Analysing independent 1-yr data sets of 10 European superconducting gravimeters (SG) reveals statistically significant temporal variations of M2 tidal parameters. Both common short-term (<2 yr) and long-term (>2 yr) features are identified in all SG time-series but one. The averaged variations of the amplitude factor are about 0.2‰. The path of load vector variations equivalent to the temporal changes of tidal parameters suggests the presence of an 8.85 yr modulation (lunar perigee). The tidal waves having the potential to modulate M2 with this period belong to the 3rd degree constituents. Their amplitude factors turn out to be much closer to body tide model predictions than that of the main 2nd degree M2, which indicates ocean loading for 3rd degree waves to be less prominent than for 2nd degree waves within the M2 group. These two different responses to the loading suggest that the observed modulation is more due to insufficient frequency resolution of limited time-series rather than to time variable loading. Presently, SG gravity time-series are still too short to prove if time variable loading processes are involved too as in case of the annual M2 modulation known to appear for analysis intervals of less than 1 yr. Whatever the variations are caused by, they provide the upper accuracy limit for earth model validation and permit estimating the temporal stability of SG scale factors and assessing the quality of gravity time-series. Recent studies show that terrestrial and space-based observations of gravity agree over Europe. In this paper, we compare time-series of terrestrial gravity (including the contribution due to surface displacement) as measured by superconducting gravimeters (SGs), space-based observations from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and predicted changes in gravity derived from two global hydrological models at 10 SG stations in central Europe. Despite the fact that all observations and models observe a maximum in the same season due to water storage changes, there is little agreement between the SG time-series even when they are separated by distances smaller than the spatial resolution of GRACE. We also demonstrate that GRACE and the SG observations and the water storage models do not display significant correlation at seasonal periods nor at interannual periods. These findings are consistent with the fact that the SGs are sensitive primarily to mass changes in the few hundred metres surrounding the station. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have analysed the Ny-Ålesund very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) data over the period 1994 August to 2004 May, and we obtain secular displacement rates relative to a NNR-NUVEL-1A reference frame of and for the north, east and vertical directions, respectively. The corresponding global positioning system (GPS) station displacement rates relative to the same reference frame for the north, east, and vertical directions are at NYA1 and at NALL, where these GPS rates were derived from the ITRF2000 velocity solution of Heflin. From the comparison at 25 globally distributed collocated sites, we found that the difference in uplift rate between VLBI and GPS at Ny-Ålesund is mainly due to a GPS reference frame scale rate error corresponding to 1.6 mm yr−1 in the GPS vertical rates. The uplift rate was estimated to be 5.2 ± 0.3 mm yr−1 from the analysis of the tide gauge data at Ny-Ålesund. Hence the uplift rates obtained from three different kinds of data are very consistent each other. The absolute gravity (AG) measurements at Ny-Ålesund, which were carried out four times (period: 1998–2002) by three different FG5 absolute gravimeters, lead to a decreasing secular rate of . In this analysis, the actual data obtained from a superconducting gravimeter at Ny-Ålesund were used in the corrections for the gravity tide (including the ocean tide effect) and for the air pressure effect. We have estimated three geophysical contributions to examine the observed rates: (1) the effect of the sea-level (SL) change on a timescale of a few decades, (2) the effect of the present-day ice melting (PDIM) in Svalbard and (3) the sensitivity of the computed post-glacial rebound (PGR) effects to different choices of the models of past ice history and Earth's viscosity parameters. Our analysis indicates that the effect of SL change can be neglected as the main source of the discrepancy. On the other hand, the effect of PDIM cannot be ignored in explaining the mutual relation between the observed horizontal and vertical rates and the predicted ones. A large melting rate of the order of −75 cm yr11 (i.e. roughly 1.6 times larger than the mean rate derived from glaciology over Svalbard) would explain the observed uplift but only half of the gravity changes. Our comparison results clearly point out the importance of both the estimation accuracy of the elastic deformations and better observation accuracy to constrain the size of PGR effects in the northwestern Svalbard more tightly. We report on the results of 7 yr of collocated gravity observations made with an FG5 absolute (AG) gravimeter and a GWR C-Series superconducting gravimeter (SG) located at the Membach Geophysical Station in eastern Belgium. The SG gravity residuals track changes in gravity periodically observed by the AG, at the microgal level. Further, in the SG residual signal we distinguish a quasi-seasonal term that can be mostly explained by variations in local water storage effects. In the AG time-series we observe a small trend in the gravity of perhaps indicating that the Membach Station is being displaced upwards by about 3.0 mm yr−1. An uplift of the region is confirmed by Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements performed 3 km away. We are able to explain the features in the gravity time-series in terms of water storage variability, post-glacial rebound and tectonic activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
