Future population growth projections for the United Kingdom and its constituent countries are presented by using 2004 population census.

The 2003-based national population projections, carried out by the Government Actuary in consultation with the Registrars General show the population of the United Kingdom rising from 59.6 million in 2003 to reach 65.7 million by 2031. Some important findings indicate that population will gradually become older with the median age projected to rise from 38.4 years in 2003 to 43.3 years by 2031.

Results of a 2000 study aimed at projecting population growth in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, are presented, focusing on projections through 2025 but also including projections beyond that point. The results reveal the best way to estimate robust totals for people and households at Output Area level and using averages in a way for other population bases in the sets of tables is therefore recommended and can be applied to larger areas

A study discusses the methodology used to produce the final revised backseries for 1992-2000 published by Office for National Statistics (ONS) in October 2004 and summarizes the range of methods available describing the final method selected. The final method used is a cohort method weighted for migration by age and time with a period of adjustment at ages 18-19, combining best features from various methods applied locally and nationally to overcome small number effects.

A methodology used to create three sets of consistent areas through time (CATTs) that can be used for analyzing comparable small area data from 1981-2001 is presented.
