Inklings nannte sich eine Gruppe von Schriftstellern und Geisteswissenschaftlern in Oxford, deren bekannteste Mitglieder J.R.R. Tolkien und C.S. Lewis waren. Die Inklings-Gesellschaft e. V. widmet sich seit 1983 dem Studium und der Verbreitung der Werke dieser und ihnen nahestehender Autoren sowie der Analyse des Phantastischen in Literatur, Film und Kunst allgemein. Ihre Jahrestagungen werden in Jahrbüchern dokumentiert. Dieser Band enthält neun Vorträge der Tagung Düstere Aussichten – Margaret Atwoods imaginative Expeditionen in das Unwohnliche, die 2014 in Düren stattfand und sich neben Atwoods Romanen auch mit der Rolle des Nordens in der Literatur beschäftigte. Fünf weitere Beiträge und zahlreiche Rezensionen ergänzen das Buch. Inklings was the name of a group of Oxford scholars and writers whose best-known members were J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. The German Inklings-Gesellschaft, founded in 1983, is dedicated to the discussion and dissemination of their works and of writers commonly associated with them and to the study of the fantastic in literature, film and the arts in general. The proceedings of the annual Inklings conferences are being published in yearbooks. This volume contains nine papers presented at the 2014 conference on Dark Visions – Margaret Atwood's Imaginative Travels into the Regions of the Uncomfortable. The contributions deal with Atwood's novels and also with the role of the North in literature at large. In addition, there are five general articles and numerous reviews.

The contents of this book deliberate on the questions related to the function of art and to aesthetics as they exist in the context of the most salient philosophical and cultural late modernist tendencies. The book extracts cornerstone elements of the ever-changing ways people of the 20th and 21st centuries experience the world, and highlights the relation between shifts in modern art, and the processes of fictionalization. Particular focus was placed on a phenomenological perspective. The publication introduces novelty by showcasing the links between reflecting on late modernity, and the philosophical concepts and methodological capabilities of phenomenology. It is a panoramic outlook over existing views, and simultaneously a self-sufficient theoretical proposal.

The book focuses on the phenomenon of a face in philosophical, cognitive, and aesthetical context. Text is divided into two main parts: the first is considering the face as an object. The second part is about specific facets of the face and how faces are portrayed in portraits. The text focuses on the etymology of the term «face» and its semantic roots. It considers various uses of the word «face» in metaphors and the idea that through a metaphorical use of the word face, there is a link to human identity or personality. The second part of this book details portraits, their etymology and semantic roots, history and various functions in history. Regarding the various transformations of portraits and mainly the invention of photography, it also deals with the problem of the end, or death of a portrait.

The presented book is a direct sequel to the previous collections of studies “The Cognitive Aspects of Aesthetic Experience - Introduction” (2017) and “The Cognitive Aspects of Aesthetic Experience – Selected Problems” (2019), and represents the culmination of the project which examines whether it is possible to identify the cognitive aspects or purposes in aesthetic judgments and in the perception of beauty, and whether it is possible to meaningfully establish cognitive aesthetics as a unified scientific discipline (philosophy united with a cognitive approach), studying the epistemic background of beauty and art.

The book is a second volume of the project, which is focused on a systematic examination of aesthetic experience by the unification of philosophical and cognitive-scientific approaches to beauty and aesthetic experience. This volume is focused on the analysis of selected aspects of aesthetic experience, especially on methodological problems and aspects of philosophical and scientific research, the question of the complementarity and compatibility of methods, and needs to interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research. Authors of the chapters are considering about diverse areas of perception of beauty, e.g.: pleasure by face perception; the synchronicity by music; the problems of musical chills; the psychosomatic unity of dance; or the problem of development of aesthetic appreciation.

The collected volume brings together leading scholars from a broad range of disciplines in the humanities to interrogate the productivity of style as an element of cultural expression and a parameter of cultural analysis. Despite its ubiquity in examinations of artistic singularity or postulations of epochal patterns, style remains a notoriously elusive concept. Suspicious of monolithic definitions, the contributions assembled in this volume address style from a multiplicity of methodological and conceptual angles, drawing from fields that include literary studies, film and media studies, post-structuralist philosophy, philosophy of science, and American cultural studies.

Past philosophical ideas about arts influence contemporary artistic practices. We still use traditional Idealist concepts, such as the autonomy of art or the subjective expression of the artist. At the same time, today's art often attacks and abandons Idealist thinking. The author of this book analyses this relation between the Idealist conception of the arts including literature and present-day reality. The aim is to create a link between past and present artistic practices and theoretical, philosophical thinking. The author also questions the Idealist notions of history and the relation between the theoretical, the aesthetic and the practical, and seeks new ways to deal with the relation between the past and the present.

Style research has a long and venerable tradition, but its results are highly fragmented. Style exists in language and literature, art and architecture – but every discipline has its own theories. New approaches in empirical aesthetics and multimodality call for broader perspectives. This book offers an overview of experimental research on style, and proposes a common theoretical basis. How do we perceive styles? How do styles change – and why? What is multimodal style? Are style and personality really connected? How is style related to aesthetic experiences? Which cognitive mechanisms are relevant for the creation and perception of styles? Are there neural correlates for style use? The book discusses these and further questions, providing researchers with a valuable source of new ideas.

The book uses scientific discipline of chemistry to inform a Natural Theology. While Natural Theology typically employs scientific analysis from Cosmology, Physics, Mathematics and at times Biology the author extends the subject. He refers to the perception of beauty to provide a conceptual framework linking aspects of Epistemology, Theology and Chemistry. The volume presents a working definition of Natural Theology and a new definition of Beauty that bridges the conceptual gaps between the humanities and the hard sciences.

Aestheticism is broader in scope than the philosophy of art. It is also broader than the philosophy of beauty, in that it applies to any of the responses we might expect works of art or entertainment to elicit, whether positive or negative. That is why the articles in this collective volume aim to highlight the various reverberations of aestheticism on literature and education over the centuries.

Im Rahmen der aktuellen Diskussion zur ästhetischen und kulturellen Bildung gehen Autorinnen und Autoren unterschiedlicher kulturwissenschaftlicher Disziplinen der Frage nach, was ästhetische Erfahrungen sind. Indem sie interdisziplinär sowie ästhetisch-transformatorisch arbeiten, können sie erörtern, wie sich etwas derart Flüchtiges und der Subjektivität Verhaftetes empirisch fassen und in Bildungsinstitutionen initiieren und vermitteln lässt. In den Projekten verlassen die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer den gewohnten Lernort, übersetzen Materialien in Sprache und Schrift, Texte in Film oder Literatur in Tanz oder werden dazu angehalten, ihre eigenen Wahrnehmungsmuster zu hinterfragen.

The essays in the first part of this book, «Art and Aesthetics», are devoted to the invention and development of aesthetics as a discipline. The essays'topics range from the nature of analytic aesthetics and the invention of modern aesthetics to notions of the aesthetic and of aesthetics. Further study in this part explores the «aesthetic turn», Bourdieu's critique of aesthetics and understanding and appreciating art. The second part, «Music, Literature, and Painting», deals with questions of form and content, musical formalism, Susanne Langer's theory of music as well as with the analogy between ornament and music and the values of literature. In addition, there is an essay on «Northern Light and Darkness in Music and Painting». The third part, «Heidegger and the Essence of Art», is devoted to Heidegger's philosophy of art, in particular to the role he assigns to van Gogh and Hölderlin. And in the fourth and final part, «Modernity/Postmodernity and Culture», postmodern conceptions of history and Lyotard's theory of the postmodern sublime are discussed, and in the last essay the challenge of evolutionary psychology to the humanities is addressed.

Thinking Media Aesthetics. Media Studies, Film Studies and the Arts brings together contributions from different disciplines from both sides of the Atlantic and from several generations. The book investigates the field between media studies, film and the arts and attempts to consolidate the fruitful interaction we have witnessed between the disciplines during the last decade into a focused interdisciplinary program that combines theoretical argumentation with exemplification and analysis of individual artworks and media phenomena.

Embodying Pragmatism is the first monograph in English devoted to Richard Shusterman, an internationally renowned philosopher and one of today's most innovative thinkers in pragmatism and aesthetics. The book presents a comprehensive account of Shusterman's principal philosophical ideas concerning pragmatism, aesthetics, and literary theory (including such themes as interpretation, aesthetic experience, popular art, and human embodiment – culminating in his proposal of a new discipline called «somaesthetics»). As Shusterman's philosophical writings involve a dialogue with both analytic and continental traditions, this monograph not only offers a critical vision of contemporary pragmatist thought but also situates Shusterman and pragmatism within the current state of theory.
