The article presents a definition of the term APOLLONIAN-DIONYSIAN. An antinomy prefigured in certain writings of Ger. romanticism, esp. by Schlegel, Hölderlin, Schelling, and others, but made prominent and given broader cultural meaning (in the sense of conflicting world views and artistic drives) by Friedrich Nietzsche in The Birth of Tragedy out of the Spirit of Music (1871). Nietzsche describes the A. world as that of dreams, poetic inspiration, beautiful illusion, form, individuality, light, and human measurement, and altogether as a joyous experience instilling the desire for continual repetition.
