The mission of the John A. Hartford Foundation is to improve the health of older Americans. This mission has been realized throughout the evolution of the National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence—an international collaboration between Schools of Nursing and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing—whose goal is to support research, education, and practice to provide better nursing care for our aging society. The National Hartford Center is the focus of this supplement and an example of the Foundation's grant-making to prepare the nursing workforce to be competent to care for our aging society. This article traces the innovative origin and inception of the National Hartford Center, first as the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity (BAGNC) Initiative in 2000 under the leadership of two groundbreaking scholars in nursing and aging sciences: Claire M. Fagin, PhD, RN, and Patricia G. Archbold, DNSc. We continue through to today's leadership and culminate by describing the Center's influence on the gerontological nursing workforce and clinical practice; the paper also includes a brief introduction to the articles, highlighting advances in gerontological nursing science. With funding from the John A. Hartford Foundation, The Atlantic Philanthropies, The Mayday Fund, and a number of creative public and nonprofit partnerships, the National Hartford Center celebrates two decades and its greatest asset—the nearly 300 gerontological nursing leaders, including Archbold nursing pre-docs, Fagin nursing post-docs, and expert faculty, along with its Hartford Centers of Gerontological Nursing Excellence across the country. We trace the transition of BAGNC to the membershipbased National Hartford Center and its move to The Gerontological Society of America to become a self-sustaining, autonomous unit. Current needs, challenges, lessons learned, and strategies of the National Hartford Center are examined within the context of sustainability, which has become paramount as Hartford Foundation funding ends in 2016. Despite the auspicious beginnings of the National Hartford Center, system change has been slow. There remains a strong need to continue to grow the field of gerontological nursing and aging sciences. We are working diligently to drive health system reform, and develop and support gerontological nursing leaders and members of the National Hartford Center as exemplars for innovation in care of older adults. The contributing authors of this supplement are from member schools of the National Hartford Center or are current or past program Scholars or Fellows. Herein these authors showcase innovation for older adults through their research that addresses an array of diseases and conditions affecting human systems, embedded in a variety of environments, including in-home care, subsidized housing communities, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, memory care units, and rural community environs. This section presents an update on the World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR) as of September 2002. The most important prize of WAPOR, the Helen Dinerman Award, was awarded to Roger Tourangeau at this year's annual conference in Saint Petersburg, Florida. Tourangeau is currently the head of the Joint Program in Survey Methodology at the University of Maryland/University of Michigan. The Naomi C. Turner Award for the best student paper was given to Seung-Ahn Nah and Hernando Rojas of the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the paper: New Paths to Political Participation: A Comparative Analysis of Effects of Interpersonal Communication Networks and Media Use of Offline and Online Political Participation. Dietram A. Scheufele and William Eveland, was given the Robert Worcester Award for the best article in the International Journal of Public Opinion Research, for their article Perceptions of Public Opinion and Public Opinion Expression. Past-president Miguel Basanez, acting as chair of the electoral commission, announces the results of recent WAPOR elections. Professor Allan McCutcheon of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln was elected secretary-treasurer. The next WAPOR Annual Conference will be held in Prague, Czech Republic, during the month of September 2003.

Issue: Health of working population is a question of present interest because of a number of reasons: aging workforce, globalization of the labour market, new and increasing risks at working environment etc. Workplace Health Promotion (WHP) become increasingly relevant field of action for public health improvement all over the world. According to the Bulgarian legislation annual trainings on health and safety at work are obligatory for employers and employees. Description: By this paper 7-year experience in training of employers and employees in WHP was shared. Generally, 9 employers/ organizations and 120 employees in three focus groups were included in the training. Questions of the project are: a) how to enhance employers’ capability to plan and put into practice health promotion programs; b) how to increase employees’ interest for active participation in these programs. Training have been conducted both at workplace and at special meetings outside of work environment, organized by Occupational Health Service in collaboration with health promotion experts of Medical University - Pleven. Results: At the beginning (2014), about 2/3 of participants distrust of the proposed approaches. To adapt the training to needs of the audience, a study on the barriers and difficulties in carrying out health promotion activities at workplace was made. Participants were also asked about aspects of WHP that they interested in. During the following meetings (every year from 2014 until now), interest to the WHP and approaches of its implementation have been increasing. Participants improved their activity in discussions, interactive approaches for teaching and training get preferable. Lessons: Lack of knowledge about health promotion concept and its principles predispose to distrust of its potential for public health improvement. Positive attitude to the concept could be established by increasing knowledge and skills in this area and by providing examples of good practices and results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay describes the domain of research in communication law and policy. It is based on a content analysis of research published in the journal Communication Law and Policy (1996-2004), papers presented to the Communication Law and Policy Division at annual conferences of the International Communication Association (1997-2004), as well as consideration of other resources. The most frequent areas for research were media regulation, Internet policy, and freedom of expression issues. After reviewing recent literature on the first two topics, we identified and showcased two emergent categories deserving future attention: communication and the law (particularly fair trial-free press issues) and implications of the burgeoning consolidation of media ownership. The 10th annual meeting of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) was held February 19-21, 2004, in Scottsdale, Arizona. With nearly 850 registered attendees, this year's meeting was the largest to date. The 3-day scientific program included William Corrigall as the keynote speaker, three theme lecturers, one award address, 10 symposia, nine oral paper sessions, and four poster sessions that contained over 100 presentations per session. The meeting content emphasized three major areas of SRNT's scientific focus: Preclinical, clinical, and epidemiology/public health research in the nicotine and tobacco field. The meeting provided many opportunities to interact with and learn from colleagues engaged in broad topics within nicotine and tobacco research. Additional events included two preconference meetings, an opening reception, several evening workshops, scientific and travel awards, and a members' meeting. The scientific excellence and innovation presented at this year's meeting represented SRNT's growth and continued contributions to advancing our understanding of nicotine addiction and tobacco use. This article provides information on the 2002 annual membership meeting called to order by outgoing American Association for Public Opinion Research president Don Dillman at Saint Pete Beach, Florida in May. Secretary-treasurer Rob Santos reported that the financial status is good. The association has a surplus of $40,000. In the membership committee report, Dawn Nelson reported that the association have 1,378 members. A variety of outreach efforts were made, including sending e-mails and letters and making phone calls to lapsed members. Scott Keeter reported that the Standards Committee was enlarged to include members from each chapter and Council of Professional Associations on Federal Statistics and Consortium of Social Science Associations representatives. Diane O'Rourke, chair of the Endowment Committee, asked the members present to review the conference program booklet. They show the goals of the endowment, the status of the funds and the names of the members and organizations who have contributed since the inception of the fund in October 2000. Dick Kulta, reported that despite concerns about attendance after September 11, 2001, numbers were fine. He received 332 submissions resulting in 229 papers, 59 sessions, 10 roundtable discussions and 3 poster sessions.

The fifty-sixth annual conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) was held at the Hilton Montreal Bonaventure in Montreal, Quebec on May 17 to 20, 2001. The conference theme was Making Connections. Some eight hundred public opinion researchers accepted the invitation to meet colleagues and friends and to participate in the interdisciplinary program. The special character of the annual conference clearly distinguishes it from other professional meetings. Despite steady growth in attendance over recent years, it is a relatively small conference. Its limited duration, its submission review process and its carefully variegated slate of paper session topics constrain the number of opportunities for being on the program. With the traditional meals and social events, the AAPOR conference presents a higher quality, more intimate and more interdisciplinary experience than can be found at many academic, governmental, or commercial meetings. The structure of the meeting limits, among other things, opportunities to attract new AAPOR members, the willingness of exhibitors and publishers to display their wares, the range of topics covered in the program and the conference revenue that AAPOR could employ for worthwhile purposes.

This paper described the formal collaboration between the American Heart Association''s Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and the European Society of Cardiology''s Working Group on Cardiovascular Nursing. This collaboration comprises following dimensions: (1) further expansion on collaboration on annual conferences; (2) development of mentoring initiatives; (3) initiation of research collaboration; (4) development of joint guidelines; and (5) appointment of liaison persons of AHA to ESC and vice versa. This article presents the proceedings for the 1992 conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) held at Don CeSAR Resort in Saint Petersburg Beach, Florida on May 15-19. The meeting was held jointly with the annual meeting of the World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR). Official registration at the conference numbered 608, including member and nonmember registration. The 4-day conference consisted of 2 plenary sessions, 2 didactic seminars, 6 WAPOR sessions, 45 regular paper sessions, and 5 scheduled meetings. The tally of all names listed in the program, including session chairpersons, discussants, roundtable panelists, paper givers and co-authors, committee members AAPOR secretariat, and student helpers, indicate that approximately 410 different people contributed to the content and conduct of the program. The Saturday evening plenary focused on American Assessments of Public Opinion in the Emerging Democracies of Eastern Europe and the CIS, which was organized by Andy Kohut. The two didactic sessions ran simultaneously on that same day. Meanwhile, the recipients of AAPOR awards include Jim Davis, Jeffrey Mondak, Anne Welch and Jian-Hua Zhu.

This article reports on the proceedings of the forty-fifth annual conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) and the World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR), held in May 1989, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The four-day Conference consisted of 27 AAPOR paper panels, 5 WAPOR paper panels, 15 roundtables, two plenaries, and one didactic session. Together, these sessions included over 175 different presentations. The tally of all names listed in the program-including session chairpersons, discussants, roundtable panelists, paper givers and coauthors-indicates that 280 different persons contributed to the intellectual content of the conference program in some direct fashion. The two, evening plenary sessions focused on "Perestroika, Glasnost, and Public Opinion in the Soviet Union" and "Newspapers and Television as Election Pollsters: Do They Do Anything Right?" The didactic session was on "Designing Good Graphs." The AAPOR Award for exceptionally distinguished achievement was presented to Herbert E. Krugman.

The article discusses the book "Cultural Indicators: An International Symposium" edited by Gabriele Melischek, Karl Erik Rosengren and James Stoppers. This volume contains most of the papers presented to a Symposium on Cultural Indicators for the Comparative Study of Culture, convened in February 1982 under the auspices of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. All the manuscripts were reviewed by the authors to include the results of the discussions, which took place during the symposium. Cultural Indicators are standardized measuring instruments tapping specific aspects of the cultural environment. Development of these indicators offers a necessary supplement to the already established economic and social indicators. This volume presents the specific methodological approaches, which have developed because of the various research traditions prevailing in different parts af the world, and provides an exposition of the major problems in the field today.
