This article presents the results of a research that aimed at identifying which organizational commitment component predominates among public service employees of generation Y in Brazilian federal public organizations located in Rio de Janeiro city. Some topics were discussed within literature review: organizational commitment; generation Y; organizational commitment in Brazilian public organizations; and the model used in this research (The Three Components of Organizational Commitment model of Meyer and Allen - affective, instrumental and normative). The methodological approach was a descriptive quantitative survey. The results showed that the predominant component was the affective one, suggesting the generation Y servants have a strong emotional connection, a sense of loyalty and identification with the organizations they work for. The instrumental component was ranked as the second and the normative as the third. The results can support public managers to create human resource development strategies and policies consistent with the characteristics and expectations of the generation Y employees in order foster commitment with organizational goals and objectives.
