There is an overwhelming evidence that white dwarfs host planetary systems; revealed by the presence, disruption, and accretion of planetary bodies. A lower limit on the frequency of white dwarfs that host planetary material has been estimated to be ≃ 25–50 per cent; inferred from the ongoing or recent accretion of metals on to both hydrogen-atmosphere and warm helium-atmosphere white dwarfs. Now with the unbiased sample of white dwarfs observed by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey in their Early Data Release (EDR), we have determined the frequency of metal enrichment around cool-helium atmosphere white dwarfs as 21 ± 3 per cent using a sample of 234 systems. This value is in good agreement with values determined from previous studies. With the current samples we cannot distinguish whether the frequency of planetary accretion varies with system age or host-star mass, but the DESI data release 1 will contain roughly an order of magnitude more white dwarfs than DESI EDR and will allow these parameters to be investigated. We estimate the redshift-dependent, anisotropic clustering signal in the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Year 1 Survey created by tidal alignments of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) and a selection-induced galaxy orientation bias. To this end, we measured the correlation between LRG shapes and the tidal field with DESI's Year 1 redshifts, as traced by LRGs and Emission-Line Galaxies. We also estimate the galaxy orientation bias of LRGs caused by DESI's aperture-based selection, and find it to increase by a factor of seven between redshifts 0.4−1.1 due to redder, fainter galaxies falling closer to DESI's imaging selection cuts. These effects combine to dampen measurements of the quadrupole of the correlation function (ξ2) caused by structure growth on scales of 10–80 h −1 Mpc by about 0.15 per cent for low redshifts (0.4 < z < 0.6) and 0.8 per cent for high (0.8 < z < 1.1), a significant fraction of DESI's error budget. We provide estimates of the ξ2 signal created by intrinsic alignments that can be used to correct this effect, which is necessary to meet DESI's forecasted precision on measuring the growth rate of structure. We describe the target selection and characteristics of the DESI Peculiar Velocity Survey, the largest survey of peculiar velocities (PVs) using both the fundamental plane (FP) and the Tully–Fisher (TF) relationship planned to date. We detail how we identify suitable early-type galaxies (ETGs) for the FP and suitable late-type galaxies (LTGs) for the TF relation using the photometric data provided by the DESI Legacy Imaging Survey DR9. Subsequently, we provide targets for 373 533 ETGs and 118 637 LTGs within the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) 5-yr footprint. We validate these photometric selections using existing morphological classifications. Furthermore, we demonstrate using survey validation data that DESI is able to measure the spectroscopic properties to sufficient precision to obtain PVs for our targets. Based on realistic DESI fibre assignment simulations and spectroscopic success rates, we predict the final DESI PV Survey will obtain ∼133 000 FP-based and ∼53 000 TF-based PV measurements over an area of 14 000 deg2. We forecast the ability of using these data to measure the clustering of galaxy positions and PVs from the combined DESI PV and Bright Galaxy Surveys (BGS), which allows for cancellation of cosmic variance at low redshifts. With these forecasts, we anticipate a 4 per cent statistical measurement on the growth rate of structure at z < 0.15. This is over two times better than achievable with redshifts from the BGS alone. Numerical simulations with varying realism indicate an emergent principle−multiphase condensation and large cavity power occur when the ratio of the cooling time to the free-fall time (t cool/ t ff) falls below a threshold value close to 10. Observations indeed show cool-core signatures when this ratio falls below 20–30, but the prevalence of cores with t cool/ t ff  ratio below 10 is rare as compared to simulations. In X-ray observations, we obtain projected spectra from which we have to infer radial gas density and temperature profiles. Using idealized models of X-ray cavities and multiphase gas in the core and 3D hydro jet-ICM simulations, we quantify the biases introduced by deprojection based on the assumption of spherical symmetry in determining t cool/ t ff. We show that while the used methods are able to recover the t cool/ t ff ratio for relaxed clusters, they have an uncertainty of a factor of 2−3 in systems containing large cavities (≳ 20 kpc). We also show that the mass estimates from these methods, in the absence of X-ray spectra close to the virial radius, suffer from a degeneracy between the virial mass (M 200) and the concentration parameter (c) in the form of M 200 c 2 ≈ constant. Additionally, the lack of soft-X-ray (≲ 0.5 keV) coverage and poor spatial resolution makes us overestimate min(t cool/ t ff) by a factor of few in clusters with min(t cool/ t ff) ≲ 5. Massive galaxy clusters undergo strong evolution from z ∼ 1.6 to z ∼ 0.5, with overdense environments at high- z characterized by abundant dust-obscured star formation and stellar mass growth which rapidly give way to widespread quenching. Data spanning the near- to far-infrared (IR) can directly trace this transformation; however, such studies have largely been limited to the massive galaxy end of cluster populations. In this work, we present 'total light' stacking techniques spanning |$3.4\!-\!500\, \mu$| m aimed at revealing the total cluster emission, including low-mass members and potential intracluster dust. We detail our procedures for  WISE, Spitzer , and  Herschel imaging, including corrections to recover the total stacked emission in the case of high fractions of detected galaxies. We apply our techniques to 232 well-studied log |$\, M_{200}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot }\sim 13.8$| clusters in multiple redshift bins, recovering extended cluster emission at all wavelengths. We measure the averaged IR radial profiles and spectral energy distributions (SEDs), quantifying the total stellar and dust content. The near-IR profiles are well described by an NFW model with a high (c ∼ 7) concentration. Dust emission is similarly concentrated, albeit suppressed at  |$r\lesssim 0.3\,$| Mpc. The measured SEDs lack warm dust, consistent with the colder SEDs of low-mass galaxies. We derive total stellar masses consistent with the theoretical M halo− M ⋆ relation and specific star formation rates that evolve strongly with redshift, echoing that of log |$\, M_{\star }/\mathrm{M}_{\odot }\gtrsim 10$| cluster galaxies. Separating out the massive population reveals the majority of cluster far-IR emission (⁠|$\sim 70\!-\!80{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) is provided by the low-mass constituents, which differs from field galaxies. We evaluate the impact of imaging systematics on the clustering of luminous red galaxies (LRG), emission-line galaxies (ELG), and quasars (QSO) targeted for the upcoming Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey. Using Data Release 7 of the DECam Legacy Survey, we study the effects of astrophysical foregrounds, stellar contamination, differences between north galactic cap and south galactic cap measurements, and variations in imaging depth, stellar density, galactic extinction, seeing, airmass, sky brightness, and exposure time before presenting survey masks and weights to mitigate these effects. With our sanitized samples in hand, we conduct a preliminary analysis of the clustering amplitude and evolution of the DESI main targets. From measurements of the angular correlation functions, we determine power law fits |$r_0 = 7.78 \pm 0.26\, h^{-1}$| Mpc, γ  = 1.98 ± 0.02 for LRGs and |$r_0 = 5.45 \pm 0.1\, h^{-1}$| Mpc, γ  = 1.54 ± 0.01 for ELGs. Additionally, from the angular power spectra, we measure the linear biases and model the scale-dependent biases in the weakly non-linear regime. Both sets of clustering measurements show good agreement with survey requirements for LRGs and ELGs, attesting that these samples will enable DESI to achieve precise cosmological constraints. We also present clustering as a function of magnitude, use cross-correlations with external spectroscopy to infer dN/dz and measure clustering as a function of luminosity, and probe higher order clustering statistics through counts-in-cells moments. By utilizing large-scale graph analytic tools implemented in the modern big data platform, apache spark , we investigate the topological structure of gravitational clustering in five different universes produced by cosmological N -body simulations with varying parameters: (1) a WMAP 5-yr compatible ΛCDM cosmology, (2) two different dark energy equation of state variants, and (3) two different cosmic matter density variants. For the big data calculations, we use a custom build of standalone Spark/Hadoop cluster at Korea Institute for Advanced Study and Dataproc Compute Engine in Google Cloud Platform with sample sizes ranging from 7 to 200 million. We find that among the many possible graph-topological measures, three simple ones: (1) the average of number of neighbours (the so-called average vertex degree) α, (2) closed-to-connected triple fraction (the so-called transitivity) |$\tau _\Delta$|⁠ , and (3) the cumulative number density n s ≥ 5 of subgraphs with connected component size s ≥ 5, can effectively discriminate among the five model universes. Since these graph-topological measures are directly related with the usual n -points correlation functions of the cosmic density field, graph-topological statistics powered by big data computational infrastructure opens a new, intuitive, and computationally efficient window into the dark Universe. We investigate the spatial distribution of Ly α-emitting galaxies (LAEs) at z ≈ 2.67, selected from the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey, using two-point statistics and topological diagnostics adopted from network science. We measure the clustering length, r 0 ≈ 4  h −1 Mpc, and the bias,   |$b_{\mathrm{ LAE}} = 2.2^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$|⁠. Fitting the clustering with halo occupation distribution (HOD) models results in two disparate possibilities: (1) where the fraction of central galaxies is <1 per cent in haloes of mass >1012 M⊙ and (2) where the fraction is ≈20 per cent. We refer to these two scenarios as the 'Dusty Core Scenario' for Model#1, since most of the central galaxies in massive haloes are dead in Ly α emission, and the 'Pristine Core Scenario' for Model#2, since the central galaxies are bright in Ly α emission. Traditional two-point statistics cannot distinguish between these disparate models given the current data sets. To overcome this degeneracy, we generate mock catalogues for each HOD model using a high-resolution N -body simulation and adopt a network statistics approach, which provides excellent topological diagnostics for galaxy point distributions. We find three topological anomalies from the spatial distribution of observed LAEs, which are not reproduced by the HOD mocks. We find that Model#2 matches better all network statistics than Model#1, suggesting that the central galaxies in >1012  h −1 M⊙ haloes at z ≈ 2.67 need to be less dusty to be bright as LAEs, potentially implying some replenishing channels of pristine gas such as the cold mode accretion. Changing-look quasars are a recently identified class of active galaxies in which the strong UV continuum and/or broad optical hydrogen emission lines associated with unobscured quasars either appear or disappear on time-scales of months to years. The physical processes responsible for this behaviour are still debated, but changes in the black hole accretion rate or accretion disc structure appear more likely than changes in obscuration. Here, we report on four epochs of spectroscopy of SDSS J110057.70−005304.5, a quasar at a redshift of |$z$|  = 0.378 whose UV continuum and broad hydrogen emission lines have faded, and then returned over the past ≈20 yr. The change in this quasar was initially identified in the infrared, and an archival spectrum from 2010 shows an intermediate phase of the transition during which the flux below rest frame ≈3400 Å has decreased by close to an order of magnitude. This combination is unique compared to previously published examples of changing-look quasars, and is best explained by dramatic changes in the innermost regions of the accretion disc. The optical continuum has been rising since mid-2016, leading to a prediction of a rise in hydrogen emission-line flux in the next year. Increases in the infrared flux are beginning to follow, delayed by a ∼3 yr observed time-scale. If our model is confirmed, the physics of changing-look quasars are governed by processes at the innermost stable circular orbit around the black hole, and the structure of the innermost disc. The easily identifiable and monitored changing-look quasars would then provide a new probe and laboratory of the nuclear central engine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the first results from a minute cadence survey of a 3 deg² field obtained with the Dark Energy Camera. We imaged part of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey area over eight half-nights. We use the stacked images to identify 111 high proper motion white dwarf candidates with g ≤ 24.5 mag and search for eclipse-like events and other sources of variability. We find a new g = 20.64 mag pulsating ZZ Ceti star with pulsation periods of 11-13 min. However, we do not find any transiting planetary companions in the habitable zone of our target white dwarfs. Given the probability of eclipses of 1 per cent and our observing window from the ground, the non-detection of such companions in this first field is not surprising. Minute cadence DECam observations of additional fields will provide stringent constraints on the frequency of planets in the white dwarf habitable zone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The large-scale distribution of galaxies is generally analysed using the two-point correlation function. However, this statistic does not capture the topology of the distribution, and it is necessary to resort to higher order correlations to break degeneracies. We demonstrate that an alternate approach using network analysis can discriminate between topologically different distributions that have similar two-point correlations. We investigate two galaxy point distributions, one produced by a cosmological simulation and the other by a Lévy walk. For the cosmological simulation, we adopt the redshift z = 0.58 slice from Illustris and select galaxies with stellar masses greater than 108M☉. The two-point correlation function of these simulated galaxies follows a single power law, ξ (r) ∼ r-1.5. Then, we generate Lévy walks matching the correlation function and abundance with the simulated galaxies. We find that, while the two simulated galaxy point distributions have the same abundance and two-point correlation function, their spatial distributions are very different; most prominently, filamentary structures, absent in Lévy fractals. To quantify these missing topologies, we adopt network analysis tools and measure diameter, giant component, and transitivity from networks built by a conventional friends-of-friends recipe with various linking lengths. Unlike the abundance and two-point correlation function, these network quantities reveal a clear separation between the two simulated distributions; therefore, the galaxy distribution simulated by Illustris is not a Lévy fractal quantitatively. We find that the described network quantities offer an efficient tool for discriminating topologies and for comparing observed and theoretical distributions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We apply simple analyses techniques developed for the study of complex networks to the study of the cosmic web, the large-scale galaxy distribution. In this paper, we measure three network centralities (ranks of topological importance): degree centrality (DC), closeness centrality (CL), and betweenness centrality (BC) from a network built from the Cosmological Evolution Survey (COSMOS) catalogue. We define eight galaxy populations according to the centrality measures: void, wall, and cluster by DC; main branch and dangling leaf by BC; and kernel, backbone, and fracture by CL. We also define three populations by Voronoi tessellation density to compare these with the DC selection. We apply the topological selections to galaxies in the (photometric) redshift range 0.91 < z < 0.94 from the COSMOS survey, and explore whether the red and blue galaxy populations show differences in colour, star formation rate, and stellar mass in the different topological regions. Despite the limitations and uncertainties associated with using photometric redshift and indirect measurements of galactic parameters, the preliminary results illustrate the potential of network analysis. We present a physical model for the origin of dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs), a class of high-redshift ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) selected at 24 μm which are particularly optically faint . By combining N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations of high-redshift galaxy evolution with 3D polychromatic dust radiative transfer models, we find that luminous DOGs (with mJy at ) are well modelled as extreme gas-rich mergers in massive haloes, with elevated star formation rates (SFR; ) and/or significant active galactic nuclei (AGN) growth , whereas less luminous DOGs are more diverse in nature. At final coalescence, merger-driven DOGs transition from being starburst dominated to AGN dominated, evolving from a ‘bump’ to a power-law (PL) shaped mid-IR (Infrared Array Camera, IRAC) spectral energy distribution (SED). After the DOG phase, the galaxy settles back to exhibiting a ‘bump’ SED with bluer colours and lower SFRs. While canonically PL galaxies are associated with being AGN dominated, we find that the PL mid-IR SED can owe both to direct AGN contribution and to a heavily dust obscured stellar bump at times that the galaxy is starburst dominated. Thus, PL galaxies can be either starburst or AGN dominated. Less luminous DOGs can be well-represented either by mergers or by massive secularly evolving gas-rich disc galaxies (with ). By utilizing similar models as those employed in the submillimetre galaxy (SMG) formation study of Narayanan et al., we investigate the connection between DOGs and SMGs. We find that the most heavily star-forming merger-driven DOGs can be selected as submillimetre galaxies, while both merger-driven and secularly evolving DOGs typically satisfy the BzK selection criteria. The model SEDs from the simulated galaxies match observed data reasonably well, though Mrk 231 and Arp 220 templates provide worse matches. Our models provide testable predictions of the physical masses, dust temperatures, CO linewidths and location on the relation of DOGs.
