Objective The cognitive theory of suicide postulates that hopelessness is an essential precondition for suicidal ideation in patients with depressive disorder . However, the explanatory power and predictive value of hopelessness for suicidal ideation remain uncertain. Methods From 1997 to 2007, patients with depressive disorder who were cohorts from the Vantaa Depression Studies (n = 406) completed the Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Perceived Social Support Scale-Revised (PSSS-R), and Eysenck Personality Inventory-Q (EPI-Q) at baseline, 6 and 18 months, and 5 years. We conducted a mixed-effects generalized linear regression and clustered receiver-operating characteristics analysis to test how well BDI and BHS predict severe suicidal ideation within and between patients. Results BHS predicted clinically significant suicidal ideation (odds ratio [OR] = 2.8), explaining 13.1% of between-patient and and 3.5% of within-patient variance of SSI. Adjusting for the fixed effect of BDI removed a substantial part of the effect of BHS on SSI (adjusted OR = 1.38, P = .018). BAI moderated the effect of BHS on SSI, whereas EPI-Q and PSSS-R did not. BDI detected suicidal ideation more accurately (area under the receiver-operating characteristics curve [AUC] = 0.846) than BHS (AUC = 0.754). Conclusions In patients with depressive disorder, hopelessness explains suicidal ideation, but largely because it covaries with depressive symptoms. The role of hopelessness as a central determinant of suicidal ideation in depression may have been overestimated. Symptoms of anxiety moderate the association between hopelessness and suicidal ideation. Severity of depressive symptoms may predict suicidal ideation more accurately than hopelessness.

OBJECTIVE To examine whether bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder represent 2 different disorders or alternative manifestations of the same disorder. METHODS The data were collected between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2005. The analyses were conducted between December 21 and December 27, 2010. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were performed on 25 symptoms assessing depression, mania, and borderline personality disorder from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, a large nationally representative sample of the US adult population (N = 34,653). DSM-IV criteria were used for diagnosis of bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. RESULTS A 3-factor solution provided an excellent fit in both the EFA (root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA] = 0.017, comparative fix index [CFI] = 0.997) and the CFA (RMSEA = 0.024, CFI = 0.993). Factor 1 (Borderline Personality Disorder) loaded on all 9 borderline personality disorder symptoms, factor 2 (Depression) loaded on 8 symptoms of depression, and factor 3 (Mania) loaded on 7 symptoms of mania plus the psychomotor agitation item of the depression section. The correlations between the Borderline Personality Disorder and Depression factors (r = 0.328) and between the Borderline Personality Disorder and Mania factors (r = 0.394) were lower than the correlation between Depression and Mania factors (r = 0.538). CONCLUSIONS A model with 3 positively correlated factors provided an excellent fit for the latent structure of borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder symptoms. The pattern of pairwise correlations between the 3 factors is consistent with the clinical presentation of 2 syndromes (depression and mania) that can be characterized as a unitary psychiatric entity (bipolar disorder) and a third syndrome (borderline personality disorder) that is often comorbid with bipolar disorder. The findings converge in suggesting that bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder are overlapping but different pathologies. These findings may serve to inform ongoing efforts to refine the existing psychiatric nosology and to suggest new avenues for etiologic and treatment research.

OBJECTIVE Personality features may indicate risk for both mood disorders and suicidal acts. How dimensions of temperament and character predispose to suicide attempts remains unclear. METHOD Patients (n = 597) from 3 prospective cohort studies (Vantaa Depression Study [VDS], Jorvi Bipolar Study [JoBS], and Vantaa Primary Care Depression Study [PC-VDS]) were interviewed at baseline, at 18 months, and, in VDS and PC-VDS, at 5 years (1997-2003). Personality was measured with the Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised (TCI-R), and follow-up time spent in major depressive episodes (MDEs) as well as lifetime (total) and prospectively ascertained suicide attempts during the follow-up were documented. RESULTS Overall, 219 patients had 718 lifetime suicide attempts; 88 patients had 242 suicide attempts during the prospective follow-up. The numbers of both the total and prospective suicide attempts were associated with low self-directedness (β = -0.266, P = .004, and β = -0.294, P < .001, respectively) and high self-transcendence (β = 0.287, P = .002, and β = 0.233, P = .002, respectively). Total suicide attempts were linked to high novelty seeking (β = 0.195, P = .05). Prospective, but not total, suicide attempts were associated with high harm avoidance (β = 0.322, P < .001, and β = 0.184, P = .062, respectively) and low reward dependence (β = -0.274, P < .001, and β = -0.134, P = .196, respectively), cooperativeness (β = -0.181, P = .005, and β = -0.096, P = .326, respectively), and novelty seeking (β = -0.137, P = .047). No association remained significant when only prospective suicide attempts during MDEs were included. After adjustment was made for total time spent in MDEs, only high persistence predicted suicide attempts (β = 0.190, P < .05). Formal mediation analyses of harm avoidance and self-directedness on prospectively ascertained suicide attempts indicated significant mediated effect through time at risk in MDEs, but no significant direct effect. CONCLUSIONS Among mood disorder patients, suicide attempt risk is associated with temperament and character dimensions. However, their influence on predisposition to suicide attempts is likely to be mainly indirect, mediated by more time spent in depressive episodes.

Identifying the depression symptoms most closely associated with suicidal thoughts and which medications provide the fastest depression relief may help suicide prevention.Post hoc analysis of data from a randomized, double-blind, 8-week clinical trial of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor paroxetine controlled release (n = 36) versus the norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor bupropion extended release (n = 38) was conducted in patients with DSM-IV major depressive disorder and past suicide attempt or current suicidal thoughts. Treatment effects on Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and Beck Depression Inventory symptom clusters were compared. We hypothesized that paroxetine would demonstrate a superior effect on nonsuicidal, affective/cognitive depression symptom clusters that our prior work found to be associated with suicidal thoughts and attempts. Data were collected from February 2005 to January 2010.There was a treatment main effect on HDRS psychic depression (depressed mood, guilt, retardation, helpless, hopeless, worthless) (estimate = -2.2; 95% CI, -3.2 to -1.1; t67.16 = -4.01; P.001), one of the clusters most strongly correlated to suicidal ideation. The net drug effect demonstrated that mean psychic depression score was 2.2 points lower after 1 week of paroxetine compared to bupropion treatment. The significance level of this effect was P.001 at weeks 1 and 2, P = .012 at week 3 and P = .051 at week 4. Results for other depression scale factors were nonsignificant (P.05).The results require replication but suggest a pathway by which selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor treatment may exert a stronger effect compared with norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor treatment on reduction of suicidal thoughts during initial weeks of pharmacotherapy in these higher risk patients.ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT00429169.

Background Although lower levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are found in major depressive disorder, less is known about PUFA status and anxiety disorders. Method Medication-free participants with DSM-IV-defined major depressive disorder (MDD), with (n = 18) and without (n = 41) comorbid DSM-IV anxiety disorders, and healthy volunteers (n = 62) were recruited from October 2006 to May 2010 for mood disorder studies at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Participants were 18-73 years of age (mean age, 35.8 ± 12.6 years). Depression and anxiety severity was assessed using depression and anxiety subscales from the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. Plasma PUFAs eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3) and the ratio of arachidonic acid (AA; 22:4n-6) to EPA (AA:EPA) were quantified. This secondary analysis employed analysis of variance with a priori planned contrasts to test for diagnostic group differences in log-transformed PUFA levels (logDHA, logEPA, and logAA:EPA). Results Plasma levels of logDHA (F(2,118) = 4.923, P = .009), logEPA (F(2,118) = 6.442, P = .002), and logAA:EPA (F(2,118) = 3.806, P = .025) differed across groups. Participants with MDD had lower logDHA (t(118) = 2.324, P = .022) and logEPA (t(118) = 3.175, P = .002) levels and higher logAA:EPA levels (t(118) = -2.099, P = .038) compared with healthy volunteers. Lower logDHA (t(118) = 2.692, P = .008) and logEPA (t(118) = 2.524, P = .013) levels and higher logAA:EPA levels (t(118) = -2.322, P = .022) distinguished anxious from nonanxious MDD. Depression severity was not associated with PUFA plasma levels; however, anxiety severity across the entire sample correlated negatively with logDHA (r(p) = -0.22, P = .015) and logEPA (r(p) = -0.25, P = .005) levels and positively with logAA:EPA levels (r(p) = 0.18, P = .043). Conclusions The presence and severity of comorbid anxiety were associated with the lowest EPA and DHA levels. Further studies are needed to elucidate whether omega-3 PUFA supplementation may preferentially alleviate MDD with more severe anxiety.

Nonsuicidal self-injury is the direct, deliberate infliction of pain and tissue damage by an individual on his or her own body in the absence of suicidal intent, psychosis, mental retardation, or developmental delay.1 A wide variety of self-damaging acts may be classified as nonsuicidal self-injury, the most common of which include cutting or burning one’s own skin.1 Nonsuicidal self-injury is a significant and common public health problem in adolescents, with community studies reporting a prevalence of nonsuicidal self-injury at around 20%2,3 and studies of adolescent psychiatric inpatients reporting rates as high as 82%.4 A number of factors have shown consistent relationships to nonsuicidal self-injury. These include mood disorders,5,6 increased severity of depressive symptoms,5,7 and additional clinical characteristics like impulsivity.8 Family features, particularly a history of child maltreatment, have also been found to be related to nonsuicidal self-injury.9,10 These characteristics may be linked by a common thread of emotional dysregulation, which is frequently observed among individuals with nonsuicidal self-injury.11,12 In fact, the most commonly cited function of nonsuicidal self-injury is to achieve emotional regulation in the face of negative affect.4 Despite many common risk factors, the nature of the relationship between nonsuicidal self-injury and suicide attempts is an ongoing area of controversy. Some suggest that any act of self-injury should be considered part of a spectrum of suicidal behavior,13 while others differentiate nonsuicidal self-injury and suicide attempt based on whether there is intent to die or if the behavior is intended to serve a different function. The latter view is supported by the disparate rates of co-occurrence of nonsuicidal self-injury and suicide attempt, particularly in community samples, in which fewer than 1 in 5 of those who engaged in nonsuicidal self-injury also have a history of a suicide attempt.14,15 In contrast, the behaviors are much more likely to co-occur in clinically referred samples.16,17 This finding suggests that nonsuicidal self-injury and suicide attempt may be unique entities that share some common correlates and risk factors. Greater likelihood and increased severity of these overlapping features would therefore lead to an amplified rate of co-occurrence, as is seen in the psychiatric inpatient setting. Examination of youths who are not themselves clinically referred but who are at risk for the development of a mood disorder could help to clarify the extent to which suicide attempt and nonsuicidal self-injury are distinct entities. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the correlates of a history of nonsuicidal self-injury in a sample of individuals who are the offspring of mood-disordered parents. Approximately one-half of the parents had a history of suicide attempt, 20% had a history of nonsuicidal self-injury, and 18% had a history of both. In previous reports, correlates and predictors of suicide attempt in these offspring have been identified. These include parental history of suicide attempt and sexual abuse, as well as offspring sexual abuse and increased impulsive aggression and self-reported depressive symptoms.18,19 In the present study, characteristics of offspring and at least 1 of their parents were examined with respect to the occurrence of nonsuicidal self-injury in the offspring. We hypothesized that the presence and severity of mood disorder would predispose to nonsuicidal self-injury, as would impulsivity and history of abuse. Given prior work with this sample, it was also predicted that family discord and lack of cohesion would predispose to nonsuicidal self-injury. Because we are positing that nonsuicidal self-injury and suicidal behavior are distinct entities, we also hypothesized that a parental history of nonsuicidal self-injury but not suicide attempt would be related to nonsuicidal self-injury in offspring.18,19

Patients with bipolar disorder are prone to suicidal behavior, yet possible protective mechanisms are rarely studied. We investigated a possible protective role for moral or religious objections to suicide against suicidal ideation and attempts in depressed bipolar patients.A retrospective case control study of 149 depressed bipolar patients (DSM-III-R criteria) in a tertiary care university research clinic was conducted. Patients who reported religious affiliation were compared with 51 patients without religious affiliation in terms of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and history of suicidal behavior. The primary outcome measure was the moral or religious objections to suicide subscale of the Reasons for Living Inventory (RFLI).Religiously affiliated patients had more children and more family-oriented social networks than nonaffiliated patients. As for clinical variables, religiously affiliated patients had fewer past suicide attempts, had fewer suicides in first-degree relatives, and were older at the time of first suicide attempt than unaffiliated patients. Furthermore, patients with religious affiliation had comparatively higher scores on the moral or religious objections to suicide subscale of the RFLI, lower lifetime aggression, and less comorbid alcohol and substance abuse and childhood abuse experience. After controlling for confounders, higher aggression scores (P = .001) and lower score on the moral or religious objections to suicide subscale of the RFLI (P.001) were significantly associated with suicidal behavior in depressed bipolar patients. Moral or religious objections to suicide mediated the effects of religious affiliation on suicidal behavior in this sample.Higher score on the moral or religious objections to suicide subscale of the RFLI is associated with fewer suicidal acts in depressed bipolar patients. The strength of this association was comparable to that of aggression scores and suicidal behavior, and had an independent effect. A possible protective role of moral or religious objections to suicide deserves consideration in the assessment and treatment of suicidality in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar disorder is associated with a high rate of suicide attempt, and alcohol use disorders have also been associated with elevated risk for suicidal behavior. Whether risk for suicidal behavior is elevated when these conditions are comorbid has not been addressed in epidemiologic studies. METHOD: 1,643 individuals with a DSM-IV lifetime diagnosis of bipolar disorder were identified from 43,093 general-population respondents who were interviewed in the 2001-2002 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions. Assessments were made using the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Alcohol Use Disorder and Associated Disabilities Interview Schedule-DSM-IV Version (AUDADIS-IV). Lifetime prevalence of reported history of suicide attempt and suicidal thoughts among bipolar disorder respondents with and without DSM-IV lifetime alcohol use disorders (abuse or dependence) was assessed using chi2 and adjusted odds ratios with confidence intervals. Logistic regression was used to test the relevance of other comorbid clinical conditions to suicide risk in bipolar respondents with and without comorbid alcohol use disorders. RESULTS: More than half of the respondents (54%) who met criteria for bipolar disorder also reported alcohol use disorder. Bipolar individuals with comorbid alcohol use disorder were at greater risk for suicide attempt than those individuals without alcohol use disorder (adjusted odds ratio=2.25; 95% CI, 1.61-3.14) and were more likely to have comorbid nicotine dependence and drug use disorders. Nicotine dependence and drug use disorders did not increase risk for suicidal behavior among those with bipolar disorder, nor did they confer additional risk among bipolar respondents who also reported alcohol use disorder. Despite greater psychopathological burden, individuals with comorbid bipolar disorder and alcohol use disorder did not receive more treatment or more intensive treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Suicidal behavior is more likely to occur in bipolar respondents who also suffer from alcohol use disorder. OBJECTIVE: To address issues concerning potential treatment-emergent "suicidality," a consensus conference was convened March 23-24, 2009. PARTICIPANTS: This gathering of participants from academia, government, and industry brought together experts in suicide prevention, clinical trial design, psychometrics, pharmacoepidemiology, and genetics, as well as research psychiatrists involved in studies in studies of psychiatric disorders associated with elevated suicide risk across the life cycle. The process involved reviews of the relevant literature, and a series of 6 breakout sessions focused on specific questions of interest. EVIDENCE: Each of the participants at the meeting received references relevant to the formal presentations (as well as the slides for the presentations) for their review prior to the meeting. In addition, the assessment instruments of suicidal ideation/behavior were reviewed in relationship to standard measures of validity, reliability, and clinical utility, and these findings were discussed at length in relevant breakout groups, in the final plenary session, and in the preparation of the article. Consensus and dissenting views were noted. CONSENSUS PROCESS: Discussion and questions followed each formal presentation during the plenary sessions. Approximately 6 questions per breakout group were prepared in advance by members of the Steering Committee and each breakout group chair. Consensus in the breakout groups was achieved by nominal group process. Consensus recommendations and any dissent were reviewed for each breakout group at the final plenary session. All plenary sessions were recorded and transcribed by a court stenographer. Following the transcript, with input by each of the authors, the final paper went through 14 drafts. The output of the meeting was organized into this brief report and the accompanying full article from which it is distilled. The full article was developed by the authors with feedback from all participants at the meeting and represents a consensus view. Any areas of disagreement at the conference have been noted in the text. CONCLUSIONS: The term suicidality is not as clinically useful as more specific terminology (ideation, behavior, attempts, and suicide). Most participants applauded the FDA's encouragement of standard definitions and definable expectations for investigators and industry sponsors. Further research of available assessment instruments is needed to verify their utility, reliability, and validity in identifying suicide-associated treatment-emergent adverse effects and/or a signal of efficacy in suicide prevention trials. The FDA needs to systematically monitor postmarketing events by encouraging the development of a validated instrument for postmarketing surveillance of suicidal ideation, behavior, and risk. Over time, the FDA, industry, and clinical researchers should evaluate the impact of the requirement that all central nervous system clinical drug trials must include a Columbia Classification Algorithm of Suicide Assessment (C-CASA)-compatible screening instrument for assessing and documenting the occurrence of treatment-emergent suicidal ideation and behavior. OBJECTIVE: This case-control study used both healthy blood donors and psychiatric inpatients as controls and controlled for gender, age, low body mass index, alcohol and nicotine use, and aggressive and impulsive behaviors to examine the association between low serum cholesterol levels and suicide attempts. METHOD: At a Spanish general hospital, the recruitment included 417 patients with suicide attempt history (138 men and 279 women), 155 psychiatric inpatient controls without suicide history (68 men and 87 women), and 358 healthy controls (220 men and 138 women). All participants were aged 18 years or older. To study the association between low serum cholesterol levels (fasting < 160 mg/dL) and suicide attempts, odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated in univariate analyses. Logistic regression models adjusted ORs for confounding variables in male, female, and total samples. The study was conducted from January 1996 to December 1997. RESULTS: The ORs in the total sample (for psychiatric and healthy controls respectively) were 1.8 (95% CI = 1.2 to 2.9, p = .007) and 1.9 (95% CI = 1.4 to 2.6, p < .001) for the univariate analyses, and 1.6 (95% CI = 0.95 to 2.6, p = .08) and 1.6 (95% CI = 1.0 to 2.4, p = .04) after variable adjustment. In women, the adjusted OR was 1.8 (95% CI = 0.90 to 3.5, p = .09) for psychiatric controls. In men, the adjusted OR was 2.0 (95% CI = 0.99 to 4.1, p = .05) for healthy controls. All ORs were in the hypothesized direction but some subsamples appeared too small to reach significance. CONCLUSION: This study, somewhat limited by the small sample size, suggests that low cholesterol may be associated with suicide attempts. Objective Determining risk for a suicide attempt in psychiatric patients requires assessment of multiple risk factors and knowledge of their relative importance. Classification and regression tree (CART) analysis generates decision trees that select the variables that perform best in identifying the group of interest and model clinical decision making. Hypothetical decision trees to identify recent and remote suicide attempters, weighted to increase sensitivity, were generated for psychiatric patients using correlates of past suicidal behavior. Method Correlates of past suicide attempts were identified in 408 patients with mood, schizophrenia spectrum, or personality disorders (DSM-IV). Correlated variables were entered into recursive partitioning statistical models to generate equally weighted and unequally weighted hypothetical decision trees for distinguishing recent ( 250 days prior to study) suicide attempters from nonattempters. The study was conducted from December 1989 to November 1998. Results In equally weighted trees, a recent past suicide attempt was best predicted by current suicidal ideation (sensitivity = 56%, specificity = 91%, positive predictive value = 69%), and no adequate model was found for remote attempts. In unequally weighted models, recent attempters were identified by suicidal ideation and comorbid borderline personality disorder (sensitivity = 73%, specificity = 80%, positive predictive value = 58%). Remote attempters were identified by lifetime aggression and current subjective depression (sensitivity = 89%, specificity = 36%, positive predictive value = 44%). Conclusion Current suicidal ideation is the best indicator of a recent suicide attempt in psychiatric patients. Indicators of a remote attempt are aggressive traits and current depression. Weighted decision trees can improve sensitivity and miss fewer attempters but with a cost in specificity.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with cluster B personality disorder (CBPD) are particularly prone to suicidal behavior, yet possible protective mechanisms are not often studied. The present study investigated a possible protective role of moral objections to suicide (MOS) against suicidal behavior in patients with CBPD and current depression. The effect of MOS was then examined in relation to other mechanisms affecting suicide risk including trait aggressivity and the presence of effective coping strategies. METHOD: 147 depressed patients with comorbid CBPD (DSM-III-R) were compared with 210 depressed patients without CBPD in terms of their history of suicide attempts and clinical and demographic characteristics. The relationship of MOS to suicide attempt was examined by logistic regression controlling for demographic and clinical differences between the groups as well as presence of comorbid CBPD. Data were collected from 1990 to 2003. RESULTS: Subjects with comorbid CBPD had fewer MOS and reported more previous suicide attempts. In logistic regression, fewer MOS/religious beliefs, lower coping potential, and higher aggression level were associated with suicide attempt. A CBPD diagnosis did not affect the relationship between MOS and suicide attempts. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that the presence of MOS/religious beliefs may have a protective effect against suicidal behavior in depressed patients with comorbid CBPD and may be a target for therapeutic intervention. Background The role of antidepressants in suicide prevention is a major public health question. An association was hypothesized between the increase in the use of non-tricyclic antidepressant medications in the United States and the decline in the suicide rate during the years 1985-1999. Method The relationships between the suicide, antidepressant prescription, unemployment, and alcoholic beverage consumption rates were studied using generalized linear models. Suicide rates by antidepressant overdose were compared in selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). Results From 1985 to 1999, the suicide rate fell 13.5%, with a greater decline among women, and antidepressant prescription rates increased over 4-fold, with the increase mostly due to SSRIs. Prescription rates for SSRIs and other second-generation antidepressants were both inversely associated with suicide rates (p = .03 and p = .02, respectively). In a multivariable analysis adjusting for unemployment and alcoholic beverage consumption rates, SSRI antidepressant prescription rates remained inversely associated with the national suicide rate (p = .03). Females received twice as many antidepressant prescriptions compared with males. The commonest prescription indication was mood disorders, the condition most often associated with suicide. SSRIs were associated with a lower risk of suicide by antidepressant overdose compared with TCAs. Conclusion The decline in the national suicide rate (1985-1999) appears to be associated with greater use of non-tricyclic antidepressants. Treatment of a greater proportion of mood disorders with SSRIs and other second-generation non-tricyclic antidepressants may further reduce the suicide rate. Controlled studies of the antisuicidal properties of antidepressants are needed in high-risk depressed patient populations.

In clinical settings, one often thinks of suicidal ideation and behavior as following a somewhat linear trajectory. It stands to reason, the clinician often surmises, that patients start with suicidal ideation, progress to making a plan, and then implement the plan for suicide. Even with the understanding that people may go from one step to the next at different rates, it seems unfathomable that a patient would take such drastic action as to attempt suicide without having made some sort of plan or, at the very least, given the thought serious, deliberate consideration. This issue of Focus on Suicide brings us new data about risk assessment, with 2 articles examining the utility of rating scales for assessment of suicidal behavior. Youngstrom et al conduct a careful comparison of 3 suicide rating scales: the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS), the Suicide Tracking Scale (STS), and the Sheehan Suicidality Tracking Scale (S-STS). While the scales did comparably in 2 broad categories, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, the study suggests that some subtypes of suicidal behavior/ideation are not captured as well by the S-STS.
