How the first-order structure of the magnetic field changed through geological time is one of the most long-living and hotly debated questions in geomagnetism. For the last 5 Ma, the geomagnetic field is found to be essentially dipolar with about 5 per cent quadrupole term and, possibly, still smaller octupole term. Proving this became possible after accumulation of a large set of globally distributed reliable palaeomagnetic data and their analysis in the coordinates tied to the rotation axis. For older times, the data are less reliable, scarce and unevenly distributed, while tectonic motions destroyed the global coordinates. In this paper, a method to determine the geomagnetic field structure for a single plate is discussed. It is suggested that the coordinate system for analysis can be derived from great circles, each being drawn through a sampling point and the corresponding palaeomagnetic pole (SP-circle). Such circles are to intersect at a true (i.e. pure dipole) pole that is largely purified from the contributions of non-dipole zonal terms and inclination shallowing. The scrutiny of late Permian (270–250 Ma) palaeomagnetic poles from Northern Eurasia revealed two distinct groups: one includes several poles from a limited area in South France (SF), and the other consists of tightly clustered nine poles from locations spread over a large part of Eurasia. Tentatively, the former group can be explained by either rotation of SF with respect to main Eurasia, or less likely, remagnetization in Early Triassic time; irrespectively, these poles cannot be used for calculation of the true dipole pole nor for computation of the apparent polar wander path of Eurasia. The poles from the main part of Eurasia were used to find the position of the true dipole pole of this plate and for analysis of the field. The minimum of residual dispersion of the observed data is found for the quadrupole and octupole terms of less than 10 per cent when each term is varied separately. When both terms are varied together, the best fit is observed for the quadrupole and octupole terms of −4 and 12 per cent, respectively. Our analysis shows that the position of the true dipole pole is robust, while the estimates of non-dipole terms are not. We argue that these estimates should be regarded as the upper limits on the non-dipole contributions to the Late Permian geomagnetic field; at the same time, we are pretty sure that octupole term of 20 per cent or more are not permitted by the data. In this paper, we present inversion results for regional Pg and Sg phases for the Eurasian continent to explore its use for understanding upper crustal velocity structure. Tomographic inversion of traveltimes from first arriving compressional and shear waves for velocity structure has been applied with great success at all length scales, ranging from the laboratory bench-top to the entire Earth, while inversion of later arriving phases has been much more limited. Our inversion is performed using a damped, smoothed LSQR implementation that solves for site and event terms as well as for velocity along great circle paths between the source and receiver. Results are broadly consistent with published upper crustal velocities for Eurasia, with predominantly high velocities in cratonic regions. Generally, but not always, lower velocities are observed in orogenic and extensional areas and in deep sedimentary basins. A spot-comparison of VP/ VS from local and regional studies compares well with the ratio of observed Pg to Sg velocities from our study where resolution is high. Resolution is determined through the use of checkerboard tests, and these suggest that in regions where data density is high we can resolve features down to at least 2°, with 4° possible over broader areas. rms residual reductions are on the order of 25 per cent for Sg and 30 per cent for Pg. Wind power is increasingly vital for meeting energy challenges and mitigating global climate change and is therefore an important part of renewable energy portfolios in many countries. Given the key and evolving roles of European and Asian countries in driving this sector, this article focuses on two sets of key questions: first, do wind power innovation paths differ between Europe and Asia? If so, how do they differ? Second, do innovation paths reflect different initial conditions in Europe and Asia? Can we expect divergence in the future? We find that although national paths are shaped by a range of national characteristics and therefore differ along key dimensions, the increasing roles of cross-national firm interactions amplify tendencies towards global convergence. These patterns of divergence and convergence can potentially enhance the contribution of wind power to the low-carbon transition but also have implications for the competitive dynamics of the wind power industry. Resistive forces along convergent plate boundaries have a major impact on surface deformation, most visibly at collisional plate boundaries. Although quantification of these forces is key to understanding the evolution and present state of mountain belts, they remain highly uncertain due to the complexity of plate boundary structures and rheologies. In previous studies of the Eurasian Plate, we have analysed the balance of plate boundary forces, tractions resulting from lithosphere–mantle coupling, and intraplate variations in topography and density structure. This yielded a range of acceptable force distributions. In this study, we investigate to which extent the observed present-day stress field provides further constraints on the distribution of forces.We address the dynamics of the Eurasian Plate as a whole. This enables us to base our analysis on mechanical equilibrium of a tectonic plate and to evaluate all forces as part of an internally consistent set of forces driving and deforming Eurasia. We incorporate tractions from convective mantle flow modelling in a lithospheric model in which edge and lithospheric body forces are modelled explicitly and compute resulting stresses in a homogeneous elastic thin shell. Intraplate stress observations used are from the World Stress Map project. Eurasia's stress field turns out to be particularly sensitive to the distribution of collision forces on the plate's southern margin and, to a much lesser extent, to lithospheric density structure and tractions from mantle flow. Stress observations require collision forces on the India–Eurasia boundary of 7.0–10.5 TN m−1 and on the Arabia–Eurasia boundary of 1.3–2.7 TN m−1. Implication of mechanical equilibrium of the plate is that forces on the contacts with the African and Australian plates amount to 1.0–2.5 and 0–1.3 TN m−1, respectively. We use our results to assess the validity of the classical view that the mean elevation of an orogenic plateau can be taken as a measure of the magnitude of the compressive (in this case: collision-related) forces involved. For both the Tibetan and the Iranian plateaus, two plateaus with significantly different average elevations, we find that the horizontal force derived from the excess gravitational potential energy (collapse force) is in balance with the collision force. ShakeMap package uses empirical ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs) to estimate the ground motion where recorded data are not available. The GMPEs, however, account only for average characteristics of source and wave propagation processes and the ground motion estimate can fail in the near-source area when few stations are available.In this study, we investigate the performance of ShakeMap in the near-fault area when source effects are included at different levels of complexity. We focus on the 2008, Mw 7.0, Iwate-Miyagi Nairiku (Japan) earthquake because of the large amount of recording stations which contribute to the definition of a reference shakemap. After shutting off some stations from the original data set, we evaluate the resulting shakemaps bias as if the earthquake was recorded at a smaller number of receivers. We then compute the shakemaps replacing the missing records with synthetic seismograms from a hybrid deterministic-stochastic method for extended fault. We suppose an increasing knowledge of seismic source approximation and of the slip history on the fault, obtained both from the expeditious inversion of teleseismic data and, afterwards, from strong-motion data inversion. In particular, a non-linear kinematic inversion technique allowed us to retrieve a complete kinematic description of the source process on the fault plane.Our results reveal that the integration of real data with synthetics is quite efficient, providing reliable shaking maps mainly when near source recordings are scarce. However, the accuracy of the fault plane position plays a major role in increasing the effectiveness of the results.We then apply the methodology to a poorly instrumented earthquake of similar magnitude, the 1980, Ms 6.9, Irpinia (Southern Italy) earthquake. Based on a compilation of 533 Cretaceous to present-day palaeomagnetic poles obtained from both sedimentary and igneous rocks, we present a new analysis of the so-called ‘Asian inclination anomaly’ and demonstrated the anomaly to be twofold: a 2nd-order anomaly, characterized by high palaeolatitudes in Indochina and low palaeolatitudes over Tibet and Central Asia, is superimposed on a 1st-order anomaly, characterized by Cenozoic low palaeolatitudes found all over northeastern Asian stable blocks. The analysis herein convincingly shows that the Europe Apparent Polar Wandering Path (APWP) can no longer be used to interpret palaeomagnetic data East of the Urals, including interpretation of Asian Tertiary deformation related to the India–Asia Collision. We, thus, construct a new APWP for East Asia, based on palaeopoles from blocks assumed to be stable. This new APWP is consistent with and reinforces previous analyses of Asian tectonics, such as the age (∼55 Ma) and locus (∼5–10°N) of the Indo-Asian collision, the lateral extrusion of SE Asian continental blocks and the intracontinental shortening in Central Asia. Possible origins of the 1st-order palaeolatitude anomaly are: (1) a geomagnetic origin, due to long-lasting non-dipolar contribution to the magnetic field and (2) a tectonic hypothesis, in which a newly defined East Asia Plate was located ∼10° farther south than expected from the current Europe APWP. Based on a set of six new reconstructions from 90 Ma to present, we show that our tectonic model reconciles geophysical, geological and tectonic observations throughout Eurasia, from Siberia to Europe, including kinematics in the Arctic Ocean, up to northwestern Arctic Alaska. Beyond possible occurrences of non-dipolar field contribution and/or local inclination flattening in the sedimentary data, our model leads us to conclude that Cenozoic tectonics is the dominant contributor to the observed 1st-order ∼10° low palaeolatitude anomaly over Asia during the Tertiary. We estimate radial anisotropy along the Tethyan margin by jointly fitting regional S and Love waveform trains and fundamental-mode Love-wave group velocities. About 3600 wave trains with S and Love waves and 5700 Love-wave group velocity dispersion curves are jointly inverted for SH-velocity perturbations from a pre-existing, 3-D SV-velocity model. These perturbations are predominantly positive ( SH faster than SV) and consistent with PREM, but our model also shows significant lateral variation in radial anisotropy that appears to be correlated with tectonic environment. SH waves travel faster than SV wave beneath backarc basins, oceans and orogenic belts such as the Tyrrhenian and Pannonian basins, the Ionian Sea, the Alps, the Apennines, the Dinarides and the Caucasus. The Algero-Provençal basin, however, is underlain by faster SV velocity. Faster SV velocity of radial anisotropy is also detected within cratons such as the East European platform and the Arabian shield. Beneath hotspots we detect a change in radial anisotropic polarity with depth, which may be caused by transition between the lattice-preferred orientation from horizontal deformation in the asthenosphere and the shape-preferred orientation from vertically oriented melt channels in the lithosphere. We develop an approach that allows us to invert for the mantle velocity structure within a finely parametrized region as a perturbation with respect to a low-resolution, global tomographic model. We implement this technique to investigate the upper-mantle structure beneath Eurasia and present a new model of shear wave velocity, parametrized laterally using spherical splines with ∼2.9° spacing in Eurasia and ∼11.5° spacing elsewhere. The model is obtained from a combined data set of surface wave phase velocities, long-period waveforms and body-wave traveltimes. We identify many features as narrow as few hundred kilometres in diameter, such as subducting slabs in eastern Eurasia and slow-velocity anomalies beneath tectonically active regions. In contrast to regional studies in which these features have been identified, our model encompasses the structure of the entire Eurasian continent. Furthermore, including mantle- and body-wave waveforms helped us constrain structures at depths larger than 250 km, which are poorly resolved in earlier models. We find that up to +9 per cent faster-than-average anomalies within the uppermost ∼200 km of the mantle beneath cratons and some orogenic regions are separated by a sharp gradient zone from deeper, +1 to +2 per cent anomalies. We speculate that this gradient zone may represent a boundary separating the lithosphere from the continental root, which might be compositionally distinct from the overlying lithosphere and remain stable either due to its compositional buoyancy or due to higher viscosity compared with the suboceanic mantle. We studied Upper Permian redbeds from two areas, one between the Urals and the Volga River in the southeastern part of Baltica and the other in north Kazakhstan within the Ural-Mongol belt, which are about 900 km apart; a limited collection of Lower-Middle Triassic volcanics from north Kazakhstan was also studied. A high-temperature component that shows rectilinear decay to the origin was isolated from most samples of all three collections. For the Late Permian of north Kazakhstan, the area-mean direction of this component is D= 224.3°, I=−56.8°, k= 161, α95= 2.7°, N= 18 sites, palaeopole at 53.4°N, 161.3°E; the fold test is positive. The Triassic result ( D= 55.9°, I=+69.1°, k= 208, α95= 4.2°, N= 7 sites, pole at 57.0°N, 134.1°E) is confirmed by a positive reversal test. The corresponding palaeomagnetic poles from north Kazakhstan show good agreement with the APWP for Baltica, thus indicating no substantial motion between the two areas that are separated by the Urals. Our new mean Late Permian direction for SE Baltica ( D= 42.2°, I= 39.2°, k= 94, α95= 3.5°, N= 17 sites; palaeopole at 45.6°N, 170.2°E) is confirmed as near-primary by a positive tilt test and the presence of dual-polarity directions. The corresponding pole also falls on the APWP of Baltica, but is far-sided with respect to the coeval reference poles, as the observed mean inclination is shallower than expected by 13°± 4°. In principle, lower-than-expected inclinations may be attributed to one or more of the following causes: relative tectonic displacements, quadrupole and octupole terms in the geomagnetic field, higher-order harmonics (incl. secular variation) of the same field, random scatter, non-removed overprints, or inclination error during remanence acquisition and/or diagenetic compaction. Our analysis shows that most mechanisms from the above list cannot explain the observed pattern, leaving as the most likely option that it must be accounted for by inclination shallowing. Comparison with selected coeval results from eastern Baltica (all within Russia) shows that all of them are biased in the same way. This implies that they cannot be used for analysis of geomagnetic field characteristics, such as non-dipole contributions, without a more adequate knowledge of the required correction for inclination shallowing. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS nuclear rDNA) data have been obtained from 190 terrestrial orchid species, encompassing all genera and the great majority of the widely recognized species of Orchidinae, a heterogeneous selection of species of Habenariinae, and single species of Satyriinae and Disinae (the latter serving as outgroup). The resulting parsimony-based phylogeny reveals 12 well-resolved clades within the Orchidinae, based on Anacamptis s.l. , Serapias , Ophrys , Steveniella –Himantoglossum s.l. (including ‘Comperia’ and ‘Barlia’ , most species being 2n = 36), Neotinea s.l. , Traunsteinera –Chamorchis , Orchis s.s. , Pseudorchis –Amerorchis –Galearis –Neolindleya –Platanthera s.l. (most 2n = 42), Dactylorhiza s.l. , Gymnadenia s.l. (most 2n = 40, 80), Ponerorchis s.l. –Hemipilia s.l. –Amitostigma –Neottianthe , and Brachycorythis (most 2n = 42). Relationships are less clearly resolved among these 12 clades, as are those within Habenariinae; the subtribe appears either weakly supported as monophyletic or as paraphyletic under maximum parsimony, and the species-rich genus Habenaria is clearly highly polyphyletic. The triphyly of Orchis as previously delimited is confirmed, and the improved sampling allows further generic transfers to Anacamptis s.l. and Neotinea s.l. In addition, justifications are given for: (1) establishing Steveniella as the basally divergent member of an appreciably expanded Himantoglossum that incorporates the former genera ‘Barlia ’ and ‘Comperia ’, (2) reuniting ‘Piperia ’ with a broadly defined Platanthera as section Piperia , necessitating ten new combinations, (3) broadening Ponerorchis to include Chusua , and Hemipilia to include single ‘orphan’ species of Ponerorchis and Habenaria , and (4) recognizing ‘Gymnadenia ’camtschatica as the monotypic Neolindleya...
