This book offers a journey through the problems and the progress of the discipline of sociology in the UK and Europe throughout the second half of the twentieth century via an exploration of seven social settings from the life of a now eminent sociologist. It conceptualises the complex relation that exists between being and knowing, and between the personal knowledge that comes from lived experience and the essentially impersonal knowledge that any science seeks to pursue. The seven – very contrasting – settings are described in detail, together with reference to some of their leading personalities, such as David Glass, Karl Popper, Norbert Elias, Sebastian Sprott, Richard Hoggart, Noel Annan, E. M. Forster, Gösta Rehn, Chelly Halsey, Fred Hirsch and Jürgen Habermas. In each case, the author shows how his lived experience within these settings formed a substratum of his sociology and how he navigated the line between personal knowledge as a creative resource and personal knowledge as potential bias using methodological discipline. This book studies R. Buckminster Fuller's World Game and similar world games, past and present. Proposed by Fuller in 1964 and first played in colleges and universities across North America at a time of growing ecological crisis, the World Game attempted to turn data analysis, systems modelling, scenario building, computer technology, and information design to more egalitarian ends to meet human needs. It challenged players to redistribute finite planetary resources more equitably, to ‘make the world work'. This book is a study of European-language translations of Naxi ritual manuscripts, the ritual literature of a small ethnic group living in southwest China's Yunnan Province. The author discusses the translations into European languages (in English, French and German) from the late nineteenth century to the second half of the twentieth century, revealing a history of fragmentary yet interconnected translation efforts in the West. By exploring this network, he shows how translation can be understood as a metonymic “recreation” of textual worlds. As Naxi manuscripts are semi-oral texts representing an oral-formulaic tradition, their translation involves a metonymic relay of partial incorporations from manuscript/image to reading/spoken language. Therefore, the book engages in a series of textual excavations to uncover the previously occluded contemporaneous readings that would have led to the translations we can consult today, particularly in an attempt to understand how the Naxi literature came to be part of Ezra Pound's Cantos. This book explores the cultural importance of cybernetic technologies and their relationship to human experience through a critical theoretical lens. This volume critically challenges the current creative city debate from a historical perspective. In the last two decades, urban studies has been engulfed by a creative city narrative in which concepts like the creative economy, the creative class or creative industries proclaim the status of the city as the primary site of human creativity and innovation. So far, however, nobody has challenged the core premise underlying this narrative, asking why we automatically have to look at cities as being the agents of change and innovation. What processes have been at work historically before the predominance of cities in nurturing creativity and innovation was established? In order to tackle this question, the editors of this volume have collected case studies ranging from Renaissance Firenze and sixteenth-century Antwerp to early modern Naples, Amsterdam, Bologna, Paris, to industrializing Sheffield and nineteenth-and twentieth century cities covering Scandinavian port towns, Venice, and London, up to the French techno-industrial city Grenoble. Jointly, these case studies show that a creative city is not an objective or ontological reality, but rather a complex and heterogenic'assemblage,'in which material, infrastructural and spatial elements become historically entangled with power-laden discourses, narratives and imaginaries about the city and urban actor groups.
