Crop protection entomology became the name for ESA Section F in 1964. It was preceded in 1961 by Chemical Control and in 1953 by Chemical Control Investigations when Section F was first recognized in the organizational structure of the society. Nevertheless, it was the substance of Section F that begat the Association of Official Economic Entomologists in 1889, the original constitution for which limited membership to economic entomologists. This fledgling society was born into the era of kerosene-soap emulsions, Paris green, carbon bisulfide, and hydrogen cyanide.

A method of volatilizing carbon bisulfide with steam was successfully employed in soil fumigation tests for the control of the greenhouse centipede ( Scutigerella immaculata Newp.) infesting ground beds in a commercial greenhouse at Indianapolis, Indiana. The carbon bisulfide was placed in a steel drum and steam under 50 pounds pressure allowed to pass through, volatilizing the material and forcing the gases into underground tiles, extending the length of the bed at a depth of about 16 inches. A high mortality of centipedes and other soil-infesting forms was secured.
