Abstract

Background: Persons with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias experience behavioral symptoms that frequently result in nursing home (NH) placement. Managing behavioral symptoms in the NH increases time required to complete care, adds to staff stress and turnover, and increases costs of care. The Changing Talk (CHAT) intervention improves staff communication by reducing elderspeak and led to reduced resident resistiveness to care (RTC). We evaluated the cost effectiveness of CHAT in reducing elderpeak and RTC.

Abstract

Lower incidence rates of cancer for all anatomic sites combined were found in male and female Spanish-surnamed residents of Los Angeles County when compared to other whites. These Mexican-Americans were at lower risk for cancer of the buccal cavity, colon, rectum, larynx, lung, breast, bladder, prostate, and testis, and were at higher risk for cancer of the stomach, gallbladder, liver, and cervix. Immigrant Mexican-Americans had incidence rates most divergent from other whites, whereas indigenous Mexican-Americans had rates between the other two groups. The cancer pattern in Mexican-Americans was generally similar to that in American Indians. These data were most consistent with environmental variations in cause.

Abstract

Eye gnats ( Hippelates pusio Loew) have been considered possible vectors for the bacterium Haemophilus aegyptius , which causes conjunctivitis in children. After exposure to a culture of H. aegyptius , the eye gnat retained viable organisms for a maximum of 10 hr. A severe conjunctivitis was produced in rabbits which had been treated by irradiation with a cobalt-60 source and ultraviolet light, and then inoculated with H. aegyptius . This bacterium was then transmitted by the eye gnat from the eyes of the experimentally infected rabbits to irradiated rabbits, producing infection. Pathologic changes observed in the eyes of rabbits with conjunctivitis were attributed to infection with H. aegyptius . Results of these experiments indicate that eye gnats can act as mechanical vectors of H. aegyptius , with production of conjunctivitis. A conjunctivitis was also produced in irradiated rabbits by inoculation and gnat transmission of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus sp.

Abstract

An increased rate of lung cancer has been consistently observed from 1968-1972 among males in southcentral Los Angeles. This excess risk occurs across several social classes and occupational categories. No differential excess of oral cavity, pancreatic, laryngeal and bladder cancer was observed in the same area, lessening the possibility that regional variations in smoking habits accounted for the excess lung cancer. Air sampling has indicated an excess of certain polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in southcentral Los Angeles. There was a correlation between the geographic distribution of lung cancer cases and the general location of industries which have emitted these PAH. A case-controlled study of smoking, occupational and residential history in the southcentral area is underway.

Abstract

The relationship between occupational prestige, socio-economic status, and psychosis has been previously studied and reported by Clark, (1,2) Nolan, (6) Fuson, (3) Tietze, Lemkau, and Cooper. (8) The findings of the last five authors support the position that rates for schizophrenia are greater in the lower socio-economic groups than in the higher socio-economic groups. Clark, in two separate reports, points out that occupational psychoses rates are patterned in the direction of an inverse relationship between psychoses rates and factors of occupational income and occupational prestige.
