Search

The discovery of two ultraviolet (UV)-bright galaxy candidates at z ∼ 13, HD1 and HD2, laid the foundation for a new race to study the early Universe. Previous investigations suggested that they are powered either by a supermassive black hole or by an extreme, transient burst of star formation. Given their uncertain nature, we investigate whether these sources could be lensed by a hitherto undetected, faint foreground galaxy. We find that at the current limiting magnitude with which HD1 and HD2 were imaged, there is only a $7.39{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ probability they are strongly lensed by spherical deflectors and that the hypothetical lensing galaxy was too faint to be detected. Meanwhile, with the limiting magnitudes of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and JWST, the theoretical probability would drop precipitously to 0.058 and $0.0012{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$, respectively. We further find it unlikely that the luminosities of both sources can be accounted for by lensing that produces a single, resolved image with sufficiently high magnification. Alternatively, in the unlikely event that their brightness results from lensing by an elliptical isothermal galaxy, there is a $30.9 {{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ probability that the lensing galaxy is too faint to be observable at the current limiting magnitude. Future HST (JWST) imaging will drop this probability to $0.245 {{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ ($0.0025 {{\ \rm per\ cent}}$). In summary, while deep imaging with HST and JWST is required to discard the lensing hypothesis entirely, it is unlikely that the exceptional luminosity of the two z ∼ 13 sources can be accounted for by gravitational lensing.

The quest for high-redshift quasars has led to a series of record-breaking sources, with the current record holder at $z=7.642$. Here, we show how future detections of $z>8$ quasars impact the constraints on the parameters for black hole growth and seed models. Using broad flat priors on the growth parameters (Eddington ratio $\,f_{\rm Edd}$, duty cycle ${\cal D}$, seed mass $M_{\rm \bullet, seed}$ and radiative efficiency $\epsilon$), we show that the large uncertainties in their determination decrease by a factor $\sim 5$ when a quasar's detection redshift goes from $z=9$ to $z=12$. In this high-redshift regime, $\epsilon$ tends to the lowest value allowed, and the distribution for $M_{\rm \bullet, seed}$ peaks well inside the heavy seed domain. Remarkably, two quasars detected at $z > 7$ with low accretion rates (J1243+0100 and J0313-1806) already tighten the available parameter space, requiring $M_{\rm \bullet, seed} > 10^{3.5} \,{\rm M_\odot}$ and $\epsilon < 0.1$. The radiative efficiency is a crucial unknown, with factor $\sim 2$ changes able to modify the predicted mass by $\sim 3$ orders of magnitude already at $z\sim 9$. The competing roles of inefficient accretion (decreasing $\epsilon$) and black hole spin-up (increasing $\epsilon$) significantly impact growth models. Finally, we suggest that yields currently predicted by upcoming quasar surveys (e.g., Euclid) will be instrumental for determining the most-likely seed mass regime. For example, assuming thin-disk accretion, a detection of a quasar with $M_\bullet \sim 10^{10} \,{\rm M_\odot}$ by $z\sim 9-10$ would exclude the entire parameter space available for light seeds and dramatically reduce the one for heavy seeds., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Aquatic biospheres reliant on oxygenic photosynthesis are expected to play an important role on Earth-like planets endowed with large-scale oceans insofar as carbon fixation (i.e., biosynthesis of organic compounds) is concerned. We investigate the properties of aquatic biospheres comprising Earth-like biota for habitable rocky planets orbiting Sun-like stars and late-type M-dwarfs such as TRAPPIST-1. In particular, we estimate how these characteristics evolve with the available flux of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and the ambient ocean temperature ($T_W$), the latter of which constitutes a key environmental variable. We show that many salient properties, such as the depth of the photosynthesis zone and the net primary productivity (i.e., the effective rate of carbon fixation), are sensitive to PAR flux and $T_W$ and decline substantially when the former is decreased or the latter is increased. As the sensitivity of gravitational wave (GW) instruments improves and new networks start operating, hundreds of merging stellar-mass black holes (SBHs) and intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) are expected to be observed in the next few years. The origin and distribution of SBH and IMBH binaries in various dynamical environments is a fundamental scientific question in GW astronomy. In this paper, we discuss ways tidal disruption events (TDEs) may provide a unique electromagnetic window into the assembly and merger of binary SBHs and IMBHs in nuclear star clusters (NSCs). We discuss how the host NSC mass and density and the slope of the black-hole mass function set the orbital properties and the masses of the binaries that undergo a TDE. For typical NSC properties, we predict a TDE rate of $\sim 10^{-6}$--$10^{-7}\ {\rm yr}^{-1}$ per galaxy. The lightcurve of TDEs in NSCs could be interrupted and modulated by the companion black hole on the orbital period of the binary. We combine the latest observationally motivated constraints on stellar properties in dark matter haloes, along with data-driven predictions for the atomic (HI) and molecular (H$_2$) gas evolution in galaxies, to derive empirical relationships between the build-up of galactic components and their evolution over cosmic time. At high redshift ($z \gtrsim 4$), the frameworks imply that galaxies acquire their cold gas (both atomic and molecular) mostly by accretion, with the fraction of cold gas reaching about 20% of the cosmic baryon fraction. We infer a strong dependence of the star formation rate on the H$_2$ mass, suggesting a near-universal depletion timescale of 0.1-1 Gyr in Milky Way sized haloes (of masses $10^{12} \ M_{\odot}$ at $z = 0$). There is also evidence for a near-universality of the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation across redshifts, with very little dependence on stellar mass, if a constant conversion factor ($\alpha_{\rm CO}$) of CO luminosity to molecular gas mass is assumed. Combining the atomic and molecular gas observations with the stellar build-up illustrates that galactic mass assembly in Milky-Way sized haloes proceeds from smooth accretion at high redshifts, towards becoming merger-dominated at late times ($z \lesssim 0.6$). We analyze triple systems composed of the super massive black hole (SMBH) near the center of M87 and a pair of black holes (BHs) with masses in the range $10-10^3$ $M_{\odot}$. We consider the post Newtonian precession as well as the Kozai-Lidov interactions at the quadruple and octupole levels in modeling the evolution of binary black hole (BBH) under the influence of the SMBH. Kozai-Lidov oscillations enhance the gravitational wave (GW) signal in some portions of the parameter space. We identify frequency peaks and examine the detectability of GWs with LISA as well as future observatories such as $\mu$Ares and DECIGO. We show examples in which GW signal can be observed with a few or all of these detectors. Multi-Wavelength GW spectroscopy holds the potential to discover stellar to intermediate mass BHs near the center of M87. We estimate the rate, $\Gamma$, of collisions between the BBHs and flyby stars at the center of M87. The Fundamental Plane (FP) of Black Hole (BH) Activity in galactic nuclei relates X-ray and radio luminosities to BH mass and accretion rate. However, there is a large scatter exhibited by the data, which motivated us for a new variable. We add BH spin as a new variable and estimate the spin dependence of the jet power and disk luminosity in terms of radio and X-ray luminosities. We assume the Blandford-Znajek process as the main source of the outflow, and find that the jet power depends on BH spin stronger than quadratically at moderate and large spin values. We perform a statistical analysis for 10 AGNs which have sub-Eddington accretion rates and whose spin values are measured independently via the reflection or continuum-fitting methods, and find that the spin-dependent relation describes the data significantly better. This analysis, if supported with more data, could imply not only the spin dependence of the FP relation, but also the Blandford-Znajek process in AGN jets., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a global very long baseline interferometric array observing at a wavelength of 1.3 mm, detected the first image of the M87 supermassive black hole (SMBH). M87 is a giant elliptical galaxy at the center of Virgo cluster, which is expected to have formed through merging of cluster galaxies. Consequently M87* hosted mergers of black holes through dynamical friction and could have one or multiple binary companions with a low mass ratio at large separations. We show that a long-term monitoring of the M87 SMBH image over $\sim$1 year with absolute positional accuracy of 1$\approx\mu as$ could detect such binary companions and exclude a large parameter space in semi major axis ($a_0$) and mass ratio ($q$), which is currently not constrained. Moreover, the presence of the accretion disk around M87* excludes a binary companion with $a_0\approx$ of order a mili parsec, as otherwise the accretion disk would have been tidally disrupted., Comment: accepted for publication at MNRAS Letters

Mergers of black hole (BH) and neutron star (NS) binaries are expected to be observed by gravitational wave observatories in the coming years. Until now, LIGO has only set an upper limit on this merger rate. BH-NS binaries are expected to merge in isolation, as their formation is suppressed in star clusters by the mass segregation and the strong heating by BHs in the cluster core. Another viable scenario to BH-NS mergers is in triple systems. In this paper, we carry out a systematic statistical study of the dynamical evolution of triples comprised of an inner BH-NS binary by means of high-precision $N$-body simulations, including Post-Newtonian (PN) terms up to 2.5PN order. We start from the main sequence massive stars and model the supernovae (SN) events that lead to the formation of BHs and NSs. We adopt different prescriptions for the natal velocity kicks imparted during the SN processes and illustrate that large kicks lead to more compact and massive triples that merge on shorter timescales. We also show that BH-NS merging in triples have a significant eccentricity in the LIGO band, typically much larger than BH-NS merging in isolated binaries. Finally, we estimate a rate of $\Gamma_\mathrm{BH-NS}\approx 1.0\times 10^{-3}-3.5\times 10^{-2} \ \mathrm{Gpc}^{-3}\ \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, for non-zero velocity kicks, and $\Gamma_\mathrm{BH-NS}=19 \ \mathrm{Gpc}^{-3}\ \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, for no natal kicks. We show that planets around M-dwarfs with $M_\star \lesssim 0.2 M_\odot$ may not receive enough photons in the photosynthetically active range of $400$-$750$ nm to sustain Earth-like biospheres. As a result of the lower biological productivity, it is likely that biotic molecular oxygen would not build up to detectable levels in the atmospheres of habitable planets orbiting low-mass stars, consistent with prior work by Lehmer et al. (2018). We examine the case of a random isotropic velocity field, in which one of the velocity components (the "radial" component, with magnitude $v_z$) can be measured easily, while measurement of the velocity perpendicular to this component (the "transverse" component, with magnitude $v_T$) is more difficult and requires long-time monitoring. Particularly important examples are the motion of galaxies at cosmological distances and the interpretation of Gaia data on the proper motion of stars in globular clusters and dwarf galaxies. We address two questions: what is the probability distribution of $v_T$ for a given $v_z$, and for what choice of $v_z$ is the expected value of $v_T$ maximized? We show that, for a given $v_z$, the probability that $v_T$ exceeds some value $v_0$ is $p(v_T \ge v_0 | v_z) = {p_z(\sqrt{v_0^2 + v_z^2}})/{p_z(v_z)}$, where $p_z(v_z)$ is the probability distribution of $v_z$. The expected value of $v_T$ is maximized by choosing $v_z$ as large as possible whenever $\ln p_z(\sqrt{v_z})$ has a positive second derivative, and by taking $v_z$ as small as possible when this second derivative is negative., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, references and discussion added

Quasars whose broad emission lines show temporal, bulk radial velocity (RV) shifts have been proposed as candidate sub-parsec (sub-pc), binary supermassive black holes (BSBHs). We identified a sample of 16 BSBH candidates based on two-epoch spectroscopy among 52 quasars with significant RV shifts over a few rest-frame years. The candidates showed consistent velocity shifts independently measured from two broad lines (H$\beta$ and H$\alpha$ or Mg${\rm \,II}$) without significant changes in the broad-line profiles. Here in the third paper of the series, we present further third- and fourth-epoch spectroscopy for 12 of the 16 candidates for continued RV tests, spanning $\sim$5--15 yr in the quasars' rest frames. Cross-correlation analysis of the broad H$\beta$ calibrated against [O${\rm\,III}]\,\lambda 5007$ suggests that 5 of the 12 quasars remain valid as BSBH candidates. They show broad H$\beta$ RV curves that are consistent with binary orbital motion without significant changes in the broad line profiles. Their broad H$\alpha$ (or Mg${\rm \,II}$) lines display RV shifts that are either consistent with or smaller than those seen in broad H$\beta$. The RV shifts can be explained by a $\sim$0.05--0.1 pc BSBH with an orbital period of $\sim$40--130 yr, assuming a mass ratio of 0.5--2 and a circular orbit. However, the parameters are not well constrained given the few epochs that sample only a small portion of the hypothesized binary orbital cycle. The apparent occurrence rate of sub-pc BSBHs is $\lesssim$13$\pm$5% among all SDSS quasars, with no significant difference in the subsets with and without single-epoch broad line velocity offsets. Recent Kepler photometry has revealed that about half of white dwarfs (WDs) have periodic, low-level (~ 1e-4 - 1e-3), optical variations. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) ultraviolet spectroscopy has shown that up to about one half of WDs are actively accreting rocky planetary debris, as evidenced by the presence of photospheric metal absorption lines. We have obtained HST ultraviolet spectra of seven WDs that have been monitored for periodic variations, to test the hypothesis that these two phenomena are causally connected, i.e. that the optical periodic modulation is caused by WD rotation coupled with an inhomogeneous surface distribution of accreted metals. We detect photospheric metals in four out of the seven WDs. However, we find no significant correspondence between the existence of optical periodic variability and the detection of photospheric ultraviolet absorption lines. Thus the null hypothesis stands, that the two phenomena are not directly related. Some other source of WD surface inhomogeneity, perhaps related to magnetic field strength, combined with the WD rotation, or alternatively effects due to close binary companions, may be behind the observed optical modulation. We report the marginal detection of molecular hydrogen in WD J1949+4734, only the fourth known WD with detected H_2 lines. Detection of the epoch of reionization H i signal requires a precise understanding of the intervening galaxies and AGN, both for instrumental calibration and foreground removal. We present a catalogue of 7394 extragalactic sources at 182 MHz detected in the RA = 0 field of the Murchison Widefield Array Epoch of Reionization observation programme. Motivated by unprecedented requirements for precision and reliability we develop new methods for source finding and selection. We apply machine learning methods to self-consistently classify the relative reliability of 9490 source candidates. A subset of 7466 are selected based on reliability class and signal-to-noise ratio criteria. These are statistically cross-matched to four other radio surveys using both position and flux density information. We find 7369 sources to have confident matches, including 90 partially resolved sources that split into a total of 192 sub-components. An additional 25 unmatched sources are included as new radio detections. The catalogue sources have a median spectral index of −0.85. Spectral flattening is seen towards lower frequencies with a median of −0.71 predicted at 182 MHz. The astrometric error is 7 arcsec compared to a 2.3 arcmin beam FWHM. The resulting catalogue covers ∼1400 deg² and is complete to approximately 80 mJy within half beam power. Throughout the epoch of reionization the most luminous Ly{\alpha} emitters are capable of ionizing their own local bubbles. The CR7 galaxy at $z \approx 6.6$ stands out for its combination of exceptionally bright Ly{\alpha} and HeII 1640 Angstrom line emission but absence of metal lines. As a result CR7 may be the first viable candidate host of a young primordial starburst or direct collapse black hole. High-resolution spectroscopy reveals a +160 km s$^{-1}$ velocity offset between the Ly{\alpha} and HeII line peaks while the spatial extent of the Ly{\alpha} emitting region is $\sim 16$ kpc. The observables are indicative of an outflow signature produced by a strong central source. We present one-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamics simulations incorporating accurate Ly{\alpha} feedback and ionizing radiation to investigate the nature of the CR7 source. We find that a Population III star cluster with $10^5$ K blackbody emission ionizes its environment too efficiently to generate a significant velocity offset. However, a massive black hole with a nonthermal Compton-thick spectrum is able to reproduce the Ly{\alpha} signatures as a result of higher photon trapping and longer potential lifetime. Recent observations have revealed the existence of an abundant population of faint, low surface brightness (SB) galaxies, which appear to be numerous and ubiquitous in nearby galaxy clusters, including the Virgo, Coma and Fornax clusters. With median stellar masses of dwarf galaxies, these ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) have unexpectedly large sizes, corresponding to a mean SB of $24\lesssim\langle\mu_e\rangle_r\ {\rm mag}^{-1} {\rm arcsec}^2\lesssim27$ within the effective radius. We show that the UDG population represents the tail of galaxies formed in dwarf-sized haloes with higher-than-average angular momentum. By adopting the standard model of disk formation -- in which the size of galaxies is set by the spin of the halo -- we recover both the abundance of UDGs as a function of the host cluster mass and the distribution of sizes within the UDG population. According to this model, UDGs are not failed $L_*$ galaxies, but genuine dwarfs, and their low SB is not uniquely connected to the harsh cluster environment. We study a novel electromagnetic signature of supermassive black hole binaries whose inspiral starts being dominated by gravitational wave (GW) emission. Recent simulations suggest that the binary's member BHs can continue to accrete gas from the circumbinary accretion disk in this phase of the binary's evolution, all the way until coalescence. If one of the binary members produces a radio jet as a result of accretion, the jet precesses along a biconical surface due to the binary's orbital motion. When the binary enters the GW phase of its evolution, the opening angle widens, the jet exhibits milliarcsecond scale wiggles, and the conical surface of jet precession is twisted due to apparant superluminal motion. The rapidly increasing orbital velocity of the binary gives the jet an appearance of a "chirp." This helical chirping morphology of the jet can be used to infer the binary parameters. Shocks around clusters of galaxies accelerate electrons which upscatter the Cosmic Microwave Background photons to higher-energies. We use an analytical model to calculate this inverse Compton (IC) emission, taking into account the effects of additional energy losses via synchrotron and Coulomb scattering. We find that the surface brightness of the optical IC emission increases with redshift and halo mass. The IC emission surface brightness, 32--34~mag~arcsec$^{-2}$, for massive clusters is potentially detectable by the newly developed Dragonfly Telephoto Array., 11 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We show that a bursty model of high redshift star formation explains several puzzling observations of the high redshift galaxy population. We begin by pointing out that the observed specific star formation rate requires a duty-cycle of ~10%, which is much lower than found in many hydro-dynamical simulations. This value follows directly from the fact that the observed star formation rate in galaxies integrated over a Hubble time exceeds the observed stellar mass by an order of magnitude. We use the large observed specific star formation rate to calibrate the efficiency of feedback in a model for the high redshift star formation rate which includes merger driven star formation regulated by SNe feedback. This model reproduces the star formation rate density function and the stellar mass function of galaxies at 4, Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. Current surveys are underway to utilize gravitational lensing by galaxy clusters with Einstein radii >35" in the search for the highest redshift galaxies. Associated supernova from the epoch of reionization would have their fluxes boosted above the detection threshold, extending their duration of visibility. When a binary star system is tidally disrupted by a supermassive black hole at a galactic nucleus, one star is ejected at a high speed while the other remains in a tightly bound orbit around the black hole. The cluster of tightly bound stars builds over time, eventually creating a steady state in which the rate of collisions between these stars is similar to the rate of capturing new stars. A large fraction of the collisions occur near the periapsis of the orbits around the black hole, where the kinetic energies are sufficient to generate an explosive disruption of the two stars involved. The typical flare brightens for several days, with a peak luminosity that is comparable to the lower luminosity end of known supernovae. The explosion light curve is followed by a longer flare due to accretion of ejected matter on to the black hole. Dedicated searches in the near universe could observe several such ‘collisional supernovae’ per year.

Motivated by recent observations of the star formation rate density function out to z~7, we describe a simple model for the star formation rate density function at high redshift based on the extended Press-Schechter formalism. This model postulates a starburst following each major merger, lasting for a time t_SF and converting at most f_star of galactic gas into stars. We include a simple physical prescription for supernovae feedback that suppresses star formation in low mass galaxies. Constraining t_SF and f_star to describe the observed star formation rate density at high redshifts, we find that individual starbursts were terminated after a time t_SF~10^7 years. This is comparable to the main-sequence lifetimes of supernova progenitors, indicating that high redshift starbursts are quenched once supernovae feedback had time to develop. High redshift galaxies convert ~10% of their mass into stars for galaxies with star formation rates above ~1 solar mass per year, but a smaller fraction for lower luminosity galaxies. Our best fit model successfully predicts the observed relation between star formation rate and stellar mass at z>~4, while our deduced relation between stellar mass and halo mass is also consistent with data on the dwarf satellites of the Milky Way. We find that supernovae feedback lowers the efficiency of star formation in the lowest mass galaxies and makes their contribution to reionization small. As a result, photo-ionization feedback on low mass galaxy formation does not significantly affect the reionization history. Using a semi-analytic model for the reionization history, we infer that approximately half of the ionizing photons needed to complete reionization have already been observed in star-forming galaxies., 16 pages, 10 figures. Many astrophysical binaries, from planets to black holes, exert strong torques on their circumbinary accretion disks, and are expected to significantly modify the disk structure. Despite the several decade long history of the subject, the joint evolution of the binary + disk system has not been modeled with self-consistent assumptions for arbitrary mass ratios and accretion rates. Here we solve the coupled binary-disk evolution equations analytically in the strongly perturbed limit, treating the azimuthallyaveraged angular momentum exchange between the disk and the binary and the modifications to the density, scale-height, and viscosity self-consistently, including viscous and tidal heating, diffusion limited cooling, radiation pressure, and the orbital decay of the binary. We find a solution with a central cavity and a migration rate similar to those previously obtained for Type-II migration, applicable for large masses and binary separations, and near-equal mass ratios. However, we identify a distinct new regime, applicable at smaller separations and masses, and mass ratio in the range 10 −3 . q . 0.1. For these systems, gas piles up outside the binary’s orbit, but rather than creating a cavity, it continuously overflows as in a porous dam. The disk profile is intermediate between a weakly perturbed disk (producing Type-I migration) and a disk with a gap (with Type-II migration). However, the migration rate of the secondary is typically slower than both Type-I and Type-II rates. We term this new regime “Type-1.5” migration.

We study the interaction of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) binary and a standard radiatively efficient thin accretion disk. We examine steady-state configurations of the disk and migrating SMBH system, self-consistently accounting for tidal and viscous torques and heating, radiative diffusion limited cooling, gas and radiation pressure, and the decay of the binary’s orbit. We obtain a “phase diagram” of the system as a function of binary parameters, showing regimes in which both the disk structure and migration have a different character. Although massive binaries can create a central gap in the disk at large radii, the tidal barrier of the secondary causes a significant pile– up of gas outside of its orbit, which can lead to the closing of the gap. We find that this spillover occurs at an orbital separation as large as � 200M −1/2 7 gravitational radii, where M• = 10 7 M7 M⊙ is the total binary mass. If the secondary is less massive than � 10 6 M⊙, then the gap is closed before gravitational waves (GWs) start dominating the orbital decay. In this regime, the disk is still strongly perturbed, but the piled-up gas continuously overflows as in a porous dam, and crosses inside the secondary’s orbit. The corresponding migration rate, which we label Type 1.5, is slower than the usual limiting cases known as Type I and II migration. Compared to an unperturbed disk, the steady-state disk in the overflowing regime is up to several hundred times brighter in the optical bands. Surveys such as PanSTARRS or LSST may discover the periodic variability of this population of binaries. Our results imply that the circumbinary disks around SMBHs can extend to small radii during the last stages of their merger, when they are detectable by LISA, and may produce coincident electromagnetic (EM) emission similar to active galactic nuclei (AGN).

The galaxy CXOC J100043.1+020637, also known as CID-42, is a highly unusual object. An apparent galaxy merger remnant, it displays signatures of both an inspiraling, kiloparsec-scale active galactic nucleus (AGN) pair and of a recoiling AGN with a kick velocity > 1300 km s^-1. Among recoiling AGN candidates, CID-42 alone has both spatial offsets (in optical and X-ray bands) and spectroscopic offsets. In order to constrain the relative likelihood of both scenarios, we develop models using hydrodynamic galaxy merger simulations coupled with radiative transfer calculations. Our gas-rich, major merger models are generally well matched to the galactic morphology and to the inferred stellar mass and star formation rate. We show that a recoiling supermassive black hole (SMBH) in CID-42 should be observable as an AGN at the time of observation. However, in order for the recoiling AGN to produce narrow-line emission, it must be observed shortly after the kick while it still inhabits a dense gaseous region, implying a large total kick velocity (v_k > 2000 km s^-1). For the dual AGN scenario, an unusually large broad-line offset is required, and the best match to the observed morphology requires a galaxy that is less luminous than CID-42. Further, the lack of X-ray emission from one of the two optical nuclei is not easily attributed to an intrinsically quiescent SMBH or to a Compton-thick galactic environment. While the current data do not allow either the recoiling or the dual AGN scenario for CID-42 to be excluded, our models highlight the most relevant parameters for distinguishing these possibilities with future observations. In particular, high-quality, spatially-resolved spectra that can pinpoint the origin of the broad and narrow line features will be critical for determining the nature of this unique source., 10 pages, 4 figures. We identify a physical mechanism that would have resulted in rapid, obscured growth of seed super-massive black-holes in galaxies at z>6. Specifically, we find that the density at the centre of typical high redshift galaxies was at a level where the Bondi accretion rate implies a diffusion speed of photons that was slower than the gravitational infall velocity, resulting in photons being trapped within the accretion flow and advected into the black-hole. We show that there is a range of black-hole masses (M_bh ~ 10^3-10^5 solar masses) where the accretion flow traps radiation, corresponding to black-holes that were massive enough to generate a photon trapping accretion flow, but small enough that their Bondi radii did not exceed the isothermal scale height of self-gravitating gas. Under these conditions we find that the accretion reaches levels far in excess of the Eddington rate. A prediction of this scenario is that X-ray number counts of active galactic nuclei at z>6 would exhibit a cutoff at the low luminosities corresponding to black-hole masses below ~10^5 solar masses. At low redshifts we find photon trapping to be unimportant because it could only occur in rare low spin halos, and would require black-hole masses in excess of expectations from the observed black-hole - halo mass relation. The super-Eddington growth of ~10^5 solar mass seed black-holes at high redshift may have provided a natural acceleration towards the growth of super-massive black-holes at z~6-7, less than a billion years after the Big Bang.

We examine the possibility that very massive stars greatly exceeding the commonly adopted stellar mass limit of 150 Msun may be present in young star clusters in the local universe. We identify ten candidate clusters, some of which may host stars with masses up to 600 Msun formed via runaway collisions. We estimate the probabilities of these very massive stars being in eclipsing binaries to be >30%. Although most of these systems cannot be resolved at present, their transits can be detected at distances of 3 Mpc even under the contamination of the background cluster light, due to the large associated luminosities ~10^7 Lsun and mean transit depths of ~10^6 Lsun. Discovery of very massive eclipsing binaries would flag possible progenitors of pair-instability supernovae and intermediate-mass black holes.

We present N-body simulations of a new class of self-interacting dark matter models, which do not violate any astrophysical constraints due to a non-power-law velocity dependence of the transfer cross section which is motivated by a Yukawa-like new gauge boson interaction. Specifically, we focus on the formation of a Milky Way-like dark matter halo taken from the Aquarius project and re-simulate it for a couple of representative cases in the allowed parameter space of this new model. We find that for these cases, the main halo only develops a small core (~1 kpc) followed by a density profile identical to that of the standard cold dark matter scenario outside of that radius. Neither the subhalo mass function nor the radial number density of subhaloes are altered in these models but there is a significant change in the inner density structure of subhaloes resulting in the formation of a large density core. As a consequence, the inner circular velocity profiles of the most massive subhaloes differ significantly from the cold dark matter predictions and we demonstrate that they are compatible with the observational data of the brightest Milky Way dSphs in such a velocity-dependent self-interacting dark matter scenario. Specifically, and contrary to the cold dark matter case, there are no subhaloes that are more concentrated than what is inferred from the kinematics of the Milky Way dSphs. We conclude that these models offer an interesting alternative to the cold dark matter model that can reduce the recently reported tension between the brightest Milky Way satellites and the dense subhaloes found in cold dark matter simulations.

Stars with helium cores between ~64 and 133 M_sun are theoretically predicted to die as pair-instability supernovae. This requires very massive progenitors, which are theoretically prohibited for Pop II/I stars within the Galactic stellar mass limit due to mass loss via line-driven winds. However, the runaway collision of stars in a dense, young star cluster could create a merged star with sufficient mass to end its life as a pair-instability supernova, even with enhanced mass loss at non-zero metallicity. We show that the predicted rate from this mechanism is consistent with the inferred volumetric rate of roughly ~2x10^-9 Mpc^-3 yr^-1 of the two observed pair-instability supernovae, SN 2007bi and PTF 10nmn, neither of which have metal-free host galaxies. The disruption of a binary star system by the massive black hole at the Galactic Centre, SgrA*, can lead to the capture of one star around SgrA* and the ejection of its companion as a hypervelocity star (HVS). We consider the possibility that these stars may have planets and study the dynamics of these planets. Using a direct $N$-body integration code, we simulated a large number of different binary orbits around SgrA*. For some orbital parameters, a planet is ejected at a high speed. In other instances, a HVS is ejected with one or more planets orbiting around it. In these cases, it may be possible to observe the planet as it transits the face of the star. A planet may also collide with its host star. In such cases the atmosphere of the star will be enriched with metals. In other cases, a planet is tidally disrupted by SgrA*, leading to a bright flare.

We analyze stellar tidal disruption events as a possible observational signature of gravitational wave induced recoil of supermassive black holes. As a black hole wanders through its galaxy, it will tidally disrupt bound and unbound stars at rates potentially observable by upcoming optical transient surveys. To quantify these rates, we explore a broad range of host galaxy and black hole kick parameters. We find that emission from a transient accretion disk can produce ~1 event per year which LSST would identify as spatially offset, while super-Eddington tidal flares, if they exist, are likely to produce ~10 spatially offset events per year. A majority of tidal disruption flares, and a large majority of flares with an observable spatial offset, are due to bound rather than unbound stars. The total number of disruption events due to recoiled black holes could be almost 1% of the total stellar tidal disruption rate.

We examine the formation of groups of multiple supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in gas-poor galactic nuclei due to the high merger rate of galaxies at high redshifts. We calculate the relative likelihood of binary, triple, and quadruple SMBH systems, by considering the timescales for relevant processes and combining merger trees with N-body simulations for the dynamics of stars and SMBHs in galactic nuclei. Typical haloes today with mass $M_0\approx 10^{14}$ M$_\odot$ have an average mass $M_{z=6}=5\times 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$ at $z\sim 6$, while rare haloes with current mass $M_0\gtrsim 10^{15}$ M$_\odot$ have an average mass $M_{z=6}=5\times 10^{12}$ M$_\odot$ at that redshift. These cluster-size haloes are expected to host single galaxies at $z\sim 6$. We expect about 30% galaxies within haloes with present-day mass $M_0\approx 10^{14}$ M$_\odot$ to contain more than two SMBHs at redshifts $2\lesssim z\lesssim 6$. For larger present-day haloes, with $M_0\gtrsim 10^{15}$ M$_\odot$, this fraction is almost 60%. The existence of multiple SMBHs at high redshifts can potentially explain the mass deficiencies observed in the cores of massive elliptical galaxies, which are up to 5 times the mass of their central BHs. Multiple SMBHs would also lead to an enhanced rate of tidal disruption of stars, modified gravitational wave signals compared to isolated BH binaries, and slingshot ejection of SMBHs from galaxies at high speeds in excess of 2000 km s$^{-1}$.

During the formation of the Milky Way, ≳100 central black holes (BHs) may have been ejected from their small host galaxies as a result of asymmetric gravitational wave emission. We previously showed that many of these BHs are surrounded by a compact cluster of stars that remained bound to the BH during the ejection process. In this paper, we perform long-term N-body simulations of these star clusters to determine the distribution of stars in these clusters today. These numerical simulations, reconciled with our Fokker–Planck simulations, show that the stellar density profile follows a power law with slope ≈−2.15, and show that large-angle scattering and tidal disruptions remove 20–90 per cent of the stars by ∼1010 yr. We then analyse the photometric and spectroscopic properties of recoiled clusters accounting for the small number of stars in the clusters. We use our results to perform a systematic search for candidates in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find no spectroscopic candidates, in agreement with our expectations from the completeness of the survey. Using generic photometric models of present-day clusters, we identify ∼100 recoiling cluster candidates. Follow-up spectroscopy would be able to determine the nature of these candidates.

Recent observations indicate that many if not all galaxies host massive central black holes (BHs). In this paper we explore the influence of supermassive binary black holes (SMBBHs) on their actions as gravitational lenses. When lenses are modelled as singular isothermal ellipsoids, binary black holes change the critical curves and caustics differently as a function of distance. Each black hole can in principle create at least one additional image, which, if observed, provides evidence of black holes. By studying how SMBBHs affect the cumulative distribution of magnification for images created by black holes, we find that the cross section for at least one such additional image to have a magnification larger than $10^{-5}$ is comparable to the cross section for producing multiple-images in singular isothermal lenses. Such additional images may be detectable with high-resolution and large dynamic range maps of multiply-imaged systems from future facilities, such as the SKA. The probability of detecting at least one image (two images) with magnification above $10^{-3}$ is $\sim 0.2 \fBH$ ($\sim 0.05 \fBH$) in a multiply-imaged lens system, where $\fBH$ is the fraction of galaxies housing binary black holes. We also study the effects of SMBBHs on the core images when galaxies have shallower central density profiles (modelled as non-singular isothermal ellipsoids). We find that the cross section of the usually faint core images is further suppressed by SMBBHs. Thus their presence should also be taken into account when one constrains the core radius from the lack of central images in gravitational lenses.

Binaries consisting of a pulsar and a black hole (BH) are a holy grail of astrophysics, both for their significance for stellar evolution and for their potential application as probes of strong gravity. In spite of extensive surveys of our Galaxy and its system of globular clusters, no pulsar-black hole (PSR-BH) binary has been found to date. Clues as to where such systems might exist are therefore highly desirable. We show that if the central parsec around Sgr A* harbors a cluster of ~25,000 stellar BHs (as predicted by mass segregation arguments) and if it is also rich in recycled pulsar binaries (by analogy with globular clusters), then 3-body exchange interactions should produce PSR-BHs in the Galactic center. Simple estimates of the formation rate and survival time of these binaries suggest that a few PSR-BHs should be present in the central parsec today. The proposed formation mechanism makes unique predictions for the PSR-BH properties: 1) the binary would reside within ~1 pc of Sgr A*; 2) the pulsar would be recycled, with a period of ~1 to a few tens of milliseconds, and a low magnetic field B ~3 AU. The potential discovery of a PSR-BH binary therefore provides a strong motivation for deep, high-frequency radio searches for recycled pulsars toward the Galactic center.

Baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAOs) modulate the density ratio of baryons to dark matter across large regions of the Universe. We show that the associated variation in the mass-to-light ratio of galaxies should generate an oscillatory, scale-dependent bias of galaxies relative to the underlying distribution of dark matter. A measurement of this effect would calibrate the dependence of the characteristic mass-to-light ratio of galaxies on the baryon mass fraction in their large-scale environment. This bias, though, is unlikely to significantly affect measurements of BAO peak positions.

The breakout of a supernova shock wave through the progenitor star's outer envelope is expected to appear as an X-ray flash. However, if the supernova explodes inside an optically-thick wind, the breakout flash is delayed. We present a simple model for estimating the conditions at shock breakout in a wind based on the general observable quantities in the X-ray flash lightcurve: the total energy E_X, and the diffusion time after the peak, t_diff. We base the derivation on the self-similar solution for the forward-reverse shock structure expected for an ejecta plowing through a pre-existing wind at large distances from the progenitor's surface. We find simple quantitative relations for the shock radius and velocity at breakout. By relating the ejecta density profile to the pre-explosion structure of the progenitor, the model can also be extended to constrain the combination of explosion energy and ejecta mass. For the observed case of XRO08109/SN2008D, our model provides reasonable constraints on the breakout radius, explosion energy, and ejecta mass, and predicts a high shock velocity which naturally accounts for the observed non-thermal spectrum.

We use data on the high-redshift evolution of the size distribution and luminosity function of galaxies to constrain the relationship between their star formation efficiency and starburst lifetime. Based on the derived scaling relations, we predict the angular sizes and average surface brightnesses of faint galaxies that will be discovered with JWST. We find that JWST will be able to resolve galaxies at the magnitude limit mAB < 31 out to a redshift of z ~ 14. The next generation of large ground-based telescopes will resolve all galaxies discovered with JWST, provided they are sufficiently clumpy to enable detection above the bright thermal sky. We combine our constraints with simple models for self-regulation of star formation, and show that feedback from supernovae at redshifts z ≥ 3 is likely mediated through momentum transfer, with the starburst time-scale set by the lifetime of the massive stars rather than the dynamical time in the host galactic disc. © 2011 The Authors. A precise electromagnetic measurement of the sky coordinates and redshift of a coalescing black hole binary holds the key for using its gravitational wave (GW) signal to constrain cosmological parameters and to test general relativity. Here we show that the merger of ~10^{6-7}M_sun black holes is generically followed over a period of years by multiple electromagnetic flares from tidally disrupted stars. The sudden recoil imparted to the merged black hole by GW emission promptly fills its loss cone and results in a tidal disruption rate of stars as high as ~0.1 per year. The prompt disruption of a star within a single galaxy over a short period provides a unique electromagnetic flag of a recent black hole coalescence event, and sequential disruptions could be used on their own to calibrate the expected rate of GW sources for pulsar timing arrays or the proposed Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).

We estimate the rotation speed of Population III (Pop III) stars within a minihalo at z ~ 20 using a smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulation, beginning from cosmological initial conditions. We follow the evolution of the primordial gas up to densities of 10^12 cm^-3. Representing the growing hydrostatic cores with accreting sink particles, we measure the velocities and angular momenta of all particles that fall onto these protostellar regions. This allows us to record the angular momentum of the sinks and estimate the rotational velocity of the Pop III stars expected to form within them. The rotation rate has important implications for the evolution of the star, the fate encountered at the end of its life, and the potential for triggering a gamma-ray burst (GRB). We find that there is sufficient angular momentum to yield rapidly rotating stars (> 1000 km s^-1, or near break-up speeds). This indicates that Pop III stars likely experienced strong rotational mixing, impacting their structure and nucleosynthetic yields. A subset of them was also likely to result in hypernova explosions, and possibly GRBs.

Gravitational-wave (GW) recoil of merging supermassive black holes (SMBHs) may influence the co-evolution of SMBHs and their host galaxies. We examine this possibility using SPH/N-body simulations of gaseous galaxy mergers in which the merged BH receives a recoil kick. This enables us to follow recoiling BHs in self-consistent, evolving merger remnants. In contrast to recent studies on similar topics, we conduct a large parameter study, generating a suite of over 200 simulations with more than 60 merger models and a range of recoil velocities (vk). Our main results are as follows. (1) BHs kicked at nearly the central escape speed (vesc) may oscillate on large orbits for up to a Hubble time, but in gas-rich mergers, BHs kicked with up to ~ 0.7 vesc may be confined to the central few kpc of the galaxy, owing to gas drag and steep central potentials. (2) vesc in gas-rich mergers may increase rapidly during final coalescence, in which case trajectories may depend on the timing of the BH merger relative to the formation of the potential well. (3) Recoil events generally reduce the lifetimes of bright active galactic nuclei (AGN), but may actually extend AGN lifetimes at lower luminosities. (4) Kinematically-offset AGN (v > 800 km s^-1) may be observable for up to ~ 10 Myr either immediately after the recoil or during pericentric passages through a gas-rich remnant. (5) Spatially-offset AGN (R > 1 kpc) generally have low luminosities and lifetimes of ~ 1 - 100 Myr. (6) Rapidly-recoiling BHs may be up to ~ 5 times less massive than their stationary counterparts. This lowers the normalization of the M-sigma relation and contributes to both intrinsic and overall scatter. (7) Finally, the displacement of AGN feedback after a recoil event enhances central star formation rates, thereby extending the starburst phase of the merger and creating a denser stellar cusp. In this paper, we explore the constraints on the reionization history that are provided by current observations of the Lyman-alpha forest and the CMB. Rather than using a particular semi-analytic model, we take the novel approach of parametrizing the ionizing sources with arbitrary functions, and perform likelihood analyses to constrain possible reionization histories. We find model independent conclusions that reionization is likely to be mostly complete by z=8 and that the IGM was 50% ionized at z=9-10. Upcoming low-frequency observations of the redshifted 21 cm line of neutral hydrogen are expected to place significantly better constraints on the hydrogen neutral fraction at 6

Recent hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation reveal streams of cold (T ~ 1e4 K) gas flowing into the centers of dark matter halos as massive as 1e12-1e13.5 M_sun at redshifts z~1-3. In this paper we show that if > 20% of the gravitational binding energy of the gas is radiated away, then the simulated cold flows are spatially extended Lyman Alpha (Lya) sources with luminosities, Lya line widths, and number densities that are comparable to those of observed Lya blobs. Furthermore, the filamentary structure of the cold flows can explain the wide range of observed Lya blob morphologies. Since the most massive halos form in dense environments, the association of Lya blobs with overdense regions arise naturally. We argue that Lya blobs - even those which are clearly associated with starburst galaxies or quasars - provide direct observational support for the cold accretion mode of galaxies. We discuss various testable predictions of this association.

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) produce a dominant fraction (~80%) of the Soft X-ray background (SXB) at photon energies 0.5, Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Scattering of Lyman Alpha (hereafter Lya) photons by neutral hydrogen gas in a single outflowing 'supershell' around star forming regions often explains the shape and offset of the observed Lya emission line from galaxies. We compute the radiation pressure that is exerted by this scattered Lya radiation on the outflowing material. We show that for reasonable physical parameters, Lya radiation pressure alone can accelerate supershells to velocities in the range v_sh=200-400 km/s. These supershells possibly escape from the gravitational potential well of their host galaxies and contribute to the enrichment of the intergalactic medium. We compute the physical properties of expanding supershells that are likely to be present in a sample of known high-redshift (z=2.7-5.0) galaxies, under the assumption that they are driven predominantly by Lya radiation pressure. We predict ranges of radii r_sh=0.1-10 kpc, ages t_sh=1-100 Myr, and energies E_sh=1e53-1e55 ergs, which are in reasonable agreement with the properties of local galactic supershells. Furthermore, we find that the radius, r_sh, of a Lya-driven supershell of constant mass depends uniquely on the intrinsic Lya luminosity of the galaxy, L_alpha, the HI column density of the supershell, N_HI, and the shell speed, v_sh, through the scaling relation r_sh ~ L_alpha/(N_HI v_sh^2). We derive mass outflow rates in supershells that reach ~10-100% of the star formation rates of their host galaxies.

Recently, a very large clustering length has been measured for quasars at a redshift of z~4. In combination with the observed quasar luminosity function we assess the implications of this clustering for the relationship between quasar luminosity and dark matter halo mass. Our analysis allows for non-linearity and finite scatter in the relation between quasar luminosity and halo mass, as well as a luminosity dependent quasar lifetime. The additional novel ingredient in our modelling is the allowance for an excess in the observed bias over the underlying halo bias owing to the merger driven nature of quasar activity. We find that the observations of clustering and luminosity function can be explained only if both of the following conditions hold: (i) The luminosity to halo mass ratio increases with halo mass; (ii) The observed clustering amplitude is in excess of that expected solely from halo bias. The latter result is statistically significant at the 99% level. Taken together, the observations provide compelling evidence for merger driven quasar activity, with a black-hole growth that is limited by feedback. In difference from previous analyses, we show that there could be scatter in the luminosity halo mass relation of up to 1 dex, and that quasar clustering can not be used to estimate the quasar lifetime., 11 pages, 8 figures. We calculate the density contrast of the Shapley Supercluster (SSC) based on the enhanced abundance of X-ray clusters in it using the extended Press-Schechter formalism. We derive a total SSC mass of M_tot=(4.4+-0.44)x10^{16} M_sun within a sphere of 50 Mpc centered at a distance of about 160 Mpc. The nonlinear fractional density contrast of the sphere is (1+delta)=1.76+-0.17 relative to the mean matter density in the Universe, but the contrast increases in the interior of the SSC. Including the cosmological constant, the SSC region is found to be gravitationally unbound.
