Seismic waves sensitive to the outermost part of the Earth's liquid core seem to be affected by a stably stratified layer at the core-mantle boundary. Such a layer could have an observable signature in both long-term and short-term variations of the magnetic field of the Earth, which are used to probe the flow at the top of the core. Indeed, with the recent SWARM mission, it seems reasonable to be able to identify waves propagating in the core with period of several months, which may play an important role in the large-scale dynamics. In this paper, we characterize the influence of a stratified layer at the top of the core on deep quasi-geostrophic (Rossby) waves. We compute numerically the quasi-geostrophic eigenmodes of a rapidly rotating spherical shell, with a stably stratified layer near the outer boundary. Two simple models of stratification are taken into account, which are scaled with commonly adopted values of the Brunt-Väisälä frequency in the Earth's core. In the absence of magnetic field, we find that both azimuthal wavelength and frequency of the eigenmodes control their penetration into the stratified layer: the higher the phase speed, the higher the permeability of the stratified layer to the wave motion. We also show that the theory developed by Takehiro & Lister for thermal convection extends to thewhole family of Rossbywaves in the core.Adding a magnetic field, the penetrative behaviour of the quasi-geostrophic modes (the so-called fast branch) is insensitive to the imposed magnetic field and only weakly sensitive to the precise shape of the stratification. Based on these results, the large-scale and high-frequency modes (1-2 month periods) may be detectable in the geomagnetic data measured at the Earth's surface, especially in the equatorial area where the modes can be trapped. Core flows inverted from time-dependent geomagnetic field models image the geodynamo at the top of its generation region, the Earth’s outer core. Physical assumptions incorporated in these inversions affect the resulting flows. Based on rapid rotation dominance, two assumptions similar in form yet different in essence have been proposed: tangential geostrophy (TG, LeMouël 1984) and columnar flow (CF, Amit & Olson 2004). We recall that CF is theoretically consistent with the quasi-geostrophy (QG) theory for an incompressible fluid with spherical solid boundaries whereas TG is not. As such, we highlight the importance of applying the CF assumption when inverting geomagnetic data for interior core (columnar) flows that can be used in kinematic dynamo and thermal convection models in the Boussinesq approximation. Next we evaluate the non-uniqueness associated with CF flows. The areas of ambiguous patches at the core surface where invisible TG or CF flows reside are roughly comparable. The spatial distribution of ambiguous patches for both TG and CF is quite asymmetric about the equator, so assuming equatorial symmetry is expected to reduce the non-uniqueness significantly. In fact, for assumed equatorial symmetry, the only possible non-unique flows will be those along hypothetical ζ-contours in the opposite hemispheres that their equatorial plane projections are parallel. TG flows exhibit a strong Atlantic/Pacific hemispheric dichotomy and a well-defined eccentric gyre whereas in CF flows the dichotomy between these two hemispheres is weaker and the gyre is less clear suggesting that the eccentric gyre might not conserve mass. Both TG and CF upwelling/downwelling patterns are strongly localized in the equatorial region. In addition, in both cases upwelling/downwelling is correlated with equatorward/poleward flow respectively, as expected for QG convection. CF upwelling is more intense than TG upwelling but the magnitude ratio is smaller than the factor 2 distinguishing the analytical expressions of the two assumptions. This smaller magnitude ratio is due to the fact that presently observed geomagnetic secular variation features are mostly explained by magnetic field advection by toroidal core flow in the frozen-flux approximation. A contourite drift from offshore Brazil is mapped in detail and investigated using state-of-the-art 3-D seismic data. The aim was to review the relevance of erosional features in contourite drifts accumulated on continental slopes. Topographically confined by growing salt diapirs, the mapped contourite ridge is limited by two erosional features, a contourite moat and a turbidite channel, showing multiple slide scars on it flanks. Associated with the latter features are thick accumulations of high-amplitude strata, probably comprising sandy/silty sediment of Miocene to Holocene age. The erosional unconformities are mostly observed in a region averaging 3.75 km away from the axes of a channel and a moat, whose deposits interfinger with continuous strata in central parts of the contourite drift. The multiple unconformities observed are mostly related to slide scars and local erosion on the flanks of the drift. This work demonstrates that the existence of widespread unconformities within contourite drifts on continental slopes: (1) may not be as prominent as often documented, (2) are often diachronic and interfinger with correlative hiatuses or aggraded strata in axial regions of contourite drifts. Although less widespread than regional, or ocean-scale unconformities, these diachronous features result in significant hiatuses within contourite drifts and are, therefore, potentially mappable as relevant (regional-scale) unconformities on 2-D/3-D seismic data. Thus, without a full 3-D morphometric analysis of contourite drifts, significant errors may occur when estimating major changes in the dynamics of principal geostrophic currents based on single-site core data, or on direct correlations between stratigraphic surfaces of distinct contourite bodies. Cylinders aligned with the planetary rotation axis have a special significance in the dynamics of planetary dynamo regions. The azimuthal Lorentz forces on these geostrophic cylinders is expected to cancel to a large degree, establishing the so-called Taylor state. Deviations from this state take the form of torsional oscillations (TOs) that are supposed to represent important fast flow variations. These oscillations have reportedly been identified in the secular variation signal from the top of Earth's core. We have performed several dynamo simulations at different parameters to check whether Taylor state and TOs can also be identified in a numerical model. Taylor states are approached when viscous effects are small at Ekman numbers of or below and Reynolds stresses are kept low by choosing moderate Rayleigh numbers. One-dimensional magnetic Alfvén waves that travel towards the boundaries then become prominent in the motion of the geostrophic cylinders. These waves obey the TO theory but are also damped and modified by other effects. For example, fast variations of likely convective origin remain important in all our simulations. Reynolds stresses may play a more sizable role for the dynamics in Earth's dynamo region than commonly assumed. They may also contribute to the motions of geostrophic cylinders and severely reduce the significance of TOs for the fast core dynamics. The amplitude of TOs amounts to not more than a few percent of the total flow amplitude in the simulations, which renders these motions insignificant for the long-term dynamo process. We present core flows constructed from high resolution secular variation (SV) models for the epochs 2001, 2002.5 and 2004, assuming that these flows are quasi-geostrophic in the core interior and that they do not cross the axial cylindrical surface tangent to the inner core. A large jet encircling the inner core and carrying a significant part of the core angular momentum and axial vortices of ∼700 km diameter mainly clustering around the cylinder tangent to the solid inner core, are inferred from geomagnetic SV. New regularizations are suggested from dynamic considerations. It is found that medium and small-scale velocity fields contribute significantly to the large-scale SV. Accordingly, final models of core flows are calculated after an iterative process, whereby the magnetic field variation produced by small-scale stochastic magnetic fields and medium to small-scale computed velocity fields are incorporated into the inversion itself as modelling errors.
