The first marine circulus is the scale feature associated with marine entry and has been used to support research evaluating the relationships between size, growth, and survival for Atlantic salmon. Ambiguity in growth rates and circulus deposition during the transition from freshwater to the marine environment leads to difficulty in the correct identification of the first marine circulus. In this study, scale growth occurring after the last freshwater annulus (plus-growth) was characterized for Atlantic salmon smolts migrating out of the Narraguagus River in Maine. Plus-growth was present in over 95% of scales from smolts leaving the river and represented on average 12.2% of total freshwater growth. These findings suggest plus-growth presents a significant source of error in growth analyses, if ignored, and the characterization of this scale feature helps to inform accurate identification of marine entry for future studies. Run day was a driver of plus-growth, suggesting extended freshwater residency provides opportunity for growth prior to smolt emigration. The negative association between fork length and plus-growth suggests smaller smolts that delay migration are demonstrating compensatory growth. Cumulative air temperature was positively associated with plus-growth, suggesting warming spring temperatures driven by climate change may influence size at marine entry for smolts. The productivity of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) has declined markedly since the 1980s,  in part because of changing ocean conditions, but mechanisms driving this decline remain unclear. Previous research has suggested differential recruitment dynamics between the continental stock groups, with post-smolt growth influencing the survival of populations in Europe, but not North America. We used a large, representative archive of North American, multi sea-winter salmon scales to reconstruct long-term changes in growth between 1968 and 2018. We then modeled relationships between annual growth indices, estimates of maturation rates, and post-smolt survival, while allowing for the possibility of non-stationary dynamics. We found that marine growth of MSW salmon has changed over the past 50 years, generally increasing despite declining survival. However, we found strong evidence of a non-stationary influence of post-smolt growth on survival. Prior to a period of rapid change in the ocean environment during the late 1980s,  post-smolt growth was positively related with survival, similar to the pattern observed in European populations. These findings suggest that the mechanisms determining marine survival of North American and European salmon populations may have diverged around 1990. More generally, our results highlight the importance of considering non-stationary dynamics when evaluating linkages between the environment, growth, and survival of Atlantic salmon. The West Greenland Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) fishery represents the largest remaining mixed-stock fishery for Atlantic Salmon in the Northwest Atlantic and targets multi-sea-winter (MSW) salmon from throughout North America and Europe. We evaluated stock composition of salmon harvested in the waters off West Greenland (n = 5684 individuals) using genetic mixture analysis and individual assignment to inform conservation of North American populations, many of which are failing to meet management targets. Regional contributions to this fishery were estimated using 2169 individuals sampled throughout the fishery between 2011 and 2014. Of these,22% were identified as European in origin. Major North American contributions were detected from Labrador (20%), the Southern Gulf/Cape Breton (29%), and the Gaspe Peninsula (29%). Minor contributions (5%) were detected from Newfoundland, Ungava, and Quebec regions. Region-specific catches were extrapolated using estimates of composition and fishery catch logs and harvests ranged from 300 to 600 and 2000 to 3000 individuals for minor and major constituents, respectively. To evaluate the temporal stability of the observed fishery composition, we extended the temporal coverage through the inclusion of previously published data (1995-2006, n = 3095) and data from archived scales (1968-1998, n = 420). Examination of the complete time-series (47 years) suggests relative stability in stock proportions since the late 1980s. Genetic estimates of stock composition were significantly associated with model-based estimates of returning MSW salmon (individual years r = 0.69, and overall mean r = 0.96). This work demonstrates that the analysis of both contemporary and archived samples in a mixed-stock context can disentangle levels of regional exploitation and directly inform assessment and conservation of Atlantic Salmon in the West Greenland interceptory Atlantic Salmon fishery. Dams are a major contributor to the historic decline and current low abundance of diadromous fish. We developed a population viability analysis to assess demographic effects of dams on diadromous fish within a river system and demonstrated an application of the model with Atlantic salmon in the Penobscot River, Maine. We used abundance and distribution of wild- and hatchery-origin adult salmon throughout the watershed as performance metrics. Salmon abundance, distribution to upper reaches of the Penobscot watershed, and the number and proportion of wild-origin fish in the upper reaches of the Penobscot watershed increased when dams, particularly mainstem dams, were removed or passage efficiency was increased. Salmon abundance decreased as indirect latent mortality per dam was increased. Salmon abundance increased as marine or freshwater survival rates were increased, but the increase in abundance was larger when marine survival was increased than when freshwater survival was increased. Without hatchery supplementation, salmon abundance equalled zero with low marine and freshwater survival but increased when marine and freshwater survival rates were increased. Models, such as this one, that incorporate biological, environmental, and functional parameters can be used to predict ecological responses of fish populations and can help evaluate and prioritize management and restoration actions for diadromous fish. Otolith-derived estimates of mean marine temperatures used by West Greenland 1SW Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) of North American origin were determined for fish collected in 2009 and 2010. Otolith material corresponding to the second summer at sea was subsampled, via micromilling, and analysed by mass spectrometry to produce stable oxygen isotope (δ18O) values from which temperature use estimates were obtained from a salmonid-based fractionation equation. Mean temperature estimates did not differ significantly by period (early vs. late summer), or capture year. The mean and variation estimates were also consistent with temperature use values previously published in the literature or derived from the limited number of data storage tags that have been retrieved for Atlantic salmon, with 80% of all individuals occupying temperatures in the 3.9-9.78°C range. Among-individual differences in temperature use did not correlate with measured otolith growth zone widths. Given the temporal, spatial and methodological variation associated with the derivation of marine temperature use estimates for Atlantic salmon, the data were interpreted to define a range of preferred temperatures within which among-individual differences in growth were driven by the interaction of feeding and temperature use, possibly as a result of the opportunistic feeding behaviour known to predominate among Atlantic salmon. Revisiting the marine migration of US Atlantic salmon using historical Carlin tag data. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 69: 1609–1615.The development of a fishery for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in the sea at West Greenland in the early 1960s prompted the start of a US tagging programme in 1962. Between 1962 and 1996, more than 1.5 million salmon from New England rivers, primarily hatchery-reared smolts, were tagged and released. Overall, the rate of tag recovery was 0.55%, with 23.2% of the tags recovered from Canada, 26.0% from Greenland, and 50.8% from the United States. A generalized additive model was used to analyse marine survival based on returns of tagged salmon to the Penobscot River. The month and year of release, sea age, smolt age, and environmental variables, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) indices and local sea surface temperatures (SSTs), were assessed to explain the variability in the return rate. The AMO and NAO indices, SST, sea age, and time across years all affected survival assessed in terms of returns to the Penobscot River. SALSEA North America: a pelagic ecosystem survey targeting Atlantic salmon in the Northwest Atlantic. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 69: 1580–1588.Pelagic ecosystem surveys were conducted in the Labrador Sea during 2008 and 2009 as part of SALSEA North America. In total, 107 Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) were captured using a pelagic surface trawl and multipanel surface gillnets. Surface trawling provided a broad spatial sampling of the fish and macroinvertebrate communities in the upper 10 m of the water column, but caught few salmon (23). Gillnetting was more effective at capturing post-smolt (60) and adult (24) salmon. Multiple smolt cohorts were captured, indicating that post-smolts and returning adults from different rivers in North America have similar autumnal habitat requirements. Post-smolts were caught at night and in water temperatures exceeding 10°C, both novel results. Post-smolts and adults consumed similar and diverse prey species, although Themisto compressa was the most important prey item. Intestinal macroparasite loads were substantial and could be a significant source of mortality. Concurrent planktonic assemblage and oceanographic conditions were also quantified. A full exploration of these data, historical datasets, and parallel data collected during SALSEA Greenland and SALSEA-Merge will further understanding of the ecology of marine-phase Atlantic salmon and inform investigations into stock-specific differences in marine productivity. Salmon are opportunistic feeders that are likely to be affected by the quality and quantity of prey available. During the marine phase, salmon often target larger zooplankton and fish, with a preference for fish over crustaceans. European salmon recruitment appears to be linked to forage abundance, which affects post-smolt growth critically during the first summer at sea, but similar linkages have not been shown for North American populations. Here, trophic differences within and among populations and life stages of Atlantic salmon during the freshwater and marine life-history phases are investigated. Stable isotope methods were used to characterize trophic dynamics by sampling smolts and returning adult survivors from rivers spanning a broad geographic range in Canada (southern Labrador to the Bay of Fundy), as well as non-maturing salmon sampled at West Greenland. Analyses indicate that salmon undergo a marked change in feeding as they migrate from freshwater and show the expected high reliance on pelagic foodwebs in the marine environment. Documented changes in ocean climate, pH, and the possibility of regime shifts are likely to have significant impacts on pelagic feeding fish, including Atlantic salmon. Due to the similar marine feeding ecology suggested here for adults from different age groups, these changes could have a widespread effect on multiple life-history stages of Atlantic salmon. Distribution and biological characteristics of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) at Greenland based on the analysis of historical tag recoveries. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 69: 1589–1597.In this study, we examined 5481 records of tag recoveries at Greenland from a new tagging database held by ICES that contains information on salmon tagged in Canada, France, Faroes, Greenland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Spain, the UK (Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, and Wales), and the United States from the early 1960s to the present. For 4806 of the tag recoveries, latitude and longitude information were available, describing, to varying degrees of accuracy, the location of recovery of tagged fish. Release and recovery dates were variable, but no significant differences over time were noted. The information derived from tag recoveries was used to describe the distribution and growth of salmon of different origins. The proportion of recoveries from East Greenland suggested that potential multi-sea-winter salmon from northern Europe have a more easterly distribution than those from southern Europe. The location of recovery of salmon of North American origin differed from that of European salmon along the west coast of Greenland. Tag recoveries by country were not uniformly distributed across the respective NAFO Divisions. Tags from salmon originating in Canada and the United States were more commonly recovered in northern locations than tags from European-origin salmon. Analysis of rates of tag recovery suggested similar rates before and after the introduction of the NASCO Tag Return Incentive Scheme. The straight-line migration speed of both North American and European salmon changed very little over the time-series, but was ∼40% greater for North American salmon (0.43 m s−1) than for European salmon (0.29–0.32 m s−1). Objectives. To develop a method of scoring bone erosion in the feet of patients with gout using CT as an outcome measure for chronic gout studies, consistent with the components of the OMERACT filter.Methods. Clinical assessment, plain radiographs and CT scans of both feet were obtained from 25 patients with chronic gout. CT scans were scored for bone erosion using a semi-quantitative method based on the Rheumatoid Arthritis MRI Scoring System (RAMRIS). CT bone erosion was assessed at 22 bones in each foot (total 1100 bones) by two independent radiologists. A number of different models were assessed to determine the optimal CT scoring system for bone erosion, incorporating the frequency of involvement and inter-reader reliability for individual bones.Results. An optimal model was identified with low number of bones required for scoring (seven bones/foot), inclusion of bones over the entire foot, high reliability and ability to capture a high proportion of disease. This model included the following bones in each foot: first metatarsal (MT) head, second to fourth MT base, cuboid, middle cuneiform and distal tibia (range 0–140). Scores from this model correlated with plain radiographic damage scores (r = 0.86, P < 0.0001) and disease duration (r = 0.42, P < 0.05). Scores were higher in those with clinically apparent tophaceous disease than in those without tophi (P < 0.0001).Conclusions. We have developed a preliminary method of assessing bone erosion in gout using conventional CT. Annual landings peaked in 1971 at 2700 t, but declined to 22 t in 2003. Biological data are collected to characterize the catch and its stock composition. Multilocus genotypes, generated via microsatellite DNA analysis, are used to derive statistics on continent of origin and less accurate finer-scale assignments. We developed a probabilistic-based genetic assignment (PGA) model to estimate the contribution of salmon from individual North American rivers in the 2000–2003 West Greenland catch. Uncertainty associated with finer-scale assignments is addressed by incorporating estimated misclassification rates and by reporting results as distributions generated via Monte Carlo resampling. US-origin fish represented ∼1% (by number) of the salmon harvested at West Greenland during the years 2000–2003. The resulting loss of spawners to this stock complex was approximately half the estimated adult returns in 2001, but was below 4% in the other 3 years. This is the first attempt to partition the US component of the West Greenland mixed-stock fishery to its finer parts.
