Significant benefits can be achieved when they are combined to form a collaborative service evaluation, particularly when such collaboration involves different clinical professions. This article uses the NHS 111 Wales service to explore a simple example of collaborative service evaluation and to discuss the benefits and challenges identified. While the tabletop exercises described were expected to focus solely on compliance data and the reasons for non-compliance, broader learning was identified for all parties involved. It became clear that there was a lack of shared understanding of each service, and that there were opportunities for education and opportunities to develop new national pathways. It is hoped that readers may be able to compare, learn and possibly replicate the collaborative approach used in their practice settings to achieve similar outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Statutory guidance for promoting the health and wellbeing of looked after children stipulates that children and young people in the care system should receive health assessments on entry to care, and thereafter at six-monthly intervals for children aged under five and annually for those aged five to 18 years. Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust works in partnership with the local authority and clinical commissioners to meet the needs of local looked after children. It was found that many of these children and young people were refusing to have health assessments. This longitudinal study identified blocks to engagement, and explored alternative strategies to build compliance and participation. Aims To explore nurse anaesthetists' experiences and actions when administering and caring for children requiring anaesthesia. Method A qualitative design employing critical incident technique was used. Interviews were carried out with a purposeful sample of nurse anaesthetists (n=32). The nurse anaesthetists' experiences were grouped into two main areas: organisation focused and interrelational focused. Actions were grouped into two main areas: optimising the situation and creating interpersonal interaction. Findings The categories and subcategories of the nurses' experiences appeared to influence the outcome for the child. The nurse anaesthetists' first priority was to create an optimal environment and increase sensitivity in their interactions with the child.
