the housing needs of low-income SGM-identified older adults in a nondiscriminatory way, train housing providers in culturally responsive care, meet transportation needs, and provide SGM-inclusive community-based services that reduce isolation.

Based on a geographically and socioeconomically diverse sample of 144 same-sex couples and using a dyadic approach (i.e., the Actor-Partner Interdependence Mediation Model [APIMeM] with interchangeable dyads), this study examined the association between internalized homophobia and same-sex relationship quality, and also tested the potential mediating role of intimate partner violence perpetration in this association. Results indicated that individuals' own and their partners' psychological violence perpetration mediated the negative associations from individuals' own internalized homophobia to individuals' own and their partner's relationship quality. Such findings contribute to the understanding of mechanisms underlying the harmful effects of sexual minority stressors for same-sex relationship well-being. Implications for interventions were also discussed.

This study introduces a new instrument designed to assess affirmative clinical practices with sexual and gender minority (SGM) clients, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Competency Assessment Tool (LGBT-CAT). The LGBT-CAT has two unique qualities: Its design enables adaptation to measure practice competencies with gay, lesbian, bisexual and/or transgender clients, the latter of which has no existing measures regarding practice competencies, and it uses a qualitative collection method. Participants respond to 12 open-ended prompts; responses are then quantified by one or more raters based on a scoring rubric. In this cross-sectional study, practicing social workers ( N = 357) were surveyed using the LGBT-CAT as well as measures of affirmative practices with SGM clients, knowledge, beliefs, self-efficacy skills, attitudes, and behaviors. The LGBT-CAT demonstrated good reliability, poor criterion validity, and adequate construct validity. These results support the potential integration of the LGBT-CAT into research on practice with SGM clients.
