With an aim to unveil the population of obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) hosted in high- z dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs), we performed X-ray spectral study of 34 DOGs (0.59 ≤ z ≤ 4.65) lying within 5.3 square degrees of the XMM- Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (XMM-SERVS) coverage in the XMM-Large Scale Structure (XMM-LSS) field. To improve the spectral quality of individual sources, we combined all the existing XMM−Newton data and also included Chandra /Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) data, whenever available. We find that the X-ray spectra of our DOGs can be fitted with a simple absorbed power law or with a physically motivated borus02 model. The line-of-sight column densities (N H) in our sources span across a wide range (1.02 × 1022 cm−2 ≤ N H ≤ 1.21 × 1024 cm−2), with a substantial fraction (∼17.6 per cent) of them being heavily obscured (N H ≥ 1023 cm−2). We also identified one new Compton-thick (CT)-AGN candidate, yielding the CT-AGN fraction in our sample to be only 3 per cent. The absorption-corrected 2.0–10 keV X-ray luminosities of our sources (2.00 × 1043 erg s−1 ≤ |$L_{\rm 2-10~keV}^{\rm int}$| ≤ 6.17 ×  1045 erg s−1) suggest them to be luminous quasars. The N H versus Eddington ratio diagnostic plot infers that our sample consists of a heterogeneous population that includes a small fraction (∼12 per cent) of DOGs belonging to an early phase (Hot DOGs) during which accretion and obscuration peaks, while the remaining DOGs belong to an intermediate or late phase during which radiative feedback from the dominant AGN blows away surrounding obscuring material. Intensive broad-band reverberation mapping campaigns have shown that AGN variability is significantly more complex than expected from disc reverberation of the variable X-ray illumination. The UV/optical variability is highly correlated and lagged, with longer lags at longer wavelengths as predicted, but the observed time-scales are longer than expected. Worse, the UV/optical light curves are not well correlated with the X-rays, which should drive them. Instead, we consider an intrinsically variable accretion disc, where slow mass accretion rate fluctuations are generated in the optical-UV disc, propagating down to modulate intrinsically faster X-ray variability from the central regions. We match our model to Fairall 9, a well-studied AGN with L ∼ 0.1 L Edd, where the spectrum is dominated by the UV/EUV. Our model produces light curves where the X-rays and UV have very different fast variability, yet are well correlated on longer time-scales, as observed. It predicts that the intrinsic variability has optical/UV leading the X-rays, but including reverberation of the variable EUV from an inner wind produces a lagged bound-free continuum that matches the observed UV-optical lags. We conclude that optical/UV AGN variability is likely driven by intrinsic fluctuations within the disc, not X-ray reprocessing: the observed longer than expected lags are produced by reverberation of the EUV illuminating a wind, not by X-ray illumination of the disc: the increasing lag with increasing wavelength is produced by the increased contribution of the (constant lag) bound-free continuum to the spectrum, rather than indicating intrinsically larger reverberation distances for longer wavelengths. We present the Granger causality (GC) test for the X-ray reverberation analysis of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). If the light curves in the continuum-dominated band help predict (Granger cause) those dominated by reflection, the Granger lags that associate to the intrinsic reverberation lags can be inferred. We focus on six AGNs observed by XMM–Newton , including the sources well-known to exhibit clear X-ray reverberation lags (IRAS 13224−3809 and 1H 0707−495) and those in which reverberation signatures are not well confirmed (MCG–6-30-15, IZW1, Mrk 704, and Mrk 1040). We employ the sliding-window algorithm and estimate the Granger (intrinsic) Fe-L lags along the light curve as the window moves through. This reveals the evolving lags towards the end of some individual observations, suggesting that the corona varies progressively. Occasionally, we observe two clearly separate lags that suggest an extended corona consisting of two zones while producing competing reverberation of two lags. While the GC test is purely hypothetical and might not explain true causality, our conclusion is that the lags are present and could be understood as reverberation lags. Assuming the lags changing solely with the corona, we find that the IRAS 13224−3809 corona varies between ∼10 and 25  r g and sometimes move to ≳50  r g. The corona of 1H 0707−495 and MCG–6-30-15 may be analogous to that of IRAS 13224−3809, while in IZw1, Mrk 704, and Mrk 1040, a more compact corona is expected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With an X-ray stacking analysis of |$\simeq 12\, 000$| Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) using the Chandra Legacy Survey image, we investigate average supermassive black hole (SMBH) accretion properties of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at 4 ≲ z ≲ 7. Although no X-ray signal is detected in any stacked image, we obtain strong 3σ upper limits for the average black hole accretion rate (BHAR) as a function of star formation rate (SFR). At z ∼ 4 (5) where the stacked image is deeper, the 3σ BHAR upper limits per SFR are ∼1.5 (1.0) dex lower than the local black hole-to-stellar mass ratio, indicating that the SMBHs of SFGs in the inactive (BHAR |$\lesssim 1 \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$| yr−1) phase are growing much more slowly than expected from simultaneous evolution. We obtain a similar result for BHAR per dark halo accretion rate. QSOs from the literature are found to have ∼1 dex higher SFRs and ≳ 2 dex higher BHARs than LBGs with the same dark halo mass. We also make a similar comparison for dusty starburst galaxies and quiescent galaxies from the literature. A duty-cycle corrected analysis shows that for a given dark halo, the SMBH mass increase in the QSO phase dominates over that in the much longer inactive phase. Finally, a comparison with the TNG300, TNG100, SIMBA100, and EAGLE100 simulations finds that they overshoot our BHAR upper limits by ≲ 1.5 dex, possibly implying that simulated SMBHs are too massive. We present a long-term X-ray study of a nearby Active Galactic Nucleus Mrk 6, utilizing observations from XMM–Newton, Suzaku, Swift , and NuSTAR observatories, spanning 22 years from 2001 to 2022. From timing analysis, we estimated variance, normalized variance, and fractional rms amplitude in different energy bands.The temporal study shows fractional rms amplitude (F var) below 10 per cent for the shorter time-scale (∼60 ks) and above 20 per cent for the longer time-scale (∼weeks). A complex correlation is observed between the soft (0.5–3.0 keV) and hard (3.0–10.0 keV) X-ray bands of different epochs of observations. This result prompts a detailed investigation through spectral analysis, employing various phenomenological and physical models on the X-ray spectra. Our analysis reveals a heterogeneous structure of the obscuring material surrounding Mrk 6. A partially ionized absorber exhibits a rapid change in location and extends up to the narrow-line regions or torus. In contrast, another component, located far from the central engine, remained relatively stable. Active galactic nucleus (AGN) outflows including jets and ionized winds have been key phenomena such as jet collimation and AGN feedback to the host galaxy in astrophysics. Radio galaxies, a type of AGN with misaligned jets, have provided valuable insights into the properties and relationships of these outflows. However, several aspects regarding AGN outflows remain unclarified, such as the relationship between jets and ultrafast outflows (UFOs) and the differences between the properties of radio-loud AGN disc winds and radio-quiet AGN ionized winds. To clarify these aspects, radio galaxies containing UFOs and warm absorbers (WAs) must be studied. Currently, both UFOs and WAs have been reported in only two radio galaxies, 3C 390.3 and 4C +74.26. To enhance our understanding of the connection between the jets and ionized winds, we conducted a study on Mrk 6, a potential candidate for the third case of a radio galaxy displaying these characteristics. Using X-ray spectra obtained from XMM–Newton , we performed photoionization modelling using the spex code. The best-fitting model analysis results revealed the presence of a UFO component with a relatively low ionization parameter (Fe  xix / xviii lines blueshifted by |$-34700^{+400}_{-200}~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$|⁠) and a WA component with an outflow velocity of −7600 ± 200 km s−1. We present a comparative study of the constrained parameters of active galactic nuclei (AGN) made by the public X-ray reverberation model kynxilrev and kynrefrev that make use of the reflection code xillver and reflionx , respectively. By varying the central mass (M BH), coronal height (h), inclination (i), photon index of the continuum emission (Γ), and source luminosity (L), the corresponding lag-frequency spectra can be produced. We select only the simulated AGN, where their lag amplitude (τ) and M BH follow the known mass-scaling law. In these mock samples, we show that τ and h are correlated and can possibly be used as an independent scaling law. Furthermore, h (in gravitational units) is also found to be positively scaled with M BH, suggesting a more compact corona in lower-mass AGN. Both models reveal that the coronal height mostly varies between ∼5 and 15  r g, with the average height at ∼10  r g and can potentially be found from low- to high-mass AGN. Nevertheless, the kynxilrev seems to suggest a lower M BH and h than the kynrefrev. This inconsistency is more prominent in lower-spin AGN. The significant correlation between the source height and luminosity is revealed only by kynrefrev , suggesting the h – L relation is probably model-dependent. Compact radio active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are thought to be young radio AGN at the early stage of AGN evolution, thus are ideal laboratory to study the high-energy emission throughout the evolution of radio AGN. In this work, we report for the first time the detection of the high-energy cutoff (E cut), a direct indicator of thermal coronal radiation, of X-ray emission in Mrk 348 (z  = 0.015), a young radio galaxy classified as compact symmetric object. With a 100 ks Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array exposure, we find that the high-energy cutoff (E cut) is firmly detected (⁠|$218^{+124}_{-62}$| keV). Fitting with various Comptonization models indicates the presence of a hot corona with temperature kT e = 35–40 keV. These strongly support the corona origin for its hard X-ray emission. The comparison in the E cut – spectra index Γ plot of Mrk 348 with normal large-scale radio galaxies (mostly Fanaroff–Riley type II) yields no difference between them. This suggests the corona properties in radio sources may not evolve over time (i.e. from the infant stage to mature stage), which is to-be-confirmed with future sample studies of young radio AGNs. X-ray properties of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) depend on their underlying physical parameters, particularly the accretion rate. We identified eight reverberation-mapped AGNs with some of the largest known accretion rates without high-quality X-ray data. We obtained new Chandra ACIS-S X-ray observations and nearly simultaneous optical spectrophotometry to investigate the properties of these AGNs with extreme super-Eddington accreting massive black holes (SEAMBHs). We combined our new X-ray measurements with those of other reverberation-mapped AGNs, which have the best-determined masses and accretion rates. The trend of the steepening of the spectral slope between X-ray and optical-UV, αox, with increasing optical-UV luminosity, |$L_{\rm 2500{\mathring{\rm A}}}$|⁠ , holds true for even the most extreme SEAMBHs. One of our new SEAMBHs appears X-ray-weak for its luminosity, perhaps due to absorption associated with orientation effects involving a slim disc thought to be present in highly accreting systems. The correlation of the |$\rm 2\!-\!8~ keV$| X-ray photon index with the accretion rate also holds for the extreme SEAMBHs, which show some of the largest photon indices reported for AGNs. We present an analysis of the XMM–Newton observation of luminous infrared merging galaxies Arp 302 and a joint re-analysis of its Chandra observation. In particular, we focus on the more significant X-ray emitter of the pair, Arp 302N. Chandra detects significant soft X-ray emission from the hot gas in the star-forming region of Arp 302N spreading up to 12 kpc. We estimate the star formation rate of Arp 302N to be around 1–2 M⊙ yr−1 based on the X-ray luminosity of the star-forming region, similar to previous measurements at longer wavelengths. Chandra and XMM – Newton observations show evidence of a Si  xiii emission line with 86 per cent confidence. Our best-fitting model infers a super-solar silicon abundance in the star-forming region, likely related to the past core-collapse supernovae in this galaxy. Similar silicon overabundance was reported in the circumstellar medium of core-collapse supernova remnants in our Galaxy. We also detect narrow Fe Kα and Fe Kβ (98.6 per cent confidence) emission lines as part of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) emission. Our best-fitting spectral model using mytorus indicates the evidence of a heavily obscured power-law emission with N H > 3 × 1024 cm−2 in addition to a weak, unobscured power-law emission. The scattering fraction of the unobscured power-law emission from Compton-thin materials is 0.7 per cent. All these spectral features suggest evidence of a Seyfert 2-like AGN in Arp 302N. In active galactic nuclei, the relationship between UV and X-ray luminosity is well studied (often characterised by αox) but often with heterogeneous samples. We have parametrized the intrinsic distribution of X-ray luminosity, L X, for the optically selected sample of SDSS quasars in the Stripe 82 and XXL fields across redshifts 0.5–3.5. We make use of the available XMM observations and a custom pipeline to produce Bayesian sensitivity curves that are used to derive the intrinsic X-ray distribution in a hierarchical Bayesian framework. We find that the X-ray luminosity distribution is well described by a Gaussian function in log10  L X space with a mean that is dependent on the monochromatic 2500 Å UV luminosity, L 2500. We also observe some redshift dependence of the distribution. The mean of the L X distribution increases with redshift while the width decreases. This weak but significant redshift dependence leads to L 2500– L X and L 2500–αox relations that evolve with redshift, and we produce a redshift- and L 2500-dependent αox equation. Neither black hole mass nor Eddington ratio appear to be potential drivers of the redshift evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the first results of a high-cadence Swift monitoring campaign (3–4 visits per day for 75 d) of the type 1.5 Seyfert galaxy NGC 6814 characterizing its variability throughout the X-ray and ultraviolet (UV)/optical wavebands. Structure function analysis reveals an X-ray power law (⁠|$\alpha =0.5^{+0.2}_{-0.1}$|⁠) that is significantly flatter than the one measured in the UV/optical bands (〈α〉 ≈ 1.5), suggesting different physical mechanisms driving the observed variability in each emission region. The structure function break-time is consistent across the UV/optical bands (〈τ〉 ≈ 2.3 d), suggesting a very compact emission region in the disc. Correlated short time-scale variability measured through cross-correlation analysis finds a lag–wavelength spectrum that is inconsistent with a standard disc reprocessing scenario (τ ∝ λ4/3) due to significant flattening in the optical wavebands. Flux–flux analysis finds an extremely blue active galactic nucleus (AGN) spectral component (F ν ∝ λ−0.85) that does not follow a standard accretion disc profile (F ν ∝ λ−1/3). While extreme outer disc truncation (R out = 202 ± 5 rg) at a standard accretion rate (⁠|$\dot{m}_{\mathrm{Edd}}=0.0255\pm 0.0006$|⁠) may explain the shape of the AGN spectral component, the lag–wavelength spectrum requires more modest truncation (⁠|$R_{\mathrm{out}}=1382^{+398}_{-404}\,r_g$|⁠) at an extreme accretion rate (⁠|$\dot{m}_{\mathrm{Edd}}=1.3^{+2.1}_{-0.9}$|⁠). No combination of parameters can simultaneously explain both results in a self-consistent way. Our results point towards the possibility of a non-standard disc geometry in NGC 6814. We study the connection between the variations in the far-ultraviolet (FUV), near-ultraviolet (NUV), and X-ray band emission from NGC 4051 using 4 d long AstroSat observations performed during 5–9 June 2016. NGC 4051 showed rapid variability in all three bands with the strongest variability amplitude in the X-ray band (⁠|$F_{\mathrm{ var}} \sim 37~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠) and much weaker variability in the UV bands (⁠|$F_{\mathrm{ var}} \sim 3{\!-\!}5~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠). Cross-correlation analysis performed using interpolated cross-correlation functions and discrete cross-correlation functions revealed a robust correlation (∼0.75) between the UV and X-ray light curves. The variations in the X-ray band are found to lead those in the FUV and NUV bands by ∼7.4 ks and ∼24.2 ks, respectively. The UV lags favour the thermal disc reprocessing model. The FUV and NUV bands are strongly correlated (∼0.9) and the variations in the FUV band lead those in the NUV band by ∼13 ks. Comparison of the UV lags found using the AstroSat observations with those reported earlier and the theoretical model for thermal reverberation timelag suggests a possible change in either the geometry of the accretion disc/corona or the height of the corona. We investigate the physical properties, such as star-forming activity, disc versus bulge nature, galaxy size, and obscuration of 3811 SRG/ eROSITA -detected AGNs at 0.2 < z < 0.8 in the eFEDS field. Using Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam imaging data in the grizy bands, we measure the structural and stellar properties for their host galaxies by performing a 2D AGN-host image decomposition. We find that (1) AGNs can contribute significantly to the total optical light down to |${\rm log}\, L_{\rm X}\sim 42.5\ \rm erg\ s^{-1}$|⁠ , thus ignoring the AGN component can significantly bias the structural measurements; (2) AGN hosts are predominately star-forming galaxies at |${\rm log}\, \mathcal {M}_\star \lesssim 11.3\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$|⁠ ; (3) the bulk of AGNs (64 per cent) reside in galaxies with significant stellar discs (⁠|$\rm S\acute{e}rsic$|  index n < 2), while their host galaxies become increasingly bulge dominated (n ∼ 4) and quiescent at |${\rm log}\, \mathcal {M}_\star \gtrsim 11.0\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$|⁠ ; (4) the size–stellar mass relation of AGN hosts tends to lie between that of inactive (i.e. non-AGN) star-forming, and quiescent galaxies, suggesting that the physical mechanism responsible for building the central stellar density also efficiently fuel the black hole growth; (5) the hosts of X-ray unobscured AGNs are biased towards face-on systems, suggesting that some of the obscuration of the nuclei could come from galaxy-scale gas and dust. This will bias against the detection of unobscured AGNs in gas-rich star-forming galaxies, which may partly account for the deficiency of star-forming discs as host galaxies for the most massive AGNs (missing star-forming fraction up to |$\sim 40{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠). Our results are consistent with a scenario in which the black hole and galaxy transform in structure and star-forming activity while grow in mass, as desired to establish the local |$\mathcal {M}_{\rm BH}-\mathcal {M}_{\rm bulge}$| relation. We present a sample of 99 dwarf galaxies (M * < 109.5  M ⊙) with X-ray activity in their central regions. The sample was obtained from a match of the SRG/eROSITA X-ray catalogue in the eastern galactic hemisphere with the MPA-JHU SDSS catalogue. The obtained matches were cleaned rigorously with the help of external optical catalogues to increase the purity of the sample. This work is the largest study of this kind – X-ray activity in ≈85 per cent of matched dwarfs was not reported before. The majority of X-ray active dwarfs are identified as star-forming galaxies. However, the X-ray luminosity of 82 objects cannot be explained by the collective emission of X-ray binaries, rendering them strong candidates for dwarf galaxies with an active accreting black hole in their centre. We find that the fraction of AGN among dwarf galaxies drops from ∼2 · 10−2 at LX ∼ 1039 erg s–1 to ∼(2 − 4) · 10−4 at LX ∼ 1041 erg s–1 and increases with the stellar mass of the host galaxy. We serendipitously discovered sources with unexpected properties. We report on a tidal disruption event (TDE) candidate in a dwarf galaxy, a massive black hole in a dwarf galaxy with a soft thermal spectrum, a luminous dwarf galaxy with an obscured X-ray spectrum and a few other peculiar sources. We found three Ultra-luminous X-ray (ULX) source candidates and a sample of X-ray bright galaxy pairs, in four of which both members shine in X-rays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Symbolic regression (SR) is a regression analysis based on genetic algorithms to search for mathematical expressions that best fit a given data set, by allowing the expressions themselves to mutate. We use the SR to analyse the parameter relations of the X-ray reverberating active galactic nuclei where the soft Fe-L lags were observed by the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission (XMM–Newton). First, we revisit the lag–mass scaling relations by using the SR to derive all possible mathematical expressions and test them in terms of accuracy, simplicity, and robustness. We find that the correlation between the lags, τ, and the black hole mass, M BH, is certain, but the relation should be written in the form of log(τ) = α + β(log(M BH/ M ⊙))γ, where 1 ≲ γ ≲ 2. Moreover, incorporating more parameters such as the reflection fraction (RF) and the Eddington ratio (λEdd) to the lag–mass scaling relation is made possible by the SR. It reveals that α, rather than being a constant, can be −2.15 + 0.02RF or 0.03(RF + λEdd), with the fine-tuned different β and γ. These further support the relativistic disc–reflection framework in which such functional dependences can be straightforwardly explained. Furthermore, we derive their host-galaxy mass, M *, by fitting the spectral energy distribution. We find that the SR model supports a non-linear M BH– M * relationship, while log(M BH/ M *) varies between −5.4 and −1.5, with an average value of ∼−3.7. We present a broad analysis of X-ray polarimetric observational prospects for radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGN), focusing on the role of parsec-scale components. We provide a revision of self-consistent type-1 and type-2 generic AGN radiative transfer models that were obtained with a Monte Carlo code stokes , evaluating the effects of absorption and scattering. Our model consists of a central disc–corona emission obtained with the kynstokes code in the lamp-post geometry, an equatorial wedge-shaped dusty torus and two symmetric conical polar outflows. We argue that the information on the mutual orientation, shape, relative size, and composition of such components, usually obtained from spectroscopy or polarimetry in other wavelengths, is essential for the X-ray polarization analysis of the obscured type-2 AGNs. We provide general detectability prospects for AGNs with 2–8 keV polarimeters onboard of the currently flying Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) satellite and the forthcoming enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission. Finally, we assess the role of contemporary X-ray polarimetry in our understandings of the unified AGN model after the first year and a half of IXPE operation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Fe Kα fluorescent emission line from neutral matter is widely used as a diagnostic tool in X-ray spectroscopy for many astrophysical X-ray sources. The line properties can potentially be used to constrain the geometry, column density, and kinematics of the material in which the line is formed. The intrinsic width and the shape of the intrinsic line profile has been neglected thus far, because it is much smaller than the instrumental broadening in all space-based X-ray detectors before Hitomi. However, the instrumental broadening of X-ray microcalorimeters is comparable to the intrinsic line width. We have performed new calculations based on Monte Carlo simulations of the MYTORUS X-ray reprocessor spectral-fitting model that utilize parametrizations of historical high-precision laboratory measurements of the intrinsic profiles of the Fe Kα and Fe Kβ lines. A publicly available table is provided that can seamlessly replace the existing Fe Kα and Fe Kβ line spectrum in the MYTORUS model. The new table can also be used in a standalone mode (without the MYTORUS model) in order to derive empirical velocity widths, if the line-emitting matter is Compton thin. Neglecting to account for the intrinsic profiles of the Fe Kα and Fe Kβ lines can result in a significant overestimate of the velocity broadening, if the true velocity broadening is less than |${\sim} 2000 \ \rm km \ s^{-1}$|⁠. The interband correlations between optical/ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray luminosities of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are important for understanding the disc–coronal connection, as well as using AGN as standard candles for cosmology. It is conventional to measure the X-ray luminosity at rest-frame 2 keV and compare to the UV luminosity at the rest-frame 2500 Å, but the wavelength dependence was never well explored. In this work, we adopt a well-defined sample of 1169 unobscured quasars in the redshift range 0.13–4.51, and apply the direct-correlation method to explore how the correlation with the 2 keV luminosity changes at different optical/UV wavelengths, from 1280 to 5550 Å where the spectral quality is high. We find that the luminosity at all UV continuum wavelengths correlates with the X-ray luminosity similarly to that at 2500 Å, and that these correlations are better than at the optical wavelengths. Strong self-correlation is also found in the broad-band optical/UV continuum, supporting the scenario that it is dominated by the disc emission. Correlations of various emission lines are also investigated (e.g. C iv , C iii ], Mg ii , Hβ, and [O iii ]λλ4959/5007), including the Baldwin effect and correlations involving linewidths. We find the forms of these line correlations are different, and they are also different from their underlying continua, suggesting various complexities in the line-generation process. We discuss these results in the disc-wind scenario. Our study confirms that the rest-frame 2500 Å is a good wavelength to represent the optical/UV continual properties of quasars, and shows the advantages of the direct-correlation method. We present the expected X-ray polarization signal resulting from distant reprocessing material around black holes. Using a central isotropic power-law emission at the centre of the simulated model, we add distant equatorial and axially symmetric media that are covering the central accreting sources. We include partial ionization and partial transparency effects, and the impact of various polarization and steepness of the primary radiation spectrum. The results are obtained with the Monte Carlo code STOKES that considers both line and continuum processes and computes the effects of scattering and absorption inside static homogenous wedge-shaped and elliptical toroidal structures, varying in relative size, composition and distance to the source. We provide first order estimates for parsec-scale reprocessing in Compton-thin and Compton-thick active galactic nuclei, as well as winds around accreting stellar-mass compact objects, for observer's inclinations above and below the grazing angle. The resulting reprocessed polarization can reach tens of per cent with either parallel or perpendicular orientation with respect to the axis of symmetry, depending on subtle details of the geometry, density, and ionization structure. We also show how principal parameters constrained from X-ray spectroscopy or polarimetry in other wavelengths can lift the shown degeneracies in X-ray polarization. We provide an application example of the broad modelling discussion by revisiting the recent IXPE 2–8 keV X-ray polarimetric observation of the accreting stellar-mass black hole in Cygnus X-3 from the perspective of partial transparency and ionization of the obscuring outflows. We present an X-ray spectro-polarimetric analysis of the bright Seyfert galaxy IC 4329A. The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observed the source for ∼500 ks, supported by XMM–Newton (∼60 ks) and NuSTAR (∼80 ks) exposures. We detect polarization in the 2–8 keV band with 2.97σ confidence. We report a polarization degree of 3.3 ± 1.1 per cent and a polarization angle of 78° ± 10° (errors are 1σ confidence). The X-ray polarization is consistent with being aligned with the radio jet, albeit partially due to large uncertainties on the radio position angle. We jointly fit the spectra from the three observatories to constrain the presence of a relativistic reflection component. From this, we obtain constraints on the inclination angle to the inner disc (<39° at 99 per cent confidence) and the disc inner radius (<11 gravitational radii at 99 per cent confidence), although we note that modelling systematics in practice add to the quoted statistical error. Our spectropolarimetric modelling indicates that the 2–8 keV polarization is consistent with being dominated by emission directly observed from the X-ray corona, but the polarization of the reflection component is completely unconstrained. Our constraints on viewer inclination and polarization degree tentatively favour more asymmetric, possibly out-flowing, coronal geometries that produce more highly polarized emission, but the coronal geometry is unconstrained at the 3σ level. We report on the second observation of the radio-quiet active galactic nucleus MCG-05-23-16 performed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). The observation started on 2022 November 6 for a net observing time of 640 ks, and was partly simultaneous with NuSTAR (86 ks). After combining these data with those obtained in the first IXPE pointing on 2022 May (simultaneous with XMM–Newton and NuSTAR) we find a 2–8 keV polarization degree Π = 1.6 ± 0.7 (at 68 per cent confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit Π = 3.2 per cent (at 99 per cent confidence level). We then compare the polarization results with Monte Carlo simulations obtained with the monk code, with which different coronal geometries have been explored (spherical lamppost, conical, slab, and wedge). Furthermore, the allowed range of inclination angles is found for each geometry. If the best-fitting inclination value from a spectroscopic analysis is considered, a cone-shaped corona along the disc axis is disfavoured. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The multiwavelength data of nuclear transient AT2018dyk, initially discovered as a changing-look low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER) galaxy, has been revisited by us and found being in agreement with a tidal disruption event (TDE) scenario. The optical light curve of AT2018dyk declines as a power-law form approximately with index –5/3 yet its X-ray emission lags behind the optical peak by ∼140 d, both of which are typical characteristics for TDEs. The X-ray spectra are softer than normal active galactic nuclei (AGNs) although they show a slight trend of hardening. Interestingly, its rising time-scale belongs to the longest among TDEs while it is nicely consistent with the theoretical prediction from its relatively large supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass (∼107.38M⊙). Moreover, a prominent infrared echo with peak luminosity ∼7.4 × 1042 erg s−1 has been also detected in AT2018dyk, implying an unusually dusty subparsec nuclear environment in contrast with other TDEs. In our sample, LINERs share similar covering factors with AGNs, which indicates the existence of the dusty torus in these objects. Our work suggests that the nature of nuclear transients in LINERs needs to be carefully identified and their infrared echoes offer us a unique opportunity for exploring the environment of SMBHs at low accretion rate, which has been so far poorly explored but is crucial for understanding the SMBH activity. Eclipsing of the X-ray emitting region in active galactic nuclei (AGN) is a potentially powerful probe to examine the AGN environment and absorber properties. Here, we study the eclipse data from the 2016 XMM–Newton observation of NGC 6814 using a colour–colour analysis. Colours (i.e. hardness ratios) can provide the advantage of better time resolution over spectral analysis alone. Colour–colour grids are constructed to examine the effects of different parameters on the observed spectral variability during the eclipse. Consistent with previous spectral analysis, the variations are dominated by changes in the column density and covering fraction of the absorber. However, during maximum eclipse the behaviour of the absorber changes. Just after ingress, the eclipse is described by changes in column density and covering fraction, but prior to egress, the variations are dominated by changes in column density alone. Simulations are carried out to consider possible absorber geometries that might produce this behaviour. The behaviour is inconsistent with a single homogeneous cloud, but simulations suggest that multiple clouds, perhaps embedded in a highly ionized halo, could reproduce the results. In addition, we determine the orbital covering factor (fraction of orbital path-length) based on evidence of several eclipses in the 2016; 64-d Swift light curve. We estimate that ∼2–4 per cent of the orbit is covered by obscuring clouds and that the distribution of clouds is not isotropic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A unique X-ray occultation event in NGC 6814 during an XMM – Newton observation in 2016 has been reported, providing useful information of the absorber and the corona. We revisit the event with the aid of the hardness ratio (HR)–count rate (CR) plot and comparison with two other absorption-free XMM exposures in 2009 and 2021. NGC 6814 exhibits a clear 'softer-when-brighter' variation pattern during the exposures, but the 2016 exposure significantly deviates from the other two in the HR–CR plot. While spectral fitting does yield transient Compton-thin absorption corresponding to the eclipse event in 2016, rather than easing the tension between exposures in the HR–CR plot, correcting the transient Compton-thin absorption results in new and severe deviation within the 2016 exposure. We show that the eclipsing absorber shall be clumpy (instead of a single Compton-thin cloud), with an inner denser region composed of both Compton-thin and Compton-thick clouds responsible for the previously identified occultation event, and an outer sparser region with Compton-thin clouds which eclipses the whole 2016 exposure. With this model, all the tension in the HR–CR plots could be naturally erased, with the observed spectral variability during the 2016 exposure dominated by the variation of absorption. Furthermore, the two warm absorbers (with different ionization and column densities but similar outflowing velocities) detected in the 2016 exposure shall also associate with the transient absorber, likely due to ablated or tidal stretched/disrupted fragments. We report the soft X-ray excess feature and an opposite tendency between the optical/UV and X-ray bands during the flare that occurred in 2014 in flat-spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) 4C+21.35 with the observations by Swift - XRT and Swift-UVOT. These unusual phenomena are rarely reported in FSRQs. The flare was covered from the optical to the X-ray while no prominent activity in the γ-ray was observed, which could be an indication of weaker jet activity during the flare. We carry out the spectral energy distribution ranging from the optical to X-ray based on four models which are the warm corona model (Model-1), the relativistic reflection model (Model-2), the corona with the jet model (Model-3), and the relativistic reflection with the jet model (Model-4). We find some extreme variation of the parameters in Model-2 and Model-4 and they are unable to explain the correlations between the optical/UV and X-ray bands. Model-1 and Model-3 can obtain reasonable parameters and provide an explanation for the observed opposite tendency between the optical/UV and X-ray bands. However, considering the weak jet activity during the X-ray flare, Model-1 is much preferred for describing the soft X-ray excess, hard X-ray emission, as well as the opposite tendency between the optical/UV and X-rays. Based on Model-1, it is suggested that the flare in 2014 is probably due to the variation of the geometry of the corona, which is expected to be more strictly tested with further observations in the future. The article titled "Correction to: Characterizing X-ray, UV, and optical variability in NGC 6814 using high-cadence Swift observations from a 2022 monitoring campaign" published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society discusses a correction to a previous study on NGC 6814. The authors discovered that an outdated Calibration Database (CALDB) version was used in the original study, leading to significantly larger UV flux densities. The updated results show that the intrinsic AGN variability spectrum aligns with a standard accretion disc, except in the U band. The authors also discuss the inter-band continuum lags and suggest that a significant contribution from diffuse continuum emission in NGC 6814 may explain the observed discrepancies. We study simultaneous soft (0.7–7 keV) and hard (7–20 keV) X-ray light curves at a total of eight epochs during 2016–2019 of two TeV blazars Mrk 421 and 1ES 1959+650 observed by the SXT and LAXPC instruments on-board AstroSat. The light curves are 45–450 ks long and may be sampled with time bins as short as 600–800 s with high signal-to-noise ratio. The blazars show a harder when brighter trend at all epochs. Discrete cross-correlation functions indicate that the hard and soft X-ray variability are strongly correlated. The time lag is consistent with zero in some epochs, and indicates hard or soft lag of a few hours in the rest. In the leptonic model of blazar emission, soft lag may be due to slower radiative cooling of lower energy electrons while hard lag may be caused by gradual acceleration of the high energy electrons emitting at the hard X-ray band. Assuming the above scenario and the value of the Doppler factor (δ) to be 10–20, the hard and soft lags may be used to estimate the magnetic field to be ∼0.1 Gauss and the acceleration parameter to be ∼104 in the emission region. Due to the availability of the high time resolution (∼ minutes to hours) light curves from AstroSat , the value of the illusive acceleration parameter could be estimated, which provides a stringent constraint on the theories of particle acceleration in blazar jets. Interstellar medium (ISM) and circumgalactic medium (CGM) around galaxies are linked to several physical processes that drive galaxy evolution. For example, the X-ray emission from the CGM gas around ellipticals has been linked to the active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback occurring in the host. Upcoming telescopes, such as Hot Universe Baryon Survey (HUBS) with ∼2 eV resolution, can provide us with deep insights about the hot gas properties of such galaxies that constrain these processes. In this project, we discuss X-ray emission of the ISM and CGM of elliptical galaxies simulated using macer code. We generate X-ray emission data from the macer simulations with various feedback models and produce mock observations for an instrument with high spectral resolution, which is a necessary step of selecting sources for the future observations with planned mission such as HUBS. More importantly, we establish connections between the physics of AGN and stellar feedback with the emission spectra from the ISM and CGM to investigate the possibility of using observations to constrain feedback models. We fit the X-ray spectra from these simulations with standard fitting procedures and compare the retrieved physical properties with their counterparts from the simulations to understand whether the future high-resolution observations can reliably reveal the properties of the gas in the galaxies. We report on a multiwavelength study of the high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac 1ES 1218+304 using near-simultaneous data obtained during the period from 2018 January 1 to 2021 May 31 (MJD 58119–59365) from various instruments, including Fermi–LAT, Swift–XRT, AstroSat , and optical data from Swift-UVOT and the TUBITAK observatory in Turkey. The source was reported to be flaring in the TeV γ-ray band during 2019, but no significant variation was observed with Fermi–LAT. A sub-hour variability is seen in the SXT light curve, suggesting a compact emission region for the variability. However, hour-scale variability is observed in the γ-ray light curve. A 'softer-when-brighter' trend is observed in the γ-ray, and an opposite trend is seen in the X-ray, suggesting that the two emissions are produced through two different processes, as expected from a high-frequency-peaked BL Lac source. We have chosen the two epochs in 2019 January to study and compare their physical parameters. A joint fit of SXT and LAXPC provides a constraint on the synchrotron peak, estimated to be ∼1.6 keV. A clear shift in the synchrotron peak is observed from ∼1 keV to above 10 keV, revealing its extreme nature or behaviour like an extreme blazar-type source. The optical observation provides a colour-index variation as 'blue-when-brighter'. The broad-band spectral energy distribution is fitted with a single-zone synchrotron-self Compton model, and their parameters are discussed in the context of a TeV blazar and the possible mechanism behind the broad-band emission. The detection of hard X-ray spectra (spectral index <2) from the kiloparsec-scale jet of active galactic nuclei cannot be accounted for by the synchrotron emission mechanism from the electron distribution responsible for the radio/optical emission. Alternate explanations are the inverse Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons (IC/CMB) or synchrotron emission from a second electron population. When the X-ray emission is interpreted as an IC/CMB process, the Compton spectrum often peaks at GeV energy and many sources are predicted to be Fermi candidate sources. The absence of significant gamma-ray flux from some of these galaxies by Fermi disfavours the IC/CMB interpretation of the high-energy emission. We extend this study to predict the very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission due to the IC/CMB model, which can be investigated by the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO). The model parameters deciding the broad-band spectral energy distribution are estimated using an analytical approximation of the emissivity functions. The emission model is extrapolated to VHE and then compared with the CTAO sensitivity. For this particular study, we have selected 18 knots with harder X-ray spectra and for which the IC/CMB model for X-ray emission has been suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the first X-ray observation at sub-arcsecond resolution of the high-redshift (z  = 6.18) radio-loud quasar CFHQS J142952 + 544717 (J1429). The ∼100 net-count 0.3–7 keV spectrum obtained from ∼30 ks Chandra exposure is best fit by a single power-law model with a photon index Γ = 2.0 ± 0.2 and no indication of an intrinsic absorber, implying a 3.6–72 keV rest-frame luminosity |$L_{\rm X}=(2.3^{+0.6}_{-0.5})\times 10^{46}$|  erg s−1. We identify a second X-ray source at 30″ distance from J1429 position, with a soft (Γ ≃ 2.8) and absorbed (equivalent hydrogen column density N H < 13.4 × 1020 cm−2) spectrum, which likely contaminated J1429 spectra obtained in lower angular resolution observations. Based on the analysis of the Chandra image, the bulk of the X-ray luminosity is produced within the central ∼3 kpc region, either by the disc/corona system, or by a moderately aligned jet. In this context, we discuss the source properties in comparison with samples of low- and high-redshift quasars. We find indication of a possible excess of counts over the expectations for a point-like source in a 0.5″–1.5″ (∼3−8 kpc) annular region. The corresponding X-ray luminosity at J1429 redshift is 4 × 1045 erg s−1. If confirmed, this emission could be related to either a large-scale X-ray jet, or a separate X-ray source. In this work, we examine the application of the wavelet transform to the X-ray timing analyses of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and quasi-periodic eruption sources (QPEs). Several scenarios are simulated to test the effectiveness of the wavelet analysis to stationary and non-stationary data. We find that the power spectral density (PSD) slope and the nature of the periodic signal can influence the ability to identify important features in the wavelet power spectrum. In general, weak and transient features can be discerned, which make the wavelet spectrum an important tool in examining AGN light curves. We carried out a wavelet analysis to four unique objects: Ark 120, IRAS 13224-3809, RE J1034+396, and the QPE GSN 069. The well-known quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) in RE J1034 + 396 is significantly detected in the wavelet power spectrum. In IRAS 13224-3809, significant transient features appear during a flare at frequencies coincident with previously detected reverberation signals. Finally, the wavelet power spectrum of the QPE GSN 069 significantly reveals four persistent signals that exhibit a 3:2 ratio in oscillation frequencies, consistent with high-frequency QPOs in stellar mass X-ray binaries, but we cannot rule out the possibility this is an artefact of the calculation. We present the identification and analysis of an X-ray selected AGN sample that lie within the local (z < 0.35) galaxy population. From a parent sample of 22 079 MPA-JHU (based on SDSS DR8) galaxies, we identified 917 galaxies with central, excess X-ray emission (from 3XMM-DR7) likely originating from an AGN. We measured the host galaxies' star formation rates and classified them as either star-forming or quiescent based on their position relative to main sequence of star formation. Only 72 per cent of the X-ray selected sample were identified as AGN using BPT selection; this technique is much less effective in quiescent hosts, only identifying 50 per cent of the X-ray AGN. We also calculated the growth rates of the black holes powering these AGN in terms of their specific accretion rate (∝ LX/M*) and found quiescent galaxies, on average, accrete at a lower rate than star-forming galaxies. Finally, we measured the sensitivity function of 3XMM so we could correct for observational bias and construct probability distributions as a function of accretion rate. AGN were found in galaxies across the full range of star formation rates (⁠|$\log _{10} \, \mathrm{SFR/M_\odot \ yr^{-1}} = -3\ \mathrm{to}\ 2$|⁠) in both star-forming and quiescent galaxies. The incidence of AGN was enhanced by a factor 2 (at a 3.5σ significance) in star-forming galaxies compared to quiescent galaxies of equivalent stellar mass and redshift, but we also found a significant population of AGN hosted by quiescent galaxies. We present an X-ray spectropolarimetric analysis of the bright Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151. The source has been observed with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) for 700 ks, complemented with simultaneous XMM–Newton (50 ks) and NuSTAR (100 ks) pointings. A polarization degree Π = 4.9 ± 1.1 per cent and angle Ψ = 86° ± 7° east of north (68 per cent confidence level) are measured in the 2–8 keV energy range. The spectropolarimetric analysis shows that the polarization could be entirely due to reflection. Given the low reflection flux in the IXPE band, this requires, however, a reflection with a very large (>38 per cent) polarization degree. Assuming more reasonable values, a polarization degree of the hot corona ranging from ∼4 to ∼8 per cent is found. The observed polarization degree excludes a 'spherical' lamppost geometry for the corona, suggesting instead a slab -like geometry, possibly a wedge , as determined via Monte Carlo simulations. This is further confirmed by the X-ray polarization angle, which coincides with the direction of the extended radio emission in this source, supposed to match the disc axis. NGC 4151 is the first active galactic nucleus with an X-ray polarization measure for the corona, illustrating the capabilities of X-ray polarimetry and IXPE in unveiling its geometry. The Granger causality is an econometric test for determining whether one time series is useful for forecasting another one with a certain Granger lag. Here, the light curves in the 0.3–1 keV (reflection dominated, soft) and 1.2–5 keV (continuum dominated, hard) bands of active galactic nuclei are produced, and the Granger lags are estimated and compared to the traditional lag–frequency spectra. We find that the light curves in the hard band Granger-cause (lead) those in the soft band, whereas the obtained Granger lags could be interpreted as the intrinsic reverberation lags. Then, we extract the Granger-lag profiles from 14 XMM–Newton observations of IRAS 13224−3809, and find that the lags are significant in 12 observations. The majority of the obtained Granger (intrinsic) lags are ∼200–500 s. With the IRAS 13224−3809 mass of 2 × 106 M⊙, these lags correspond to the true light travel distance of ∼20–50  r g. Hence, by assuming a lamp-post geometry and a face-on disc, this places the corona at ∼10–25  r g above the central black hole. Moreover, multiple Granger lags consisting of the small and large lags of <500 s and >1000 s are detected in four observations. This means that the corona height can significantly evolve from ∼10–25  r g to ∼55 r g, or vice versa, towards the end of the observation. Granger lags are a promising way to measure the intrinsic lags, and provide evidence of coronal height variability within each individual observation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Australia Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLAS) and the VLA survey in the XMM-LSS/VIDEO deep field provide deep (≈15 |$\mu$| Jy beam−1) and high-resolution (≈4.5–8 arcsec) radio coverage of the three XMM-SERVS fields (W-CDF-S, ELAIS-S1, and XMM-LSS). These data cover a total sky area of 11.3 deg2 and contain ≈11 000 radio components. Furthermore, about 3 deg2 of the XMM-LSS field also has deeper MIGHTEE data that achieve a median RMS of 5.6 |$\mu$| Jy beam−1 and detect more than 20 000 radio sources. We analyse all these radio data and find source counterparts at other wavebands utilizing deep optical and infrared (IR) surveys. The nature of these radio sources is studied using radio-band properties (spectral slope and morphology) and the IR–radio correlation. Radio AGNs are selected and compared with those selected using other methods (e.g. X-ray). We found 1656 new AGNs that were not selected using X-ray and/or MIR methods. We constrain the FIR-to-UV SEDs of radio AGNs using cigale and investigate the dependence of radio AGN fraction upon galaxy stellar mass and star formation rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite advances in our understanding of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs), the fundamental details about the mechanisms of radiation and flare/outburst in hot accretion flow are still largely missing. We have systematically analysed the archival Chandra and NuSTAR X-ray data of the nearby LLAGN M81*, whose L bol ∼ 10−5 L Edd. Through a detailed study of X-ray light curve and spectral properties, we find that the X-ray continuum emission of the power-law shape more likely originates from inverse Compton scattering within the hot accretion flow. In contrast to Sgr A*, flares are rare in M81*. Low-amplitude variation can only be observed in soft X-ray band (amplitude usually ≲2). Several simple models are tested, including sinusoidal-like and quasi-periodical. Based on a comparison of the dramatic differences of flare properties among Sgr A*, M31*, and M81*, we find that, when the differences in both the accretion rate and the black hole mass are considered, the flares in LLAGNs can be understood universally in a magnetohydrodynamical model. We performed a detailed broad-band spectral and timing analysis of a small flaring event of ∼120 ks in the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 using simultaneous XMM–Newton and NuSTAR observations. The ∼300 ks long NuSTAR observation and the overlapping XMM–Newton exposure were segregated into pre-flare, flare, and post-flare segments. During the flare, the NuSTAR count rate peaked at 2.5 times the mean count rate before the flare. Using various physical and phenomenological models, we examined the 0.3–50 keV X-ray spectrum, which consists of a primary continuum, reprocessed emission, warm absorber and ultrafast outflows at different time-scales. The mass of the central black hole is estimated to be ≥1.32 × 105 M⊙ from spectral analysis. The absence of correlation between the flux in the 6–7 keV and 10–50 keV bands suggests different origins of the iron emission line and the Compton hump. From the spectral analysis, we found that the reflection fraction drops significantly during the flare, accompanied by an increase in the coronal height above the disc. The spectrum became soft during the flare, supporting the 'softer when brighter' nature of the source. After the alleviation of the flare, the coronal height drops and the corona heats up. This indicates that there could be inflation of the corona during the flare. We found no significant change in the inner accretion disc or the seed photon temperature. These results suggest that the flaring event occurred due to a change in coronal properties rather than any notable change in the accretion disc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study accretion disc–corona connection in Seyfert 1 galaxies using simultaneous UV/X-ray observations of NGC 4593 (2016 July 14–18) and NGC 7469 (2017 October 15–19) performed with AstroSat. We use the X-ray (0.5–7.0 keV) data acquired with the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) and the UV (FUV: 130–180 nm, NUV: 200–300 nm) data obtained with the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). We also use the contemporaneous Swift observations of NGC 4593 and demonstrate AstroSat 's capability for X-ray/UV correlation studies. We performed UV/X-ray cross-correlation analysis using the interpolated and the discrete cross-correlation functions and found similar results. In the case of NGC 4593, we found that the variations in the X-rays lead to those in the FUV and NUV bands by ∼38 ks and ∼44 ks, respectively. These UV lags favour the disc-reprocessing model; they are consistent with the previous results within uncertainties. In contrast, we found an opposite trend in NGC 7469 where the soft X-ray variations lag those in the FUV and NUV bands by ∼41 ks and ∼49 ks, respectively. The hard lags in NGC 7469 favour the thermal Comptonization model. Our results may provide direct observational evidence for the variable intrinsic UV emission from the accretion disk, which acts as the seed for thermal Comptonization in a hot corona in a lamp-post-like geometry. The non-detection of disk reverberation photons in NGC 7469, using AstroSat data, is most likely due to a high accretion rate resulting in a hot accretion disc and large intrinsic emission. NGC 5273 is a known optical and X-ray variable AGN. We analyse new and archival IR, optical, UV, and X-ray data in order to characterize its long-term variability from 2000–2022. At least one optical changing-look event occurred between 2011 and 2014 when the AGN changed from a Type 1.8/1.9 Seyfert to a Type 1. It then faded considerably at all wavelengths, followed by a dramatic but slow increase in UV/optical brightness between 2021 and 2022. Near-IR (NIR) spectra in 2022 show prominent broad Paschen lines that are absent in an archival spectrum from 2010, making NGC 5273 one of the few AGNs to be observed changing-look in the NIR. We propose that NGC 5273 underwent multiple changing-look events between 2000 and 2022 – starting as a Type 1.8/1.9, NGC 5273 changes-look to a Type 1 temporarily in 2002 and again in 2014, reverting back to a Type 1.8/1.9 by 2005 and 2017, respectively. In 2022, it is again a Type 1 Seyfert. We characterize the changing-look events and their connection to the dynamic accretion and radiative processes in NGC 5273 and propose that the variable luminosity (and thus, Eddington ratio) of the source is changing how the broad-line region (BLR) reprocesses the continuum emission. A comprehensive study of the nucleus and western hotspot of Pictor A is carried out using AstroSat observations, 13 yr of Fermi , and archival Swift observations along with other published data. We report the first detection of the western hotspot of Pictor A in the far-UV band using observations from AstroSat -UVIT. The broad-band SED of the western hotspot is explained by a multizone emission scenario, where X-ray emission is caused by synchrotron emission process in the substructures embedded in the diffuse region, while the emission in radio to optical is caused by synchrotron emission process in the diffuse region. We do not notice any excess in the IR band and an additional zone (beyond 2-zone) is not required to account for the X-ray emission. Our broad-band spectro-temporal study and associated modelling of the core and hotspot of Pictor A suggests that (a) γ-rays originate in the nuclear jet and not from the hotspot (b) X-ray emission from the core of Pictor A has nuclear jet-origin instead of previously reported disc-origin. We present the Extragalactic Serendipitous Swift Survey (ExSeSS), providing a new well-defined sample constructed from the observations performed using the Swift X-ray Telescope. The ExSeSS sample consists of 79 342 sources detected in the medium (1–2 keV), hard (2–10 keV), or total (0.3–10 keV) energy bands, covering 2086.6 deg2 of sky across a flux range of f 0.3–10 keV ∼ 10−15 − 10−10 erg s−1 cm−2. Using the new ExSeSS sample we present measurements of the differential number counts of X-ray sources as a function of 2–10 keV flux that trace the population of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) in a previously unexplored regime. We find that taking the line-of-sight absorption column density into account has an effect on the differential number count measurements and is vital to obtain agreement with previous results. In the hard band, we obtain a good agreement between the ExSeSS measurements and previous, higher energy data from NuSTAR and Swift /BAT when taking into account the varying column density of the ExSeSS sample as well as the X-ray spectral parameters of each of the samples we are comparing to. We also find discrepancies between the ExSeSS measurements and AGN population synthesis models, indicating a change in the properties of the AGN population over this flux range that is not fully described by current models at these energies, hinting at a larger, moderately obscured population at low redshifts (z ≲ 0.2) that the models are not currently taking into account. Continuum reverberation mapping of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can provide new insight into the nature and geometry of the accretion flow. Some of the X-rays from the central corona irradiating the disc are absorbed, increasing the local disc temperature. This gives an additional reprocessed contribution to the spectral energy distribution (SED) which is lagged and smeared relative to the driving X-ray light curve. We directly calculate this reverberation from the accretion disc, creating fully time-dependent SEDs for a given X-ray light curve. We apply this to recent intensive monitoring data on Fairall 9, and find that it is not possible to produce the observed ultraviolet (UV) variability by X-ray reprocessing of the observed light curve from the disc. Instead, we find that the majority of the variability must be intrinsic to the UV emission process, adding to evidence from changing-look AGN that this region has a structure which is quite unlike a Shakura–Sunyaev disc. We filter out this long time-scale variability and find that reprocessing alone is still insufficient to explain even the fast variability in our assumed geometry of a central source illuminating a flat disc. The amplitude of reprocessing can be increased by any vertical structure such as the broad-line region and/or an inner disc wind, giving a better match. Fundamentally though the model is missing the major contributor to the variability, intrinsic to the UV/EUV emission rather than arising from reprocessing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a multiwavelength study of the active nucleus and the off-nuclear X-ray sources in the nearby spiral galaxy, NGC 1365 using three simultaneous UV/X-ray observations by AstroSat over a two months period and archival IR observations performed with Spitzer and Herschel. Utilizing the data from the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) onboard AstroSat , we find spectral variability mainly caused by the variation in the X-ray column density, (N H ∼ 1022–1023 cm−2). With the accurate spatial resolution of the UVIT onboard AstroSat , we separate the intrinsic AGN flux from the host galaxy emission and then correct for the Galactic and the internal reddening. We detect no significant variation in the NUV emission over the observation period. The AGN in FUV band is undetectable due to heavy intrinsic extinction. Further, the multiwavelength IR/UV/X-ray AGN SED reveals that the AGN is in a low-luminosity phase with accretion rate ∼0.01 L Edd. The steady UV emission and strong X-ray absorption variability suggest that the obscuring clouds are likely compact and affect the compact X-ray source only and do not possibly cover the extended UV emitting region. In addition, the UVIT is able to resolve two bright spots at a radius of 7 arcsec (∼6.3 Kpc) from the central nucleus in the South-West (SW) direction. In the UVIT image of the entire galaxy, we identify UV counterparts to four Chandra identified bright X-ray sources. One well-known ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX) NGC 1365 X2 is identified with its UV counterpart at 86 arcsec from the nucleus in the North-East (NE) direction from the active nucleus. Almost all massive galaxies today are understood to contain supermassive black holes (SMBH) at their centres. SMBHs grew by accreting material from their surroundings, emitting X-rays as they did so. X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) of active galactic nuclei (AGN) have been extensively studied in order to understand the AGN population's cosmological properties and evolution. We present a new fixed rest-frame method to achieve a more accurate study of the AGN XLF evolution over cosmic time. Normally, XLFs are constructed in a fixed observer-frame energy band, which can be problematic because it probes different rest-frame energies at different redshifts. In the new method, we construct XLFs in the fixed rest-frame band instead, by varying the observed energy band with redshift. We target a rest-frame 2–8 keV band using XMM-Newton and HEAO 1 X-ray data, with seven observer-frame energy bands that vary with redshift for 0 < z < 3. We produce the XLFs using two techniques; one to construct a binned XLF, and one using a maximum likelihood (ML) fit, which makes use of the full unbinned source sample. We find that our ML best-fitting pure luminosity evolution results for both methods are consistent with each other, suggesting that performing XLF evolution studies with the high-redshift data limited to high-luminosity AGN is not very sensitive to the choice of fixed observer-frame or rest-frame energy band, which is consistent with our expectation that high-luminosity AGN typically show little absorption. X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) trace the growth and evolution of supermassive black hole populations across cosmic time. However, current XLF models are poorly constrained at redshifts of z > 6, with a lack of spectroscopic constraints at these high redshifts. In this work, we place limits on the bright-end of the XLF at z  = 5.7–6.4 using high-redshift AGN identified within the Extragalactic Serendipitous Swift Survey (ExSeSS) catalogue. Within ExSeSS, we find one serendipitously X-ray detected z > 6 AGN, ATLAS J025.6821-33.4627, with an X-ray luminosity of |$L_\mathrm{X}=8.47^{+3.40}_{-3.13}\times 10^{44}\mathrm{erg.s^{-1}}$| and z  = 6.31 ± 0.03, making it the highest redshift, spectroscopically confirmed, serendipitously X-ray detected quasar known to date. We also calculate an upper limit on the space density at higher luminosities where no additional sources are found, enabling us to place constraints on the shape of the XLF. Our results are consistent with the rapid decline in the space densities of high-luminosity AGN towards high redshift as predicted by extrapolations of existing parametric models of the XLF. We also find that our X-ray based measurements are consistent with estimates of the bolometric quasar luminosity function based on UV measurements at z ≳ 6, although they require a large X-ray to bolometric correction factor at these high luminosities. We present a study of optically selected dual Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with projected separations of 3–97 kpc. Using multiwavelength (MWL) information (optical, X-ray, mid-IR), we characterized the intrinsic nuclear properties of this sample and compared them with those of isolated systems. Among the 124 X-ray-detected AGN candidates, 52 appear in pairs and 72 as single X-ray sources. Through MWL analysis, we confirmed the presence of the AGN in >80 per cent of the detected targets in pairs (42 out of 52). X-ray spectral analysis confirms the trend of increasing AGN luminosity with decreasing separation, suggesting that mergers may have contributed to triggering more luminous AGN. Through X-ray/mid-IR ratio versus X-ray colours, we estimated a fraction of Compton-thin AGN (with 1022 cm−2 < N H < 1024 cm−2) of about 80 per cent, while about 16 per cent are Compton-thick sources (with N H > 1024 cm−2). These fractions of obscured sources are larger than those found in samples of isolated AGN, confirming that pairs of AGN show higher obscuration. This trend is further confirmed by comparing the de-reddened [O  iii ] emission with the observed X-ray luminosity. However, the derived fraction of Compton-thick sources in this sample at the early stages of merging is lower than that reported for late-merging dual-AGN samples. Comparing N H from X-rays with that derived from E (B − V) from narrow-line regions, we found that the absorbing material is likely to be associated with the torus or broad-line regions. We also explored the X-ray detection efficiency of dual-AGN candidates, finding that, when observed properly (at on-axis positions and with long exposures), X-ray data represent a powerful way to confirm and investigate dual-AGN systems. We present the first systematic broad-band X-ray study of super-Eddington accretion onto supermassive black holes with simultaneous NuSTAR and XMM–Newton or Swift /XRT observations of a sample of eight super-Eddington accreting Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) with Eddington ratio 1 < λ Edd < 426. We find that the super-Eddington accreting massive black holes (SEAMBHs) show a steep primary continuum slope as expected for sources accreting in the super-Eddington regime, mostly dominated by relativistic reflection. The iron K α emission lines of the sources of our sample show relativistic broadening. In addition, the equivalent widths of the narrow components of the iron K α lines follow the 'X-ray Baldwin' effect, also known as the 'Iwasawa–Taniguchi' effect. We found a statistically significant correlation between the photon index of the primary power law and the Eddington ratio, consistent with past studies. Moreover, as expected for super-Eddington sources, the median value of the reflection fraction of the sources we analysed is a factor ∼ 2 higher than the median reflection fraction value of the type 1 AGN from the BASS sample. We are able to estimate the coronal temperature for three sources of our sample: Mrk 382 (kT e = 7.75 keV), PG 0026+129 (kT e = 39 keV), and IRAS 04416+1215 (kT e = 2.95 keV). Looking at the position of the SEAMBHs sources of our sample in the compactness–temperature diagram it appears that in super-Eddington AGN, as for lower Eddington ratio AGN, the X-ray corona is controlled by pair production and annihilation. Jets may have contributed to promoting the growth of seed black holes in the early Universe, and thus observations of radio-loud high-redshift quasars are crucial to understanding the growth and evolution of the early supermassive black holes. Here we report the radio properties of an X-ray bright z  = 5.5 quasar, SRGE J170245.3+130104 (J1702+1301). Our high-resolution radio images reveal the radio counterpart at the optical position of J1702+1301, while another radio component is also detected at ∼23.5 arcsec to the south-west. Our analysis suggests that this south-west component is associated with a foreground galaxy at z ≈ 0.677, which is mixed with J1702+1301 in low-frequency low-resolution radio images. After removing the contamination from this foreground source, we recalculated the radio loudness of J1702+1301 to be R >1100, consistent with those of blazars. J1702+1301 exhibits a flat radio spectrum (α = −0.17 ± 0.05, S  ∝ να) between 0.15 and 5 GHz; above 5 GHz, it shows a rising spectrum shape, and the spectral index |$\alpha ^{8.2}_{4.7}$| appears to be correlated with the variation of the flux density: in burst states, |$\alpha ^{8.2}_{4.7}$| becomes larger. J1702+1301 displays distinct radio variability on time-scales from weeks to years in the source's rest frame.
