It views money as a new phenomenon in the evolution of life that has fundamentally transformed ecosystems and human social relations.The appearance of coined money around 600 BCE coincided with the first abstract philosophies and religions. This book shows how changes in human–environmental relations have reflected changes in social relations generated by money. The detached modern view of nature mirrors the socially detached modern individual. However, the abandonment of animism has not diminished the human propensity for fetishism – the perception of artefacts such as money tokens as indexes of what they represent. By defining international communities of practice (CoPs) as domains of knowledge, this book investigates the adoption of new international practices via collective learning—that is, the redefinition of what is acceptable and feasible. Explaining how inclusive practices at the World Bank became institutionalized, it shows that while changes in presidents can influence practices of international organizations, shifts in collective thinking are even more important to understand world ordering.Collective learning happens at the boundaries between CoPs when practitioners interact with others inside or outside the formal walls of an organization—through processes of boundary encounters, boundary brokering, and the use of epistemic boundary objects. Since the 1980s, despite stability in their technocratic political rationality, World Bank employees arranged in CoPs collectively learned that program ownership and consultation in policymaking were more effective than top-down practices. However, while learning that more democratic practices rendered their projects and policies more effective, Bank employees did not fully challenge colonial epistemic hierarchies in North–South relations. This CoP framework draws from, combines, and extends various strands of cutting-edge IR scholarship (i.e., practice-oriented and constructivist IR), management theory (communities of practice), organizational studies (narratives and day-to-day procedures), as well as development and critical studies (feminist and decoloniality approaches).This book will be of interest not only to scholars and students interested in IR theory, international organizations, development practices, and social theory but also to development workers and anyone interested in global governance.

The Rise of Nationalist Populism explores the intersection between populism and nationalism, conducted through the discursive analysis of three Populist Radical Right parties that have gained prominence during the 2010s: Rassemblement National (France), Lega (Italy) and Vox (Spain).Due to its rise in Europe, the United States, and further afield, there is a growing interest in right-wing populism, an exclusionary and illiberal form of populism that has been able to attain success in several countries. This book contributes to the analysis of how populism, understood as a way of constructing the political, is shaped by the ideologies that permeate it. It examines how a certain form of nationalism is shaped by populist dynamics, that is by a certain form of identity-building. The book analyses the intersection between nationalism and populism in right-wing populist parties by using a discourse analysis methodology based on Ernesto Laclau's works, thus conducting an examination similar to the ones presented by the Essex School of Discourse Analysis. This book explores the path that led to the Treaty of Rapallo (1920) between Italy and the new Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, in the aftermath of the First World War, when the territories of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire were allotted to new and existing states, with regard as far as possible to the nationalities of the people living in the various territories in addition to the future of Montenegro and Albania.Based on vast archival documentation and published sources, the contributors to this book discuss the nature of the disputes which arose in the Adriatic area, often as the result of the inhabitants of the different territories being of several nationalities, and examine how the disputes were concluded. The book charts the disappointments of both Italians and Yugoslavs, the Italians disappointed that the terms of the Treaty of London of 1915, which promised Dalmatia to Italy in return for Italy entering the war against the Austro-Hungarian Empire, were not fulfilled. The Yugoslavs were disappointed loosing territories containing large Yugoslav populations. This book analyses aspects of the material culture of early modern Greece from an object-based perspective, using surviving artefacts from that period as primary sources.A printed book, a wine jug, an ecclesiastical embroidery, and a pocket watch are used as entry points to examine the consumer practices of the emerging Greek bourgeoisie under Ottoman rule in the long eighteenth century. The acquisition and usage of novel products – especially imported ones – by Greeks was connected to personal expression, identity building, and self-determination in the context of the Enlightenment. The enjoyment of innovative artefacts opened new horizons to them and facilitated their individual and collective empowerment. The originality of the book lies in its eclectic and interdisciplinary approach towards early modern Greek material culture, an under-researched topic. Unilateral or plurilateral restrictive measures, commonly referred to as “sanctions”, by States or regional organizations have been acquiring an enormous practical importance in the last decades, leading also to the institution of a European Union's sanctioning mechanism of its own. In addition to that, the war in Ukraine, triggered by the Russian aggression, has given them an unprecedented visibility, including in the mainstream media. The matter nevertheless remains particularly complex, given its diverse implications from a legal as well as from an economic-financial point of view, and not least in a political perspective. This book follows up the workshop that was held at the University of Florence on 9-10 December 2021 and collects original contributions from promising or acclaimed, leading experts on sanctions. Each part of the book is devoted to three main themes: legality and legitimacy; extraterritorial implications; and effectiveness. These parts consist of a “dialogue” between experts from different fields. The book explores the legal basis of sanctions and how this impacts their legitimacy and the perception of their legitimacy. It considers the complex implications of the extraterritorial effects that sanctions often produce or are even intended to produce, as well as how effective they are in relation to different underlying aims. It is hardly possible to tackle such key questions through a unique disciplinary lens. This book investigates the practice of Islamic family law among Muslim women in a minority context.Muslims living as a minority often practise Islamic family law in a private capacity, following customary laws from their countries of origin. The invocation and operation of law in this context is, however, understudied and little understood. In response, this book provides an empirical study of the practice of Islamic family law in Britain. The book analyses the lived experiences of Muslim women and their interactions with the processes of marriage and divorce. Focusing centrally on Muslim women's agency and legal consciousness, the book is based on in-depth interviews with Muslim women and with relevant professionals, as well as observations of Sharia Council hearings and the analysis of related documentation. Youth Digital Health and Online Platforms focuses on young people's use of the digital platform Reddit for health. Drawing upon dialogism theory, the book explores how young people produce a youth-led discourse of youth digital health, different from the adult-led framing represented in youth digital health research, policy, and service delivery.Peer-led discussions online remain one of the controversial forms of youth digital health, associated with negative peer influence or casual ‘teenage talk'. This book argues that online peer-led dialogues support young people's agency in health and that young people can benefit from dealing with health issues with peers. The work is based on the digital ethnography of teenagers'subreddits on Reddit and utilises a theoretical framework of dialogism, a linguistic-based theory originated by an early 20th-century Russian philosopher, Mikhail Bakhtin. The book introduces the concept of dialogical youth-led youth digital health discourse formed in the peer-led space of Reddit. This youth-led discourse celebrates equality and diversity amongst people, meanings, and opinions. It is constructed around three relational elements: socio-material affordances, creative practices, and a plurality of youth voices.
