Abstract

We show that the mitochondrial DNA mutation rate in D. melanogaster is 10X higher than the nuclear mutation rate, and that major-strand G-->A hypermutablity explains the extremely biased base composition of the mitochondrial genome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
