Mites (Arachnida: Acari) are one of the most diverse groups of organisms associated with bark beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae), but their taxonomy and ecology are poorly understood, including in Canada. Here we address this by describing the diversity, species composition, and host associations of mesostigmatic and oribatid mites collected from scolytines across four sites in eastern Ontario, Canada, in 2008 and 2009. Using Lindgren funnel traps baited with a-pinene, ethanol lures, or Ips pint (Say) pheromone lures, a total of 5,635 bark beetles (30 species) were collected, and 16.4% of these beetles had at least one mite. From these beetles, a total of 2,424 mites representing 33 species from seven families were collected. The majority of mite species had a narrow host range from one (33.3%) or two (36.4%) host species, and fewer species had a host range of three or more hosts (30.3%). This study represents the first broad investigation of the acarofauna of scolytines in Canada, and we expand upon the known (worldwide) host records of described mite species by 19%, and uncover 12 new species. Half (7) of the 14 most common mites collected in this study showed amarked preference for a single host species, which contradicts the hypothesis that nonparasitic mites are typically not host specific, at least locally. Moreover, host records from the literature and those of this study together suggest that at a global scale, bark beetle mites have a broad host range, while at a local scale many species are host specific. The article presents a study on the ingestion of small stones as self-medication behavior of double-crested cormorants. The study is conducted to examine the antiparasite function and to determine the relationship of the behavior to the sexes of cormorants from Lake Ontario Site and Lake Erie site. It presents the difference on the presence of small stone and the parasitism from both sites. It found out that the presence of small stones in cormorants protects them from the high levels of infection brought by Contacaecum spp. nematodes and that ingestion is capable of antiparasite function. Gonadal inspection, chi-square tests, and Spearman rank correlation are used in the study.

The Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis) is a pelagic seabird that breeds across 25° of latitude, from the boreal to the high Arctic oceanographic zones. We examined the breeding schedule of fulmars in the remote Cape Vera colony in the Canadian high Arctic, a marine region covered by sea ice much of the year, to determine if the timing of breeding and colony attendance patterns of birds differed from the breeding phenology of fulmars in colonies farther south. Cape Vera fulmars arrived at the colony later in the year, spent less time at the colony before egg-laying, and took a significantly longer prelaying exodus from the colony compared to fulmars nesting in more southerly colonies. After egg-laying, however, patterns of colony attendance by fulmars in the high Arctic were similar to patterns for fulmars in southern colonies; this part of the fulmar breeding schedule may be inflexible. The differences in breeding schedules across the species' range might reflect behavioral adaptations by arctic-nesting birds to accommodate the physical and biological limitations imposed by extensive sea ice near arctic colonies, particularly early in the breeding season. Given that climate warming and corresponding reductions in sea ice are taking place in the Arctic, it remains to be determined whether fulmars in the high Arctic have the behavioral flexibility in their breeding phenology to compensate for rapidly occurring changes in their environment. Female-limited colour polymorphism occurs in many damselfly species, where one morph resembles the male (andromorph) and the other is dissimilar (gynomorph). Explanations for this phenomenon vary, but most assume that andromorphism has arisen in odonates, as a response to excessive male harassment. Here, we quantify the extent of continental and seasonal variation in female morph frequencies in a widely-distributed damselfly and ask whether the spatiotemporal patterns in andromorph frequency can be understood on the basis of sexual harassment theory. We sampled the damselfly, Nehalennia irene (Hagen) among regions across Canada, and at several sites, over the reproductive season, within Central Canada. Andromorph frequencies ranged from 0 to > 90% across Canada. In particular, sites in Western Canada had consistently high andromorph frequencies, whereas andromorph frequencies among Central sites were lower and variable and, among Eastern sites, were lower still (except one site) and relatively invariant. For populations in Central Canada, both andromorph frequencies and population densities varied significantly over time, reaching a peak mid-season. As expected, morph frequency covaried significantly with estimates of male harassment in some cases, but estimates of male harassment did not consistently account for variation in morph frequencies within all regions. Additional factors such as genetic drift may influence morph frequency at the edge of a species’ range. We found evidence that a nematode (Skrjabinoclava morrisoni) adaptively manipulates the behavior of its intermediate host (the amphipod Corophium volutator) to increase its likelihood of transmission to itsfinal host (the semipalmated sandpiper, Calidris pusilla). We found that male and female amphipods parasitized by nematodes increased their surface activity in the field during daytime, but not during nighttime hours. Increased surface activity is known to increase susceptibility of amphipods to predation by sandpipers during the day, but notat night, when sandpipers do not feed visually. Also, as predicted by the manipulation hypothesis, only late-stage (infective) larvae of nematodes were associated with behavioral changes of amphipods. We found no evidence that parasites were associated with other amphipod behaviors in the laboratory, such as trail complexity, distance traveled, or burrow-probing activity of crawling males as would be expected if parasitized hosts altered their own behavior. Survivorship of amphipods was also unaffected by parasitism, which may favor parasite transmission. Thus, behavioral changes of parasitized hosts were simple,and their expression was context-dependent and related to likelihoodof predation. We argue that maturation times of nematodes in relation to migration schedules of sandpipers provide a narrow window of opportunity and may explain why nematodes manipulate amphipod behavior.
