Larval Drosophila move up attractive chemical gradients, and down aversive ones. Although their movement is often characterized as a series of runs and directed turns, it can also be modeled as a continuous modulation of turning extent by the detected change in stimulus intensity as the animal moves through the gradient. We show that a neuromechanical model of peristaltic crawling and spontaneous bending in the larva can be adapted to produce taxis behavior by the simple addition of a local segmental reflex to modulate transverse viscosity (or "bendiness") proportionally to the intensity change detected in the head. Risso's dolphins are known for the persistency of their natural markings, possibly due to the loss of pigment during the healing process of skin wounds. Nonetheless, the actual longevity and reliability of each mark type has never been assessed. In this paper, we used photographs to investigate the etiology of skin marks in the species, analyze their distribution and temporal variability, and discuss implications for photo identification. Nineteen mark types were described on the dorsal fin of Risso's dolphin, including 2 new to the literature: the snakelike mark and the protruding fat. Longevity of skin marks ranged from 6 years for the protruding fat to several decades for scrapes and dots. Persistent and reliable marks were notch, tooth-rake, and thick single and parallel scrapes. Mark change was sufficiently low that all mark types could be used for photo identification, provided that backlit or underexposed images were discarded as photographs taken under suboptimal light conditions proved to be unreliable. Finally, mark distribution and variability were unequal between age classes; juveniles were less marked and showed a higher rate of mark change than older individuals so that, even if they possessed enough notches to be classified as reliably marked, they could be confidently matched over a time interval of up to 3 years. Toxocariasis is a parasitic disease caused by roundworms of cats and dogs. The disease is endemic throughout the United States and causes significant morbidity in children, including damage to the lungs, liver, or central nervous system, especially the eyes. Two well established clinical syndromes of disease include visceral and ocular toxocariasis. Symptoms of visceral toxocariasis include abdominal pain, cough, or wheezing. Vision loss or strabismus are common symptoms of ocular toxocariasis. Serologic testing for presence of Toxocara antibody is available, although a positive test result does not necessarily correlate with active clinical infection. Albendazole or mebendazole is the recommended treatment for visceral toxocariasis. Treatment options for ocular toxocariasis include corticosteroids or ophthalmic surgery; anthelminthic medications also may be used. Risk for toxocariasis can be reduced by handwashing after soil contact, routine pets deworming, discouraging geophagia, and appropriate disposal of pet feces. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Summary Freshwater fish, specifically loaches, are potential hosts of Gnathostoma species. Consumption of uncooked freshwater loaches may result in cutaneous larva migrans. We report the case of a 70-year-old Taiwanese man who presented with a serpiginous skin rash on his abdomen. He had eaten live loaches intermittently (sometimes daily) for 5 months before his presentation. On histopathological examination, a transected parasite body and a headbulb were found in the mid-dermis. The parasite was confirmed as belonging to the genus Gnathostoma, most likely Gnathostoma doloresi. The patient recovered uneventfully without treatment, and had no symptoms at his 12-month follow-up visit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: In developing countries, especially Latin America, neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a common cause of epilepsy. Recently, neurotoxocariasis has also been implicated in the pathogenesis of epilepsy. In sub-Saharan Africa data on parasitic disease and epilepsy are scarce. We therefore conducted a study in a rural hospital in northern Tanzania and analysed serum samples for anticysticercal and antitoxocaral antibodies for 40 people with epilepsy (PWE), 20 of whom had confirmed NCC on cranial computed tomography (CT) and 20 healthy individuals. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 11 PWE with NCC lesions on cranial CT was also investigated. Antibodies were determined using ELISA and Western blot. Six PWE with NCC lesions showed anticysticercal antibodies in serum. Of those, five had active lesions. Anticysticercal antibodies were significantly more frequent in PWE with active NCC than in those with inactive NCC (P <0.01). CSF samples were positive for anticysticercal antibodies in five patients, of whom four had active lesions on cranial CT. Antitoxocaral antibodies were detected in sera of 11 (55%) PWE with NCC lesions, of eight (40%) PWE without lesions on cranial CT and of eight (40%) controls. In our study anticysticercal antibodies in both serum and CSF were associated with active NCC in PWE, whereas there was no relationship between antitoxocaral antibodies and epilepsy. Background. Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) and tungiasis are commonly diagnosed in travelers returning from endemic areas, but reliable data on disease occurrence do not exist. To describe the occurrence of CLM and tungiasis in international travelers, a cross-sectional study was done. Method. We conducted an airport survey in European travelers exiting northeast Brazil. Questionnaires were distributed at the departure gate of the international airport of Fortaleza (Ceará State) while passengers were waiting to board their plane. The questionnaire included questions on personal characteristics, pretravel health advice, acquired parasitic skin diseases during their stay in Brazil, and clinical characteristics of the infestation. To help identify CLM and tungiasis, photographs of the typical appearances of the infestations were presented. Results. Data from 372 tourists (aged 16–76 y, median = 40 y) were available for analysis; 45% had obtained pretravel health advice, usually from travel clinics (46.2%) and Internet sites (39.6%). Only 14% of those who obtained advice had been informed about CLM as a travel health risk and 22% about tungiasis. During their stay in Brazil, 12 (3.2%) tourists had experienced tungiasis and 3 (0.8%) CLM. In all cases, lesions were confined to the feet. The three travelers with CLM complained of irritability; itching was present in two cases. Pain (58.3%) and itching (50%) were the most common symptoms in travelers with tungiasis. The length of stay was a clear predictor for tungiasis, with a 20 times higher occurrence in travelers who had stayed for more than 4 weeks in Brazil. Conclusions. Tungiasis and CLM are not rare in international tourists departing from Brazil, and pretravel counseling is insufficient. Pretravel health advice should include information on the risk of acquiring tungiasis and CLM and how to prevent an infestation. Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of toxocariasis in adult asthmatics and to assess its relationship with risk factors. A total of 124 asthmatic and 60 control group subjects were included in the study. Of the asthmatic patients, 61 (49.2%) were atopic and 63 non-atopic (50.8%). The anti-Toxocara IgG (Toxocara IgG CELISA Cellabs, Australia) positivity rate for all asthmatic cases was 9.7%. There was no significant difference between the asthmatic cases and the control group regarding anti-Toxocara IgG positivity (P >0.05). When risk factors were analyzed, there was a statistically significant difference between the control group subjects and patients with non-atopic asthma and also between the atopic asthmatic patients and the patients with non-atopic asthma regarding pets being under veterinary control (P <0.05). The percentages of those who had their pets defecate indoors were 0, 15 and 8.6%, respectively, for the control subjects, patients with non-atopic asthma and those with atopic asthma. Background. Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a common but neglected parasitic skin disease in impoverished communities of the developing world. Methods. To describe the clinical features and the morbidity associated with CLM, active-case finding was performed during rainy and dry seasons in a rural community in the state of Alagoas, Northeast Brazil. Results. A total of 62 individuals received a diagnosis for CLM, and among them there were a total of 75 larval tracks. The number of tracks per person ranged from 1 to 3. Children !9 years old were affected significantly more often than other age groups (P < .001). Children had their lesions mainly on the buttocks, genitals, and hands, whereas in older patients, the majority of lesions were located on the feet. Twenty-four percent of the 75 lesions were superinfected. Bacterial superinfection was more common among children. All but 1 patient complained about itching, and 84% of the 62 patients complained about sleep disturbances. Itching was classified as being severe by 61% of patients. Approximately 40% of the 62 patients had attempted to treat their creeping eruption previously. Larvae moved forward 2.7 mm per day. There was a significant correlation between the length of the track and the duration of infestation (ρ = .53; P < .0001). Conclusions. CLM is a common parasitic skin disease in this rural community, with different topographic patterns of lesions in children and adults. CLM is associated with considerable morbidity. Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a frequent cutaneous disease among travelers returning from the tropics. It can be misdiagnosed or treated incorrectly. We present a 42-year-old French patient who contracted the disease during a holiday in Thailand and who experienced an extensive CLM syndrome with a less frequent abdominal localization and a pseudo-multimetameric homolateral topography. The condition was late diagnosed and secondarily efficiently cured by a unique administration of ivermectin. Simple anamnestic information—often revealing beach activities—and clinical aspect of the creeping eruption allow to prevent diagnosis delay and to avoid aggressive or inadequate intervention. Ocular toxocariasis in humans is typically a unilateral disease caused by second-stage larvae of the Toxocara species. Serological evidence of widespread infection in humans provides little information on clinical disease. There is only a single previous estimate of the prevalence of ocular toxocariasis (from Alabama). The present survey examined the extent of consultant-diagnosed toxocaral eye disease among a population of schoolchildren. More than 120,000 participants were surveyed by questionnaire and follow-up. Two sets of control subjects from the same school and from the same county were compared with persons who had ocular toxocariasis. The prevalence of consultant-diagnosed toxocaral eye disease was 6.6 cases per 100,000 persons when only cases regarded as definite by the consultant ophthalmologist were included. This increased to 9.7 cases per 100,000 persons when both definite and strongly suspected cases were included. Background Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is the result of a nematode infection, and shows a characteristic creeping eruption. As travel to the tropics increases, many British citizens may be returning with this infection, which is often misdiagnosed or treated incorrectly. Objectives To perform a retrospective survey of 44 cases of CLM presenting to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in London over the last 2 years. Methods Cases were reviewed with regard to patient characteristics, source of infection, source of referral, clinical features and therapy. Results Most infections were acquired in Africa (32%), the Caribbean (30%) and South-east Asia (25%), but also in Central and South America. There was a history of exposure to a beach in 95% of patients and the median duration of symptoms was 8 weeks (range 1–104). Lesions mainly affected the feet (39%), buttocks (18%) and abdomen (16%), but the lower leg, arm and face were also affected. Multiple lesions were seen in seven of 44 cases (16%). Laboratory abnormalities were absent in all patients. Of 44 patients seen, four needed no treatment, 28 were cured by a single course of treatment, 11 required a second course of therapy and one patient was treated three times. Thirty-one patients received oral albendazole 400 mg daily for 3–5 days and 24 were cured (77%). Five patients received 10% thiabendazole cream topically for 10 days and four were cured (80%). Four patients received oral thiabendazole 1·5 g daily for 3 days and all required further therapy. Conclusions In view of the range of treatment regimens recorded, a randomized controlled trial comparing topical and systemic therapies is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports that it was possible to detect in the sera of patients, for whom visceral larva migrans had been confirmed histologically, not only antibodies to the excretory-secretory antigens of Toxocara canis by means of fluorescence techniques, but also specific homocytotropic antibody measured by passive cutaneous anaphylactic tests in baboons and monkeys. There is ample evidence that the basis for making a diagnosis of visceral larva migrans requires further investigation, and that the problem, as with the immunodiagnosis of all nematodiases depends ideally on the isolation and detection of a species specific nematode antigen/allergen to demonstrate the presence of correspondingly specific antibody.

Summary: Cutaneous larva migrans is a common parasitic skin disease that can be easily prevented by wearing ‘protective’ footwear. However, this has been under-emphasized in terms of what constitutes the protective footwear. Even though the disease resolves spontaneously, the significant duration of the disease along with severity of pruritus make treatment unavoidable. Here, we present a very long-standing creeping eruption, which puzzled many attending clinicians handling the case, and the possibility of long socks as a causal effect on the development of cutaneous larva migrans infection. He highlights ascariasis, toxocariasis, strongyloidiasis, and cysticercosis as the common human worm infections that affect the poorest citizens in the country. Hotez also points that these types of human worm infections may cause hyperimmune reaction, mental retardation, and deafness.
