From the 1960's onwards, but particularly during the 1980's, the Mexican vegetable agribusiness has shown a very dynamic behavior, in good measure thanks to the comparative advantages this country offers vis-à-vis vegetable sales in the USA market during the winter season. Many Mexican regions have joined at different times this vegetable harvesting trend and, in turn, its agro-industrial production has had a significant bearing in changing the labor market in rural zones. This is exactly what has been happening in Sayula, Jalisco, where the production of tomato, to begin with, and then of other vegetables (particularly broccoli) for the pre-frozen food agribusiness, has developed considerably from the mid 1980's onwards. Among those significant changes, included within the framework of competitive strategies adopted by the companies, we must mention the ethnic, spatial, and gender segmentation of the labor market.
