The circumgalactic medium (CGM) hosts many physical processes with different kinematic signatures that affect galaxy evolution. We address the CGM–galaxy kinematic connection by quantifying the fraction of H  i that is aligned with galaxy rotation with the equivalent width co-rotation fraction, |$f_{\rm EWcorot}$|⁠. Using 70 quasar sightlines having Hubble Space Telescope /Cosmic Origins Spectrograph H  i absorption (⁠|${12\lt \log (N(\rm{{\rm H}\,{\small I}})/{\rm cm}^{-2})\lt 20}$|⁠) within |$5R_{\rm vir}$| of |$z\lt 0.6$| galaxies we find that |$f_{\rm EWcorot}$| increases with increasing H  i column density. |$f_{\rm EWcorot}$| is flat at |$\sim 0.6$| within |$R_{\rm vir}$| and decreases beyond |$R_{\rm vir}$| to |$f_{\rm EWcorot}$| |$\sim 0.35$|⁠. |$f_{\rm EWcorot}$| also has a flat distribution with azimuthal and inclination angles within |$R_{\rm vir}$|⁠ , but decreases by a factor of two outside of |$R_{\rm vir}$| for minor axis gas and by a factor of 2 for edge-on galaxies. Inside |$R_{\rm vir}$|⁠ , co-rotation dominated H i is located within |$\sim 20$| deg of the major and minor axes. We surprisingly find equal amounts of H  i absorption consistent with co-rotation along both major and minor axes within |$R_{\rm vir}$|⁠. However, this co-rotation disappears along the minor axis beyond |$R_{\rm vir}$|⁠ , suggesting that if this gas is from outflows, then it is bound to galaxies. |$f_{\rm EWcorot}$| is constant over two decades of halo mass, with no decrease for log(M |$_{\rm h}/{\rm M}_{\odot })\gt 12$| as expected from simulations. We present deep, sub-arcsecond (⁠|$\sim$| 2000 au) resolution ALMA 0.82-mm observations of the former high-mass prestellar core candidate G11.92–0.61 MM2, recently shown to be an |$\sim$| 500 au-separation protobinary. Our observations show that G11.92–0.61 MM2, located in the G11.92–0.61 protocluster, lies on a filamentary structure traced by 0.82-mm continuum and N |$_2$| H |$^+$| (4-3) emission. The N |$_2$| H |$^+$| (4-3) spectra are multipeaked, indicative of multiple velocity components along the line of sight. To analyse the gas kinematics, we performed pixel-by-pixel Gaussian decomposition of the N |$_2$| H |$^+$| spectra using scousepy and hierarchical clustering of the extracted velocity components using acorns. Seventy velocity- and position-coherent clusters (called 'trees') are identified in the N |$_2$| H |$^+$| -emitting gas, with the eight largest trees accounting for |$\gt $| 60 per cent of the fitted velocity components. The primary tree, with |$\sim$| 20 per cent of the fitted velocity components, displays a roughly north–south velocity gradient along the filamentary structure traced by the 0.82-mm continuum. Analysing an |$\sim$| 0.17 pc-long substructure, we interpret its velocity gradient of |$\sim$| 10.5 km s |$^{-1}$|  pc |$^{-1}$| as tracing filamentary accretion towards MM2 and estimate a mass inflow rate of |$\sim 1.8\times 10^{-4}$| to 1.2 |$\times 10^{-3}$|  M |$_\odot$| yr |$^{-1}$|⁠. Based on the recent detection of a bipolar molecular outflow associated with MM2, accretion on to the protobinary is ongoing, likely fed by the larger scale filamentary accretion flows. If 50 per cent of the filamentary inflow reaches the protostars, each member of the protobinary would attain a mass of 8 M |$_\odot$| within |$\sim 1.6\times 10^5$| yr, comparable to the combined time-scale of the 70- μ m- and mid-infrared-weak phases derived for ATLASGAL-TOP100 massive clumps using chemical clocks. Three-dimensional (3D) bubble structure of the Sgr-B molecular-cloud complex is derived by a kinematical analysis of CO-line archival cube data of the Galactic Centre (GC) observed with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. The line-of-sight depth is estimated by applying the face-on transformation method of radial velocity to the projected distance on the Galactic plane considering the Galactic rotation of the central molecular zone (CMZ). The 3D complex exhibits a conical-horn structure with the Sgr-B2 cloud located in the farthest end on the line of sight at radial velocity |$v_{\rm lsr} \sim 70$|  km s |$^{-1}$|⁠ , and the entire complex composes a lopsided bubble opening toward the Sun at |$v_{\rm lsr}\sim 50$| to 30 km s |$^{-1}$|⁠. The line-of-sight extent of the complex is |$\sim 100$|  pc according to the large velocity extent for several tens of km s |$^{-1}$| from Sgr-B2 to the outskirts. The entire complex exhibits a flattened conical bubble with full sizes |$\sim 40 \ {\rm pc} \times 20 \ {\rm pc} \times 100 \ {\rm pc}$| in the l, b and line-of-sight directions, respectively. Based on the 3D analysis, we propose a formation scenario of the giant molecular bubble structure due to a galactic bow shock, and suggest that the star formation in Sgr-B2 was enhanced by dual-side compression (DSC) of the B2 cloud by the Galactic shock wave from up-stream and expanding H  ii region from the down-stream side of the GC Arm I in Galactic rotation. Red Geysers are galaxies with low-star formation rates and galactic scale ionized outflows likely driven by low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGN). We investigated the impact of AGN winds on the oxygen abundance using integral field spectroscopic data from Mapping Nearby Galaxies for Red Geysers, control galaxies (quiescent galaxies without outflows), and AGN hosts within the inner 1.5 kpc radius. Red Geyser galaxies have higher W |$_{80}$| values compared to those of AGN and controls, with 64 per cent showing W |$_{80}\gt 500$|  km s |$^{-1}$| that is indicative of outflow. Only 40 per cent of controls and 31 per cent of AGNs reach this value. We found a small tendency of the oxygen abundance distribution of controls to be biased towards higher values than those of Red Geysers. However, Red Geysers do not show a correlation between H |$\alpha$| width (parametrized by the W |$_{\rm 80}$|⁠) and oxygen abundance, which indicates that AGN winds are not significantly impacting the chemical abundance of the nuclear region of these galaxies. The oxygen abundance distribution mean value for the tree samples is |$\rm 12+log(O/H)\sim$| 8.7 (⁠|$\mathit{Z}\sim \rm Z_{\odot })$|⁠. On the other hand, AGN hosts show a positive correlation between W |$_{80}$| and O/H which could be due to star formation that outflows from the active nuclei could induce; or to the reservoir of gas that makes the nucleus active, and its is also used in the star formation. The mass distribution in the Local Group (LG), dominated by the Andromeda (M31) and Milky Way (MW) pair, is highly anisotropic. We use the APOSTLE simulations to examine how this anisotropy manifests on the spatial distribution and kinematics of dwarf galaxies out to a distance of |$d_{\rm MW}\sim 3$|  Mpc from the MW. The simulations indicate a preference for dwarfs to be located near the axis defined by the MW-M31 direction, even for dwarfs in the LG periphery (LGP; i.e. at distances |$1.25\ \lt\ d_{\rm MW}/$| Mpc |$\lt\ 3$|⁠). The 'Hubble flow' in the periphery is also affected; at fixed |$d_{\rm MW}$| the mean recession speed, |$\langle V_{\rm rad} \rangle$|⁠ , varies with angular distance to M31, peaking in the anti-M31 direction and reaching a minimum behind M31. The M31-MW mass decelerates the local expansion; the LG 'turnaround radius' (i.e. where |$\langle V_{\rm rad} \rangle =0$|⁠) in APOSTLE is at |$r \sim 1.25$|  Mpc from the LG barycentre and the pure Hubble flow (where |$\langle V_{\rm rad} \rangle \sim H_0*d$|⁠) is reached beyond |$r\sim 3$|  Mpc. The predicted flow is very cold, with a barycentric dispersion of |$\lt 40$|  km s−1. Comparing these predictions with observations yields mixed results. There is little evidence for a preferred alignment of dwarfs along the MW-M31 direction, but some evidence for an angular anisotropy in |$\langle V_{\rm rad} \rangle$|⁠. Although the 'coldness' of the Hubble flow is consistent with the simulations, it is less decelerated: relative to the MW all galaxies beyond |$d_{\rm MW} \sim 1.25$|  Mpc seem to be already on a pure Hubble flow. An overview of the kinematics of (p, pX) knockout reactions is given. Consistent descriptions of the kinematical quantities for normal and inverse kinematics are provided. Starting from the kinematics of p – X elastic scatterings, which are elementary processes of the (p, pX) knockout reactions, the effects of the separation energy of the knocked-out particle SX , its in-nucleus momentum |$\vec{k}_{F}$|⁠ , and a momentum transfer q are investigated. These three quantities are called "knockout feature quantities" in this article. The main conclusions are as follows: SX dependences of the (p, pX) kinematics are mainly through changes in the p – X center-of-momentum energy |$\sqrt{s_{pX}}$| for which no difference exists between normal and inverse kinematics. The effects of longitudinal-to-the-beam component of |$\vec{k}_{F}$| cause a significant difference between normal and inverse kinematics through changes in β pX and |$\sqrt{s_{pX}}$|⁠. On the other hand, the transverse to the beam component of |$\vec{k}_{F}$| changes energy sharing between the scattered proton and the knocked-out particle in both normal and inverse kinematics. Center of mass (COM) mechanics, often used as an energetic proxy during locomotion, has primarily focused on level movement and hardly explores climbing scenarios. This study examines three-dimensional COM movements across five phylogenetically distinct species to test theoretical expectations of climbing costs, explore how interspecific variation (i.e. different limb numbers, adhesion mechanisms, body masses [0.008–84 kg], and limb postures) affects COM mechanics, and determine the impact of out-of-plane COM movements on climbing costs. A parallel experiment with rosy-faced lovebirds explores how inclination angle affects COM mechanical energy and how these empirical data align with theoretical expectations. Results indicate that, irrespective of anatomical differences, total mechanical costs of climbing are primarily driven by potential energy, outweighing contributions from kinetic energy. Despite species exhibiting significant out-of-plane kinematics, these movements have minimal impact on overall locomotor costs. Inclination angle changes have minimal effects, as potential energy accumulation dominates quickly as steepness increases, suggesting climbing occurs even on acutely angled substrates from a COM perspective. The study challenges prior assumptions about factors influencing climbing costs, such as body mass, speed, or posture, indicating a lack of evident anatomical or behavioral adaptations for climbing efficiency across species. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic molecules which comprise the smallest particles of dust in the interstellar medium (ISM). Due to their broad/complex emission profiles, obtaining kinematics is a challenge with traditional methods, especially before the advent of the JWST. In this work, we employ Principal Component Analysis (PCA) tomography to analyse JWST /NIRSpec IFU data of three nearby luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), namely, NGC 3256 N, NGC 3256 S, and NGC 7469. We detect the signature of rotation in the second principal component of the 3.3  |$\mu$| m PAH feature in all three targets. We construct velocity maps from the principal components for the 3.3  |$\mu$| m PAH feature, Br β (2.625  |$\mu$| m) and molecular hydrogen, H2 1–0 S(1) (2.12  |$\mu$| m). We find that in each target, the PAHs qualitatively follow the rotation of the galaxy, consistent with the rotational signature derived from Br β and H2. There are however some differences, with the PAH rotation in NGC 3256 N appearing at a different position angle, which suggest differences in the motion of the dust as compared to the gas. The detection of Keplerian rotation is rare among Class 0 protostellar systems. We have investigated the high-density tracer HCN as a probe of the inner disc in a Class 0 proto-brown dwarf candidate. Our ALMA high angular resolution observations show the peak in the HCN (3–2) line emission arises from a compact component near the proto-brown dwarf with a small bar-like structure and a deconvolved size of ∼50 au. Radiative transfer modelling indicates that this HCN feature is tracing the innermost, dense regions in the proto-brown dwarf where a small Keplerian disc is expected to be present. The limited velocity resolution of the observations, however, makes it difficult to confirm the rotational kinematics of this feature. A brightening in the HCN emission towards the core centre suggests that HCN can survive in the gas phase in the inner, dense regions of the proto-brown dwarf. In contrast, modelling of the HCO+ (3–2) line emission indicates that it originates from the outer pseudo-disc/envelope region and is centrally depleted. HCN line emission can reveal the small-scale structures and can be an efficient observational tool to study the inner disc properties in such faint compact objects where spatially resolving the disc is nearly impossible. Blue compact galaxies, also known as H  ii galaxies, are dwarf, star-forming objects with relatively simple dynamics, which allows for the investigation of star formation mechanisms in a cleaner manner compared to late-type objects. In this study, we have examined various characteristics of the interstellar medium, in connection with the kinematics and dynamics of ionized gas, in Tol 1004-296 and Tol 0957-278. These two objects were observed using the SOAR Integral Field Spectrometer (SIFS) attached to the Southern Observatory for Astrophysical Research (SOAR). Both galaxies were observed with two gratings: one with medium resolution for monochromatic and abundance maps, and another with high resolution for kinematics and profile analysis. Additionally, we conducted an analysis on the velocity and velocity dispersion maps using intensity–velocity dispersion (I-σ) and velocity–velocity dispersion (Vr-σ) diagrams. Neither object exhibits a rotation pattern, and only Tol 1004-296 shows a velocity gradient between the two principal knots. However, the study reveals the significant role played by velocity dispersion in the star formation process. Specifically, we identified a relationship between monochromatic intensity, metallicity, and velocity dispersion, where high emission corresponds to low metallicity and low velocity dispersion. Tol 1004-296, in particular, exhibits a distinctive linear high velocity dispersion pattern between the two main knots, suggesting that both star formation sites are pushing the gas in opposite directions. We present a new method for selecting A-type supergiants (A-SGs hereafter) in the LAMOST DR5 data set using the line indices, and identify 40 spectra of 30 A-SG candidates. Based on the analysis of the absolute magnitude of Gaia DR3, SIMBAD data base, ZTF light variation data, and spectral characteristics of A-SGs, we classified the 30 A-SG candidates into 18 A-SGs and 12 A-SG candidates with different levels of credibility. We also subclassify spectral types of 18 A-SGs and 12 A-SG candidates by using human eyes and find a good consistency between our results and those of MKCLASS for most of them. The spatial distribution of 18 A-SGs and 12 A-SG candidates indicates that they are located in the Galactic latitude smaller than 20○. In addition, the distribution of 13 A-SGs and 7 A-SG candidates with reliable Gaia DR3 kinematic parameters in the Toomre diagram indicates that they are located in the Galactic disc, which also suggests that they are young, massive stars. Our selection has worked out well, in that only one A-SG candidate and one A-SG appear to exhibit discrepant kinematics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As cool clouds are entrained by a hot supersonic galactic wind, they may be shredded by hydrodynamical instabilities and incorporated into the hot flow. One-dimensional steady-state calculations show how cool cloud entrainment affects the bulk thermodynamics and kinematics of the hot gas: mass-loading decelerates the hot flow and changes its entropy. Here, we investigate the stability of mass-loaded hot winds using both perturbation analysis and 3D time-dependent radiative hydrodynamical simulations. We show that mass-loading is stable over a broad range of parameters and that the 1D time-steady analytic solutions exactly reproduce the 3D time-dependent calculations, provided that the flow does not decelerate sufficiently to become subsonic. For higher values of the mass-loading, the flow develops a second sonic point, with the first being at the edge of the wind-driving region. Strong deceleration increases the wind density and the flow becomes radiative, undergoing a thermal instability to form elongated dense cometary filaments. We explore the mass-loading parameters required to trigger this behaviour. For certain approximations, we can derive analytic criteria. In general, a mass-loading rate similar to the initial hot-mass outflow rate is required. In this sense, the destruction of small cool clouds by a hot flow may ultimately spontaneously generate fast cool filaments, as observed in starburst winds. Lastly, we find that the kinematics of filaments is sensitive to the slope of the mass-loading function. Filaments move faster than the surrounding wind if mass-loading is over long distances whereas filaments move slower than their surroundings if mass-loading is abrupt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present spatially resolved kinematics of 27 ALMA-identified dust-obscured star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at z  ∼ 1.3–2.6, as traced by Hα emission using VLT/KMOS near-infrared integral field spectroscopy from the 'KMOS-ALMA Observations of Submillimetre Sources' (KAOSS) Large Programme. We derive Hα rotation curves and velocity dispersion profiles for the DSFGs, and find that among the 27 sources with bright, spatially extended Hα emission, 24 display evidence for disc-like kinematics. We measure a median inclination-corrected velocity at 2.2  R d of v rot = 190 ± 40 km s−1 and intrinsic velocity dispersion of σ0 = 87 ± 6 km s−1 for these disc-like sources. The kinematics yield median circular velocities of v circ = 230 ± 20 km s−1 and dynamical masses within 2 R e (∼ 7 kpc radius) of M dyn = (1.1 ± 0.2) × 1011 M⊙. Compared to less actively star-forming galaxies, KAOSS DSFGs are both faster rotating with higher intrinsic velocity dispersions, but have similar v rot/σ0 ratios, median v /σ0 = 2.5 ± 0.5. We suggest that the kinematics of the DSFGs are primarily rotation supported but with a non-negligible contribution from pressure support, which may be driven by star formation or mergers/interactions. We estimate the normalization of the stellar mass Tully–Fisher relation (sTFR) for the disc-like DSFGs and compare it with local studies, finding no evolution at fixed slope between z  ∼ 2 and z  ∼ 0. Finally, we show that the kinematic properties of the DSFG population are consistent with them evolving into massive early-type galaxies, the dominant z  ∼ 0 population at these masses. Robotic manipulation in surgical applications often demands the surgical instrument to pivot around a fixed point, known as remote center of motion (RCM). The RCM constraint ensures that the pivot point of the surgical tool remains stationary at the incision port, preventing tissue damage and bleeding. Precisely and efficiently controlling tool positioning and orientation under this constraint poses a complex Inverse Kinematics (IK) problem that must be solved in real-time to ensure patient safety and minimize complications. To address this problem, we propose PivotIK, an efficient IK solver that combines efficient evolutionary exploration with multi-objective Jacobian-based optimization. PivotIK can track desired tool poses accurately while satisfying the RCM constraint in real-time. We evaluated PivotIK through simulations and real-world experiments using redundant robotic manipulators with multi-degree-of-freedom surgical instruments. We compare PivotIK with other IK solvers in terms of solve rates, computation times, tracking errors, and RCM errors under various scenarios, including unconstrained and RCM-constrained trajectories. Our results show that PivotIK achieves superior performance, solving the IK problem in less than 1 ms with errors below 0.01 and 0.1 mm for tracking and RCM, respectively. Our real-world experiments confirm the effectiveness of PivotIK in ensuring smooth trajectory tracking and RCM compliance. The mass (M BH) of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) can be measured using spatially resolved kinematics of the region where the SMBH dominates gravitationally. The most reliable measurements are those that resolve the smallest physical scales around the SMBHs. We consider here three metrics to compare the physical scales probed by kinematic tracers dominated by rotation: the radius of the innermost detected kinematic tracer R min normalized by the SMBH's Schwarzschild radius (R Schw ≡ 2 GM BH/ c 2, where G is the gravitational constant and c the speed of light), sphere-of-influence (SOI) radius (⁠|$R_\mathrm{SOI}\equiv GM_\mathrm{BH}/\sigma _\mathrm{e}^2$|⁠ , where σe is the stellar velocity dispersion within the galaxy's effective radius), and equality radius [the radius R eq at which the SMBH mass equals the enclosed stellar mass, M BH = M *(R eq), where M *(R) is the stellar mass enclosed within the radius R ]. All metrics lead to analogous simple relations between R min and the highest circular velocity probed V c. Adopting these metrics to compare the SMBH mass measurements using molecular gas kinematics to those using megamaser kinematics, we demonstrate that the best molecular gas measurements resolve material that is physically closer to the SMBHs in terms of R Schw but is slightly farther in terms of R SOI and R eq. However, molecular gas observations of nearby galaxies using the most extended configurations of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array can resolve the SOI comparably well and thus enable SMBH mass measurements as precise as the best megamaser measurements. This study presents a detailed analysis of the GAL045.804 − 0.356 massive star-forming clump. A high-angular resolution and sensitivity observations were conducted using MeerKAT at 1.28 GHz and ALMA interferometer at 1.3 mm. Two distinct centimetre radio continuum emissions (source A and source B) were identified within the clump. A comprehensive investigation was carried out on source A, the G45.804 − 0.355 star-forming region (SFR) due to its association with Extended Green Object (EGO), 6.7 GHz methanol maser and the spatial coincidence with the peak of the dust continuum emission at 870 µm. The ALMA observations revealed seven dense dust condensations (MM1–MM7) in source A. The brightest (S ν ∼ 87 mJy) and massive main dense core, MM1, was co-located with the 6.7 GHz methanol maser. Explorations into the kinematics revealed gas motions characterized by a velocity gradient across the MM1 core. Furthermore, molecular line emission showed the presence of an extended arm-like structure, with a physical size of 0.25 pc × 0.18 pc (∼ 50 000 au × 30 000 au) at a distance of 7.3 kpc. Amongst these arms, two arms were prominently identified in both the dust continuum and some of the molecular lines. A blue-shifted absorption P-Cygni profile was seen in the H2CO line spectrum. The findings of this study are both intriguing and new, utilizing data from MeerKAT and ALMA to investigate the characteristics of the AGAL45 clump. The evidence of spiral arms, the compact nature of the EGO and < 2 km s−1 velocity gradient are all indicative of G45.804 − 0.355 being oriented face-on. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stellar feedback-driven outflows are important regulators of the gas–star formation cycle. However, resolving outflow physics requires high-resolution observations that can only be achieved in very nearby galaxies, making suitable targets rare. We present the first results from the new VLT/MUSE large programme MAUVE (MUSE and ALMA Unveiling the Virgo Environment), which aims to understand the gas–star formation cycle within the context of the Virgo cluster environment. Outflows are a key part of this cycle, and we focus on the peculiar galaxy NGC 4383, which hosts a |$\sim\!\! 6\,$| kpc bipolar outflow fuelled by one of Virgo's most H  i -rich discs. The spectacular MUSE data reveal the clumpy structure and complex kinematics of the ionized gas in this M82-like outflow at 100 pc resolution. Using the ionized gas geometry and kinematics, we constrain the opening half-angle to θ = 25–35°, while the average outflow velocity is |$\sim\!\! 210\ \text{km} \, \text{s}^{-1}$|⁠. The emission line ratios reveal an ionization structure where photoionization is the dominant excitation process. The outflowing gas shows a marginally elevated gas-phase oxygen abundance compared to the disc but lower than the central starburst, highlighting the contribution of mixing between the ejected and entrained gas. Making some assumptions about the outflow geometry, we estimate an integrated mass outflow rate of |$\sim\!\! 1.8~\mathrm{M}_{\odot } \, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$| and a corresponding mass-loading factor in the range of 1.7–2.3. NGC 4383 is a useful addition to the few nearby examples of well-resolved outflows, and will provide a useful baseline for quantifying the role of outflows within the Virgo cluster. This work presents the results of a kinematic analysis of the Galaxy that uses a new model as applied to the newest available Gaia data. We carry out the Taylor decomposition of the velocity field up to second order for 18 million high luminosity stars (i.e. OBAF-type stars, giants, and subgiants) from the Gaia DR3 data. We determine the components of mean stellar velocities and their first and second partial derivatives (relative to cylindrical coordinates) for more than 28 thousand points in the plane of our Galaxy. We estimate Oort's constants A, B, C , and K and other kinematics parameters and map them as a function of Galactocentric coordinates. The values found confirm the results of our previous works and are in excellent agreement with those obtained by other authors in the solar neighbourhood. In addition, the introduction of second order partial derivatives of the stellar velocity field allows us to determine the values of the vertical gradient of the Galaxy azimuthal, radial, and vertical velocities. Also, we determine the mean of the Galaxy rotation curve for Galactocentric distances from 4 to 18 kpc by averaging Galactic azimuths in the range −30° < θ <  + 30° about the direction Galactic Centre – Sun – Galactic anticentre. Maps of the velocity components and of their partial derivatives with respect to coordinates within 10 kpc of the Sun reveal complex substructures, which provide clear evidence of non-axisymmetric features of the Galaxy. Train traffic is a powerful source of seismic waves, with many applications for passive seismic imaging. Seismic signals were recorded a few metres away from the railway track. These records display harmonious waveforms below 15 Hz for trains driving at speeds of around 100 km hr−1. The sensors record an apparent wavelet emitted by the interaction of the axle on a few of the closest sleepers. From this, we build a simple modelling tool using shifted wavelets to simulate a train signal. The relationship involves the varying train speed, the distances between each axle, and the wavelet emitted by each axle. We propose a nonlinear deconvolution method to invert this relationship. We use a local minimization algorithm with gradients derived by the adjoint state method, and use a frequency continuation technique. A linearized picking-based inversion initializes the nonlinear inversion. On real data, we apply this automatic workflow to 300 train passages, with an excellent match between the best simulation and the data. We identify the trains decelerating as they enter a train station. We also identify the train type based on inverted wheel spacing with centimetric accuracy. The inverted wavelets are consistent with the assumption that trains emit seismic waves by bending the rail above sleepers, although the theory does not explain why the inverted wavelet is not zero phase. This automated kinematic inversion algorithm may allow for contactless railway monitoring, and be used for source characterization for subsurface monitoring below railway tracks. The velocity dispersion of globular clusters (GCs) around ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the Virgo cluster spans a wide range, including cases where GC kinematics suggest haloes as massive as (or even more massive than) that of the Milky Way around these faint dwarfs. We analyse the catalogues of GCs derived in post-processing from the TNG50 cosmological simulation to study the GC system kinematics and abundance of simulated UDGs in galaxy groups and clusters. UDGs in this simulation reside exclusively in dwarf-mass haloes with M 200 ≲ 1011.2 M⊙. When considering only GCs gravitationally bound to simulated UDGs, we find GCs properties that overlap well with several observational measurements for UDGs. In particular, no bias towards overly massive haloes is inferred from the study of bound GCs, confirming that GCs are good tracers of UDG halo mass. However, we find that contamination by intracluster GCs may, in some cases, substantially increase velocity dispersion estimates when performing projected mock observations of our sample. We caution that targets with less than 10 GC tracers are particularly prone to severe uncertainties. Measuring the stellar kinematics of the host galaxy should help confirm the unusually massive haloes suggested by GC kinematics around some UDGs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated the ionized and atomic gas kinematics and excitation state in the central region of ongoing star formation of the nearby low-metallicity dwarf galaxy Sextans B. The analysis is based on the new observations performed in the H α emission line with high resolution (R ∼ 16 000) scanning Fabry–Perot interferometer at the 6-m BTA Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences telescope, and on the long-slit spectral observations at the 9.2-m SALT and 2.5-m Caucasian Mountain Observatory of Sternberg Astronomical Institute of Moscow State University telescopes. Strong non-circular gas motions detected in the studied regions probably resulted from the off-plane gas motions and impact of stellar feedback. We identified six regions of elevated H α velocity dispersion, five of which exhibit asymmetric or two-component H α line profiles. Three of these regions are young (<1.1 Myr) expanding (⁠|$V_\mathrm{exp} \sim 25-50 \, \mbox{km}\, \mbox{s}^{-1}$|⁠) superbubbles. We argue that at least three regions in the galaxy could be supernova remnants. We conclude that supernovae feedback is the dominant source of energy for superbubbles in Sextans B, which is expected for such a low metallicity, although we cannot rule out a strong impact of pre-supernova feedback for one superbubble. We present a new semi-analytical formalism for modelling metal absorption lines that emerge from a clumpy galactic environment, ALPACA. We predict the "down-the-barrel" (DTB) metal absorption line profiles and the equivalent width (EW) of absorption at different impact parameters (b) as a function of the clump properties, including clump kinematics, clump volume filling factor, clump number density profile, and clump ion column densities. With ALPACA , we jointly model the stacked DTB C  ii  λ1334 spectrum of a sample of z ∼ 3 Lyman break galaxies and the EW versus b profile of a sample of z ∼ 2 star-forming galaxy–galaxy pairs. ALPACA successfully reproduced two data sets simultaneously, and the best fit prefers a low clump volume filling factor (∼3 × 10−3). The radial velocities of the clumps are a superposition of a rapidly accelerated outflow with a maximum velocity of |$\sim 400 \, {\mathrm{km}\, \mathrm{s}^{-1}}$| and a velocity dispersion of |$\sigma \sim 120 \, {\mathrm{km}\, \mathrm{s}^{-1}}$|⁠. The joint modelling reveals a physical scenario where the absorption observed at a particular velocity is contributed by the clumps distributed over a fairly broad range of radii. We also find that the commonly adopted Sobolev approximation is at best only applicable within a narrow range of radii where the clumps are undergoing rapid acceleration in a non-volume-filling clumpy medium. Lastly, we find that the clump radial velocity profile may not be fully constrained by the joint modelling and spatially resolved Ly α emission modelling may help break the degeneracy. We construct the Schwarzschild dynamical models for 11 early-type galaxies with the SAURON and Mitchell stellar IFUs out to 2–4 R e, and construct dynamical models with combined stellar and H i kinematics for a subsample of four galaxies with H i velocity fields out to 10 R e obtained from the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, thus robustly obtaining the dark matter content out to large radii for these galaxies. Adopting a generalized-NFW dark matter profile, we measure an NFW-like density cusp in the dark matter inner slopes for all sample galaxies, with a mean value of 1.00 ± 0.04 (rms scatter 0.15). The mean dark matter fraction for the sample is 0.2 within 1 R e, and increases to 0.4 at 2 R e, and 0.6 at 5 R e. The dark matter fractions within 1 R e of these galaxies are systematically lower than the predictions of both the TNG-100 and EAGLE simulations. For the dark matter fractions within 2 R e and 5 R e, 40 and 70 per cent galaxies are 1σ consistent with either the TNG-100 or the EAGLE predictions, while the remaining 60 and 30 per cent galaxies lie below the 1σ region. Combined with 36 galaxies with dark matter fractions measured out to 5 R e in the literature, about 10 per cent of these 47 galaxies lie below the 3σ region of the TNG-100 or EAGLE predictions. The warp is a well-known undulation of the Milky Way disc. Its structure has been widely studied, but only since Gaia DR2 has it been possible to reveal its kinematic signature beyond the solar neighbourhood. In this work, we present an analysis of the warp traced by Classical Cepheids by means of a Fourier decomposition of their height (Z) and, for the first time, of their vertical velocity (Vz). We find a clear but complex signal that in both variables reveals an asymmetrical warp. In Z , we find the warp to be almost symmetric in amplitude at the disc's outskirts, with the two extremes never being diametrically opposed at any radius and the line of nodes presenting a twist in the direction of stellar rotation for R > 11 kpc. For Vz , in addition to the usual m  = 1 mode, an m  = 2 mode is needed to represent the kinematic signal of the warp, reflecting its azimuthal asymmetry. The line of maximum vertical velocity is similarly twisted as the line of nodes and trails behind by ≈25°. We develop a new formalism to derive the pattern speed and change in amplitude with time |$\dot{A}$| of each Fourier mode at each radius, via a joint analysis of the Fourier decomposition in Z and Vz. By applying it to the Cepheids we find, for the m  = 1 mode, a constant pattern speed in the direction of stellar rotation of 9.2 ± 3.1 km s−1 kpc−1, a negligible |$\dot{A}$| up to R ≈ 14 kpc and a slight increase at larger radii, in agreement with previous works. We present results from the first spatially resolved kinematic and dynamical modelling analysis of the unique SDSSJ0946+1006 ('Jackpot') triple-source lens system, where a single massive foreground |$z\, =\, 0.222$| galaxy multiple-images three background sources at different redshifts. Deep integral field unit spectroscopic data were obtained using the MUSE instrument on the VLT, which, compared to previous single-slit observations, provides full azimuthal area coverage, high sensitivity (5 h integration) and high angular resolution (0.5 arcsec full width at half-maximum). To account for the strong continuum contributions from the |$z\, =\, 0.609$| source, a multiple-component stellar template fitting technique is adopted to fit to the spectra of both the lens galaxy and the bright lensed background arc simultaneously. Through this, we robustly measure the first and second moments of the 2D stellar kinematics out to about 10 kpc from the centre of the lens, as well as resolving the inner profile inwards to ∼1 kpc. The 2D kinematic maps show a steep velocity dispersion gradient and a clear rotational component. We constrain the characteristic properties of the stellar and dark matter (DM) mass components with a sufficiently flexible parametrised dynamical model and an imposed lensing mass and find a DM density slope of |$\gamma \, =\, 1.73\substack{+0.17 \\ -0.26}$|⁠ , i.e. significantly steeper than an unmodified NFW profile (⁠|$\gamma \, =\, 1$|⁠) and consistent with a contracted DM halo. Our fitted models have a lensing-equivalent density slope of |$\eta \, =\, 0.96\pm 0.02$|⁠ , and thus we confirm most pure lensing results in finding a near isothermal profile for this galaxy. Filamentary flows towards the centre of molecular clouds have been recognized as a crucial process in the formation and evolution of stellar clusters. In this paper, we present a comprehensive observational study that investigates the gas properties and kinematics of the Giant Molecular Cloud G148.24+00.41 using the observations of CO (1-0) isotopologues. We find that the cloud is massive (105 M⊙) and is one of the most massive clouds of the outer Galaxy. We identified six likely velocity coherent filaments in the cloud having length, width, and mass in the range of 14–38 pc, 2.5–4.2 pc, and (1.3–6.9) × 103 M⊙, respectively. We find that the filaments are converging towards the central area of the cloud, and the longitudinal accretion flows along the filaments are in the range of ∼ 26–264 M⊙ Myr−1. The cloud has fragmented into seven clumps having mass in the range of ∼ 260–2100 M⊙ and average size around ∼ 1.4 pc, out of which the most massive clump is located at the hub of the filamentary structures, near the geometric centre of the cloud. Three filaments are found to be directly connected to the massive clump and transferring matter at a rate of ∼ 675 M⊙ Myr−1. The clump hosts a near-infrared cluster. Our results show that large-scale filamentary accretion flows towards the central region of the collapsing cloud is an important mechanism for supplying the matter necessary to form the central high-mass clump and subsequent stellar cluster. High-mass stars have an enormous influence on the evolution of the interstellar medium in galaxies, so it is important that we understand how they form. We examine the central clumps within a sample of seven infrared-dark clouds (IRDCs) with a range of masses and morphologies. We use 1-pc-scale observations from the Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) and the IRAM 30m telescope to trace dense cores with 2.8-mm continuum, and gas kinematics in C18O, HCO+, HNC, and N2H+ (J  = 1–0). We supplement our continuum sample with six IRDCs observed at 2.9 mm with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), and examine the relationships between core- and clump-scale properties. We have developed a fully automated multiple-velocity component hyperfine line-fitting code called mwydyn which we employ to trace the dense gas kinematics in N2H+ (1–0), revealing highly complex and dynamic clump interiors. We find that parsec-scale clump mass is the most important factor driving the evolution; more massive clumps are able to concentrate more mass into their most massive cores – with a log-normally distributed efficiency of around 9 per cent – in addition to containing the most dynamic gas. Distributions of linewidths within the most massive cores are similar to the ambient gas, suggesting that they are not dynamically decoupled, but are similarly chaotic. A number of studies have previously suggested that clumps are globally collapsing; in such a scenario, the observed kinematics of clump centres would be the direct result of gravity-driven mass inflows that become ever more complex as the clumps evolve, which in turn leads to the chaotic mass growth of their core populations. Multi-epoch very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations measure three-dimensional water maser motions in protostellar outflows, enabling analysis of inclination and velocity. However, these analyses assume that water masers and shock surfaces within outflows are co-propagating. We compare VLBI data on maser-traced bow shocks in the high-mass protostar AFGL 5142-MM1, from seven epochs of archival data from the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA), obtained from 2014 April to 2015 May, and our newly conducted data from the KVN and VERA Array (KaVA), obtained in 2016 March. We find an inconsistency between the expected displacement of the bow shocks and the motions of individual masers. The separation between two opposing bow shocks in AFGL 5142-MM1 was determined to be 337.17 ± 0.07 mas in the KaVA data, which is less than an expected value of 342.1 ± 0.7 mas based on extrapolation of the proper motions of individual maser features measured by VERA. Our measurements imply that the bow shock propagates at a velocity of 24 ± 3 km s−1, while the individual masing gas clumps move at an average velocity of 55 ± 5 km s−1; that is ,the water masers are moving in the outflow direction at double the speed at which the bow shocks are propagating. Our results emphasize that investigations of individual maser features are best approached using short-term high-cadence VLBI monitoring, while long-term monitoring on timescales comparable to the lifetimes of maser features is better suited to tracing the overall evolution of shock surfaces. Observers should be aware that masers and shock surfaces can move relative to each other, and that this can affect the interpretation of protostellar outflows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective Video-based pose estimation is an emerging technology that shows significant promise for improving clinical gait analysis by enabling quantitative movement analysis with little costs of money, time, or effort. The objective of this study is to determine the accuracy of pose estimation-based gait analysis when video recordings are constrained to 3 common clinical or in-home settings (ie, frontal and sagittal views of overground walking and sagittal views of treadmill walking). Methods Simultaneous video and motion capture recordings were collected from 30 persons after stroke during overground and treadmill walking. Spatiotemporal and kinematic gait parameters were calculated from videos using an open-source human pose estimation algorithm and from motion capture data using traditional gait analysis. Repeated-measures analyses of variance were then used to assess the accuracy of the pose estimation-based gait analysis across the different settings, and the authors examined Pearson and intraclass correlations with ground-truth motion capture data. Results Sagittal videos of overground and treadmill walking led to more accurate measurements of spatiotemporal gait parameters versus frontal videos of overground walking. Sagittal videos of overground walking resulted in the strongest correlations between video-based and motion capture measurements of lower extremity joint kinematics. Video-based measurements of hip and knee kinematics showed stronger correlations with motion capture versus ankle kinematics for both overground and treadmill walking. Conclusion Video-based gait analysis using pose estimation provides accurate measurements of step length, step time, and hip and knee kinematics during overground and treadmill walking in persons after stroke. Generally, sagittal videos of overground gait provide the most accurate results. Impact Many clinicians lack access to expensive gait analysis tools that can help identify patient-specific gait deviations and guide therapy decisions. These findings show that video-based methods that require only common household devices provide accurate measurements of a variety of gait parameters in persons after stroke and could make quantitative gait analysis significantly more accessible. We compare ionized gas and stellar kinematics of 16 star-forming galaxies (log (M ⋆/ M ⊙) = 9.7–11.2, SFR =6 − 86 M⊙ yr−1) at z ∼ 1 using near-infrared integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of Hα emission from the KMOS3D (the K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph 3D) survey and optical slit spectroscopy of stellar absorption and gas emission from the LEGA-C (Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census) survey. Hα is dynamically colder than stars, with higher disc rotation velocities (by ∼45 per cent) and lower disc velocity dispersions (by a factor ∼2). This is similar to trends observed in the local Universe. We find higher rotational support for Hα relative to [O  ii ], potentially explaining systematic offsets in kinematic scaling relations found in the literature. Regarding dynamical mass measurements, for six galaxies with cumulative mass profiles from Jeans Anisotropic Multi-Gaussian Expansion (JAM) models the Hα dynamical mass models agree remarkably well out to ∼10 kpc for all but one galaxy (average |$\Delta M_{\rm dyn}(R_{e,\rm F814W})\lt 0.1$| dex). Simpler dynamical mass estimates based on integrated stellar velocity dispersion are less accurate (standard deviation 0.24 dex). Differences in dynamical mass estimates are larger, for example, for galaxies with stronger misalignments of the Hα kinematic major axis and the photometric position angle, highlighting the added value of IFS observations for dynamics studies. The good agreement between the JAM and the dynamical models based on Hα kinematics at z ∼ 1 corroborates the validity of dynamical mass measurements from Hα IFS observations, which can be more easily obtained for higher redshift galaxies. We employ a sample of 135 873 RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) with precise photometric-metallicity and distance estimates from the newly calibrated P –ϕ31– R 21–[Fe/H] and Gaia G band P – R 21–[Fe/H] absolute magnitude–metallicity relations of Li et al. combined with available proper motions from Gaia EDR3, and 6955 systemic radial velocities from Gaia DR3 and other sources, in order to explore the chemistry and kinematics of the halo of the Milky Way (MW). This sample is ideally suited for characterization of the inner- and outer-halo populations of the stellar halo, free from the bias associated with spectroscopically selected probes, and for estimation of their relative contributions as a function of Galactocentric distance. The results of a Gaussian mixture model analysis of these contributions are broadly consistent with other observational studies of the halo, and with expectations from recent MW simulation studies. We apply the hdbscan clustering method to the specific energies and cylindrical actions (E , Jr, Jϕ, J z ), identifying 97 dynamically tagged groups (DTGs) of RRLs, and explore their associations with recognized substructures of the MW. The precise photometric-distance determinations (relative distance errors on the order of 5 per cent or better), and the resulting high-quality determination of dynamical parameters, yield highly statistically significant (low) dispersions of [Fe/H] for the stellar members of the DTGs compared to random draws from the full sample, indicating that they share common star-formation and chemical histories, influenced by their birth environments. The co-evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes (SMBHs) underpins our understanding of galaxy evolution, but different methods to measure SMBH masses have only infrequently been cross-checked. We attempt to identify targets to cross-check two of the most accurate methods, megamaser, and cold molecular gas dynamics. Three promising galaxies are selected from all those with existing megamaser SMBH mass measurements. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) 12CO (2–1) and 230-GHz continuum observations with angular resolutions of ≈0 |${_{.}^{\prime\prime}}$| 5. Every galaxy has an extended rotating molecular gas disc and 230-GHz continuum source(s), but all also have irregularities and/or non-axisymmetric features: NGC 1194 is highly inclined and has disturbed and lopsided central 12CO (2–1) emission; NGC 3393 has a nuclear disc with fairly regular but patchy 12CO (2–1) emission with little gas near the kinematic major axis, faint emission in the very centre, and two brighter structures reminiscent of a nuclear ring and/or spiral; NGC 5765B has a strong bar and very bright 12CO (2–1) emission concentrated along two bisymmetric offset dust lanes and two bisymmetric nuclear spiral arms. 12CO (2–1) and 12CO (3–2) observations with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope are compared with the ALMA observations. Because of the disturbed gas kinematics and the impractically long integration times required for higher angular resolution observations, none of the three galaxies is suitable for a future SMBH mass measurement. None the less, increasing the number of molecular gas observations of megamaser galaxies is valuable, and the ubiquitous disturbances suggest a link between large-scale gas properties and the existence of megamasers. We investigate the effects of halo kinematics on the dynamics of stellar discs by simulating the evolution of isolated disc–halo systems from equilibrium initial conditions. Our main results come from four simulations where the initial disc is identical and the halo is either treated as a rigid potential or is 'live' with isotropic orbits or orbits that preferentially rotate with or counter to the disc. We confirm previous results that bar formation is more vigorous in models with a live halo than a rigid one and is further enhanced when halo orbits preferentially rotate with the disc. We discuss two types of buckling events with different symmetries about the mid-plane, one that occurs just as the bar is forming and the other well after the bar has been established. We also show that warps are most easily excited and maintained when the halo is counter-rotating with the disc, in agreement with theoretical predictions. Our most novel result is the discovery of a rotating halo instability, which causes the disc and halo cusp to spiral outward from the centre-of-mass of the system whether the halo rotates with the disc or counter to it and also occurs in a disc–bulge–halo system that does not form a bar. Hydrogen-deficient stars include the cool R CrB variable (RCBs) and hydrogen-deficient carbon (HdCs) giants through extreme helium stars (EHes) to the very hot helium-rich subdwarfs (He-sdO and O(He) stars) and white dwarfs. With surfaces rich in helium, nitrogen, and carbon, their origins have been identified with the merger of two white dwarfs. Using Gaia to focus on the EHes, we aim to identify progenitor populations and test the evolution models. Gaia DR3 measurements and ground-based radial velocities have been used to compute Galactic orbits using galpy. Each orbit has been classified by population; EHe stars are found in all of the thin disc, thick disc, halo, and bulge, as are RCB, HdC, and He-sdO stars. Spectral energy distributions were constructed for all EHes, to provide angular diameters, and hence radii and luminosities. The EHes fall into two luminosity groups divided at |$L \approx 2500 \, {\rm L_{\odot }}$|⁠. This supports theory for the origin of EHes, and is the strongest confirmation so far in terms of luminosity. The lower luminosity EHes correspond well with the post-merger evolution of a double helium white dwarf binary. Likewise, the higher luminosity EHes match the post-merger evolution of a carbon/oxygen plus helium white dwarf binary. In terms of parent populations, current models predict that double white dwarf mergers should occur in all Galactic populations, but favour mergers arising from recent star formation (i.e. thin disc), whereas the statistics favour an older epoch (i.e. thick disc). We present a new method to simultaneously and self-consistently model the mass distribution of galaxy clusters that combines constraints from strong lensing features, X-ray emission, and galaxy kinematics measurements. We are able to successfully decompose clusters into their collisionless and collisional mass components thanks to the X-ray surface brightness, as well as use the dynamics of cluster members, to obtain more accurate masses exploiting the fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies. Knowledge from all observables is included through a consistent Bayesian approach in the likelihood or in physically motivated priors. We apply this method to the galaxy cluster Abell S1063 and produce a mass model that we publicly release with this paper. The resulting mass distribution presents different ellipticities for the intra-cluster gas and the other large-scale mass components as well as deviation from elliptical symmetry in the main halo. We assess the ability of our method to recover the masses of the different elements of the cluster using a mock cluster based on a simplified version of our Abell S1063 model. Thanks to the wealth of mutliwavelength information provided by the mass model and the detected X-ray emission, we also found evidence for an ongoing merger event with gas sloshing from a smaller infalling structure into the main cluster. In agreement with previous findings, the total mass, gas profile, and gas mass fraction are all consistent with small deviations from the hydrostatic equilibrium. We present the measurement of total and stellar/dark matter decomposed mass density profile around a sample of galaxy groups and clusters with dynamical masses derived from integral-field stellar kinematics from the MaNGA survey in Paper I and weak lensing derived from the DECaLS imaging survey. Combining the two data sets enables accurate measurement of the radial density distribution from several kpc to Mpc scales. Intriguingly, we find that the excess surface density derived from stellar kinematics in the inner region cannot be explained by simply adding an NFW dark matter halo extrapolated from lensing measurement at a larger scale to a stellar mass component derived from the NASA-Sloan Atlas (NSA) catalogue. We find that a good fit to both data sets requires a stellar mass normalization about three times higher than that derived from the NSA catalogue, which would require an unrealistically too-heavy initial mass function for stellar mass estimation. If we keep the stellar mass normalization to that of the NSA catalogue but allow a varying inner dark matter density profile, we obtain an asymptotic slope of γgnfw =  |$1.82_{-0.25}^{+0.15}$| and γgnfw =  |$1.48_{-0.41}^{+0.20}$| for the group bin and the cluster bin, respectively, significantly steeper than the NFW case. We also compare the total mass inner density slopes with those from TNG300 and find that the values from the simulation are lower than the observation by about 2σ level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: This paper aims to assess kinematic parameters related to functional capacity, fatigue, and breathlessness during the 6-min walk test (6MWT) in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Methods and results: A cross-sectional study was conducted in which adults 70 years or older with HFpEF were voluntarily recruited between April 2019 and March 2020. An inertial sensor was placed at the L3–L4 level and another on the sternum to assess kinematic parameters. The 6MWT was divided into two 3-min phases. Leg fatigue and breathlessness, assessed by the Borg scale, the heart rate (HR), and the oxygen saturation (SpO2), were measured at the beginning and the end of the 6MWT. The difference in kinematic parameters between the 6MWT two 3-min phases was also calculated. Bivariate Pearson correlations and subsequent multivariate linear regression analysis were performed. Seventy older adults with HFpEF (mean = 80.74 years old) were included. Kinematic parameters explained 81.00% of the functional capacity, 45.50% of the leg fatigue and 66.10% of the breathlessness variance. Moreover, kinematic parameters could explain 30.90% of the SpO2 variance at the end of the 6MWT. Kinematic parameters also explained 33.10% of the SpO2 difference between the beginning and end of 6MWT. Kinematic parameters explained neither the HR variance at the end of 6MWT nor the HR difference between the beginning and end. Conclusion: Gait kinematics from L3-L4 and sternum explain a part of the variance in subjective outcomes, assessed by the Borg scale, and objective outcomes such as functional capacity and SpO2. The kinematic assessment allows clinicians to quantify fatigue and breathlessness through objective parameters related to the patient's functional capacity. In life, it is common for almost every kind of organism to interact with one another. In the human realm, such interactions are at the basis of joint actions, when two or more agents syntonize their actions to achieve a common goal. Shared intentionality is the theoretical construct referring to the suite of abilities that enable such coordinated and collaborative interactions. While shared intentionality has become an important concept in research on social cognition, there is controversy surrounding its evolutionary origins. An aspect still unexplored but promising to bring new insights into this open debate is the study of aneural organisms. To fill this gap, here we investigate whether climbing plants can act jointly to achieve a common goal, i.e. reaching the light. We examined Pisum Sativum plants growing intertwined when there is a need to climb but a potential support is not present in the environment. Three-dimensional kinematic analysis of their movement revealed a coordinated and complementary behaviour. They tend to coordinate their movement in time and space to achieve a joint climbing. By deliberately extending the context in which a joint action takes place, we pay tribute to the complex nature of this social phenomenon. We present a kinematic study of a thousand of dwarf satellites of MW/M31-like hosts from the IllustrisTNG50 simulation. Internal kinematics were derived for all the snapshots to obtain a historical record of their rotation velocity in the plane of the sky (| VT |) and the amplitude of their velocity gradients along the line of sight (⁠|$A_{\rm grad}^{v_z}$|⁠) measured from the host. For the majority of the satellites, we initially detected rotation in the plane of the sky (65 per cent) or velocity gradients (80 per cent), and this was progressively reduced to 45 per cent and 68 per cent at z  = 0, respectively. We find that the evolution of the rotation in the plane of the sky and the velocity gradients differs according to type of dwarfs, which could be explained in terms of their different masses and orbital histories. We observe that interaction with the host has an impact on the evolution of the internal kinematics of the satellites. The rotation signal of the satellites is progressively reduced during pericentric passages, the first pericentre being especially disruptive for the initial kinematics. We observe temporary increases in |$A_{\rm grad}^{v_z}$| during pericentric passage caused by tidal interaction with the host, |$A_{\rm grad}^{v_z}$| increasing as the satellites approach their pericentre and dropping as they move away. In summary, we conclude that the presence of detectable rotation in dwarf satellites is not uncommon, and that the evolution of their internal kinematics is clearly affected by their interaction with the host. Ly α nebulae ubiquitously found around z > 2 quasars can supply unique constraints on the properties of the circumgalactic medium, such as its density distribution, provided the quasar halo mass is known. We present a new method to constrain quasar halo masses based on the line-of-sight velocity dispersion maps of Ly α nebulae. By using MUSE-like mock observations obtained from cosmological hydrodynamic simulations under the assumption of maximal quasar fluorescence, we show that the velocity dispersion radial profiles of Ly α emitting gas are strongly determined by gravity and that they are thus self-similar with respect to halo mass when rescaled by the virial radius. Through simple analytical arguments and by exploiting the kinematics of He  ii 1640 Å emission for a set of observed nebulae, we show that Ly α radiative transfer effects plausibly do not change the shape of the velocity dispersion profiles but only their normalization without breaking their self-similarity. Taking advantage of these results, we define the variable |$\eta ^{140-200}_{40-100}$| as the ratio of the median velocity dispersion in two specifically selected annuli and derive an analytical relation between |$\eta ^{140-200}_{40-100}$| and the halo mass which can be directly applied to observations. We apply our method to 37 observed quasar Ly α nebulae at 3 < z < 4.7 and find that their associated quasars are typically hosted by ∼1012.16 ± 0.14M⊙ haloes independent of redshift within the explored range. This measurement, which is completely independent of clustering methods, is consistent with the lowest mass estimates based on quasar autocorrelation clustering at z∼3 and with quasar-galaxies cross-correlation results. We present Magellan /M2FS spectroscopy of four recently discovered Milky Way star clusters (Gran 3/Patchick 125, Gran 4, Garro 01, and LP 866) and two newly discovered open clusters (Gaia 9 and Gaia 10) at low Galactic latitudes. We measure line-of-sight velocities and stellar parameters ([Fe/H], log  g, T eff, and [Mg/Fe]) from high-resolution spectroscopy centred on the Mg triplet and identify 20–80 members per star cluster. We determine the kinematics and chemical properties of each cluster and measure the systemic proper motion and orbital properties by utilizing Gaia astrometry. We find Gran 3 to be an old, metal-poor (mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = −1.83) globular cluster located in the Galactic bulge on a retrograde orbit. Gran 4 is an old, metal-poor ([Fe/H] = −1.84) globular cluster with a halo-like orbit that happens to be passing through the Galactic plane. The orbital properties of Gran 4 are consistent with the proposed LMS-1/Wukong and/or Helmi streams merger events. Garro 01 is metal-rich ([Fe/H] = −0.30) and on a near-circular orbit in the outer disc but its classification as an open cluster or globular cluster is ambiguous. Gaia 9 and Gaia 10 are among the most distant known open clusters at |$R_{\mathrm{GC}}\sim 18,~21.2~\mathrm{\, kpc}$| and most metal-poor with [Fe/H] ∼−0.50, −0.34 for Gaia 9 and Gaia 10, respectively. LP 866 is a nearby, metal-rich open cluster ([Fe/H] = +0.10). The discovery and confirmation of multiple star clusters in the Galactic plane shows the power of Gaia astrometry and the star cluster census remains incomplete. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present new observations of the Mystic Mountains cloud complex in the Carina Nebula using the ALMA Atacama Compact Array (ACA) to quantify the impact of strong UV radiation on the structure and kinematics of the gas. Our Band 6 observations target CO, 13CO, and C18O; we also detect DCN J=3–2 and 13CS J=5–4. A dendrogram analysis reveals that the Mystic Mountains are a coherent structure, with continuous emission over −10.5 km s−1 < v < −2 km s−1. We perform multiple analyses to isolate non-thermal motions in the Mystic Mountains including computing the turbulent driving parameter, b , which indicates whether compressive or solenoidal modes dominate. Each analysis yields values similar to other pillars in Carina that have been observed in a similar way but are subject to an order of magnitude less intense ionizing radiation. We find no clear correlation between the velocity or turbulent structure of the gas and the incident radiation, in contrast to other studies targeting different regions of Carina. This may reflect differences in the initial densities of regions that go on to collapse into pillars and those that still look like clouds or walls in the present day. Pre-existing over-densities that enable pillar formation may also explain why star formation in the pillars appears more evolved (from the presence of jets) than in other heavily irradiated but non-pillar-like regions. We present a method to characterize star-formation driven outflows from edge-on galaxies and apply this method to the metal-poor starburst galaxy, Mrk 1486. Our method uses the distribution of emission line flux (from H β and [O  iii ] 5007) to identify the location of the outflow and measure the extent above the disc, the opening angle, and the transverse kinematics. We show that this simple technique recovers a similar distribution of the outflow without requiring complex modelling of line-splitting or multi-Gaussian components, and is therefore applicable to lower spectral resolution data. In Mrk 1486 we observe an asymmetric outflow in both the location of the peak flux and total flux from each lobe. We estimate an opening angle of 17–37° depending on the method and assumptions adopted. Within the minor axis outflows, we estimate a total mass outflow rate of ∼2.5 M⊙ yr−1, which corresponds to a mass loading factor of η = 0.7. We observe a non-negligible amount of flux from ionized gas outflowing along the edge of the disc (perpendicular to the biconical components), with a mass outflow rate ∼0.9 M⊙ yr−1. Our results are intended to demonstrate a method that can be applied to high-throughput low spectral resolution observations, such as narrow-band filters or low spectral resolution integral field spectrographs that may be more able to recover the faint emission from outflows. A significant part of barred disc galaxies exhibits boxy/peanut-shaped structures (B/PS bulges) at high inclinations. Another structure also associated with the bar is a barlens, often observed in galaxies in a position close to face-on. At this viewing angle, special kinematic tests are required to detect a 3D extension of the bars in the vertical direction (B/PS bulges). We use four pure N -body models of galaxies with B/PS bulges, which have different bar morphology from bars with barlenses to the so-called face-on peanut bars. We analyse the kinematics of our models to establish how the structural features of B/PS bulges manifest themselves in the kinematics for galaxies at intermediate inclinations and whether these features are related to the barlenses. We apply the dissection of the bar into different orbital groups to determine which of them are responsible for the features of the LOSVD (line-of-sight velocity distribution), i.e. for the deep minima of the h 4 parameter along the major axis of the bar. As a result, we claim that for our models at the face-on position, the kinematic signatures of a 'peanut' indeed track the vertical density distribution features. We conclude that orbits responsible for such kinematic signatures differ from model to model. We pay special attention to the barlens model. We show that orbits assembled into barlens are not responsible for the kinematic signatures of B/PS bulges. Objectives: The objective of the study is to evaluate the relationship between clinical results following posterior-stabilized total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and intraoperative kinematic pattern determined from navigation. Methods: Participants were patients with knee osteoarthritis and varus deformity who underwent primary posterior-stabilized TKA. Preoperative and post-implantation kinematic data were recorded, and all kinematic patterns were divided into two types: medial pivot (MP) or non-MP. Knees with MP and non-MP patterns after implantation were compared in terms of postoperative flexion angle, pain, patient satisfaction, expectations, and activity using the new Knee Society Score 2011 at 1 year postoperatively. Results: This study involved 55 patients (12 men, 43 women) with a mean age of 73.1 years and mean body mass index of 26.5 kg/m². Preoperative kinematic measurements showed MP in 23 knees and non-MP in 32 knees. After implantation, navigation showed MP in 25 knees and non-MP in 30 knees. No significant differences were found between kinematic patterns preoperatively and after implantation. Postoperative flexion angle, pain, patient satisfaction, expectations, and activity using Knee Society Score 2011 showed no differences between MP and non-MP knees. Objective The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of completing a randomized clinical trial (RCT) and examine the preliminary effects of 2 interventions for hip-related groin pain (HRGP). Methods In this pilot RCT, patients with HRGP, who were 18 to 40 years old, were randomized (1:1 ratio) to a joint mobilization (JtMob) group or a movement pattern training (MoveTrain) group. Both treatments included 10 supervised sessions and a home exercise program. The goal of JtMob was to reduce pain and improve mobility through peripherally and centrally mediated pain mechanisms. The key element was physical therapist-provided JtMob. The goal of MoveTrain was to reduce hip joint stresses by optimizing the biomechanics of patient-specific tasks. The key element was task-specific instruction to correct abnormal movement patterns displayed during tasks. Primary outcomes were related to future trial feasibility. The primary effectiveness outcome was the Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score. Examiners were blinded to group; patients and treatment providers were not. Data collected at baseline and immediately after treatment were analyzed with analysis of covariance using a generalized linear model in which change was the dependent variable and baseline was the covariate. The study was modified due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Results The COVID-19 pandemic affected participation; 127 patients were screened, 33 were randomized (18 to the JtMob group and 15 to the MoveTrain group), and 29 (88%) provided posttreatment data. Treatment session adherence was 85%, and home exercise program component adherence ranged from 71 to 86%. Both groups demonstrated significant mean within-group improvements of ≥5 points on Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score scales. There were no between-group differences in effectiveness outcomes. Conclusions A large RCT to assess the effects of JtMob and MoveTrain for patients with HRGP may be feasible. Preliminary findings suggested that JtMob or MoveTrain may result in improvements in patient-reported pain and activity limitations. Impact The COVID-19 pandemic interfered with participation, but a randomized controlled trial may be feasible. Modification may be needed if the trial is completed during future pandemics. We present the first statistical study of spatially integrated non-Gaussian stellar kinematics spanning 7 Gyr in cosmic time. We use deep, rest-frame optical spectroscopy of massive galaxies (stellar mass |$M_\star \gt 10^{10.5} \, \mathrm{M_\odot }$|⁠) at redshifts z = 0.05, 0.3, and 0.8 from the SAMI, MAGPI, and LEGA-C surveys, to measure the excess kurtosis h 4 of the stellar velocity distribution, the latter parametrized as a Gauss–Hermite series. We find that at all redshifts where we have large enough samples, h 4 anticorrelates with the ratio between rotation and dispersion, highlighting the physical connection between these two kinematic observables. In addition, and independently from the anticorrelation with rotation-to-dispersion ratio, we also find a correlation between h 4 and M ⋆, potentially connected to the assembly history of galaxies. In contrast, after controlling for mass, we find no evidence of independent correlation between h 4 and aperture velocity dispersion or galaxy size. These results hold for both star-forming and quiescent galaxies. For quiescent galaxies, h 4 also correlates with projected shape, even after controlling for the rotation-to-dispersion ratio. At any given redshift, star-forming galaxies have lower h 4 compared to quiescent galaxies, highlighting the link between kinematic structure and star-forming activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Central Molecular Zone (CMZ; the central ∼500 pc of the Galaxy) is a kinematically unusual environment relative to the Galactic disc, with high-velocity dispersions and a steep size–linewidth relation of the molecular clouds. In addition, the CMZ region has a significantly lower star formation rate (SFR) than expected by its large amount of dense gas. An important factor in explaining the low SFR is the turbulent state of the star-forming gas, which seems to be dominated by rotational modes. However, the turbulence driving mechanism remains unclear. In this work, we investigate how the Galactic gravitational potential affects the turbulence in CMZ clouds. We focus on the CMZ cloud G0.253+0.016 ('the Brick'), which is very quiescent and unlikely to be kinematically dominated by stellar feedback. We demonstrate that several kinematic properties of the Brick arise naturally in a cloud-scale hydrodynamics simulation, that takes into account the Galactic gravitational potential. These properties include the line-of-sight velocity distribution, the steepened size–linewidth relation, and the predominantly solenoidal nature of the turbulence. Within the simulation, these properties result from the Galactic shear in combination with the cloud's gravitational collapse. This is a strong indication that the Galactic gravitational potential plays a crucial role in shaping the CMZ gas kinematics, and is a major contributor to suppressing the SFR, by inducing predominantly solenoidal turbulent modes. The Gaia eDR3 catalogue has recently been used to study statistically the internal kinematics of wide binary populations using relative velocities of the two component stars, Δ V , total binary masses, mB , and separations, s. For s ≳ 0.01 pc, these binaries probe the low-acceleration a ≲ 2 a 0 regime where gravitational anomalies usually attributed to dark matter are observed in the flat rotation curves of spiral galaxies, where a 0 ≈ 1.2 × 10−10 m s−2 is the acceleration scale of MOND. Such experiments test the degree of generality of these anomalies, by exploring the same acceleration regime using independent astronomical systems of vastly smaller mass and size. A signal above Newtonian expectations has been observed when a ≲ 2 a 0, alternatively interpreted as evidence of a modification of gravity, or as due to kinematic contaminants; undetected stellar components, unbound encounters, or spurious projection effects. Here I take advantage of the enhanced DR3 Gaia catalogue to perform a more rigorous study of the internal kinematics of wide binaries than what has previously been possible. Internally determined Gaia stellar masses and estimates of binary probabilities for each star using spectroscopic information, together with a larger sample of radial velocities, allow for a significant improvement in the analysis and careful exclusion of possible kinematic contaminants. Resulting Δ V scalings accurately tracing Newtonian expectations for the high acceleration regime, but markedly inconsistent with these expectations in the low acceleration one, are obtained.
