Objective To summarize findings from qualitative studies on factors associated with smoking cessation among adolescents and young adults. Data sources We searched Pubmed, Psychinfo, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science, and SCOPUS databases, as well as reference lists, for peer-reviewed articles published in English or French between January 1, 2000, and November 18, 2020. We used keywords such as adolescents, determinants, cessation, smoking, and qualitative methods. Study selection Of 1724 records identified, we included 39 articles that used qualitative or mixed methods, targeted adolescents and young adults aged 10–24, and aimed to identify factors associated with smoking cessation or smoking reduction. Data extraction Two authors independently extracted the data using a standardized form. We assessed study quality using the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence checklist for qualitative studies. Data synthesis We used an aggregative meta-synthesis approach and identified 39 conceptually distinct factors associated with smoking cessation. We grouped them into two categories: (1) environmental factors [tobacco control policies, pro-smoking norms, smoking cessation services and interventions, influence of friends and family], and (2) individual attributes (psychological characteristics, attitudes, pre-quitting smoking behavior, nicotine dependence symptoms, and other substances use). We developed a synthetic framework that captured the factors identified, the links that connect them, and their associations with smoking cessation. Conclusions This qualitative synthesis offers new insights on factors related to smoking cessation services, interventions, and attitudes about cessation (embarrassment when using cessation services) not reported in quantitative reviews, supplementing limited evidence for developing cessation programs for young persons who smoke. Implications Using an aggregative meta-synthesis approach, this study identified 39 conceptually distinct factors grouped into two categories: Environmental factors and individual attributes. These findings highlight the importance of considering both environmental and individual factors when developing smoking cessation programs for young persons who smoke. The study also sheds light on self-conscious emotions towards cessation, such as embarrassment when using cessation services, which are often overlooked in quantitative reviews. Introduction: In addition to individual-level characteristics, the social and physical environment may influence the initiation of cigarette smoking in adolescents. The objective of this paper is to describe the association between smoking intolerance in schools, and in restaurants and corner stores located near schools, and initiation of cigarette smoking among adolescents. Methods: Data on cigarette smoking were collected in self-report questionnaires every 3 months from 1999 to 2005 in a sample of 1,293 Grade 7 students in 10 secondary schools in Montreal, Canada. Baseline never-smokers (n = 868) were retained for analysis. School administrators completed questionnaires on tobacco control policies and activities within schools. Data on access to tobacco products and smoking restrictions in restaurants and corner stores located in school neighborhoods were collected through direct observation. Schools, restaurants, and corner stores were classified as smoking tolerant or intolerant. Time to initiation of cigarette smoking was modeled as a function of smoking intolerance in schools, restaurants, and corner stores in survival analyses (Cox proportional hazards modeling). Results: Students in smoking-intolerant schools were less likely to initiate smoking than students in smoking-tolerant schools (hazard ratio [HR; 95% CI] = 0.83 [0.68, 1.01]). Students attending schools located in neighborhoods with smoking-intolerant restaurants were less likely to initiate smoking (HR [95% CI] = 0.85 [0.68, 1.07]). There was no association between corner store smoking intolerance and initiation. Conclusions: Smoking intolerance in schools and restaurants may protect against initiation of cigarette smoking and could be useful targets for more intense tobacco control efforts. The effect of screen time during secondary school on percent body fat was examined in a cohort of 744 Canadian adolescents aged 12–13 years at baseline. Participants completed self-reported questionnaires on television viewing and computer use in 19 survey cycles over 57 months from 1999 to 2005. Triceps skinfold thickness and subscapular skinfold thickness were measured in survey cycles 1 and 19. Four screen-time trajectory groups identified in growth mixture modeling included steady-low screen time (73% of the sample), steady-high (10%), increasers (9%), and decreasers (8%). The effect of screen-time trajectory on percent body fat at survey cycle 19 was modeled in boys and girls separately by using linear regression, adjusting for baseline percent body fat and physical activity. Relative to that of steady-low screen-time trajectory group boys, percent body fat was 2.9 (95% confidence interval: 0.7, 5.0) and 2.4 (95% confidence interval: 0.5, 4.2) percentage units higher on average among “increasers” and “steady-high” trajectory group boys, respectively. There was no evidence that screen time has an effect on percent body fat in girls overall, although physical activity modified the association between screen time and percent body fat in both sexes. Background: There are no national data on levels of organizational capacity within the Canadian public health system to reduce the burden of chronic disease. Methods: Cross-sectional data were collected in a national survey (October 2004 to April 2005) of all 216 national, provincial and regional-level organizations engaged in chronic disease prevention through primary prevention or healthy lifestyle promotion. Levels of organizational capacity (defined as skills and resources to implement chronic disease prevention programmes), potential determinants of organizational capacity and involvement in chronic disease prevention programming were compared in western, central and eastern Canada and across three types of organizations (formal public health organizations, non-governmental organizations and grouped organizations). Results: Forty percent of organizations were located in Central Canada. Approximately 50% were formal public health organizations. Levels of skill and involvement were highest for activities that addressed tobacco control and healthy eating; lowest for stress management, social determinants of health and programme evaluation. The few notable differences in skill levels by provincial grouping favoured Central Canada. Resource adequacy was rated low across the country; but was lowest in eastern Canada and among formal public health organizations. Determinants of organizational capacity (organizational supports and partnerships) were highest in central Canada and among grouped organizations. Conclusion: These data provide an evidence base to identify strengths and gaps in organizational capacity and involvement in chronic disease prevention programming in the organizations that comprise the Canadian public health system. The authors examined the potential association between changes in the number of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) sessions per week, adiposity, and systolic blood pressure (SBP) during adolescence. SBP and anthropometric factors were assessed biannually (1999/2000, 2002, and 2004) in a cohort of 1,293 Canadian adolescents aged 12–13 years in 1999. Self-reported 7-day recall data on MVPA sessions ≥5 minutes in duration were collected every 3 months over the 5-year period. Estimates of initial level and rate of decline in number of MVPA sessions per week from individual growth models were used as predictors of SBP in linear regression models. A decline of 1 MVPA session per week with each year of age was associated with 0.29-mm Hg and 0.19-mm Hg higher SBPs in girls and boys, respectively, in early adolescence (ages 12.8–15.1 years) and 0.40-mm Hg and 0.18-mm Hg higher SBPs, respectively, in late adolescence (ages 15.2–17.0 years). The associations were not attenuated by changes in body mass index, waist circumference, or skinfold thickness in girls during late adolescence. Although weaker, associations were evident in boys during late adolescence, as well as in both girls and boys during early adolescence. Few prospective studies of smoking initiation have investigated a wide range of time-varying and invariant predictor variables at the individual and contextual levels concurrently. In this study (1999–2005), 877 Canadian students (mean age = 12.7 years) who had never smoked at baseline completed self-report questionnaires on cigarette smoking and 32 predictor variables in 20 survey cycles during secondary school. Height and weight were measured in survey cycles 1, 12, and 19. School administrators completed questionnaires on school tobacco control policies/activities, and trained observers collected data on access to tobacco products in commercial establishments near schools. Younger age, single-parent family status, smoking by parents, siblings, friends, and school staff, stress, impulsivity, lower self-esteem, feeling a need to smoke, not doing well at school, susceptibility to tobacco advertising, alcohol use, use of other tobacco products, and attending a smoking-tolerant school were independent determinants of smoking initiation. Independent determinants of daily smoking onset among initiators of nondaily smoking included smoking by siblings and friends, feeling a need to smoke, susceptibility to tobacco advertising, use of other tobacco products, and self-perceived mental and physical addiction. Adolescent tobacco control programs should address multiple individual and contextual-level risk factors. Although related to inflammatory markers in adults, little is known about the association between cigarette smoking and C-reactive protein (CRP) in adolescent smokers. We examined the association between high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) concentrations and smoking in youth. We used data from a cross-sectional, province-wide survey of a representative sample of youth conducted in Quebec, Canada, in 1999. Data were collected in self-report questionnaires completed by participants and their parents. Participants provided a fasting blood sample, and anthropometric measures were undertaken by trained technicians. The present analysis pertains to 1,501 adolescents aged 13 and 16 years who completed questionnaires and for whom blood samples were available. The independent association between a six-category indicator of smoking status and elevated hs-CRP, defined as a value at least in the 90th percentile of the age- and sex-specific CRP distribution, was assessed in multiple logistic regression analyses controlling for potential confounders. Relative to never-smokers, the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for puffers (i.e., never smoked a whole cigarette), those who smoked but not in the past month, light past-month smokers, moderate past-month smokers, and heavy past-month smokers were 1.04 (0.55-1.98), 1.76 (1.06-2.94), 1.39 (0.70-2.76), 2.07 (0.96-4.42), and 2.40 (1.18-4.88), respectively. Our data suggest a positive association between smoking status and elevated CRP in adolescents, and in particular among heavier past-month smokers. The aims were to explore adolescent smokers' understanding and their physiological and psychological experience of addiction to nicotine and to assess the content validity of the Hooked on Nicotine Checklist (HONC), a 10-item measure of nicotine dependence in youth. Six focus group interviews were conducted with male and female smokers recruited by school staff from among known smokers at one English and two French high schools in Montreal. Participants were 64 high-school students aged 14–17 years. Measurements were focus group discussion of smoking patterns and levels for self and others; feelings and sensations while smoking; physical and mental experiences of urges, feelings and sensations when smoking is prohibited; the physical, psychological, and social meanings of being hooked, dependent, or addicted; levels of dependence, desire to quit, and quit attempts. Participants readily identified nicotine dependence as relevant to their smoking experience. Dependence was described as the need to smoke, sometimes experienced as sensations of emptiness in the chest or blood and sometimes as a feeling in the mind. Smoking urges were often situationally determined and associated with hunger. With the exception of feeling sad, blue, or depressed on smoking withdrawal, participants endorsed almost all the symptoms in the HONC as relevant to their experience of dependence and identified several other symptoms as well. Adolescents are able to provide self-reports of symptoms of dependence that are consistent with a theoretically driven conceptualization of nicotine dependence. The HONC demonstrates content validity among adolescents but could be improved through removal of the item related to depression on withdrawal and possibly addition of items related to stress and appetite. Time-varying confounding is a common challenge for causal inference in observational studies with time-varying treatments, long follow-up periods, and participant dropout. Confounder adjustment using traditional approaches can be limited by data sparsity, weight instability, and computational issues. The Nicotine Dependence in Teens Study is a prospective cohort study, and we used data from 21 data collection cycles carried out from 1999 to 2008 among 1294 students recruited from 10 high schools in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, including follow-up into adulthood. Our aim in this study was to estimate associations of timing of alcohol initiation and cumulative duration of alcohol use with depression symptoms in adulthood. Based on the target trials framework, we defined intention-to-treat and as-treated parameters in a marginal structural model with sex as a potential effect-modifier. We then used the observational data to emulate the trials. For estimation, we used pooled longitudinal target maximum likelihood estimation, a plug-in estimator with double-robust and local efficiency properties. We describe strategies for dealing with high-dimensional potential drinking patterns and practical positivity violations due to a long follow-up time, including modifying the effect of interest by removing sparsely observed drinking patterns from the loss function and applying longitudinal modified treatment policies to represent the effect of discouraging drinking. Introduction: The objective was to determine if there is effect modification by home smoking bans in the association between parental smoking and cigarette smoking onset in children. Methods: Data on smoking onset, number of parents who smoke, and home smoking rules were collected from children who had never smoked in self-report questionnaires in Grades 5, 7, 9, and 11. The association between number of parents who smoke and smoking onset in children was tested in pooled logistic regression in 2 groups defined by the presence or absence of a complete home smoking ban. Results: In homes without a complete ban and relative to participants with no parents who smoke, the odds ratio (95% confidence interval [OR (95% CI]) for smoking onset was 1.5 (1.1–1.9) when one parent smoked and 1.4 (1.0–2.1) when both parents smoked. In homes with a complete ban, the OR (95% CI) was 1.6 (1.1–2.3) if one parent smoked, but 4.9 (2.4–9.9) if both parents smoked. Conclusion: The association between number of parents who smoke and smoking onset in children was modified by the presence of a complete home smoking ban. In homes with a complete smoking ban in which both parent smoke, it may be prudent that parents communicate clearly with their children about their reasons for implementing the ban, as well as about their reasons for continuing to smoke. Introduction: Most studies modeling adolescent cigarette smoking trajectories use age as the time axis, possibly obscuring depiction of the natural course of cigarette smoking. We used a simulated example and real data to contrast smoking trajectories obtained from models that used time since smoking onset or calendar time (age) as the time axis.Methods: Data were drawn from a longitudinal investigation of 1293 grade 7 students (mean age 12.8 years) recruited from 10 high schools in Montreal, Canada in 1999-2000, who were followed into young adulthood. Cigarette consumption was measured every 3 months during high school, and again at mean ages 20.4 and 24.0. Analyses using time since onset of smoking as the time metric was restricted to 307 incident smokers; analysis using calendar time included 645 prevalent and incident smokers. Smoking status and nicotine dependence (ND) were assessed at mean ages 20.4 and 24.0. Simulated data mimicked the real study during high school.Results: Use of different time metrics resulted in different numbers and shapes of trajectories in the simulated and real datasets. Participants in the calendar time analyses reported more ND in young adulthood, reflecting inclusion of 388 prevalent smokers who had smoked for longer durations.Conclusions: Choosing the right time metric for trajectory analysis should be balanced against research intent. Trajectory analyses using the time since onset metric depict the natural course of smoking in incident smokers. Those using calendar time offer a snapshot of smoking across ages during a given time period.Implications: This study uses simulated and real data to show that trajectory analyses of cigarette smoking that use calendar time (e.g., age) versus time since onset as the time axis metric tell a different story. Availability of health-promoting interventions (HPIs) may vary across schools serving students with different socioeconomic backgrounds. Our objectives were to describe social inequalities across elementary schools in: (i) level of importance that school principals attribute to 13 common health-related issues among students in their school; (ii) availability of HPIs within their school addressing eight health topics and (iii) (mis)alignment between perceived importance and HPI availability. Data were collected in telephone interviews with school principals in a convenience sample of 171 elementary schools (59% of 291 schools contacted). Schools were categorized as serving very advantaged, moderately advantaged or disadvantaged students. Principals reported how important 13 health issues were among students in their schools and provided data on HPI availability for 8 health issues, 4 of which required school action under government mandates. Higher proportions of principals in schools serving disadvantaged students (36% of all 171 schools) perceived most health issues as important. The mean number of HPIs in the past year was 12.0, 12.1 and 11.7 in schools serving very advantaged, moderately advantaged and disadvantaged students, respectively. Only availability of mental health HPIs differed by school deprivation (60, 43 and 30% in very, moderately and disadvantaged, respectively). Although most schools offered oral health HPIs, dental problems were not perceived as important. Smoking was perceived as not important and smoking-related HPIs were relatively rare (9%). Given rapid evolution in public health priorities, (mis)alignment between perceived importance of specific health issues and HPI availability in elementary schools warrants ongoing reflection. Introduction: To determine if smoking cessation counseling practices and related psychosocial characteristics improved among pharmacists between 2005 and 2010. Methods: Data were collected in 2005 and 2010 from randomly selected pharmacists in Québec, Canada. Participants completed mailed self-report questionnaires on cessation counseling practices and psychosocial characteristics (i.e., belief that counseling is the role of pharmacists, self-efficacy, barriers, and knowledge of community resources). The association between each of year and training (either during or after undergraduate studies) and each outcome was investigated in each sex separately with multiple linear regression models using pooled data across 2005 and 2010. Results: Among female pharmacists, cessation counseling for patients ready to quit improved over time. Training during and after undergraduate studies was significantly associated with higher self-efficacy, better knowledge of community resources, and improved counseling for patients ready and not ready to quit. Also, training after studies was significantly associated with more advantageous beliefs about counseling. Among male pharmacists, knowledge of community resources and perceived barriers to counseling improved over time, but there were no significant differences in cessation counseling. Training during and after undergraduate studies was significantly associated with higher self-efficacy. Training during undergraduate studies was also associated with higher counseling score in patients ready to quit, and training after studies was associated with better knowledge of community resources. Conclusion: Smoking cessation counseling for patients ready to quit improved from 2005 to 2010 among female pharmacists but not among male pharmacists. Introduction: We examined the mediating role of friends smoking in the association between depressive symptoms and daily/weekly cigarette smoking from adolescence into adulthood.Methods: Data were drawn from the Nicotine Dependence In Teens study (NDIT, Canada) and the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC, UK) studies. Three age groups were investigated in NDIT: age 13-14 (n = 1189), 15-16 (n = 1107), and 17-18 (n = 1075), and one in ALSPAC (n = 4482, age 18-21). Multivariable mediation models decomposed the total effect (TE) of depressive symptoms on smoking into a natural direct effect (NDE) and natural indirect effect (NIE) through friends smoking.Results: The odds ratios (ORs) for the TE were relatively constant over time with estimates ranging from 1.12 to 1.35. Friends smoking mediated the association between depressive symptoms and smoking in the two youngest samples (OR [95% confidence interval [CI] 1.09 [1.01,1.17] in 13- to 14-year-olds; 1.10 [1.03,1.18] in 15- to 16-year-olds). In the two older samples, NDE of depressive symptoms was close to the TE, suggestive that mediation was absent or too small to detect.Conclusion: Friends smoking mediates the association between depressive symptoms and daily/weekly cigarette smoking in young adolescents.Implications: If young adolescents use cigarettes to self-medicate depressive symptoms, then interventions targeting smoking that ignore depressive symptoms may be ineffective. Our results also underscore the importance of the influence of friends in younger adolescents, suggestive that preventive intervention should target the social environment, including social relationships. Introduction: Recent studies evidenced that adolescent never-smokers exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke (SHS) endorsed nicotine dependence symptoms. Other studies showed that SHS exposure measured with biomarkers among never-smokers independently predicted withdrawal sensations and prospective smoking initiation. The aim of the present study was to replicate and extend these findings by investigating whether social and pharmacological measures of SHS exposure predicted precursors to smoking among never-smoking adolescents. Methods: Participants included 327 never-smokers aged 11–15 years attending sixth or seventh grade in French language schools in Montréal, Canada. They completed self-report questionnaires measuring their smoking status, social smoke exposure (number of smokers in their environment and number of situations where SHS exposure occurs), and precursors to smoking initiation (smoking expectancies, perceived nicotine dependence, and smoking susceptibility). Each participant provided a saliva sample from which cotinine biomarkers were derived to measure pharmacological exposure to SHS. Results: When predictors were modeled individually, number of smokers predicted perceived nicotine dependence (p ≤ .05), smoking susceptibility (p ≤ .001), and expected benefits (p ≤ .05), whereas number of situations predicted smoking susceptibility (p ≤ .01). When predictors were modeled simultaneously, number of smokers predicted perceived nicotine dependence (p ≤ .01), smoking susceptibility (p ≤ .01), and expected benefits (p ≤ .05). Conclusions: Social smoke exposure was a predictor for smoking precursors. Pharmacological exposure to SHS did not predict smoking precursors, which may be partly attributable to the low cotinine values observed in our sample. Introduction:: Smoking cessation counseling by health professionals is an effective approach to increase cessation rates among smokers. To guide the development of training and educational interventions, we surveyed six health professional groups including general practitioners (GPs), pharmacists, dentists, dental hygienists, nurses, and respiratory therapists, in order to describe current practices and identify the correlates of smoking cessation counseling. Introduction: Few interventions target adolescent cigarette smokers to prevent escalation in cigarette use or promote cessation, in part because little is known about co-developing smoking and nicotine dependence (ND). Our objectives were to: (1) estimate developmental trajectories of ND/cravings, withdrawal symptoms, the modified Fagerström Tolerance Questionnaire (mFTQ) and ICD-10 tobacco dependence in incident adolescent smokers; (2) describe concordance in number and shapes of trajectories across the four ND indicators; and (3) classify participants in each ND trajectory according to cigarette smoking trajectories.Methods: Data were drawn from an ongoing longitudinal investigation of 1294 grade 7 students recruited in 1999-2000 in 10 Montreal-area high schools. Group-based joint trajectory models were used to identify distinct subgroups defined by the four ND indicators, in 307 incident smokers.Results: The optimal trajectory model included five groups for ND/craving and four groups for each of withdrawal symptoms, the mFTQ and ICD-10 tobacco dependence. The four ND indicators showed similar developmental patterns and classification into smoking trajectory groups, although some discordance was observed. Smokers in the low-level decreaser group and stable low consumers who exhibited high ND were younger than those in the cigarette-low ND trajectory groups. Moderate or rapid escalators who exhibited no/low ND were less likely to have university-educated mothers and more likely to have parents who smoke.Conclusions: Trajectories were similar across ND indicators, and generally reflected cigarette smoking trajectory shapes. Novice smokers may need education to become self-aware of developing ND symptoms, as well as to learn about alternative courses of action once ND symptoms manifest.Implications: Trajectories of cigarette smoking and ND symptoms have rarely been investigated concurrently. This study provides evidence of high concordance across four distinct ND indicators in the proportion of participants with no/low-level dependence, and with high or increasing ND. Moreover, the development of cigarette smoking is concordant with ND symptom development. Interventions to prevent escalation and promote cessation should target adolescents before first puff to increase self-awareness of developing ND symptoms, as well as to learn about alternative courses of action once ND symptoms are experienced. Introduction: We investigated whether secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure is associated with depressive symptoms in a population-based sample of children.Methods: Never-smoking students from 29 French-language elementary schools in Greater Montréal, Canada, were followed from 5th to 11th grade (2005-2011) in five waves: 1 (5th grade), 2 (spring 6th grade), 3 (7th grade), 4 (9th grade), and 5 (11th grade). Associations between depressive symptoms and SHS exposure at home and in cars were examined in cross-sectional and longitudinal gamma generalized regression models adjusted for sex, maternal education, and neighborhood socioeconomic status.Results: The sample comprised 1553 baseline never-smokers (mean [SD] age = 10.7 [0.5] years; 44% male; 89% French-speaking). SHS exposure at home and in cars was associated with higher depressive symptom scores in cross-sectional analyses pooled across grades and adjusted for demographics (B [95% confidence interval (CI)] = 0.041 [0.017 to 0.068] for home exposure; 0.057 [0.030 to 0.084] for car exposure). In longitudinal analyses from fifth to sixth grade, B (95% CI), adjusted for demographics and baseline depressive symptoms, was 0.042 (0.003 to 0.080) for home exposure and 0.061 (0.019 to 0.103) for car exposure. From sixth to seventh grade, B (95% CI) was 0.057 (0.003 to 0.110) for home exposure and 0.074 (0.015 to 0.133) for car exposure. SHS exposure at any age did not predict depressive symptoms 2 years later.Conclusions: SHS exposure is associated with depressive symptoms in young persons, both concurrently and 1 year later. This finding adds to the evidence base supporting that children should be protected from SHS exposure.Implications: SHS exposure has deleterious effects on physical health and results of this study raise concerns that such exposure might also affect the mental health of young persons. Clearly, protecting children from SHS in all locations is a critical public health priority. Although research is needed to determine if the association between SHS exposure and depressive symptoms is causal, continued implementation of smoking bans and educational efforts to discourage smoking in vehicles when children are present are warranted. There may be sex differences in the response to nicotine, according to findings of studies in animals; however, sex differences in the natural course of cigarette smoking and nicotine dependence are documented in few studies. Prevalent (n = 240 girls; n = 184 boys) and incident (n = 231 girls; n = 184 boys) cigarette smokers from the Nicotine Dependence in Teens Study were followed up to 5 years after first puff, from age 12 to 18 years (1999–2005). We used Cox proportional hazards models to compare time to development of 3 cigarette-use (i.e., whole cigarette; 100 cigarettes lifetime; regular smoking), and 3 nicotine-dependence symptom (i.e., “really need a cigarette”; mentally addicted; physically addicted) milestones across sex. Girls were at higher risk than boys of attaining all milestones; hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) ranged from 1.35 (1.06, 1.72) for 100 cigarettes lifetime to 1.74 (1.44, 2.10) for “really need a cigarette.” Among nonregular smokers, 26% (8%; 43%) and 25% (6%; 44%) more girls than boys reported “really need a cigarette” 1 and 2 years, respectively, after first puff. Preventive interventions may need adjustment to incorporate these findings. The Interdisciplinary Study of Inequalities in Smoking (ISIS) is a cohort study investigating the joint effects of residents' socio-demographic characteristics and neighbourhood attributes on the social distribution of smoking in a young adult population. Smoking is a behaviour with an increasingly steep social class gradient; smoking prevalence among young adults is no longer declining at the same rate as among the rest of the population, and there is evidence of growing place-based disparities in smoking. ISIS was established to examine these pressing concerns. The ISIS sample comprises non-institutionalized individuals aged 18-25 years, who are proficient in English and/or French and who had been living at their current address in Montréal, Canada, for at least 1 year at time of first contact. Two waves of data have been collected: baseline data were collected November 2011-September 2012 (n = 2093), and a second wave of data was collected January-June 2014 (n = 1457). Data were collected from respondents using a self-administered questionnaire, developed by the research team based on sociological theory, which includes questions concerning social, economic, cultural and biological capital, and activity space as well as smoking behaviour. The Nicotine Dependence in Teens (NDIT) study is a prospective cohort investigation of 1294 students recruited in 1999-2000 from all grade 7 classes in a convenience sample of 10 high schools in Montreal, Canada. Its primary objectives were to study the natural course and determinants of cigarette smoking and nicotine dependence in novice smokers. The main source of data was self-report questionnaires administered in class at school every 3 months from grade 7 to grade 11 (1999-2005), for a total of 20 survey cycles during high school education. Questionnaires were also completed after graduation from high school in 2007-08 and 2011-12 (survey cycles 21 and 22, respectively) when participants were aged 20 and 24 years on average, respectively. In addition to its primary objectives, NDIT has embedded studies on obesity, blood pressure, physical activity, team sports, sedentary behaviour, diet, genetics, alcohol use, use of illicit drugs, second-hand smoke, gambling, sleep and mental health. Results to date are described in 58 publications, 20 manuscripts in preparation, 13 MSc and PhD theses and 111 conference presentations. Introduction: Waterpipe smoking is increasingly popular among North American youth. However, the extent to which waterpipe use is sustained over time is not known. The objective of this study was to describe the frequency and the predictors of sustained waterpipe use over 4 years among young adults. Methods: Data were available in a prospective cohort investigation of 1,293 seventh-grade students recruited in a convenience sample of 10 secondary schools in Montreal, Canada, in 1999. Data on past-year waterpipe use were collected from 777 participants when they were age 20 years on average (in 2007–2008) and again when they were age 24 years (in 2011–2012) in mailed self-report questionnaires. Twenty potential predictors of sustained waterpipe use were tested, each in a separate multivariable logistic regression model. Results: About 51% of 182 waterpipe users at age 20 reported waterpipe use 4 years later. Most sustained users (88%) smoked a waterpipe less than once a month. Parental smoking, being currently employed, less frequent cigarette smoking, and more frequent marijuana use were associated with sustained waterpipe use. Conclusions: Half of the young adults who used waterpipe during young adulthood reported use 4 years later. The analysis reported in this paper was conducted to further explore initially negative findings of a study intended to help orient the development, implementation, and evaluation of smoking cessation programs for junior college students. A total of 69 students (39 males and 30 females) participated in nine focus group discussions held at one French-speaking and one English-speaking college in central Montreal. Three groups consisted of ex-smokers, and the remainder were current smokers. Group participants were asked to react to a series of proposed smoking cessation interventions identified from the literature. Qualitative analysis was undertaken of verbatim transcriptions of five of the focus group discussions, with input from the four others. Second-level analysis of the focus group data suggested that the students' reactions to proposed smoking cessation interventions could be understood using Eriksonian developmental theory, in particular how the cessation programs could contribute to the process of consolidating personal and social identity. Implications for the design of cessation programs were then identified. The results of these exploratory analyses suggested that to attract and maintain participation of college students, smoking cessation interventions should not necessarily be centered on smoking but rather (a) provide opportunities and support for exploration of, and commitment to, personal and social identities that exclude smoking, (b) target naturally occurring social groups while responding to students' needs for social support and validation, and (c) help students cope with stress and life demands and not add to these. This study describes student perceptions of school staff smoking before and after implementation of legislation prohibiting smoking on school grounds. Students completed self-report questionnaires before (grade 6) and after (grade 7, 9 and 11) the law. The percentage of students reporting that school staff smoked in areas where smoking is forbidden was 19%, 32% and 33% in grade 7, 9 and 11, respectively. The mean(SD) score for the frequency with which students saw school staff smoking decreased after the ban but increased thereafter [2.5(1.1), 1.9(1.0), 2.4(1.1) and 2.3(1.1)] in grade 6, 7, 9 and 11, respectively [F(2.861,1662.229) = 45.350, P < 0.001].
