Radio mini-haloes are poorly-understood, moderately-extended diffuse radio sources that trace the presence of magnetic fields and relativistic electrons on scales of hundreds of kiloparsecs, predominantly in relaxed clusters. With relatively few confirmed detections to-date, many questions remain unanswered. This paper presents new radio observations of the galaxy cluster MS1455.0$+$2232 performed with MeerKAT (covering the frequency range 872$-$1712 MHz) and LOFAR (covering 120$-$168 MHz), the first results from a homogeneously selected mini-halo census. We find that this mini-halo extends for $\sim590$ kpc at 1283 MHz, significantly larger than previously believed, and has a flatter spectral index ($\alpha = -0.97 \pm 0.05$) than typically expected. Our X-ray analysis clearly reveals a large-scale (254 kpc) sloshing spiral in the intracluster medium. We perform a point-to-point analysis, finding a tight single correlation between radio and X-ray surface brightness with a super-linear slope of $b_{\rm 1283~MHz} = 1.16^{+0.06}_{-0.07}$ and $b_{\rm 145~MHz} = 1.15^{+0.09}_{-0.08}$; this indicates a strong link between the thermal and non-thermal components of the intracluster medium. Conversely, in the spectral index/X-ray surface brightness plane, we find that regions inside and outside the sloshing spiral follow different correlations. We find compelling evidence for multiple sub-components in this mini-halo for the first time. While both the turbulent (re-)acceleration and hadronic scenarios are able to explain some observed properties of the mini-halo in MS1455.0$+$2232, neither scenario is able to account for all the evidence presented by our analysis., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Giant radio relics are arc-like structures of diffuse, non-thermal synchrotron radiation that trace shock waves induced by galaxy cluster mergers. The particle (re-)acceleration mechanism producing such radio relics is unclear. One major open question is whether relics can be formed directly from a population of thermal seed electrons, or if pre-existing relativistic seed electrons are required. In some cases AGN can provide such a population of sub-GeV electrons. However, it is unclear how common this connection is. In this paper we present LOFAR 140 MHz and VLA L-band radio observations, as well as Chandra data of PSZ2 G096.88+24.18, a merging galaxy cluster system hosting a pair of radio relics. A large patch of diffuse emission connects a bright radio galaxy with one of the relics, likely affecting the properties of the relic. We find that the most plausible explanation for the connection is that the merger shock wave has passed over an AGN lobe. We present new 144-MHz LOFAR observations of the prototypical `X-shaped' radio galaxy NGC 326, which show that the formerly known wings of the radio lobes extend smoothly into a large-scale, complex radio structure. We argue that this structure is most likely the result of hydrodynamical effects in an ongoing group or cluster merger, for which pre-existing X-ray and optical data provide independent evidence. The large-scale radio structure is hard to explain purely in terms of jet reorientation due to the merger of binary black holes, a previously proposed explanation for the inner structure of NGC 326. For this reason, we suggest that the simplest model is one in which the merger-related hydrodynamical processes account for all the source structure, though we do not rule out the possibility that a black hole merger has occurred. Inference of the black hole-black hole merger rate from observations of X-shaped sources should be carried out with caution in the absence of deep, sensitive low-frequency observations. Some X-shaped sources may be signposts of cluster merger activity, and it would be useful to investigate the environments of these objects more generally., Comment: 7 pages, 2 colour figures. Diffuse synchrotron radio emission from cosmic ray electrons is observed at the centre of a number of galaxy clusters. These sources can be classified either as giant radio haloes, which occur in merging clusters, or as mini haloes, which are found only in cool-core clusters. In this paper, we present the first discovery of a cool-core cluster with an associated mini halo that also shows ultra-steep-spectrum emission extending well beyond the core that resembles radio halo emission. The large-scale component is discovered thanks to LOFAR observations at 144 MHz. We also analyse GMRT observations at 610 MHz to characterize the spectrum of the radio emission. An X-ray analysis reveals that the cluster is slightly disturbed, and we suggest that the steep-spectrum radio emission outside the core could be produced by a minor merger that powers electron re-acceleration without disrupting the cool core. This discovery suggests that, under particular circumstances, both a mini halo and giant halo could co-exist in a single cluster, opening new perspectives for particle acceleration mechanisms in galaxy clusters.

We have conducted a mini-survey for low-frequency radio emission from some of the closest brown dwarfs to the Sun with rapid rotation rates: SIMP J013656.5+093347, WISEPC J150649.97+702736.0, and WISEPA J174124.26+255319.5. We have placed robust 3-sigma upper limits on the flux density in the 111 - 169 MHz frequency range for these targets: WISE 1506: < 0.72 mJy; WISE 1741: < 0.87 mJy; SIMP 0136: < 0.66 mJy. At 8 hours of integration per target to achieve these limits, we find that systematic and detailed study of this class of object at LOFAR frequencies will require a substantial dedication of resources., 9 pages. We present the first wide area (19 deg$^2$), deep ($\approx120-150$ {\mu}Jy beam$^{-1}$), high resolution ($5.6 \times 7.4$ arcsec) LOFAR High Band Antenna image of the Bo\"otes field made at 130-169 MHz. This image is at least an order of magnitude deeper and 3-5 times higher in angular resolution than previously achieved for this field at low frequencies. The observations and data reduction, which includes full direction-dependent calibration, are described here. We present a radio source catalogue containing 6276 sources detected over an area of $19$\,deg$^2$, with a peak flux density threshold of $5\sigma$. As the first thorough test of the facet calibration strategy, introduced by van Weeren et al., we investigate the flux and positional accuracy of the catalogue. We present differential source counts that reach an order of magnitude deeper in flux density than previously achieved at these low frequencies, and show flattening at 150 MHz flux densities below 10 mJy associated with the rise of the low flux density star-forming galaxies and radio-quiet AGN., Comment: 29 pages, 27 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The cluster 1RXS J0603.3+4214 is a merging galaxy cluster that hosts three radio relics and a giant radio halo. The northern relic, the Toothbrush, is 1.9-Mpc long and has an unusual linear morphology. According to simple diffusive shock acceleration theory, its radio spectral index indicates a Mach number of 3.3-4.6. Here, we present results from a deep XMM-Newton observation of the cluster. We observe two distinct cluster cores that have survived the merger. The presence of three shocks at or near the locations of the radio relics is confirmed by density and temperature discontinuities. However, the observation poses several puzzles that challenge our understanding of radio relics: (i) at the Toothbrush, the shock Mach number is not larger than 2, in apparent conflict with the shock strength predicted from the radio spectrum; (ii) at the Toothbrush, the shock front is, in part, spatially offset from the radio emission; (iii) at the eastern relic, we detect a temperature jump corresponding to a Mach number of approximately 2.5, but there is no associated surface brightness discontinuity. We studied the intracluster medium of the galaxy cluster CIZA J2242.8+5301 using deep XMM-Newton observations. The cluster hosts a remarkable 2-Mpc long, ~50-kpc wide radio relic that has been nicknamed the "Sausage". A smaller, more irregular counter-relic is also present, along with a faint giant radio halo. We analysed the distribution of the ICM physical properties, and searched for shocks by trying to identify density and temperature discontinuities. East of the southern relic, we find evidence of shock compression corresponding to a Mach number of 1.3, and speculate that the shock extends beyond the length of the radio structure. The ICM temperature increases at the northern relic. More puzzling, we find a "wall" of hot gas east of the cluster centre. A partial elliptical ring of hot plasma appears to be present around the merger. We have performed 323 MHz observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope of the most promising candidates selected from the MACS catalog. The aim of the work is to extend our knowledge of the radio halo and relic populations to z>0.3, the epoch in which massive clusters formed. In MACSJ1149.5+2223 and MACSJ1752.1+4440, we discovered two double-relic systems with a radio halo, and in MACSJ0553.4-3342 we found a radio halo. Archival Very Large Array observations and Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope observations have been used to study the polarization and spectral index properties. The radio halo in MACSJ1149.5+2223 has the steepest spectrum ever found so far in these objects (alpha > 2). The double relics in MACSJ1149.5+2223 are peculiar in their position that is misaligned with the main merger axis. The relics are polarized up to 30% and 40% in MACSJ1149.5+2223 and MACSJ1752.040+44, respectively. In both cases, the magnetic field is roughly aligned with the relics' main axes. The spectra in the relics in MACSJ1752.040+44 steepen towards the cluster centre, in agreement with model expectations. X-ray data on MACSJ0553.4-3342 suggests that this cluster is undergoing a major merger, with the merger axis close to the plane of the sky. The cores of the disrupted clusters have just passed each other, but no radio relic is detected in this system. If turbulence is responsible for the radio emission, we argue that it must develop before the core passage. A comparison of double relic plus halo system with cosmological simulations allows a simultaneous estimate of the acceleration efficiencies at shocks (to produce relics) and of turbulence (to produce the halo).

The newly discovered galaxy cluster 1RXS J0603.3+4214 hosts a 1.9 Mpc long, bright radio relic with a peculiar linear morphology. Using hydrodynamical N-body adaptive mesh refinement simulations of the merger between three initially hydrostatic clusters in an idealized set-up, we are able to reconstruct the morphology of the radio relic. Based on our simulation, we can constrain the merger geometry, predict lensing mass measurements and X-ray observations. Comparing such models to X-ray, redshift and lensing data will validate the geometry of this complex merger which helps in constraining the parameters for shock acceleration of electrons that produces the radio relic.

We report the discovery of large-scale diffuse radio emission in the galaxy cluster MACS J1752.0+4440 (z = 0.366). Using Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) observations we find that the cluster hosts a double radio relic system as well as a 1.65 Mpc radio halo covering the region between the two relics. The relics are diametrically located on opposite sides of the cluster centre. The NE and SW relics have sizes of 1.3 and 0.9 Mpc, respectively. In the case of an isolated binary merger event, the relative sizes of the relics suggest a mass ratio about 2:1. We measure integrated spectra of −1.16 ± 0.03 for the NE relic and −1.10 ± 0.05 for the SW relic. We conclude that this cluster has undergone a violent binary merger event and the relics are best explained by particles (re)accelerated in outwards travelling shock waves. The spectral indices suggest that the relics trace shock waves with Mach numbers (M) of around 3.5–4.5. These relatively high Mach numbers derived from the radio spectral index are comparable to those derived for a few other recently discovered relics. This implies that merger shocks with M > 3 are relatively common in cluster outskirts if our understanding of diffusive shock acceleration is correct.

In this paper, we address the question of why cluster radio relics that are connected to shock acceleration, so-called radio gischt relics, have preferentially been found in the outskirts of galaxy clusters. By identifying merger shock waves in cosmological grid simulations, we explore several prescriptions for relating the energy dissipated in shocks to the energy emitted in the radio band. None of the investigated models produces detectable radio relics within 100–200 kpc from the cluster centre. All models cause >50 per cent of the detectable relic emission at projected distances >800 kpc. Central radio relics caused by shocks that propagate along the line of sight are rare events for simple geometrical reasons, and they have a low surface brightness making them elusive for current instruments. Our simulations show that the radial distribution of observed relics can be explained by the radial trend of dissipated kinetic energy in shocks, which increases with distance from the cluster centre up until half of the virial radius.

Upcoming radio telescopes will allow to study the radio sky at low frequencies with unprecedent sensitivity and resolution. New surveys are expected to discover a large number of new radio sources. Here we investigate the abundance of radio relics, i.e. steep-spectrum diffuse radio emission coming from the periphery of galaxy clusters, which are believed to trace shock waves induced by cluster mergers. With the advent of comprehensive relic samples a framework is needed to analyze statistically the relic abundance. To this end, we introduce the probability to find a relic located in a galaxy cluster with given mass and redshift allowing us to relate the halo mass function of the Universe with the radio relic number counts. Up to date about 45 relics have been reported and we compile the resulting counts, N(>S_1.4). In principle, the parameters of the distribution could be determined using a sufficiently large relic sample. However, since the number of known relics is still small for that purpose we use the MareNostrum Universe simulation to determine the relic radio power scaling with cluster mass and redshift. Our model is able to reproduce the recently found tentative evidence for an increase in the fraction of clusters hosting relics, both with X-ray luminosity and redshift, using an X-ray flux limited cluster sample. Moreover, we find that a considerable fraction of faint relics (S_1.4 < ~10 mJy) reside in clusters with an X-ray flux below ~3e-12 erg/s/cm^2. Finally, we estimate the number of radio relics which await discovery by future low frequency surveys proposed for LOFAR and WSRT. We estimate that the WODAN survey proposed for WSRT may discover 900 relics and that the LOFAR-Tier 1-120 MHz survey may discover about 2500 relics. However, the actual number of newly discovered relics will crucially depend on the existence of sufficiently complete galaxy cluster catalogues.

Galaxy clusters grow by mergers with other clusters and galaxy groups. These mergers create shock waves within the intracluster medium (ICM) that can accelerate particles to extreme energies. In the presence of magnetic fields, relativistic electrons form large regions emitting synchrotron radiation, so-called radio relics. Behind the shock front, synchrotron and inverse Compton (IC) losses cause the radio spectral index to steepen away from the shock front. An example of such a cluster is CIZA J2242.8+5301, where very clear spectral steepening in the downstream region is observed. Here we present hydrodynamical simulations of idealized binary cluster mergers with the aim of constraining the merger scenario for this cluster. From our simulations, we find that CIZA J2242.8+5301 is probably undergoing a merger in the plane of the sky (less then 10 deg from edge-on) with a mass ratio of about 2:1, and an impact parameter < 400 kpc. We find that the core passage of the clusters happened about 1 Gyr ago. We conclude that double relics relics can set constraints on the mass ratios, impact parameters, timescales, and viewing geometry of binary cluster mergers, which is particularly useful when detailed X-ray observations are not available. In addition, the presence of large radio relics can be used to constrain the degree of clumping in the outskirts of the ICM, which is important to constrain the baryon fraction, density and entropy profiles, around the virial radius and beyond. We find that the amplitude of density fluctuations, with sizes of < 200 kpc, in the relic in CIZA J2242.8+5301 is not larger than 30%. [abridged]

We present a new 400ks Chandra X-ray observation and a GMRT radio observation at 325MHz of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 2146. The Chandra observation reveals detailed structure associated with the major merger event including the Mach M=2.1+/-0.2 bow shock located ahead of the dense subcluster core and the first known example of an upstream shock (M=1.6+/-0.1). Surprisingly, the deep GMRT observation at 325MHz does not detect any extended radio emission associated with either shock front. All other merging galaxy clusters with X-ray detected shock fronts, including the Bullet cluster, Abell 520, Abell 754 and Abell 2744, and clusters with candidate shock fronts have detected radio relics or radio halo edges coincident with the shocks. We consider several possible factors which could affect the formation of radio relics, including the shock strength and the presence of a pre-existing electron population, but do not find a favourable explanation for this result. We calculate a 3sigma upper limit of 13mJy on extended radio emission, which is significantly below the radio power expected by the observed P_{radio}-L_{X} correlation for merging systems. The lack of an extended radio halo in Abell 2146 maybe due to the low cluster mass relative to the majority of merging galaxy clusters with detected radio halos.

We use the Hubble Space Telescope ACS/SBC and Very Large Telescope FORS cameras to observe the Brightest Cluster Galaxies in Abell 2597 and Abell 2204 in the far-ultraviolet (FUV) F150LP and optical U, B, V, R, I Bessel filters. The FUV and U band emission is enhanced in bright, filamentary structures surrounding the BCG nuclei. These filaments can be traced out to 20 kpc from the nuclei in the FUV. Excess FUV and U band light is determined by removing emission due to the underlying old stellar population and mapped with 1 arcsec spatial resolution over the central 20 kpc regions of both galaxies. We find the FUV and U excess emission to be spatially coincident and a stellar interpretation requires the existence of a significant amount of 10000-50000 K stars. Correcting for nebular continuum emission and dust intrinsic to the BCG further increases the FUV to U band emission ratio and implies that stars alone may not suffice to explain the observations. However, lack of detailed information on the gas and dust distribution and extinction law in these systems prevents us from ruling out a purely stellar origin. Non-stellar processes, such as the central AGN, Scattering, Synchrotron and Bremsstrahlung emission are investigated and found to not be able to explain the FUV and U band measurements in A2597. Contributions from non-thermal processes not treated here should be investigated. Comparing the FUV emission to the optical H-alpha line emitting nebula shows good agreement on kpc-scales in both A2597 and A2204. In concordance with an earlier investigation by O'Dea et al. (2004) we find that O-stars can account for the ionising photons necessary to explain the observed H-alpha line emission.

We use XMM–Newton observations of the galaxy cluster MaxBCG J217.95869+13.53470 to analyse its physical properties and dynamical state. MaxBCG J217.95869+13.53470 is found at a redshift of 0.16, has a mass of ∼1 × 1014 M⊙ and a luminosity of 7.9 × 1043 erg s−1. The temperature map shows the presence of hot regions towards the north and west of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). From the entropy distribution, regions of high entropy match the location of the hot regions; more high-entropy regions are found to the west, and ∼165 kpc to the southwest of the central active galactic nucleus. A second X-ray bright galaxy is visible ∼90 kpc to the north-east of the BCG, at a redshift of 0.162. This galaxy is likely to be the BCG of a smaller, infalling galaxy cluster. The mass of the smaller cluster is ∼10 per cent the mass of MaxBCG J217.95869+13.53470, yielding an impact parameter of ∼30–100 kpc. We compare the results of our X-ray observations with Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations of the radio source VLSS J1431.8+1331, located at the centre of the cluster. Two sources are visible in the radio: a central elongated source that bends at its northern and southern ends, and a south-western source that coincides with a region of high entropy. The radio sources are connected by a bridge of faint radio emission. We speculate that the south-western radio source is a radio relic produced by compression of old radio plasma by a merger shock.

We have used the Spectrograph for INtegral Field Observations in the Near-Infrared (SINFONI) integral field spectrograph to map the near-infrared K-band emission lines of molecular and ionized hydrogen in the central regions of two cool core galaxy clusters, Abell 2597 and Sersic 159-03. Gas is detected out to 20 kpc from the nuclei of the brightest cluster galaxies and found to be distributed in clumps and filaments around it. The ionized and molecular gas phases trace each other closely in extent and dynamical state. Both gas phases show signs of interaction with the active nucleus. Within the nuclear regions, the kinetic luminosity of this gas is found to be somewhat smaller than the current radio luminosity. Outside the nuclear region, the gas has a low velocity dispersion and shows smooth velocity gradients. There is no strong correlation between the intensity of the molecular and ionized gas emission and either the radio or the X-ray emission. The molecular gas in Abell 2597 and Sersic 159-03 is well described by a gas in local thermal equilibrium with a single excitation temperature T exc ~2300 K. The emission-line ratios do not vary strongly as a function of position, with the exception of the nuclear regions where the ionized to molecular gas ratio is found to decrease. These constant line ratios imply a single source of heating and excitation for both gas phases.
