In this paper, the efficiency of micellar enhanced ultrafiltration technique (MEUF) was tested for the removal of yttrium and zinc ions from synthetic industrial liquid wastes. UF membranes (monotubular ceramic membranes of 210 kDa and 1 kDa molecular weight cut-off) were used with adding an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). A two - level full factorial design was performed in order to evaluate the effect of molecular weight cut-off, sodium dodecyl sulfate concentration and pressure on the permeate flux and rejection yields. It was found that the single factors presented the largest influence on the permeate flux: the membrane pore size and the pressure had positive effect, instead the SDS had negative effect. Regarding the metal rejection yields the main relevant factors were the membrane pore size with a negative effect, followed by the surfactant concentration with a positive effect. The effect of the pressure seemed to be almost negligible, for zinc removal experiments had a positive effect in the interactions with the surfactant and membrane pore size. The results showed that very good removal percentages up to 99% were achieved for both metals under the following conditions: 1 kDa membrane MWCO, in the presence of the surfactant at a concentration above CMC independently of the investigated pressure., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. The present paper deals with physico-mechanical pre-treatments for dismantling of spent liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and further recovery of valuable fractions like plastic, glass and indium. After a wide experimental campaign, two processes were designed, tested and optimized. In the wet process, 20%, 15% and 40% by weight of the feeding panels are recovered as plastic, glass and indium concentrate, respectively. Instead, in the dry process, only two fractions were separated: around 11% and 85% by weight are recovered as plastic and glass/indium mixture. Indium, that concentrated in the -212μm fraction, was completely dissolved by sulphuric acid leaching (0.75molL -1 H 2 SO 4 solution, 80°C, 10%vol H 2 O 2 , pulp density 10%wt/vol, leaching time 3h). 100% of indium can be extracted from the pregnant solution with 5%wt/vol Amberlite™ resin, at room temperature and pH 3 in 24h. Indium was thus re-extracted from the resin by means of a 2molL -1 H 2 SO 4 solution, at room temperature and S/L of 40%wt/vol., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)

With the increase in environmental awareness, the disposal of any form of hazardous waste has become a great concern for the industrial sector. Spent catalysts contribute to a significant amount of the solid waste generated by the petrochemical and petroleum refining industry. Hydro-cracking and hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalysts are extensively used in the petroleum refining and petrochemical industries. The catalysts used in the refining processes lose their effectiveness over time. When the activity of catalysts decline below the acceptable level, they are usually regenerated and reused but regeneration is not possible every time. Recycling of some industrial waste containing base metals (such as V, Ni, Co, Mo) is estimated as an economical opportunity in the exploitation of these wastes. Alkali roasted catalysts can be leached in water to get the Mo and V in solution (in which temperature plays an important role during leaching). Several techniques are possible to separate the different metals, among those selective precipitation and solvent extraction are the most used. Pyrometallurgical treatment and bio-hydrometallurgical leaching were also proposed in the scientific literature but up to now they did not have any industrial application. Indium is a critical element mainly produced as a by-product of zinc mining, and it is largely used in the production process of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels. End-of-life LCDs represent a possible source of indium in the field of urban mining. In the present paper, we apply, for the first time, cross-current leaching to mobilize indium from end-of-life LCD panels. We carried out a series of treatments to leach indium. The best leaching conditions for indium were 2M sulfuric acid at 80°C for 10min, which allowed us to completely mobilize indium. Taking into account the low content of indium in end-of-life LCDs, of about 100ppm, a single step of leaching is not cost-effective. We tested 6 steps of cross-current leaching: in the first step indium leaching was complete, whereas in the second step it was in the range of 85-90%, and with 6 steps it was about 50-55%. Indium concentration in the leachate was about 35mg/L after the first step of leaching, almost 2-fold at the second step and about 3-fold at the fifth step. Then, we hypothesized to scale up the process of cross-current leaching up to 10 steps, followed by cementation with zinc to recover indium. In this simulation, the process of indium recovery was advantageous from an economic and environmental point of view. Indeed, cross-current leaching allowed to concentrate indium, save reagents, and reduce the emission of CO2 (with 10 steps we assessed that the emission of about 90kg CO2-Eq. could be avoided) thanks to the recovery of indium. This study refers to two chemical leaching systems for the base and precious metals extraction from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs); sulfuric acid with hydrogen peroxide have been used for the first group of metals, meantime thiourea with the ferric ion in sulfuric acid medium were employed for the second one. The cementation process with zinc, copper and iron metal powders was attempted for solutions purification. The effects of hydrogen peroxide volume in rapport with sulfuric acid concentration and temperature were evaluated for oxidative leaching process. 2M H2SO4 (98% w/v), 5% H2O2, 25 °C, 1/10 S/L ratio and 200 rpm were founded as optimal conditions for Cu extraction. Thiourea acid leaching process, performed on the solid filtrate obtained after three oxidative leaching steps, was carried out with 20 g/L of CS(NH2)2, 6g/L of Fe(3+), 0.5M H2SO4, The cross-leaching method was applied by reusing of thiourea liquid suspension and immersing 5 g/L of this reagent for each other experiment material of leaching. This procedure has lead to the doubling and, respectively, tripling, of gold and silver concentrations into solution. Yttrium is important rare earths (REs) used in numerous fields, mainly in the phosphor powders for low-energy lighting. The uses of these elements, especially for high-tech products are increased in recent years and combined with the scarcity of the resources and the environmental impact of the technologies to extract them from ores make the recycling waste, that contain Y and other RE, a priority. The present review summarized the main hydrometallurgical technologies to extract Y from ores, contaminated solutions, WEEE and generic wastes. Before to discuss the works about the treatment of wastes, the processes to retrieval Y from ores are discussed, since the processes are similar and derived from those already developed for the extraction from primary sources. Particular attention was given to the recovery of Y from WEEE because the recycle of them is important not only for economical point of view, considering its value, but also for environmental impact that this could be generated if not properly disposal., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper, yttrium recovery from fluorescent powder of lamps and cathode ray tubes (CRTs) is described. The process for treating these materials includes the following: (a) acid leaching, (b) purification of the leach liquors using sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide, (c) precipitation of yttrium using oxalic acid, and (d) calcinations of oxalates for production of yttrium oxides. Experimental results have shown that process conditions necessary to purify the solutions and recover yttrium strongly depend on composition of the leach liquor, in other words, whether the powder comes from treatment of CRTs or lamp. In the optimal experimental conditions, the recoveries of yttrium oxide are about 95%, 55%, and 65% for CRT, lamps, and CRT/lamp mixture (called MIX) powders, respectively. The lower yields obtained during treatments of MIX and lamp powders are probably due to the co-precipitation of yttrium together with other metals contained in the lamps powder only. Yttrium loss can be reduced to minimum changing the experimental conditions with respect to the case of the CRT process. In any case, the purity of final products from CRT, lamps, and MIX is greater than 95%. Moreover, the possibility to treat simultaneously both CRT and lamp powders is very important and interesting from an industrial point of view since it could be possible to run a single plant treating fluorescent powder coming from two different electronic wastes., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. This work is focused on the recovery of yttrium and zinc from fluorescent powder of cathode ray tube (CRT). Metals are extracted by sulphuric acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Leaching tests are carried out according to a 2(2) full factorial plan and the highest extraction yields for yttrium and zinc equal to 100% are observed under the following conditions: 3M of sulphuric acid, 10% v/v of H2O2 concentrated solution at 30% v/v, 10% w/w pulp density, 70°C and 3h of reaction. Two series of precipitation tests for zinc are carried out: a 2(2) full factorial design and a completely randomized factorial design. In these series the factors investigated are pH of solution during the precipitation and the amount of sodium sulphide added to precipitate zinc sulphide. The data of these tests are used to describe two empirical mathematical models for zinc and yttrium precipitation yields by regression analysis. The highest precipitation yields for zinc are obtained under the following conditions: pH equal to 2-2.5% and 10-12%v/v of Na2S concentrated solution at 10%w/v. In these conditions the coprecipitation of yttrium is of 15-20%. Finally further yttrium precipitation experiments by oxalic acid on the residual solutions, after removing of zinc, show that yttrium could be recovered and calcined to obtain the final product as yttrium oxide. The achieved results allow to propose a CRT recycling process based on leaching of fluorescent powder from cathode ray tube and recovery of yttrium oxide after removing of zinc by precipitation. The present lab-scale experimental study presents the process of leaching waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) in order to recover gold by thioureation. Preliminary tests have shown that copper adversely affects gold extraction; therefore an oxidative leaching pre-treatment was performed in order to remove base metals. The effects of sulfuric acid concentration, hydrogen peroxide volume and temperature on the metal extraction yield were studied by analysis of variance (ANOVA). The highest copper extraction yields were 76.12% for sample A and 18.29% for sample D, after leaching with 2M H2SO4, 20 ml of 30% H2O2 at 30°C for 3h. In order to improve Cu removal, a second leaching was performed only on sample A, resulting in a Cu extraction yield of 90%. Other experiments have shown the negative effect of the stirring rate on copper dissolution. The conditions used for the process of gold extraction by thiourea were: 20 g/L thiourea, 6g/L ferric ion, 10 g/L sulfuric acid, 600 rpm stirring rate. To study the influence of temperature and particle size, this process was tested on pins manually removed from computer central processing units (CPUs) and on waste CPU for 3½ h. A gold extraction yield of 69% was obtained after 75% of Cu was removed by a double oxidative leaching treatment of WPCBs with particle sizes smaller than 2 mm., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The present work deals with the application of biotechnology for the mobilization of metals from different solid wastes: end of life industrial catalysts, heavy metal contaminated marine sediments and fluorescent powders coming from a cathode ray tube glass recycling process. Performed experiments were aimed at assessing the performance of acidophilic chemoautotrophic Fe/S-oxidizing bacteria for such different solid matrices, also focusing on the effect of solid concentration and of different substrata. The achieved results have evidenced that metal solubilization seems to be strongly influenced by the metal speciation and partitioning in the solid matrix. No biological effect was observed for Ni, Zn, As, Cr mobilization from marine sediments (34%, 44%, 15%, 10% yields, respectively) due to metal partitioning. On the other hand, for spent refinery catalysts (Ni, V, Mo extractions of 83%, 90% and 40%, respectively) and fluorescent powders (Zn and Y extraction of 55% and 70%, respectively), the improvement in metal extraction observed in the presence of a microbial activity confirms the key role of Fe/S oxidizing bacteria and ferrous iron. The paper deals with recovery of yttrium from fluorescent powder coming from dismantling of spent fluorescent tubes. Metals are leached by using different acids (nitric, hydrochloric and sulphuric) and ammonia in different leaching tests. These tests show that ammonia is not suitable to recover yttrium, whereas HNO(3) produces toxic vapours. A full factorial design is carried out with HCl and H(2)SO(4) to evaluate the influence of operating factors. HCl and H(2)SO(4) leaching systems give similar results in terms of yttrium extraction yield, but the last one allows to reduce calcium extraction with subsequent advantage during recovery of yttrium compounds in the downstream. The greatest extraction of yttrium is obtained by 20% w/v S/L ratio, 4N H(2)SO(4) concentration and 90°C. Yttrium and calcium yields are nearly 85% and 5%, respectively. The analysis of variance shows that acid concentration alone and interaction between acid and pulp density have a significant positive effect on yttrium solubilization for both HCl and H(2)SO(4) medium. Two models are empirically developed to estimate yttrium and calcium concentration during leaching. Precipitation tests demonstrate that at least the stoichiometric amount of oxalic acid is necessary to recover yttrium efficiently and a pure yttrium oxalate n-hydrate can be produced (99% grade). The process is economically feasible if other components of the fluorescent lamps (glass, ferrous and non-ferrous scraps) are recovered after the equipment dismantling and valorized, besides the cost that is usually paid to recycling companies for collection, treatment or final disposal of such fluorescent powders., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The process of reducing acid leaching of manganiferous ore is aimed at the extraction of manganese from low grade manganese ores. This work is focused on the iron removal operation. The following items have been considered in order to investigate the effect of the main operating conditions on solid waste disposal and on the process costs: (i) type and quantity of the base agent used for iron precipitation, (ii) effective need of leaching waste separation prior to the iron removal operation, (iii) presence of a second leaching stage with the roasted ore, which might also act as a preliminary iron removal step, and (iv) effect of tailings washing on the solid waste classification. Different base compounds have been tested, including CaO, CaCO3, NaOH, and Na2CO3. The latter gave the best results concerning both the precipitation process kinetics and the reagent consumption. The filtration of the liquor leach prior to iron removal was not necessary, implying significant savings in capital costs. A reduction of chemical consumption and an increase of manganese concentration in the solution were obtained by introducing secondary leaching tests with the previously roasted ore; this additional step was introduced without a significant decrease of global manganese extraction yield. Finally, toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) tests carried out on the leaching solid waste showed: (i) a reduction of arsenic mobility in the presence of iron precipitates, and (ii) the need for a washing step in order to produce a waste that is classifiable as not dangerous, taking into consideration the existing Environmental National Laws.

Biosorption of copper by Sphaerotilus natans in different conditions of ionic strength and pH was studied by performing sorption tests in batch and membrane reactors. Equilibrium batch tests evidenced the negative effect of ionic strength and the positive effect of pH on biosorption performances: the highest determined value for copper specific uptake, q, was about 60 mg/g at pH 6 and about 15 mg/g at pH 4. A competitive equilibrium model was successfully fitted to experimental data at different ionic strength levels to account for copper-sodium competition. In membrane reactor tests, experimental profiles of copper concentration in the permeate vs. time did not evidence a significant effect of ionic strength at low pH values (4 and 5). On the other hand a more remarkable effect of ionic strength on copper concentration in the permeate was observed at pH 6. Experimental profiles of continuous biosorption in the membrane reactors were successfully simulated by developing a dynamic model accounting for Cu-Na competition and for binding ability of cells fragments.

Alkaline waters produced by caprolactam plants polymerizing the fibres of nylon-6 are characterized by a very high alkalinity, salinity and COD values, in addition to the presence of recalcitrant organic molecules. These characteristics make alkaline wastewaters very difficult to treat; so the development of the suitable sequence to carry out in a depuration process appears of great interest. The proposed general process consists of three main steps: first, pre-treatment for the acidification of the polluted stream, second, a successive extraction of the bio-recalcitrant compound (noted as cycloexanecarboxysulphonic acid (CECS)) and a final biological treatment. In particular, this paper deals with the pre-treatment step: it consists of an acidification process by means of sulphuric acid with the concomitant precipitation of black slurries in the presence of different substances, such as solvents, CaCl2, bentonite, several flocculants and coagulants. The aim of this study is to set an experimental procedure, which could minimize fouling problems during sludge filtration. The use of additives like bentonite seems to give the best results, because it allows good COD reductions and a filterable precipitate, which avoids excessive fouling problems of the experimental apparatus.

Continuous heavy metal biosorption in membrane reactor apparatus using binary metal solutions was here considered. A dynamic model was developed to simulate biosorption performances on the base of metal mass balances in the system considering biosorption as an equilibrium process. The effect of three Langmuir-type competitive models on dynamic simulations of biosorption was then studied by using predictive equilibrium models (whose adjustable parameters were determined only by single metal system biosorption data) and not predictive equilibrium models (adjustable parameters directly by binary biosorption data). Predictive competitive models can give simulation profiles that are different from those obtained using non-predictive models. This detachment is due to the non-ideal competition among metals in solution which cannot be predicted only on the base of biosorption data in single metal systems. The dynamic model for multi-component biosorption here proposed was compared with experimental results reported in the literature and obtained using a biomass in a similar membrane reactor apparatus with ternary metal systems. The simulated profiles (obtained by using predictive equilibrium models) can reproduce qualitatively the specific adsorbent selectivity and the overshoot regions in the permeate concentrations of the metals with the minor affinity.

A study on olive mill residues (OMR) as copper adsorbing material is reported in this work. A rough characterization of this waste material has been performed, by microanalysis and SEM pictures. Sorption tests with suspended OMR evidenced copper removal from solution, of about 60% in the investigated experimental conditions. The COD release in solution was also monitored during biosorption. Considering that it was significant, OMR washings with water were performed before biosorption. In this case the COD release in solution was reduced to less than 600 mg/L after two washings, while the OMR metal sorption properties did not change. Regenerated residues by acid solutions gave a copper removal of about 40%, in the same experimental conditions of the first adsorption test: regeneration with EDTA at different concentrations suggested that it presents a damage of adsorption active sites. On the other hand, the use of HCl and CaCl(2) led to completely regenerate the biosorbent material. Tests were also performed with a column filled with 80 g of OMR and the breakpoint was demonstrated to take place after that about 1L solution was treated in the investigated experimental conditions. Regeneration tests permitted to demonstrate that a concentration factor of about 2 can be obtained in no-optimized conditions, highlighting the possibility of using OMR for the treatment of metal bearing effluents. The main advantage of the process would be the "low cost" biosorbing material, considering that it represents a waste in the olive oil production.

Biosorption data of lead, copper, zinc and cadmium onto Sphaerotilus natans at different equilibrium pH (3-5 units) were here reported and analysed. Experimental results outlined the positive effect of pH increase on pollutant uptake and also the biomass affinity series (Pb > Cu > Zn > Cd) reflecting the hydrolytic properties of metals. An original empirical model was proposed to represent the effect of pH on heavy metal biosorption inserting q(max) vs. pH empirical functions into the classical Langmuir isotherm.

In the present paper, a study on laboratory scale to perform a treatment for valuable metals recovery from electronic and galvanic industrial wastes, is reported. The characterisation of the waste, performed by XRD, SEM, EDX and chemical analysis, showed a high metals content in the sludge, such as Cu, Ni, Mn, Pb, Sn, W. A leaching process, coupled by electrowinning, is then proposed in order to reduce the volume of the waste material and to recover selectively valuable metals, such as Cu and Ni. During the leaching step, carried out by using H(2)SO(4), several factors were investigated (acid concentration, temperature and time of treatment). The leached liquor has been successfully treated with an electrowinning process, to recover copper and nickel. The copper and nickel depositions, were performed in acid and alkaline conditions, respectively. The Faraday yield was of about 95%. The energy consumption was 2.13 and 4.43 kWh per kg of copper and nickel recovered, respectively. At the end of the process, about 94-99% of the initial content of Cu and Ni was recovered at the cathode. The experimental results obtained, showed the technical feasibility of the process.

In this paper a specially propagated biomass of Sphaerotilus natans was tested as adsorbent for binary solutions of Cu-Cd, Cu-Pb and Cu--Zn at different equilibrium pH. The experimental results outline the buffering effect of H+ at low pH. which masks the competition among metals. In each binary system the biomass affinity follows the acidic properties of the heavy metals probably due to an ionic exchange mechanism operating among active sites and metals in solution. The experimental results were fitted according to an empirical approach with growing complexity that outlines the inadequacy of the predictive models and the non-ideal interactions among metals.

In the present work desorption tests of an artificially contaminated soil by naphatelene sulphonated compounds have been carried out by soil washing realised by water at different pH: Naphtalene-1,5-disulfonic acid (1-5 NDS), 2-naphthol-6,8 disulphonic acid (G-acid) and sodium beta-naphtalene-sulphonate (beta-salt) have been selected as more representative organic compounds present in the ex industrial site of ACNA (Cengio, SV, Italy) in which very serious contamination levels of several pollutants are present both in the soils and surface waters. Equilibrium batch tests have been carried out in order to find the best operative condition in column washing tests. The obtained results can be considered very preliminary but useful to arrange a next experimental work that will be realised on real contaminated soils.

Biosorption of heavy metals is an innovative and alternative technology to remove these pollutants from aqueous solutions using inactive and dead biomasses such as agricultural and industrial wastes, algae and bacteria. In this study olive mill solid residue was used as heavy metal adsorbent material for its wide availability as agricultural waste and also for its cellulosic matrix, rich of potential metal binding active sites. Preliminary studies concerned with the removal of different heavy metals (Hg, Pb, Cu, Zn and Cd), the effect of pre-treatments by water and n-hexane and the regeneration possibility. Olive mill solid residue resulted able to remove heavy metals from aqueous solutions with an affinity series reflecting the hydrolytic properties of the metallic ions, but also a particular affinity for copper. It can be supposed that biosorption phenomenon occur by a general ion exchange mechanism combined with a specific complexation reaction for copper ions. Water pre-treatment is sufficient to reduce COD release in the effluent according to the law limit, while n-hexane pre-treatment strongly reduces also the adsorption properties of this material. Experimental isotherms obtained under different operating conditions were fitted using a non linear regression method for the estimation of the Langmuir parameters. Moreover a simple Scatchard plot analysis was performed for a preliminary investigation of the active sites, showing the presence of two different site affinities depending on the metal concentration, according to the previous hypothesis of two kinds of uptake mechanisms for copper biosorption. Regeneration tests gave good results in terms of yield of regeneration and also concentration ratios.
