This essay discusses diarist and collector Pierre de Estoile of Paris, France, focusing on how his collecting activities of ephemeral print and print culture of the French Wars of Religion exemplified record keeping in the early modern period. He created a scrapbook he entitled "Drolleries of the League" which featured printed works created between the 1585 treaty of Péronne until the 1598 Edict of Nantes, which declared that all records of the wars should be destroyed and erased.

This chapter deals with three trends in academic writing on popular culture and is divided into three sections: 1. TV: New Media, Digital Technology and the Archive; 2. Gender and Popular Culture; 3. The Popular Cultural Text. The first section examines a number of texts which analyse the impact of digital and other new technologies on our consumption of popular culture, the role of those technologies in evolving industry practices, and on our awareness of the history of the media. The second looks at a series of texts which examine representations of gender in popular culture (demonstrating, in passing, the sheer persistence of the term post-feminism, and the continuing need to subject it to rigorous critical analysis). Ulysses contains over 130 locutions from the Oxford Dictionary of English Proverbs, but this abundance of proverbial sayings and familiar sayings has received relatively little direct critical attention. This essay examines the importance of proverbs to Ulysses, paying particular attention to Joyce's repeated habit of varying or adapting the form of the proverbs he quotes. These alterations have, it is argued, significant implications for our understanding of the proverb as a form and Ulysses itself. By misquoting and misattributing proverbs from a variety of literary and non-literary sources, Joyce raises important questions about linguistic agency, about the distinctions between high literature and low popular culture and about the politics of literature in Ireland. The authorship of proverbs, their relation to individual utterance and collective wisdom is shown to be as complex and richly ambiguous as Joyce's stylistic achievement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article investigates how psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud conferred important rational status to dreams and broke in tradition by eliminating the interpretation of dreams from its place in the private culture of women. It presents a background of the popularity of dream books in Europe, which were aimed at women readers forming a significant party of women's popular culture in Great Britain towards the end of the 19th century. The article also explores the practical reasons for women's interest in books of fate.

The article discusses how the Elizabethan play "Tamburlaine," by Christopher Marlowe, influenced Jacobean popular culture by focusing on two broadside ballads. The ballads are part of the Pepys Collection at Magdalene College, Cambridge University, and are the 1612 "Saint Georges commendation to all Souldiers" and the c. 1626 "A brave warlike Song," both published in London, England. The author argues that the ballads reflect British print culture's fascination with militarism by their representation of the historic Tamburlaine, also known as Timur, founder of the Timurid Empire, as an English hero.
