The Fornax galaxy cluster is the richest nearby (D ∼ 20 Mpc) galaxy association in the southern sky. As such, it provides a wealth of opportunities to elucidate on the processes where environment holds a key role in transforming galaxies. Although it has been the focus of many studies, Fornax has never been explored with contiguous homogeneous wide-field imaging in 12 photometric narrow and broad bands like those provided by the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS). In this paper, we present the S-PLUS Fornax Project (S+FP) that aims to comprehensively analyse the galaxy content of the Fornax cluster using S-PLUS. Our data set consists of 106 S-PLUS wide-field frames (FoV∼1.4 × 1.4 deg2) observed in five Sloan Digital Sky Survey-like ugriz broad bands and seven narrow bands covering specific spectroscopic features like [O  ii ], Ca  ii  H+K, Hδ, G band, Mg b triplet, Hα, and the Ca  ii triplet. Based on S-PLUS specific automated photometry, aimed at correctly detecting Fornax galaxies and globular clusters in S-PLUS images, our data set provides the community with catalogues containing homogeneous 12-band photometry for ∼3 × 106 resolved and unresolved objects within a region extending over ∼208 deg2 (∼5  R vir in RA) around Fornax' central galaxy, NGC 1399. We further explore the eagle and IllustrisTNG cosmological simulations to identify 45 Fornax-like clusters and generate mock images on all 12 S-PLUS bands of these structures down to galaxies with M ⋆ ≥ 108 M⊙. We present the S-PLUS Transient Extension Program (STEP): a supernova and fast transient survey conducted in the southern hemisphere using data from the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) Main Survey and the T80-South telescope. Transient astrophysical phenomena have a range of interest that goes through different fields of astrophysics and cosmology. With the detection of an electromagnetic counterpart to the gravitational wave (GW) event GW170817 from a binary neutron stars merger, new techniques and resources to study fast astrophysical transients in the multimessenger context have increased. In this paper, we present the STEP overview, the SN follow-up data obtained, data reduction, analysis of new transients and deep learning algorithms to optimize transient candidate selection. Additionally, we present prospects and optimized strategy for the search of gravitational wave counterparts in the current LIGO/Virgo/Kagra observational run (O4) in the context of T80-South telescope. The Magellanic Clouds are the most massive and closest satellite galaxies of the Milky Way (MW), with stars covering ages from a few Myr up to 13 Gyr. This makes them important for validating integrated light methods to study stellar populations and star formation processes, which can be applied to more distant galaxies. We characterized a set of stellar clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), using the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey. This is the first age (metallicity) determination for 11 (65) clusters of this sample. Through its seven narrow bands, centred on important spectral features, and five broad bands, we can retrieve detailed information about stellar populations. We obtained ages and metallicities for all stellar clusters using the Bayesian spectral energy distribution fitting code bagpipes. With a sample of clusters in the colour range −0.20 < r − z < +0.35, for which our determined parameters are most reliable, we modeled the age–metallicity relation of SMC. At any given age, the metallicities of SMC clusters are lower than those of both the Gaia Sausage-Enceladus disrupted dwarf galaxy and the MW. In comparison with literature values, differences are Δlog(age) ≈ 0.31 and Δ[Fe/H] ≈ 0.41, which is comparable to low-resolution spectroscopy of individual stars. Finally, we confirm a previously known gradient, with younger clusters in the centre and older ones preferentially located in the outermost regions. We present tests of a new method to simultaneously estimate stellar population and emission-line (EL) properties of galaxies out of the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) photometry. The technique uses the AlStar code, updated with an empirical prior that greatly improves its ability to estimate ELs using only the survey's 12 bands. The tests compare the output of (noise-perturbed) synthetic photometry of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxies to properties derived from previous full spectral fitting and detailed EL analysis. For realistic signal-to-noise ratios, stellar population properties are recovered to better than 0.2 dex in masses, mean ages, metallicities, and ±0.2 mag for the extinction. More importantly, ELs are recovered remarkably well for a photometric survey. We obtain input − output dispersions of 0.05–0.2 dex for the equivalent widths of [O  ii ], [O  iii ], Hβ, Hα, [N  ii ], and [S  ii ], and even better for lines stronger than ∼5 Å. These excellent results are achieved by combining two empirical facts into a prior that restricts the EL space available for the fits. (1) Because, for the redshifts explored here, Hα and [N  ii ] fall in a single narrow band (J0660), their combined equivalent width is always well recovered, even when [N  ii ]/Hα is not. (2) We know from SDSS that |$W_{\mathrm{H}\alpha +[\mathrm{N}\,\small {\rm II}] }$| correlates with [N  ii ]/Hα, which can be used to tell if a galaxy belongs to the left or right wings in the classical Baldwin–Phillips–Telervich (BPT) diagnostic diagram. Example applications to integrated light and spatially resolved data are also presented, including a comparison with independent results obtained with the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE)-based integral field spectroscopy. The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) is an ongoing survey of ∼9300 deg2 in the southern sky in a 12-band photometric system. This paper presents the second data release (DR2) of S-PLUS, consisting of 514 tiles covering an area of 950 deg2. The data has been fully calibrated using a new photometric calibration technique suitable for the new generation of wide-field multifilter surveys. This technique consists of a χ2 minimization to fit synthetic stellar templates to already calibrated data from other surveys, eliminating the need for standard stars and reducing the survey duration by ∼15 per cent. We compare the template-predicted and S-PLUS instrumental magnitudes to derive the photometric zero-points (ZPs). We show that these ZPs can be further refined by fitting the stellar templates to the 12 S-PLUS magnitudes, which better constrain the models by adding the narrow-band information. We use the STRIPE82 region to estimate ZP errors, which are ≲ 10 mmags for filters J0410, J0430, g , J0515, r , J0660, i , J0861 and z ; ≲ 15 mmags for filter J0378; and ≲ 25 mmags for filters u and J0395. We describe the complete data flow of the S-PLUS/DR2 from observations to the final catalogues and present a brief characterization of the data. We show that, for a minimum signal-to-noise threshold of 5, the photometric depths of the DR2 range from 19.1 to 20.5 mag (measured in Petrosian apertures), depending on the filter. This paper provides a catalogue of stars, quasars, and galaxies for the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey Data Release 2 (S-PLUS DR2) in the Stripe 82 region. We show that a 12-band filter system (5 Sloan-like and 7 narrow bands) allows better performance for object classification than the usual analysis based solely on broad bands (regardless of infrared information). Moreover, we show that our classification is robust against missing values. Using spectroscopically confirmed sources retrieved from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR16 and DR14Q, we train a random forest classifier with the 12 S-PLUS magnitudes + 4 morphological features. A second random forest classifier is trained with the addition of the W1 (3.4  |$\mu\mathrm{m} $|⁠) and W2 (4.6  |$\mu\mathrm{m} $|⁠) magnitudes from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). Forty-four per cent of our catalogue have WISE counterparts and are provided with classification from both models. We achieve 95.76 per cent (52.47 per cent) of quasar purity, 95.88 per cent (92.24 per cent) of quasar completeness, 99.44 per cent (98.17 per cent) of star purity, 98.22 per cent (78.56 per cent) of star completeness, 98.04 per cent (81.39 per cent) of galaxy purity, and 98.8 per cent (85.37 per cent) of galaxy completeness for the first (second) classifier, for which the metrics were calculated on objects with (without) WISE counterpart. A total of 2926 787 objects that are not in our spectroscopic sample were labelled, obtaining 335 956 quasars, 1347 340 stars, and 1243 391 galaxies. From those, 7.4 per cent, 76.0 per cent, and 58.4 per cent were classified with probabilities above 80 per cent. In this paper we present a thorough discussion about the photometric redshift (photo- z) performance of the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS). This survey combines a seven narrow +5 broad passband filter system, with a typical photometric-depth of r ∼ 21 AB. For this exercise, we utilize the Data Release 1 (DR1), corresponding to 336 deg2 from the Stripe-82 region. We rely on the BPZ2 code to compute our estimates, using a new library of SED models, which includes additional templates for quiescent galaxies. When compared to a spectroscopic redshift control sample of ∼100 k galaxies, we find a precision of σ z <0.8 per cent, <2.0 per cent, or <3.0 per cent for galaxies with magnitudes r < 17, <19, and <21, respectively. A precision of 0.6 per cent is attained for galaxies with the highest Odds values. These estimates have a negligible bias and a fraction of catastrophic outliers inferior to 1 per cent. We identify a redshift window (i.e. 0.26 < z < 0.32) where our estimates double their precision, due to the simultaneous detection of two emission lines in two distinct narrow bands; representing a window opportunity to conduct statistical studies such as luminosity functions. We forecast a total of ∼2 M, ∼16 M and ∼32 M galaxies in the S-PLUS survey with a photo-z precision of σ z <1.0 per cent, <2.0 per cent, and <2.5 per cent after observing 8000 deg2. We also derive redshift probability density functions, proving their reliability encoding redshift uncertainties and their potential recovering the n (z) of galaxies at z < 0.4, with an unprecedented precision for a photometric survey in the Southern hemisphere. High extinction and crowding create a natural limitation for optical surveys towards the central regions of the Milky Way, where the gas and dust are mainly confined. Large-scale near-infrared (IR) surveys of the Galactic plane and bulge are a good opportunity to explore open scientific questions as well as to test our capability to explore future data sets efficiently. Thanks to the VISTA Variables in the Vía Láctea (VVV) ESO public survey, it is now possible to explore a large number of objects in those regions. This paper addresses the variability analysis of all VVV point sources having more than 10 observations in VVVDR4 using a novel approach. In total, the near-IR light curves of 288 378 769 sources were analysed using methods developed in the New Insight Into Time Series Analysis project. As a result, we present a complete sample having 44 998 752 variable star candidates (VVV-CVSC), which include accurate individual coordinates, near-IR magnitudes (Z,Y,J, and Hs), extinctions A (Ks), variability indices, periods, amplitudes, among other parameters to assess the science. Unfortunately, a side effect of having a highly complete sample, is also having a high level of contamination by non-variable (contamination ratio of non-variables to variables is slightly over 10:1). To deal with this, we also provide some flags and parameters that can be used by the community to decrease the number of variable candidates without heavily decreasing the completeness of the sample. In particular, we cross-identified 339 601 of our sources with Simbad and AAVSO data bases, which provide us with information for these objects at other wavelengths. This subsample constitutes a unique resource to study the corresponding near-IR variability of known sources as well as to assess the IR variability related with X-ray and gamma-ray sources. On the other hand, the other |${\sim }99.5{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| sources in our sample constitutes a number of potentially new objects with variability information for the heavily crowded and reddened regions of the Galactic plane and bulge. The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) is imaging ∼9300 deg2 of the celestial sphere in 12 optical bands using a dedicated 0.8 m robotic telescope, the T80-South, at the Cerro Tololo Inter-american Observatory, Chile. The telescope is equipped with a 9.2k × 9.2k e2v detector with 10 |$\rm {\mu m}$| pixels, resulting in a field of view of 2 deg2 with a plate scale of 0.55 arcsec pixel−1. The survey consists of four main subfields, which include two non-contiguous fields at high Galactic latitudes (| b | > 30°, 8000 deg2) and two areas of the Galactic Disc and Bulge (for an additional 1300 deg2). S-PLUS uses the Javalambre 12-band magnitude system, which includes the 5 ugriz broad-band filters and 7 narrow-band filters centred on prominent stellar spectral features: the Balmer jump/[OII], Ca H + K, H δ, G band, Mg b triplet, H α, and the Ca triplet. S-PLUS delivers accurate photometric redshifts (δ z /(1 + z) = 0.02 or better) for galaxies with r < 19.7 AB mag and z < 0.4, thus producing a 3D map of the local Universe over a volume of more than |$1\, (\mathrm{Gpc}/h)^3$|⁠. The final S-PLUS catalogue will also enable the study of star formation and stellar populations in and around the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, as well as searches for quasars, variable sources, and low-metallicity stars. In this paper we introduce the main characteristics of the survey, illustrated with science verification data highlighting the unique capabilities of S-PLUS. We combine data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) to simultaneously analyse optical spectra and ultraviolet photometry of 231 643 galaxies with the starlight spectral synthesis code using state-of-the-art stellar population models. We present a new method to estimate GALEX photometry in the SDSS spectroscopic aperture, which proves quite reliable if applied to large samples. In agreement with previous experiments with CALIFA, we find that adding UV constraints leads to a moderate increase on the fraction of ∼107–108 yr populations and a concomitant decrease of younger and older components, yielding slightly older luminosity-weighted mean stellar ages. These changes are most relevant in the low-mass end of the blue cloud. An increase in dust attenuation is observed for galaxies dominated by young stars. We investigate the contribution of different stellar populations to the fraction of light in GALEX and SDSS bands across the UV optical colour–magnitude diagram. As an example application, we use this λ dependence to highlight differences between retired galaxies with and without emission lines. In agreement with an independent study by Herpich et al. we find that the former shows an excess of intermediate-age populations when compared to the later. Finally, we test the suitability of two different prescription for dust, finding that our data set is best-fitting using the attenuation law of starburst galaxies. Early-type retired galaxies (RGs, i.e. galaxies which no longer form stars) can be divided into two classes: those with no emission lines, here dubbed lineless RGs, and those with emission lines, dubbed liny RGs. Both types of galaxies contain hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES) which emit ionizing photons. The difference must thus lie in the presence or absence of a reservoir of ionizable gas. From a volume-limited sample of 38 038 elliptical galaxies, we explore differences in physical properties between liny and lineless using data from the SDSS, WISE, and GALEX catalogues. To avoid biases in the comparison, we pair-match liny and lineless in stellar mass, redshift, and half-light Petrosian radius. We detect marginal differences in their optical stellar ages and NUV luminosities, indicating that liny RGs have an excess of intermediate-age (0.1–5 Gyr) stellar populations. Liny RGs show higher dust attenuation and W 3 luminosities than their lineless counterparts. We also find that the amount of warm gas needed to explain the observed Hα luminosity in liny RGs is 105–108M⊙, and that their [N ii ] /[O ii ] emission-line ratios are typical of those of the most massive star-forming galaxies. Taken together, these results rules out the following sources for the warm gas in liny RGs: mass-loss from intermediate-mass stars, mergers with metal-poor galaxies and intergalactic streams. They imply instead an inflow of enriched gas previously expelled from the galaxy or a merger with a metal-rich galaxy. We use the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Wide-field Sky Survey Explorer surveys to investigate the real nature of galaxies defined as low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs) in the BPT diagram. After establishing a mid-infrared colour W2-W3 = 2.5 as the optimal separator between galaxies with and without star formation, we investigate the loci of different galaxy classes in the WHα versus W2-W3 space. We find that: (1) a large fraction of LINER-like galaxies are emission-line retired galaxies, i.e. galaxies which have stopped forming stars and are powered by hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES). Their W2-W3 colours show no sign of star formation and their Hα equivalent widths, WHα, are consistent with ionization by their old stellar populations. (2) Another important fraction have W2-W3 indicative of star formation. This includes objects located in the supposedly 'pure AGN' zone of the BPT diagram. (3) A smaller fraction of LINER-like galaxies have no trace of star formation from W2-W3 and a high WHα, pointing to the presence of an AGN. (4) Finally, a fewLINERs tagged as retired by theirWHα but withW2-W3 values indicative of star formation are late-type galaxies whose SDSS spectra cover only the old 'retired' bulge. This reinforces the view that LINER-like galaxies are a mixed bag of objects involving different physical phenomena and observational effects thrusted into the same locus of the BPT diagram.
