Counts were made in central Iowa of horn flies, Haematobia irritans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae), parasitizing 15 cattle representing 4 breeds. The counts were repeated on the same cattle on 36 days throughout the 1979 fly breeding season. An analysIs of variance was made on the logarithmically transformed data. No real differences in horn fly densities could be assigned to host breed (hence color). Only 3.3% of the total variance in horn fly counts was attributable to the host animals, but 83% of the variance was explained by temporal effects; these are displayed graphically.
