Der 90. Geburtstag im Jahr 2019 hat Michael Ende (1929-1995) erneut in die Öffentlichkeit gerückt und auch die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit seinem literarischen Schaffen beflügelt. In dessen Zentrum steht die Unendliche Geschichte (1979) mit ihrer Idee einer Rettung des mythologischen Menschheitserbes. Aufmerksamkeit erlangen auch Endes Erzählbände allein für Erwachsene mit ihrer Nähe zu Franz Kafka und Jorge Luis Borges. Beachtung findet ebenfalls das musikdramatische Schaffen und Endes Werkgemeinschaft mit dem Komponisten Wilfried Hiller. Dass Ende zu den weltweit rezipierten deutschen Schriftstellern gehört, belegen elf Länderartikel, die einen Bogen von Japan über die arabische Welt und Europa bis nach Brasilien schlagen.

Die Grundlage für den vorliegenden Band bilden literaturwissenschaftliche Beiträge, die im Rahmen der Tagung «Dialog der Künste: Literatur und Musik» im März 2017 an der Universität Lodz präsentiert wurden. Der Band folgt dem Konzept von Literatur und Musik als korrespondierende Künste in Anlehnung an Oskar Walzels These von der «wechselseitigen Erhellung der Künste» aus dem Jahr 1917. Diese gründet in Horazʼ Idee von einer heteronomen Natur der Künste und hebt das kreative, dialogische Potenzial des Vergleichs hervor. Durch vielfache Korrespondenzen wird Musik zum Anlass für poetologische bzw. metatextuelle und semantische Reflexion. Die Beiträge befassen sich mit den Wechselverhältnissen zwischen Literatur und Musik, die zum einen die Thematisierung von unterschiedlich funktionalisierten Musik-Zitaten betreffen und zum anderen auch strukturell-rhetorische Analogien erfassen.

Im Mittelpunkt des Buches steht das vielgestaltige und immer noch aktuelle Phänomen des Künstler(tum)s in der Literatur und Kultur. Die hier versammelten Beiträge sollen sowohl als Interpretationsvorschläge von bekannten und weniger bekannten Texten verstanden werden als auch als Versuch, reale und fiktive Künstlerfiguren aus unterschiedlichen Epochen – von Mittelalter, über die Romantik und Moderne, bis Gegenwart – in den Mittelpunkt der Reflexion zu rücken. Die Autorinnen und Autoren verfolgen unterschiedliche, meist komparatistisch ausgerichtete, Forschungsansätze, wobei sie von einem breit verstandenen Begriff des Künstlers ausgehen und ihn in unterschiedlichen Diskursen kontextualisieren.

Fachleute aus den Bereichen der Germanistik und Komparatistik verfolgen in diesem Sammelband neue Forschungsansätze zu Hermann Bahr. Sie untersuchen Diskurse über Kaiserreich und Königtum, Krise und Kritik, Kairos und Katastrophe, Krieg und Kultur in den Essays und Reiseberichten, Zeitungsartikeln und Tagebüchern, aber auch Romanen und anderen Schriften eines Hauptvertreters der Wiener Moderne. Es werden kulturtheoretische Fragen nach der Konstitution und Konstruktion von Identität und dem Zulassen von Differenz gestellt – sowie nach den Konversionen der Weltanschauungen, Ideologien und Religionen vom Provinzialismus und Kosmopolitismus über Nationalismus, Militarismus und Imperialismus zu Katholizismus und Antisemitismus, Austroslawismus, Austromarxismus und Austro-Europäertum.

Das Buch befasst sich mit Ulrich Holbeins äußerst facettenreichem Werk, das neben genuin literarischen Texten auch Essays, zahlreiche Feuilletonbeiträge und Hörspiele beinhaltet. Kennzeichnend für das Œuvre ist die Anwendung avantgardistischer Verfahren bei gleichzeitiger kontinuierlicher Auseinandersetzung mit der literarischen und philosophischen Tradition. Der Band schließt an die allmählich einsetzende wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk des Autors an. Er versammelt sowohl Einzelanalysen seiner bedeutendsten Texte als auch Beiträge zu übergreifenden Fragestellungen wie etwa der ihm eigenen Form der Autorinszenierung oder seiner Publikationspraxis. Ein Verzeichnis sämtlicher Publikationen sowie eine literarische Collage von Selbstzeugnissen des Autors runden das Buch ab.

How it is possible that the story about Elisha's succession in 2 Kings 2:1-18 is now remembered as the story about Elijah's ascent? The intertextual answer is provided by the contrast between the number of references about the human heavenly ascension in the Hebrew Bible, and the popularity of this theme in the Ancient Near East. However, in this dissertation we focus on the more direct intratextual approach. We analyze the construction of the narrative in order to discern the features of style, structure, and symbolism which emphasize Elijah's ascent, rather than Elisha's succession. As a result, we can identify the proto-symbol of the narrative (Gilgal) which is interpreted by three elements (whirlwind, chariotry, and rolled mantle) referring to Elijah's ascent.

Giuseppe Tartini (1692–1770) made history both as an outstanding composer andas an exceptional music theorist. Especially after he began to devote himself tospeculative reflections of music, Tartini seems to have been searching for harmonybetween music theory (which he studied in depth, even reaching back to ancientconcepts of music) and musical practice (his daily routine as composer and violinistat St Anthony's Basilica in Padua and as violin teacher). The present 2nd volume of theseries focuses on both Tartini's musical language and his theoretical deliberations.

Madness, lack of morality,deceitfulness, confusion, misunderstandings, and disguise are common elements inall the plays discussed in the book. Ben Jonson takes the opportunity and presents acritical viewpoint about the Elizabethan and Jacobean laxity and leniency, making thecarnivalesque spirit central to his criticism. This book intends to immerse into ways inwhich characters create chaos within themselves in the selected plays. Shakespeare'sselected plays are supplementary texts that richly add layers, branches, and offices tothe reading of Jonson's society rather than just enriching the comedic impact of theperformances.

The book explores one of the most important problems in Indian philosophical thought: the subject in its particular relation to the world. In what sense does the subject exist? How does it constitute the world? The analysis hinges on Sanskrit sources, mainly the Upanis. ads. However, it goes beyond the question of the subject. The book discusses the concept of how the subject establishes the world, which – in this cognitive perspective – becomes simultaneously recognised and deformed. Overcoming these deformations becomes a specific soteriological path.

The horses in All the Pretty Horses are ubiquitous but rarely the center of attention. Their depiction is surprisingly authentic and without anthropomorphization. This book illustrates how an equicentric reading offers new insights into the novel's spaces, characters, and relationships. It features comparisons with popular horse-narratives and an equicentric analysis of the novel's gender relations. How does horsemanship redefine masculinity? What is the inherent connection between femininity and the equine? This book answers these questions from an equicentric perspective, while taking into account patterns of anthropocentrism and misogyny. In addition, the focus is on the narratees and on how the degree of equine experience they bring to the narrative may enhance the horses'figurative significance.

This study focuses on presenting the techniques of reworking and incorporating intertextual material into contemporary British fiction. Analysing emblematic intertextual strategies: adaptation, pastiche, transworld identity, and historiographic metafiction, the study provides a good insight into how the intertextual impulse can be inscribed not only in the structure and semantics of a given text but also in the narrative plane. Adopting Gerard Genette's and Boris Uspensky's theoretical models, the book aims to demonstrate how the discussed intertextual strategies transform a source text, genre, or literary component and how these creative decodings function on different planes of a literary text.

When, in 1948, Tony Harrison entered Leeds Grammar School as a scholarship boy, he found himself, as Richard Hoggart saw, “at the friction point of two cultures”. His schooling introduced him to the “classics”; but it also deprived him of a clear identification with the place where he grew up. His work reflects and explores this tension; and it may be seen, in some ways, as a form of “identity construction.” The book examines key texts such as v. and the School of Eloquence sequence, where this “construction” takes different forms—oscillating between identity as a state, or a process; as continuity, or change; or as the outcome of conformity, or revolt. This second edition has been extensively revised and includes a new chapter on Harrison's Elegies.

El objetivo de esta investigación consiste en analizar modalidades discursivas tales como ironía y parodia, el funcionamiento narratológico y redes de sentido en novelas del realismo social latinoamericano. El corpus es sometido a un estudio riguroso en que el autor descubre relaciones intertextuales y las clasifica como signos representativos en el marco de una vasta producción a la cual esos textos pertenecen. El estudio se lleva a cabo en base a herramientas de la Pragmática Lingüística y de la Sociocrítica. La lectura general enfatiza la manera en que los narradores construyen sus imaginarios desde voces dialógicas y monológicas. El trabajo describe la riqueza cultural de ciertas sociedades latinoamericanas, tradiciones, conflictos políticos e ideológicos así como también movimientos estudiantiles y obreros que combaten contra sistemas opresivos en el siglo XX. El análisis de los imaginarios sociales se traza como meta última reevaluar la relevancia del género.

This book indicates that postmodern literature might reveal much in common with radical environmental movements. It also offers discussions for how an ecological postmodern literary theory can provide significant contributions to the paradigm shift in social and individual dimensions before the extant environmental crisis turns into a deeper turmoil. In this context, concerning ecological images and environmental discussions they provide, A History of the World in 10 ½ Chapters by Julian Barnes, Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell and The Collector by John Fowles are analyzed through the lens of such radical ecological movements like deep ecology, social ecology and ecofeminism.

The Covid-19 pandemic has thrust us all into a warped, disjointed ‘coronatime,'which has both uncontrollably accelerated, and interminably decelerated, or got frozen. Just like the pandemic, this book provides a chance to reevaluate neoliberalism's temporal regimes of growth, decline, deceleration and acceleration. South Africa and its contemporary literature are a perfect background against which to think about temporality experimentally. Focusing on three South African authors, André Brink, J.M. Coetzee and Zakes Mda, the book examines contemporary South African revisioning of time and alterity. Through some of the previously unexplored texts, it studies what living in a post-conflict, post-revolutionary and highly traumatized society entails for one's perception of time and otherness.

Der vorliegende Band ist das Ergebnis einer wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit den Problemen unserer Zeit, die durch die Folgen der Globalisierung geprägt ist. Im Zentrum der Beiträge steht die Reflexion über die Bedeutung von kulturellem Erbe, von Geisteswissenschaften, von nationalem Geschichts-bewusstsein und von historischen Erinnerungsorten. In diesem Zusammenhang wird Alexander von Humboldt in der Literatur des 21. Jahrhunderts als Vorreiter des globalen Denkens und als Erkunder der Welttopographie gewürdigt. Die Autoren der Beiträge reflektieren zudem die Polyvalenz von modernen Identitäten im globalen Raum. Sie diskutieren den Begriff «Weltliteratur», unterschiedliche literarische Topoi der Mehrsprachigkeit und die Umsetzung von globalen Krisen in Literatur und Kunst.

Die vorliegende Untersuchung basiert auf der Relation zwischen Architektur und Literatur. Im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung befindet sich das Syntagma ‚gotische Architektur‘ und deren Rezeption in der russischen Literatur. Der begriffsgeschichtlichen Herangehensweise annähernd stütz sich der Diskurs auf einen Textkorpus, dessen Bestandteile zwischen 1700 und dem Anfang des 20. Jh. entstanden. Die literarischen Werke wurden nach dem semantischen Wandel und der Funktion der ‚gotischen‘ Bauten befragt. Mithilfe kunsthistorischer Aspekte und eines vielschichtigen Ideen- bzw. Metaphergehalts zeigte sich, dass Begriffe komplexe Inhalte und weitreichende Interpretation in sich tragen können.

In 1719, the former secretary of State and famous English writer Joseph Addison passed away and was burried in Westminster Abbey among the great national poets. A few decades later, the great lexicographer Samuel Johnson defined Joseph Addison's prose style as the quintessence of Englishness in his Lives of the English Poets. This selection of essays ambitions to celebrate the tercentenary of his death by showing that Addison was part of the European as much as the English Enlightenment. It explores how European countries and cultures played a decisive, if somewhat ambiguous role in his career and writing. Does Jesus remain concealed by the very traditions intended to portray him? History and theology define Jesus to be a 1st-century Galilean or the son of God, a man limited by his time and place or exalted as the Messiah and Christ. He has been recognized as a Jewish rabbi or the prophet of a coming apocalypse. The quest for the historical Jesus and theology's Christ of faith may both be essential and undeniable in the history of scholarship. Secular historians and the Christian church have made their claims. Jesus'self-conception, however, has been neglected, his consciousness largely ignored. A new interpretation of the gospels presents Jesus as a unprecedented human being who will'utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world'(Matt. 13:35) and make their meanings significant for the here and now. Jesus'life from the virgin birth to the resurrection can neither be reduced to history's scepticism nor theology's affirmation. Is it possible to re-imagine the life and words of Jesus? He reveals himself to be a'first-born'who makes possible the second act of creation for every individual no less than for the social world.

Ahora puede conocerse mejor la vida de José Donoso, su modo de trabajo, sus proyectos, conclusos o inconclusos, y sus muchas y varias fuentes de inspiración.

This research sheds new light on Angela Carter's critique of her contemporary world, not only as a feminist and socialist but also as a political writer who lived through the twentieth century, an unprecedented period when even the meanings of life, death, and survivability changed drastically. The book examines Carter's portrayals of mortality in her nine novels through the lens of the Cold War and subsequent fears of nuclear catastrophe and sudden death, alongside the comfort blanket of the post-war welfare state. Focusing on the mutual dialogues between Carter and actual historical events, from Hiroshima and the Cuban Missile Crisis to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and Thatcherism, the book aims to reconsider her oeuvre from a twenty-first century perspective.

This book examines the oracle of deliverance that Yhwh communicated to Ebed-melech, the Cushite (Jer 39,15-18). In order to comprehend this analeptically presented promise, however, the research also scrutinizes two other related events in Jeremiah's mission in the context of Jer 37–39: i) the unpleasant incident in which the Jerusalem officials maliciously threw the Lord's messenger into the muddy cistern (Jer 38,1–6) and ii) Ebed-melech's benevolent intervention to rescue the prophet from the water reservoir (Jer 38,7-13). In this monograph, the author uses the historical-critical method and rhetorical & narrative analyses.

Der Band möchte an die Relevanz von Lehrerfiguren für die europäische Literatur seit der Antike am Beispiel der deutschen Literatur erinnern. Seine Beiträge setzen im Mittelalter ein und führen über Frühe Neuzeit und Moderne bis in die Gegenwart. Dabei zeigt sich nicht nur eine Fülle verschiedener Figurationen des Lehrers (die Enden des Spektrums sind mit dem Heiligen Geist auf der einen und dem Teufel auf der anderen Seite markiert, in der Mitte stehen Vögel als animalische Lehrerfiguren), deutlich wird auch, wie unterschiedlich die Gattungszusammenhänge sind, in denen sie auftauchen, und ebenso die Funktionen, die sie haben.

¿Cómo están codificadas las emociones en en las ficciones del siglo XXI de América Latina y España? ¿Hay emociones que ocupan un lugar hegemónico y cómo se relacionan con las narraciones de la crisis? ¿Qué papel desempeñan las emociones extremas – la furia y la felicidad – en la vida social actual y hasta qué punto están reguladas por la violencia simbólica?　La perspectiva teórica escogida defiende que el análisis de la producción cultural debe incluir las emociones en el estudio de las dinámicas de poder que operan en ellas. Lxs autorxs analizan el corpus escogido con respecto a la construcción y (re)construcción de las emociones con sus tabúes, sus prohibiciones tácticas, sus manipulaciones y sus promesas, así como con los modelos prescriptivos de género y sexualidad.

Tomasz Garbol's book reconstructs Czesław Miłosz's poetic vision of the world after the Fall. The entry point to this approach is the conviction about the ambivalence of previous interpretations of Miłosz's works, especially about his bipolar poetic worldview (his intellectual and existential division between pessimism and ecstasy) and his understanding of the consequences of the Fall (reversible or fatalistic). The book is a literary studies take on the relationship between literature and religion. The main direction is that Miłosz's main need in art comes from his yearning for contact with the meaning of reality, which he seeks in the activity of poetic imagination.

This book is an attempt at a new interpretation of Stravinsky's thoughts about music and art, an interpretation made in dialogue with the philosophy of new music and 19th-century artistic ideas. It is also a proposal for a new method of analysing the construction of his musical masterpieces (for example a proposal of new formal sound-units: partons with perceptual invariance), a method in-spired by research into cognitive psychology. Furthermore, in the analysis of Stravinsky's music, the author emphasises its connection with the Eastern and Western traditions of European culture and links with Plato's triad of values.

The author re-examines the urban novels of Auster and Pamuk in the light of Foucault's heterotopia and Bhabha's the Third Space, respectively. Furthermore, for the discussions of the nature of the relationship between the self and the other, this present study deploys Emmanuel Levinas's ethics. This book argues that examining the urban spaces and characters of Auster and Pamuk through the prisms of Foucault, Bhabha and Levinas establishes a new critical framework that gives a constructive and ethical angle to the negative late twentieth-century and early twenty-first century discourses on the city and its inhabitants. The reader of this book will discover urban subjects who actively transform their respective cities into either heterotopic or Third Spaces and thereby become response-able for and attentive to their immediate surroundings, to their national or personal histories and, most importantly, to other people. At the same time, by bringing these two different cities, cultures and authors that are poles apart together, this book aims to problematize commonly held beliefs about Americanness and Turkishness and thus pave the way for looking at discourses such as «clash of civilizations», «margin» (Istanbul) and «center» (New York), the belated and the advanced from a critical point of view suggesting that there is a common discursive affinity with similar outlooks on life, personal, historical and physical spaces on both sides, rather than a «clash of civilizations». The arguments presented here will be of interest to students and scholars of city literature, comparative literature and history of ideas as well as to readers who have an interest in theory and close reading.

This book is a collection of articles written by international scholars and dealing with passing from a textual and cultural perspective. All these explorations of a complex identity phenomenon that defies reductive dualities result in scholarly interrogations of societal arrangements. The texts under perusal belong to different historical periods and various communities. The novelty of this collection is that passing is viewed not only as a racial or gendered transformation, but also as a religious one. The book deals with passing either as a strategy that results in assimilation, melting, and merging, or as resistance and challenge against the whiteness-only-based identity politics.

Maciej Nowak's book is the first monograph on the writings of Andrzej Bobkowski (1913–1961), a Polish émigré writer from the millieu of Jerzy Giedroyc's Kultura journal. Bobkowski is famous for his diary Wartime Notebooks: France 1940–1944, translated into many languages, including English. Using current methods of the French school in the study of diaristics and epistolography, Nowak overcomes the limits of aesthetic analysis to reach the anthropological center of Bobkowski's authorial practices. In this way, Nowak unveils the existential and axiological dimension of Bobkowski's work. Thus, the book offers a coherent depiction of the rich and diverse writings of Bobkowski, prepared with methods of modern humanities.

The book comprehensively examines the Sh‘ir magazine published in Beirut (1957-1964; 1967-1969). The magazine's editors sought to generate a profound change in the role and form of Arabic poetry as a tool to support a significant leap forward in the Arab thinking and writing. The book traces the mechanism of development of the magazine's content and the thinking of its main editors, through in-depth textual analysis of the three main branches of the magazine's content: translated poetry, original Arabic poetry, and articles of literary criticism. Each of these branches is accompanied by a complete appendix of relevant items. The analysis revals the significant role that Sh‘ir played in enabling a new kind of secular and personal poetics, including that of prose-poetry and vision poems.

Este volumen propende por mantener la vigencia de Tomás Carrasquilla, así como su contribución a la literatura regional, nacional y universal, toda vez que presenta diversas y novedosas interpretaciones que enriquecen la lectura de algunas producciones narrativas y ensayísticas del escritor colombiano. A partir de diversos planteamientos, los autores de los capítulos se ocupan de los logros literarios, las apuestas estéticas y la particular cosmovisión social, cultural y política de don Tomás, aproximaciones críticas que aportan a la conservación, valoración y difusión del legado literario de Carrasquilla.

The author frames her reconstruction of the Bay Area poet, scholar, and experimental prose writer Leslie Scalapino's transmedial poetics in the context of Scalapino's published writings, available criticism of her works, as well as previously unpublished archival materials located among The Mandeville Special Collections and Archives at UC San Diego. Ein gemeinsamer Nenner ist die Verwendung der deutschen Sprache in Kommunikation, im DaF-Unterricht, in Erinnerungskultur mit ihren semantischen Phänomenen, sowie unter pragmatischem Aspekt. Erörtert werden Fragestellungen zu parlamentarischen Zwischenrufen, Funktionsverbgefügen in den Online-Zeitungen, der DDR-Geschichte und ihrer Rezeption, zur Höflichkeit unter den Studenten von heute, zu Phrasemen im modernen Fremdsprachenunterricht, semantischen Relationen in Komposita anhand von deutscher Küche bis hin zu bevor- und ehe-Subjunktoren sowie Zeitverlaufsstrukturen.

Mio Cid e D. Sebastião são figuras centrais no discurso identitário da Península Ibérica. Sobretudo no século XX, marcado por transformações políticas, servem para tomar posição relativamente à situação nacional. O estudo investiga, de uma perspectiva ibérica, o recurso às figuras míticas nas literaturas espanhola e portuguesa do século XX. Exploram-se, por um lado, as construções mútuas de identidade e alteridade e, por outro, os temas que se discutem mediante estas figuras. Situada na intersecção dos Estudos Literários com a Sociologia, a análise centra-se na manifestação literária do discurso mitológico, na sua relação com outros temas e no seu posicionamento no contexto sociopolítico.

Der Sammelband ist ein internationales Projekt, das die Probleme der in Deutschland lebenden und schreibenden Migranten sowie ihrer Nachfahren aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven beleuchtet und über das Migrantendasein reflektiert. Philologen, Politologen, Historiker, Juristen, Soziologen und Pädagogen aus Kroatien, Bulgarien, Rumänien, Spanien, Frankreich, Finnland, Polen, Deutschland und der Türkei präsentieren vor allem sprachliche und kulturelle Interaktionen zwischen Einheimischen und Zugezogenen in der Literatur und in der außerliterarischen Welt. Im Fokus stehen gesellschaftspolitische, juristische und kulturelle Fragen, die sich auf Phänomene wie Identität, Heterogenität und Hybridisierung beziehen.

Das Buch hat die Darstellung deutsch-jüdischer Identität in ausgewählten Prosatexten des zeitgenössischen, deutsch-jüdischen Autors Maxim Biller zum Thema. Seit 1989 ist jüdisches Leben in Deutschland «sichtbarer» und heterogener geworden. Das liegt maßgeblich an der veränderten Selbstrepräsentation vieler jüngerer Juden. In und mit seinen Texten Der gebrauchte Jude (2009), Esra (2003), Die Tochter (2000) und seinen Kurzgeschichten (1990/1994) bricht Maxim Biller – der kontroverseste Vertreter der sogenannten Zweiten Generation – mit den Tabus, die den Diskurs über deutsch-jüdische Identität nach wie vor bestimmen. Wie, warum und mit welchen Effekten er das macht, analysiert die Autorin mithilfe von Michel Foucaults Diskurstheorie und Judith Butlers Theorie der Performativität.

Cette étude de la Correspondance de Madame de Sévigné est fondée sur plusieurs significations du terme « romanesque ». Les lettres de la marquise ne sont pas un roman mais elles présentent de multiples traits « romanesques » qui permettent une lecture particulière du chef-d'œuvre épistolaire. L'art du récit, les thèmes, le style, les références variées au monde des romans et la présence de cet univers dans la vie de la marquise et de son milieu constituent les axes de l'analyse. Le but de cette étude est de montrer l'omniprésence du « romanesque » dans le champ culturel de l'époque et son influence sur les esprits et les œuvres littéraires.
