This paper invokes Edward Said's notion of counterpoint to present a transnational sociological account of the Spanish Civil War, 1936–1939. This contrapuntal reading raises questions of sovereignty, violence, and identity, which—filtered through a political sociological lens—offer novel perspectives on the power of empire and colonialism in relation to these key IR categories. Specifically, I argue that the Spanish colonial frontier in Morocco served as a laboratory for distinctive expressions of transnational state-building, violence, and identity-formation, which were reproduced in the metropolitan heartlands of the Iberian Peninsula during the interwar years. The complex interaction between core and periphery in this period had momentous implications for both Spanish and Moroccan history, many of which continue to play out in contemporary politics across the Gibraltar Strait. This paper explores representations of the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca in two North African literary texts, Malek Bennabi's Lebbeik (1947) and Abdelkébir Khatibi's Pèlerinage d'un artiste amoureux (2003). It considers the divergent ways in which pilgrimage is used to explore the place of both literature and religion, as well as their interrelation, when it comes to working out ethics and values on individual and collective levels in Bennabi's late-colonial Algeria, and Khatibi's postcolonial Morocco. Drawing on Alain Badiou's notion of the event as an occurrence that is retrospectively determined to have disrupted the status quo, and contrasting this with Derek Attridge's idea of literature as a disruptive event with indeterminate outcomes, I consider the different ways in which both the pilgrimage and the narratives representing it can be seen as events, implicitly imparting reflections and even teachings on life and how to approach it in both texts. Strong geographical isolation within the distribution of a species may result in differentiated lineages exhibiting conspicuous phenotypic differences. In the present paper, we investigate whether plastid and phenotypic variation is geographically structured within the Olea europaea complex in Macaronesia, which comprises three subspecies separated by oceanic barriers: maroccana (south-west Morocco), guanchica (Canary Islands) and cerasiformis (Madeira archipelago). Plastid variation showed a significant pattern of geographical structure (NST > GST = 0.56), because of the lack of shared haplotypes among subspecies and the presence of a single and private haplotype in the eastern Canary Islands. Such a clear molecular structure, however, was not reflected in a congruent pattern of phenotypic differentiation among taxa in leaf morpho-functional traits. Despite the substantial genetic differentiation observed between the subspecies from Madeira and the Canary Islands, they displayed both higher leaf size (leaf area) and specific leaf area (leaf surface area-to-mass ratio) than their continental counterparts, probably as a result of oceanic conditions in subtropical environments. Modernity cannot be just considered as a unidirectional process imposed from ‘the West’. Rather, it is the outcome of an interaction with ‘the West’ in which different parts of the world like the Maghreb built their own versions of social change. During the colonial period theatre became one of the genres and spaces in which these political and cultural interactions can be clearly observed. In the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco, the young Moroccan nationalist movement promoted theatre associations and organized many plays from the end of the 1930s which permitted the spread of Islamic reformist ideas and critiques of colonialism. In this paper I analyse, from colonial sources and the memories of some of the protagonists, the political and cultural role attributed to theatre in cities like Tetuan and Tangier. The pieces played by nationalist associations were monitored by the Spanish colonial administration so that the performances became political events in themselves. At the same time, the plays were portraying the social changes experienced by Moroccan society and religion, particularly in relation to transformations of the family and the roles attributed to women. The paper analyses an anonymous story (appended to the paper, in English translation) from several literary and linguistic aspects. The text mocks at Hitler and his deputy Goebbels by a story of the joke genre, with a poignant 'punch line'. The story also shows the hostile attitude of Germans to Jews. In addition, it contains implied elements of sexual tension related to the actions and behaviour of Hitler and Goebbels. From the linguistic analysis of the text it is clear that it is a Moroccan Judaeo-Arabic text, written in square Hebrew (print) letters. The manuscript includes three illustrations. We discuss the background of Moroccan Jews and their literature in that period. The text raises the assumption that it was at least aided by someone who knew the language well and might have been influenced by English. This paper presents a detailed description of the skull and part of the mandible of the crocodyliform reptile Hamadasuchus rebouli from the Kem Kem beds (Upper Cretaceous: Albian–Cenomanian) of south-eastern Morocco. This taxon of deep-snouted ziphodont crocodyliform can be diagnosed by a number of autapomorphies. Phylogenetic analysis of a diverse array of crocodylomorph taxa found strong support for a clade comprising H. rebouli, Peirosauridae, and Sebecus. The name Sebecia nom. nov. is proposed for this grouping, which is diagnosed by numerous characters, including the participation of the quadratojugal in the mandibular condyle. Against the backdrop of the fast-progressing legal reconfigurations happening in European countries and the Muslim world, this article brings to light two internationally noteworthy yet overlooked scenarios. The first regards the plasticity of the Italian provisions fostering the privatization of family matters via extra-judicial matrimonial dissolution formulae, which potentially accommodate Islamically inspired normativities either by granting legal validity to ex-spouses' sharīʿah -compliant agreements, or by incorporating potential concessions for the Islamic legal waiting period. The second scenario concerns access to justice for Muslim Moroccan wives, who may strategically seek divorce before Italian tribunals through the implementation of Moroccan family law to benefit from more advantageous interpretations and judicial discretion. In-depth examinations of unpublished legal proceedings reveal an evolving legal vocabulary while documenting strengthened confidence in applying the Mudawwanah on European soil. While this can impede the validation of European (extra-)judicial divorces in Muslim-majority countries and lead to divergent implementations of the same norms in Italy and Morocco, the dynamics nonetheless foster forum shopping and women's empowerment. Paying careful attention to the "gendered readings" of legal provisions introduced by disputing partners before the judiciary, the narrative depicting victimized Muslim women in migratory contexts is therefore challenged. At the close of the Cold War, the Moroccan feminist Fatema Mernissi joined intellectuals from around the world in analyzing the place of religion, culture, and civilization in the "new world order." This article analyzes how Mernissi developed psychoanalytic, sexual difference feminism from within Muslim sources to critique this emergent form of territoriality. It shows how she attacked Muslim states, particularly Morocco, for appropriating premodern Muslim political theology to narrate their sovereignties in a world dominated by US-led militarism and neoliberalism. Then, it demonstrates how she used female figures, including the pre-Islamic goddess al-ʿUzza and the Moroccan spirit Haguza, to reveal how sexual difference would undermine exclusive claims to territorial sovereignty. Finally, it turns to Jonathan Z. Smith's rejoinder to Mircea Eliade. Mernissi's theory helps us to understand that Smith identified an important relationship between religion and territory but in a way that was androcentric and culturally specific. Shortly after opening in 1936, the Finnish interior design company Artek organized two exhibitions in Helsinki: a model apartment showroom and a display within its shop, both involving a substantial presence of Amazigh carpets from the French protectorate of Morocco. This article analyses these rugs within Artek identifying them as "colonized textiles." This proposed concept aims to highlight textiles within the appropriation of non-Western cultural fragments by structures of imperialism and coloniality, while parallelly problematizing the inclusion of Amazigh rugs within architectural modernism. The movement of Amazigh rugs from Morocco to Finland, and their transition from Amazigh communities to European modernist interiors, are described through key events and exhibitions from the interwar era. The involvement of Artek actors and the process leading to the founding of Artek are highlighted within this context. Exhibitions are presented as a stage for the interaction of discourses on modernism and imperialism, and for the reiteration of constructed narrations directed by élite circles, supporting the appropriation and commodification of colonized textiles in Europe. Political agendas of cultural supervision within the French protectorate of Morocco are described while situating Amazigh rugs in this context. This comparative study assessed hepatitis A virus (HAV) contamination in shellfish harvesting areas in Morocco, and the correlations between viral contamination and rainfall. To this aim, HAV contamination was evaluated in 156 shellfish samples collected at three Moroccan coastal areas (52 samples/area): Dakhla (class A), Oualidia (class B), and Moulay Bousselham (class C). Samples were collected monthly between March 2018 and March 2019, and included oysters from different farms at the Oualidia and Dakhla coastal areas, and wild mussels at the Moulay Bousselham lagoon. HAV was detected by RT-qPCR in 24/156 (15.38%) samples: 16/145 (11.03%) mussel (Mytillus galloprovincialis) and 8/156 (5.13%) oyster (Crassostea gigas) samples. The 16 mussel-positive samples (16/52) were collected at Moulay Bousselham, and the eight oyster-positive samples (8/52) were collected at Oualidia, and none at Dakhla (class A). The highest HAV contamination rate was recorded at Moulay Bousselham lagoon (class C) (30.77%), while it did not exceed 8% at Oualidia (class A). A nonsignificant, positive correlation between HAV-positive samples and mean rainfall was observed. The important HAV presence in bivalve mollusks from the Oualidia and Moulay Bousselham lagoons indicate the need of viral surveillance of bivalve mollusks and of improving wastewater quality to enhance shellfish safety. This article analyses forced migrants' perceptions of "protection", coined here as "protection consciousness". The article is built around the voices and lived experiences of Congolese forced migrants in the Moroccan capital and asks: which aspirations mobilise them?; what does "protection" mean for them?; and do they find it in the law, or elsewhere? Fieldwork data was obtained through observations and 15 interviews with Congolese migrants with self-assessed protection needs in Rabat in 2019. A socio-legal analysis of the data leads to three main findings. First, once they are in Morocco, Congolese forced migrants aspire material subsistence and work rather than "protection", and do so irrespective of the original reason that forced them to leave the DRC. Second, they understand and experience "protection" not as a strictly legal concept, but as physical safety, freedom of movement and spiritual and religious comfort. Third, they feel alienated from State law, conceive it as protection-inhibiting rather than protection-enhancing, and prefer to rely on more informal normative and social orders instead. Theraphosidae is the most diversified family of mygalomorph spiders, commonly known as tarantulas. Two genera inhabit the Mediterranean region: Chaetopelma in the east and Ischnocolus mostly in the western part of the Basin. Their phylogenetic position and the validity of some Ischnocolus species remain unclear. We implemented a multilocus target approach to shed new light on the position of both genera and further integrated molecular data with additional lines of evidence (morphology and ecology) to explore species boundaries in western Mediterranean Ischnocolus. Our results reveal that Ischnocolus and Chaetopelma are not closely related. Chaetopelma formed a clade with the African subfamily Eumenophorinae and Ischnocolus was recovered in a clade comprising all remaining theraphosids. The western Mediterranean Ischnocolus comprises two deeply divergent clades that separated during the Early Miocene and differ in both morphology and lifestyle. We found molecular, morphological and ecological evidence to restore the name Ischnocolus mogadorensis and revalidate this species. We also uncovered distinct allopatric lineages in Ischnocolus elongatus. However, the lack of males, the uniform morphology of females and low within-clade support hampered the assessment of their status and boundaries. Finally, our data support that I. elongatus should be considered a senior synonym of Ischnocolus hancocki and Harpactirella insidiosa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Diabetes remains poorly controlled in a high proportion of diabetes patients. This study examines the prevalence of poor glycaemic control and associated factors in type 2 diabetes patients in the Beni-Mellal Khenifra region in Morocco. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2017 among 1456 diabetes patients attending primary health centres. Demographic and clinical data were collected through face-to-face interviews using structured and pre-tested questionnaires. Anthropometric measurements, including body weight, height and waist circumference were taken using standardized techniques and calibrated equipment. Glycaemic control was assessed in terms of the glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) level and poor glycaemic control was defined as HbA1c ≥7% and a level <7% reflects good glycaemic control. Results Of the total participants, 66.3% had poor glycaemic control. Bivariate analysis showed that sex (p=0.010), education level (p=0.013), body mass index (p=0.048), duration of diabetes (p<0.0001) and type of therapeutic regimen (p<0.0001) were significantly associated with HbA1c level. However, multiple logistic regression analyses revealed that only a longer duration of diabetes (OR 1.525 [95% confidence interval {CI} 1.183–1.967], p=0.001) and receiving insulin therapy alone (OR 1.589 [95% CI 1.157–2.183], p=0.004) or a combination of oral antidiabetics with insulin (OR 2.554 [95% CI 1.786–3.653], p<0.001) were significantly associated with inadequate glycaemic control. Conclusions Despite the particularities of the region, the findings about glycaemic control and its cross-sectionally associated factors are in line with findings from other regions of Morocco. In this subgroup, the longer duration of diabetes and insulin treatment could constitute a cause leading to poor glycaemic control. However, inverse causality cannot be excluded. Background Immigrants and ethnic minorities have been shown to be at increased risk of hospitalization from COVID-19. Our aim was to analyse the contribution of socioeconomic and demographic risk factors on hospital admissions for COVID-19 among immigrants and ethnic minorities compared to the majority population. Methods We used nationwide register data on all hospitalized COVID-19 cases between February and June 2020 (N  = 2232) and random controls from the general population (N  = 498 117). We performed logistic regression analyses and adjusted for age, sex, comorbidity, and socioeconomic and demographic factors. The main outcome measure was hospitalization with COVID-19 and was estimated using odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results Among 2232 COVID-19 cases, the OR of hospitalization with COVID-19 among immigrants and descendants of non-Western origin was 2.5 times higher (95% CI: 2.23–2.89) compared with individuals of Danish origin with most pronounced results among individuals from Iraq, Morocco, Pakistan and Somalia. The OR was largely attributed to comorbidity and socioeconomic factors, especially household size, occupation, and population density. Conclusion There is a significantly higher OR of hospitalization with COVID-19 among non-Western immigrants and ethnic minorities compared with ethnic Danes. This knowledge is crucial for health policymakers and practitioners in both the current and future pandemics to identify more vulnerable groups and target prevention initiatives. Benthic samples collected during several cruises from shelf areas along the West African coast from Morocco to Angola, have highlighted a huge diversity of magelonid species (over 20 species), many of which are undescribed. The majority of samples were taken as part of two large-scale projects in the region: the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem project (CCLME) and the Guinea Current Large Marine Ecosystem project (GCLME). Six magelonid species bearing posterior thoracic pigmentation have been highlighted, Magelona alleni and five species new to science: Magelona fasciata sp. nov. Magelona guineensis sp. nov. Magelona mackiei sp. nov. Magelona nanseni sp. nov. and Magelona picta sp. nov. West African magelonids and comparative material from the UK and Norway have been investigated using COI , 16S and 28S markers. An integrated taxonomic approach is used to delineate species of Magelona carrying posterior thoracic pigmentation. These species from West African waters constitute a well-supported monophyletic group, with the species M. alleni being sister to the new species herein described. Recycled materials and by-products could help solve the waste crisis and support the circular economy. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of potentially available wastes and by-products in Morocco to the local rock Gneiss, for use in sensible heat thermal energy storage. A heat transfer model was developed to undertake the benchmark, a control volume approach and an implicit scheme have been used to solve the modelling equations. The study concludes that Gneiss followed by asbestos-containing waste ceramics presented the fastest charging rates and elevated energy and exergy efficiencies, while the demolition wastes showed the highest amount of recovered energy during longer periods of charge and discharge. This article examines the British expatriate community in Morocco and specifically in Tangier at a formative time in the country's history. Growing French ascendancy in Morocco and the strains imposed by war exposed weaknesses in British prospects in Morocco coupled with declining official interest in Britain's future there. The British community, and merchants involved in the Morocco trade, sought to resist these developments. In doing so they were inspired by war-time patriotism as well as by self-interest. Their efforts took various forms including the establishment of the British Morocco Merchants Association. The article suggests that in view of Morocco's increasingly marginal role in British foreign policy after the First World War, these efforts were unlikely to have much impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new central Pangaea fit (type A) is proposed for the late Ladinian (230 Ma), together with a plate motions model for the subsequent phases of rifting, continental breakup and initial spreading in the central Atlantic. This model is based on: (1) a reinterpretation of the process of formation of the East Coast Magnetic Anomaly along the eastern margin of North America and the corresponding magnetic anomalies at the conjugate margins of northwest Africa and the Moroccan Meseta; (2) an analysis of major rifting events in the central Atlantic, Atlas and central Mediterranean and (3) a crustal balancing of the stretched margins of North America, Moroccan Meseta and northwest Africa. The process of fragmentation of central Pangaea can be described by three major phases spanning the time interval from the late Ladinian (230 Ma) to the Tithonian (147.7 Ma). During the first phase, from the late Ladinian (230 Ma) to the latest Rhaetian (200 Ma), rifting proceeded along the eastern margin of North America, the northwest African margin and the High, Saharan and Tunisian Atlas, determining the formation of a separate Moroccan microplate at the interface between Gondwana and Laurasia. During the second phase, from the latest Rhaetian (200 Ma) to the late Pliensbachian (185 Ma), oceanic crust started forming between the East Coast and Blake Spur magnetic anomalies, whereas the Morrocan Meseta simply continued to rift away from North America. During this time interval, the Atlas rift reached its maximum extent. Finally, the third phase, encompassing the time interval from the late Pliensbachian (185 Ma) to chron M21 (147.7 Ma), was triggered by the northward jump of the main plate boundary connecting the central Atlantic with the Tethys area. Therefore, as soon as rifting in the Atlas zone ceased, plate motion started along complex fault systems between Morocco and Iberia, whereas a rift/drift transition occurred in the northern segment of the central Atlantic, between Morocco and the conjugate margin of Nova Scotia. The inversion of the Atlas rift and the subsequent formation of the Atlas mountain belt occurred during the Oligocene–early Miocene time interval. In the central Atlantic, this event was associated with higher spreading rates of the ridge segments north of the Atlantis FZ. An estimate of 170 km of dextral offset of Morocco relative to northwest Africa, in the central Atlantic, is required by an analysis of marine magnetic anomalies. Five plate tectonic reconstructions and a computer animation are proposed to illustrate the late Triassic and Jurassic process of breakup of Pangaea in the central Atlantic and Atlas regions. Objective Previous research has shown that cognitive tests can lead to misclassification when applying non-representative norms to measure cognitive performance. The objective of this study was to investigate whether this misclassification also occurs with a non-verbal so-called "culture-free" intelligence test administered to different age groups. Method The intelligence of a sample of healthy Moroccan children (N  = 147) ages 7, 9, and 11 was assessed using the Coloured Raven's Progressive Matrices (CPM). Raw scores were used to study age differences, as well as misclassifications when applying the norms of three countries culturally different from Morocco (United Kingdom, Spain, and Oman). Results Intelligence performance was not within the normal range when non-representative norms were applied to the Moroccan raw scores. Misclassifications accounted for a large percentage of the participants that supposedly displayed intelligence deficits, especially when applying the British norms. Up to 15.68% of the healthy children fell within the "intellectually impaired" range, and up to 62.5% fell "below average," with these percentages especially higher at older ages. Conclusions Our findings confirm that "culture-free" tests should be adapted to each culture and applied together with their culture's specific norms to prevent misclassification and allow for a better, unbiased neuropsychological assessment. The Moroccan Model Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) (2019) adds to a growing body of 'new-generation' model BITs that have fuelled the conversation on reforming the investment arbitration system. Broadly speaking, such agreements have attempted to rethink means of dispute resolution and traditional investment protection standards while adding detailed investor obligations and standards of conduct. In that context, this article discusses the provisions of the Moroccan Model BIT (2019), highlighting not only progressive developments but also areas of concern. Objectives Health care workers (HCWs) adopted several protective measures, including hand hygiene and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the frequent use of these preventive measures can lead to skin reactions. Our study aimed to determine the frequency of these reactions in Northern Morocco. In addition, we also looked at the risk factors and the consequences of these injuries on work efficiency and performance. Materials and Methods An anonymous online survey was used to collect data, which was sent to 500 health workers in the study region. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data on IBM SPSS software. Results In total, 273/500 responded to the questionnaire (55%). For the participants' profession, 41% were doctors, 32% were nursing staff, and 26% held other jobs. The general prevalence rate of adverse reactions for all health workers was (80%), including skin problems: after wearing goggles (58%), after wearing surgical masks and respirators (57%), after handwashing and wearing gloves (45%), after wearing a face shield (23%), and after wearing protective clothing (11%). Bleach immersion was highly significantly associated with hand reaction (OR: 2.9, 95% CI: 1.77–4.90; P < 0.001). Moreover, we found a statistically significant association between hand cream use more than twice daily and fewer reactions (OR: 1.9, 95% CI: 0.98–3.77; P = 0.038). The skin reactions related to goggles use were also significantly associated with use duration (OR: 1.7, 95% CI: 0.988–3.12; P = 0.05). Similarly, wearing masks and N95 respirators and their related adverse reactions were significantly associated with use duration (OR: 0.5, 95% CI: 0.20–0.7; P = 0.02). In addition, adverse reactions of regular use of protective clothing were related to the frequency of its use per shift (OR: 3.5, 95% CI: 1.47–8.54; P = 0.05). Conclusions Our survey-based study showed that the prevalence of these skin reactions in our context should not be neglected. The length of daily wearing time and the frequency of PPE uses were the most implicated factors. More attention must be paid to these reactions for better care of HCWs during these critical times. We present the first known cranial remains of the fossil batoid † Onchopristis numidus. Based on two exceptionally well-preserved specimens collected from the 'Kem Kem Beds' (Albian–Cenomanian), south-east Morocco, an almost complete description of the rostral and cranial portions of the genus †O nchopristis is provided, together with new observations regarding the development and arrangement of the rostral denticle series for this genus. The comparison between the rostrum length of the specimens of † O. numidus with those of extant pristids, reveals a relatively large batoid species with an estimated total length between two and four metres. Overall, the cranial morphology of † Onchopristis resembles that of other sclerorhynchoids. Its robust hypertrophied rostrum, with the characteristic wood-like mineralization covering the inner layer of tessellate cartilage at the centre of the rostrum, in addition to the thick lateral layers of densely porous cartilage on the sides of the rostral cartilages, resembles that observed in † Ischyrhiza and † Schizorhiza , and differentiates † Onchopristis from other sclerorhynchoids (e.g. † Libanopristis , † Micropristis and † Sclerorhynchus). Aiming to determinate the phylogenetic relations of † Onchopristis within sclerorhynchoids, a cladistic analysis was carried out based on the remains described here; its results suggest a new taxonomic arrangement within the sclerorhynchoids. The Canary Islands, an archipelago east of Morocco's Atlantic coast, present steep altitudinal gradients covering various climatic zones from hot deserts to subalpine Mediterranean, passing through fog-influenced cloud forests. Unlike the majority of the Canarian flora, Pinus canariensis C. Sm. ex DC. in Buch grow along most of these gradients, allowing the study of plant functioning in contrasting ecosystems. Here we assess the water sources (precipitation, fog) of P. canariensis and its physiological behavior in its different natural environments. We analyzed carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of water and organics from atmosphere, soil and different plant organs and tissues (including 10-year annual time series of tree-ring cellulose) of six sites from 480 to 1990 m above sea level on the Canary Island La Palma. We found a decreasing δ18O trend in source water that was overridden by an increasing δ18O trend in needle water, leaf assimilates and tree-ring cellulose with increasing altitude, suggesting site-specific tree physiological responses to relative humidity. Fog-influenced and fog-free sites showed similar δ13C values, suggesting photosynthetic activity to be limited by stomatal closure and irradiance at certain periods. In addition, we observed an 18O-depletion (fog-free and timberline sites) and 13C-depletion (fog-influenced and fog-free sites) in latewood compared with earlywood caused by seasonal differences in: (i) water uptake (i.e. deeper ground water during summer drought, fog water frequency and interception) and (ii) meteorological conditions (stem radial growth and latewood δ18O correlated with winter precipitation). In addition, we found evidence for foliar water uptake and strong isotopic gradients along the pine needle axis in water and assimilates. These gradients are likely the reason for an unexpected underestimation of pine needle water δ18O when applying standard leaf water δ18O models. Our results indicate that soil water availability and air humidity conditions are the main drivers of the physiological behavior of pine along the Canary Island's altitudinal gradients. Climate change is impacting locally adapted species such as the keystone tree species cork oak (Quercus suber L.). Quantifying the importance of environmental variables in explaining the species distribution can help build resilient populations in restoration projects and design forest management strategies. Using landscape genomics, we investigated the population structure and ecological adaptation of this tree species across the Mediterranean Basin. We applied genotyping by sequencing and derived 2,583 single nucleotide polymorphism markers genotyped from 81 individuals across 17 sites in the studied region. We implemented an approach based on the nearest neighbour haplotype 'coancestry' and uncovered a weak population structure along an east–west climatic gradient across the Mediterranean region. We identified genomic regions potentially involved in local adaptation and predicted differences in the genetic composition across the landscape under current and future climates. Variants associated with temperature and precipitation variables were detected, and we applied a nonlinear multivariate association method, gradient forest, to project these gene–environment relationships across space. The model allowed the identification of geographic areas within the western Mediterranean region most sensitive to climate change: south‐western Iberia and northern Morocco. Polyploidy plays a significant role in the evolution and diversification of flowering plants. In several polyploid complexes, high morphological variability and plasticity coupled with cytogenetic diversity make it difficult to disentangle their evolutionary history. The main goal of this study was to gain insights into the role of whole genome duplications as one of the factors shaping the evolution of flowering plants. Linum suffruticosum s.l. has been described as a polyploid complex, with high morphological variability, but nothing is known about current cytogeographical patterns. We investigated cytotype diversity and distribution patterns in 151 populations covering most of the distribution range, in the Iberian Peninsula, south-eastern France, north-western Italy and Morocco, using flow cytometric analyses complemented with chromosome counts. A high cytogenetic diversity was found with five major cytotypes being detected (diploids, tetraploids, hexaploids, octoploids and decaploids) and with new ploidy levels being reported for the first time. The different ploidies were distributed parapatrically, with geographical structure and several contact zones. Most of the populations comprised one cytotype, but a few mixed-ploidy populations were observed. Our results suggest that whole genome duplications are one of the key mechanisms, alone or together with hybridization, governing the diversification of L. suffruticosum s.l. Genome size and/or chromosome counts might be useful tools for identifying specimens of L. suffruticosum s.l. Also, geographical overlap and high cytogenetic diversity suggest multiple origins of the polyploids. The purpose of this study was to establish the diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) for paediatric head computed tomography (CT) in Morocco and to assess the effective doses received during head CT examinations. The data of 1007 patients were collected retrospectively from Moroccan university children's hospitals. The sample was classified per age group:<1, 1–5, 5–10 and 10–15 years. The proposed DRLs were defined as 75th percentile of the distributions, which were in terms of CT dose index of 26.98, 28.88, 34.00 and 38.20 mGy and dose length product of 461.64, 540.06, 627.20 and 705.98 mGy.cm, respectively. The effective doses estimated were 3.6, 2.9, 2 and 1.79 mSv, respectively. The DRLs reported in Morocco were compared with those of other countries, which were based on the same age grouping method, including Thailand, Switzerland, Japan and the international DRLs. Our initiative via the determination of the first Moroccan diagnostic reference levels for paediatric head CT must be a starting point to spread this investigation towards other examinations and imaging modalities. Why do native citizens of the Middle East and North Africa express greater opposition to certain types of migrants, refugees, and displaced persons? Why, particularly, do they express greater opposition to sub-Saharan African migrants? This article investigates these questions, leveraging results from an original, nationally representative survey of 2700 native Moroccan citizens. We find support for traditional theories, mostly developed from studies of Western Europe, that hypothesize that the perceived cultural, economic, and security threats migrants pose provoke citizen opposition to certain migrant subtypes. Diverging from past research, however, we argue that the importance of these threats waxes and wanes dramatically at the subnational level due to variation in community-level postmaterialism. In areas where economic development is high, and many citizens live in European-style conditions, postmaterialism—preoccupation with cultural, identity, and security-based concerns—helps to predict greater citizen opposition to sub-Saharan African migrants. However, in areas where economic development is low, and many citizens do not live like Europeans, this greater opposition to African migrants derives from economic concerns, notably job competition. While postmaterialism is considered an individual-level phenomenon, our work highlights its importance at the community level: The personal circumstances of citizens and the circumstances of the community in which they live interact to condition which perceived threats become more (or less) important to explaining anti-migrant attitudes. Objectives Older immigrants are affected by an accumulation of adversities related to migration and aging. This study investigates resilience in older immigrants by examining the resources they use to deal with these adversities in the course of their lives. Methods Data from 23 life-story interviews with Turkish and Moroccan immigrants aged 60–69 years living in the Netherlands. Results The circumstances under which individuals foster resilience coincide with four postmigration life stages: settling into the host society, maintaining settlement, restructuring life postretirement, and increasing dependency. Resources that promote resilience include education in the country of origin, dealing with language barriers, having two incomes, making life meaningful, strong social and community networks, and the ability to sustain a transnational lifestyle traveling back and forth to the country of origin. More resilient individuals invest in actively improving their life conditions and are good at accepting conditions that cannot be changed. Discussion The study illustrates a link between conditions across life stages, migration, and resilience. Resilient immigrants are better able to accumulate financial and social and other resources across life stages, whereas less resilient immigrants lose access to resources in different life stages. Background The burden of cardiovascular risk is distributed unequally between ethnic groups. It is uncertain to what extent this is attributable to ethnic differences in general and abdominal obesity. Therefore, we studied the contribution of general and abdominal obesity to metabolic cardiovascular risk among different ethnic groups. Methods We used data of 21 411 participants of Dutch, South-Asian Surinamese, African-Surinamese, Ghanaian, Turkish or Moroccan origin in Healthy Life in an Urban Setting (Amsterdam, the Netherlands). Obesity was defined using body-mass-index (general) or waist-to-height-ratio (abdominal). High metabolic risk was defined as having at least two of the following: triglycerides ≥1.7 mmol/l, fasting glucose ≥5.6 mmol/l, blood pressure ≥130 mmHg systolic and/or ≥85 mmHg diastolic and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol <1.03 mmol/l (men) or <1.29 mmol/l (women). Results Among ethnic minority men, age-adjusted prevalence rates of high metabolic risk ranged from 32 to 59% vs. 33% among Dutch men. Contributions of general obesity to high metabolic risk ranged from 7.1 to 17.8%, vs. 10.1% among Dutch men, whereas contributions of abdominal obesity ranged from 52.1 to 92.3%, vs. 53.9% among Dutch men. Among ethnic minority women, age-adjusted prevalence rates of high metabolic risk ranged from 24 to 35% vs. 12% among Dutch women. Contributions of general obesity ranged from 14.6 to 41.8%, vs. 20% among Dutch women, whereas contributions of abdominal obesity ranged from 68.0 to 92.8%, vs. 72.1% among Dutch women. Conclusions Obesity, especially abdominal obesity, contributes significantly to the prevalence of high metabolic cardiovascular risk. Background and Objectives In this study, we examine the experience of aging and subjective views of what it means to age well among older adults with a migrant background in the Netherlands. We embed the study within the successful aging debate and tackle two of its most persistent critiques: the failure to adequately include subjective views in the definition of aging well and the failure to recognize that the process of aging is culturally determined. Research Design and Methods The research draws on qualitative data collected through eight focus-group discussions with the six largest migrant groups in the Netherlands, namely Indo-Dutch and Moluccans, and migrants with Western, Surinamese, Antillean, Turkish, and Moroccan background. Results The study findings show that in general older migrants experience aging more positively than commonly assumed. Nevertheless, some negative aspects of aging were also mentioned. These together with fears about the future underpin participants' perceptions about aging well. Key aspects of successful aging include remaining healthy, independent, and engaged. Differences between and within groups exist in the meaning given to these concepts and the extent to which other specific aging-related wishes were mentioned. These differences are rooted in participants' experiences of the migration event, employment history, and their current socioeconomic conditions. Discussion and Implications We conclude that the life course perspective is essential in understanding migrants' aging process and their views on successful aging, and suggest that policies and interventions which promote disease prevention and tackle social exclusion will be beneficial for older adults with a migration background. To what extent, if any, do the issue priorities of elites overlap with that of the public under competitive authoritarianism? While previous studies examined the overlap of the priorities of elites and ordinary citizens in democracies, our knowledge is still limited when we move beyond these contexts. This article aims to contribute to the democratisation and legislative politics literature by testing congruence of issue priorities under competitive authoritarianism. Analysing more than 10,000 legislative texts from the 2012 Moroccan parliament, we found high levels of congruence between the issue priorities of legislators and citizens, especially in non-legislative activities (i.e. parliamentary questions). Moreover, contrary to earlier studies on clientelism and citizen-elite linkage in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, our results demonstrate a higher correlation between the priorities of the two largest political parties and the mass public, when compared with those parties' core supporters. Within the Unionoida the family Margaritiferidae is a small but widely distributed group, whose number of genera and species is under discussion. Using molecular and morphological characters, the present paper redescribes several Moroccan specimens of Margaritifera, previously classified as M. auricularia marocana. The shell and anatomical features of the taxon are similar to those observed in European specimens of M. auricularia auricularia. Notwithstanding, the two subspecies can be separated by certain hinge characters. Partial sequences of the mitochondrial genes COI and 16S rRNA support recognition of the Moroccan populations as a different species: Margaritifera marocana. We examined the phylogenetic relationships of the Margaritiferidae. The COI data indicated two monophyletic clades: one including M. margaritifera, M. dahurica, M. falcata and M. laevis, and the second comprising M. auricularia from the Iberian Peninsula and the Moroccan specimens of M. marocana as an independent lineage. Background and Aims The development of Arundo donax as a biomass crop for use on drought-prone marginal lands in areas with warm to hot climates is constrained by the lack of variation within this species. We investigated the effect of morphological and physiological variation on growth and tolerance to drought under field conditions in three ecotypes of A. donax collected from habitats representing a climate gradient: a pre-desert in Morocco, a semi-arid Mediterranean climate in southern Italy and a warm sub-humid region of central Italy. Methods The three A. donax ecotypes were grown under irrigated and rain-fed conditions in a common garden field trial in a region with a semi-arid Mediterranean climate. Physiological and morphological characteristics, and carbohydrate metabolism of the ecotypes were recorded to establish which traits were associated with yield and/or drought tolerance. Key Results Variation was observed between the A. donax ecotypes. The ecotype from the most arid habitat produced the highest biomass yield. Stem height and the retention of photosynthetic capacity later in the year were key traits associated with differences in biomass yield. The downregulation of photosynthetic capacity was not associated with changes in foliar concentrations of sugars or starch. Rain-fed plants maintained photosynthesis and growth later in the year compared with irrigated plants that began to senescence earlier, thus minimizing the difference in yield. Effective stomatal control prevented excessive water loss, and the emission of isoprene stabilized photosynthetic membranes under drought and heat stress in A. donax plants grown under rain-fed conditions without supplementary irrigation. Conclusions Arundo donax is well adapted to cultivation in drought-prone areas with warm to hot climates. None of the A. donax ecotypes exhibited all of the desired traits consistent with an 'ideotype'. Breeding or genetic (identification of quantitative trait loci) improvement of A. donax should select ecotypes on the basis of stem morphology and the retention of photosynthetic capacity. Background The burden of multimorbidity is likely higher in ethnic minority populations, as most individual diseases are more prevalent in minority groups. However, information is scarce. We examined ethnic inequalities in multimorbidity, and investigated to what extent they reflect differences in socioeconomic status (SES). Methods We included Healthy Life in an Urban Setting study participants of Dutch (N = 4582), South-Asian Surinamese (N = 3258), African Surinamese (N = 4267), Ghanaian (N = 2282), Turkish (N = 3879) and Moroccan (N = 4094) origin (aged 18–70 years). Educational level, employment status, income situation and multimorbidity were defined based on questionnaires. We described the prevalence and examined age-adjusted ethnic inequalities in multimorbidity with logistic regression analyses. To assess the contribution of SES, we added SES indicators to the age-adjusted model. Results The prevalence of multimorbidity ranged from 27.1 to 53.4% in men and from 38.5 to 69.6% in women. The prevalence of multimorbidity in most ethnic minority groups was comparable to the prevalence among Dutch participants who were 1–3 decades older. After adjustment for SES, the odds of multimorbidity remained significantly higher in ethnic minority groups. For instance, age-adjusted OR for multimorbidity for the Turkish compared to the Dutch changed from 4.43 (3.84–5.13) to 2.34 (1.99–2.75) in men and from 5.35 (4.69–6.10) to 2.94 (2.54–3.41) in women after simultaneous adjustment for all SES indicators. Conclusions We found a significantly higher prevalence of multimorbidity in ethnic minority men and women compared to Dutch, and results pointed to an earlier onset of multimorbidity in ethnic minority groups. Durophagous mosasaurs are rare members of Late Cretaceous marine faunal assemblages and new fossil discoveries can shed light on their anatomy, functional morphology and evolutionary history. Here we describe a new species in the durophagous genus Globidens from the Maastrichtian phosphate deposits of Morocco, based on a partial disarticulated skull and cervical vertebral series. This new species shares many anatomical similarities with the only other described Maastrichtian species, G. phosphaticus , but differs in several key features, including the absence of pronounced swellings and sulci on the crushing teeth and the absence of cervical zygosphenes and zygantra. Histological thin sections of a rib from the holotype show that this was not a juvenile individual and reveal osteosclerotic-like bone compactness for the first time in a paddle-bearing mosasaurine. We interpret the highly compact ribs, as well as several peculiarities of the temporal arcade and lower jaws, as adaptations to a diet of benthic, hard-bodied prey. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mantle melting dynamics of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) is constrained from new platinum group element (PGE), gold (Au), rare earth element (REE), and high field strength element (HFSE) data and geochemical modelling of flood basalts in Morocco. The PGE are enriched similarly to flood basalts of other large igneous provinces. The magmas did not experience sulphide saturation during fractionation and were therefore fertile. The CAMP is thus prospective for PGE and gold mineralization. The Pt/Pd ratio of the Moroccan lavas indicates that they originated by partial melting of the asthenospheric mantle, not the subcontinental lithospheric mantle. Mantle melting modelling of PGE, REE and HFSE suggests the following: (1) the mantle source for all the lavas was dominated by primitive mantle and invariably included a small proportion of recycled continental crust (<8%); (2) the mantle potential temperature was moderately elevated (c. 1430°C) relative to ambient mantle; (3) intra-lava unit compositional variations are probably a combined result of variable amounts of crust in the mantle source (heterogeneous source) and fractional crystallization; (4) mantle melting initially took place at depths between c. 110 and c. 55 km and became shallower with time (c. 110 to c. 32 km depth); (5) the melting region appears to have changed from triangular to columnar with time. These results are best explained by melting of asthenospheric mantle that was mixed with continental sediments during the assembly of Pangaea, then heated and further mixed by convection while insulated under the Pangaea supercontinent, and subsequently melted in multiple continental rift systems associated with the breakup of Pangaea. Most probably the CAMP volcanism was triggered by the arrival of a mantle plume, although plume material apparently was not contributing directly (chemically) to the magmas in Morocco, nor to many other areas of CAMP. The Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) is a large igneous province (LIP) composed of basic dykes, sills, layered intrusions and lava flows emplaced before Pangea break-up and currently distributed on the four continents surrounding the Atlantic Ocean. One of the oldest, best preserved and most complete sub-provinces of the CAMP is located in Morocco. Geochemical, geochronologic, petrographic and magnetostratigraphic data obtained in previous studies allowed identification of four strato-chemical magmatic units, i.e. the Lower, Intermediate, Upper and Recurrent units. For this study, we completed a detailed sampling of the CAMP in Morocco, from the Anti Atlas in the south to the Meseta in the north. We provide a complete mineralogical, petrologic (major and trace elements on whole-rocks and minerals), geochronologic (40Ar/39Ar and U–Pb ages) and geochemical set of data (including Sr–Nd–Pb–Os isotope systematics) for basaltic and basaltic–andesitic lava flow piles and for their presumed feeder dykes and sills. Combined with field observations, these data suggest a very rapid (<0·3 Ma) emplacement of over 95% of the preserved magmatic rocks. In particular, new and previously published data for the Lower to Upper unit samples yielded indistinguishable 40Ar/39Ar (mean age = 201·2 ± 0·8 Ma) and U–Pb ages (201·57 ± 0·04 Ma), suggesting emplacement coincident with the main phase of the end-Triassic biotic turnover (c.201·5 to 201·3 Ma). Eruptions are suggested to have been pulsed with rates in excess of 10 km3/year during five main volcanic pulses, each pulse possibly lasting only a few centuries. Such high eruption rates reinforce the likelihood that CAMP magmatism triggered the end-Triassic climate change and mass extinction. Only the Recurrent unit may have been younger but by no more than 1 Ma. Whole-rock and mineral geochemistry constrain the petrogenesis of the CAMP basalts. The Moroccan magmas evolved in mid-crustal reservoirs (7–20 km deep) where most of the differentiation occurred. However, a previous stage of crystallization probably occurred at even greater depths. The four units cannot be linked by closed-system fractional crystallization processes, but require distinct parental magmas and/or distinct crustal assimilation processes. EC-AFC modeling shows that limited crustal assimilation (maximum c.5–8% assimilation of e.g. Eburnean or Pan-African granites) could explain some, but not all the observed geochemical variations. Intermediate unit magmas are apparently the most contaminated and may have been derived from parental magmas similar to the Upper basalts (as attested by indistinguishable trace element contents in the augites analysed for these units). Chemical differences between Central High Atlas and Middle Atlas samples in the Intermediate unit could be explained by distinct crustal contaminants (lower crustal rocks or Pan-African granites for the former and Eburnean granites for the latter). The CAMP units in Morocco are likely derived from 5–10% melting of enriched peridotite sources. The differences observed in REE ratios for the four units are attributed to variations in both source mineralogy and melting degree. In particular, the Lower basalts require a garnet peridotite source, while the Upper basalts were probably formed from a shallower melting region straddling the garnet–spinel transition. Recurrent basalts instead are relatively shallow-level melts generated mainly from spinel peridotites. Sr–Nd–Pb–Os isotopic ratios in the CAMP units from Morocco are similar to those of other CAMP sub-provinces and suggest a significant enrichment of the mantle-source regions by subducted crustal components. The enriched signature is attributed to involvement of about 5–10% recycled crustal materials introduced into an ambient depleted or PREMA-type mantle, while involvement of mantle-plume components like those sampled by present-day Central Atlantic Ocean Island Basalts (OIB, e.g. Cape Verde and Canary Islands) is not supported by the observed compositions. Background Diabetes type 2 is more prevalent in people from ethnic minorities in the Netherlands, and outcomes of care are worse compared with other Dutch people. Dieticians experience difficulties in managing these groups in self-management and adherence to dietary advice. The aim of this study was to explore the views regarding a healthy diet and dietetic care among ethnic minority type 2 diabetes patients. Methods Semi-structured interviews were held with 12 migrants with diabetes from Turkey, Morocco, Iraq and Curacao, who visited a dietician. Inclusion went on until saturation was reached. The interview guide was based on the Attitudes, Social influence and self-Efficacy (ASE) model and Kleinman's explanatory model of illness. Interviews were held in the language preferred by the respondent. Transcripts were coded and thematically analyzed. Results Several respondents expected a more rigorous, directive and technical approach of the dietician. All respondents acknowledged the importance of a healthy diet. What they considered healthy was determined by culturally influenced ideas about health benefits of specific foods. Important hindrances for dietary change were lack of self-efficacy and social support. Social influences were experienced both as supportive and a hindrance. Conclusions Migrant diabetic patients' opinions about healthy food are determined by culturally influenced ideas rather than by dietary guidelines. Dutch dietary care is not tailored to the needs of these patients and should take into account migrants' expectations, cultural differences in dietary habits and specifically address the role of family. A recent study commissioned by the United States Agency for International Development to assess the effectiveness of its spending on democracy in its programs worldwide found that such aid works—with the sole exception of programs in the Middle East. What explains this exception? I argue that previous studies on democracy aid pay insufficient attention to the fact that such programs often develop as negotiated deals. Because authoritarian regimes may choose how to accept assistance, democracy aid may reward economic interests tied to incumbent regimes. This article focuses on the symbolic nature of the policing of migrations and mobility, by looking at discussions on visa policies between Morocco and European countries. I argue that it is important to take seriously the symbolic, moral and emotional arguments put forward by state actors in the South in order to understand their claims and the unfolding of negotiations. The contestation of European visa policies then appears not only as a contestation of specific visas, but more generally as a contestation of inequalities in the policing of migration. Unequal policing is interpreted as both a result and a reinforcing element of international hierarchies, which are subtly questioned through claims for the free movement of people. Correlations between major and minor transition elements in tectonically emplaced orogenic peridotites have been ascribed to variable degrees of melt extraction and melt-rock reaction processes, leading to depletion or refertilization. To elucidate how such processes are recorded in the subcontinental lithospheric mantle, we processed a large geochemical dataset for peridotites from the four tectono-metamorphic domains of the Beni Bousera orogenic massif (Rif Belt, northern Morocco). Our study reveals that variations in bulk-rock major and minor elements, Mg-number and modal mineralogy of lherzolites, as well as their clinopyroxene trace element compositions, are inconsistent with simple partial melting and mainly resulted from different reactions between melts and depleted peridotites. Up to 30% melting at<3 GPa and cryptic metasomatism can account for the geochemical variations of most harzburgites. In Grt-Sp mylonites, melting and melt-rock reactions are masked by tectonic mixing with garnet pyroxenites and subsolidus re-equilibration. In the rest of the massif, lherzolites were mostly produced by refertilization of a refractory protolith (Mg-number ~ 91, Ol ~ 70%, Cpx/Opx04) via two distinct near-solidus, melt- rock reactions: (1) clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene precipitation and olivine consumption at melt/rock ratios <0·75 and variable mass ratio between crystallized minerals and infiltrated melt (R), which are recorded fairly homogeneously throughout the massif; (2) dissolution of orthopyroxene and precipitation of clinopyroxene and olivine at melt/rock ratios ≤1 and R=0·2-0·3, which affected mainly the Arie` gite-Seiland and Seiland domains. The distribution of secondary lherzolites in the massif suggests that the first refertilization reaction occurred prior to the differentiation of the Beni Bousera mantle section into petro-structural zones, whereas the second reaction was associated with the development of the tectono-metamorphic domains. This article focuses on the role of the International Committee of the Red Cross ( I. C. R. C.) in the Rif War ( Morocco, 1921-6) and places humanitarian action in three inter-related contexts: the complexity of the international scenario after the First World War, the institutional architecture of the Red Cross and the developments in international humanitarian law. Challenging simplistic approaches to an otherwise historically overlooked affair, the article argues that the rather undignified role of the I. C. R. In most Western states, probation of juvenile delinquents spearheads social policies. The general idea behind these policies is to protect society against the wrongdoing of young offenders by monitoring and rehabilitating them. The mixture of corrective and supportive approaches makes juvenile probation a hybrid practice. This study analyses the interactional strategies of both probation officers and juveniles to deal with this situation. It is shown that participation in conversations about recidivism and risky behaviour creates the opportunity for juveniles to show genuine intent to change their problematic behaviour and for probation officers to assessthechancesoffuture progress in a more realistic way. Objectives. Empirical work with western populations suggests that aging is associated with changes in economic decision making, including, for example, increased prosocial tendencies. We investigated the generality of age effects in social and nonsocial domains by assessing various measures of economic decision making in a rural population from Morocco. Method. We measured age/cohort differences using a number of economic games (risk game, time preferences game, dictator game, trust game, and public goods game) in over 700 participants ranging from 17 to 92 years of age. Results. The results suggest a negative relation between age and risk taking and a concave relation between age and contribution to a public good, but no significant age trends in time preferences, altruism, trust, or trustworthiness. Discussion. Our results indicate that the relationship between aging and decision making is not universal and is shaped by local culture and the type of task rather than biological factors alone. This study shows that Moroccan media elites allow for a continued influence of the French ex-colonial power in the television industry while making sure that the state's cultural agenda is preserved through censorship. I argue that elites' desire to reaffirm their position of power within Moroccan society, as well as international pressure toward democratization, makes them gravitate toward a specific type of French-Moroccan hybridity. The article discusses a research study on the influence of gender interaction on public opinion about women in politics in Morocco. Objectives: Scarce and limited epidemiological, clinical and microbiological data are available regarding paediatric respiratory tract infections in the Kingdom of Morocco, a middle-income country in northwestern Africa. The results of hospital-based surveillance aiming at describing the aetiology and epidemiology of respiratory distress among children <5 years of age are presented.Methods: Children admitted to the Hôpital d’Enfants de Rabat, Morocco, and meeting the World Health Organization clinical criteria for severe pneumonia were recruited over a period of 14 months and were thoroughly investigated to ascertain a definitive diagnosis.Results: In total, 700 children were recruited for the study. Most frequent clinical diagnoses included wheezing-related conditions (bronchitis/asthma, 46%; bronchiolitis, 15%), while typical bacterial pneumonia was infrequent (only 19% of the cases). Invasive bacterial disease detected by classical microbiology or molecular methods was also uncommon, affecting only 3.5% of the patients, and with an overall low detection of pneumococcal or Haemophilus influenzae type b disease. Conversely, coverage of respiratory viral detection in the nasopharynx was almost universal among cases (92%), with the three most frequent viruses detected being rhinovirus (53%), respiratory syncytial virus (18%) and adenovirus (17%). The overall case fatality rate (CFR) among recruited patients with a known outcome was 4.1% (28/690).Conclusions: In Morocco, the epidemiological profile of paediatric acute respiratory infections is markedly shifted towards wheezing-related diseases and thus resembles that of high-income countries. In androdioecious metapopulations, where males co-occur with hermaphrodites, the absence of males from certain populations or regions may be explained by locally high selfing rates, high hermaphrodite outcross siring success (e.g. due to high pollen production by hermaphrodites), or to stochastic processes (e.g. the failure of males to invade populations or regions following colonization or range expansion by hermaphrodites). In the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco, the presence of males with hermaphrodites in the wind-pollinated androdioecious plant Mercurialis annua (Euphorbiaceae) varies both among populations within relatively small regions and among regions, with some regions lacking males from all populations. The species is known to have expanded its range into the Iberian Peninsula from a southern refugium. To account for variation in male presence in M. annua, we test the following hypotheses: (1) that males are absent in areas where plant densities are lower, because selfing rates should be correspondingly higher; (2) that males are absent in areas where hermaphrodites produce more pollen; and (3) that males are absent in areas where there is an elevated proportion of populations in which plant density and hermaphrodite pollen production disfavour their invasion. We found support for predictions two and three in Morocco (the putative Pleistocene refugium for M. annua) but no support for any hypothesis in Iberia (the expanded range). Our results are partially consistent with a hypothesis of sex-allocation equilibrium for populations in Morocco; in Iberia, the absence of males from large geographical regions is more consistent with a model of sex-ratio evolution in a metapopulation with recurrent population turnover. This article uses a company law reform in Morocco as a natural experiment to study the value of corporate governance for bank credit. In 2001, Morocco replaced a company law from 19th-century France with modern standards of corporate accountability; this reform was very similar to reforms implemented in many developing countries at about the same time. I evaluate the impact of that reform upon manufacturing firms’ access to bank credit, using panel data to test the effect upon bank overdraft provision of a firm’s legal obligations (i.e., the firm’s choice of the more onerous SA status rather than the less onerous SARL). I find that the reform induced many SA firms to switch to SARL, and that—relative to firms remaining in the SA status—this caused a significant and substantial withdrawal of overdraft facilities. I show that this result is robust to firm’s fixed effects and to the choice of explanatory variables, and I consider heterogeneous effects across different firms.
