Search

f(T) cosmology has shown promise in explaining aspects of cosmic evolution. In this work, we analyse constraints on leading models of f(T) gravity in the context of the recently released Pantheon+ data set, together with comparisons with previous releases. We also consider other late time data sets including cosmic chronometers and baryonic acoustic oscillation data. Our main result is that we find that the different f(T) models under investigation connect to a variety of Hubble constant, which may help alleviate the cosmic tension on this parameter.

The next generation of cosmological surveys will have unprecedented measurement precision, hence they hold the power to put theoretical ideas to the most stringent tests yet. However, in order to realise the full potential of these measurements, we need to ensure that we apply the most effective analytical tools. We need to identify which cosmological observables are the best cosmological probes. Two commonly used cosmological observables are galaxy redshift number counts and cosmic magnification. Both of these observables have been investigated extensively in cosmological analyses, but only separately. In the light of interacting dark energy (IDE) emerging as a plausible means of alleviating current cosmological tensions, we investigate both observables on large scales in a universe with IDE, using the angular power spectrum: taking into account all known terms, including relativistic corrections, in the observed overdensity. Our results suggest that (given multi-tracer analysis) measuring relativistic effects with cosmic magnification will be relatively better than with galaxy redshift number counts, at all redshifts z. Conversely, without relativistic effects, galaxy redshift number counts will be relatively better in probing the imprint of IDE, at all z. At low z (up to around z = 0.1), relativistic effects enable cosmic magnification to be a relatively better probe of the IDE imprint; while at higher z (up to z < 3), galaxy redshift number counts become the better probe of IDE imprint. Supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are a key catalyst of galaxy formation and evolution, leading to an observed correlation between SMBH mass $M_{\rm BH}$ and host galaxy velocity dispersion $\sigma_{\rm e}$. Outside the local Universe, measurements of $M_{\rm BH}$ are usually only possible for SMBHs in an active state: limiting sample size and introducing selection biases. Gravitational lensing makes it possible to measure the mass of non-active SMBHs. We present models of the $z=0.169$ galaxy-scale strong lens Abell~1201. A cD galaxy in a galaxy cluster, it has sufficient `external shear' that a magnified image of a $z = 0.451$ background galaxy is projected just $\sim 1$ kpc from the galaxy centre. Using multi-band Hubble Space Telescope imaging and the lens modeling software $\texttt{PyAutoLens}$ we reconstruct the distribution of mass along this line of sight. Bayesian model comparison favours a point mass with $M_{\rm BH} = 3.27 \pm 2.12\times10^{10}\,$M$_{\rm \odot}$ (3$\sigma$ confidence limit); an ultramassive black hole. One model gives a comparable Bayesian evidence without a SMBH, however we argue this model is nonphysical given its base assumptions. This model still provides an upper limit of $M_{\rm BH} \leq 5.3 \times 10^{10}\,$M$_{\rm \odot}$, because a SMBH above this mass deforms the lensed image $\sim 1$ kpc from Abell 1201's centre. This builds on previous work using central images to place upper limits on $M_{\rm BH}$, but is the first to also place a lower limit and without a central image being observed. The success of this method suggests that surveys during the next decade could measure thousands more SMBH masses, and any redshift evolution of the $M_{\rm BH}$--$\sigma_{\rm e}$ relation. We analyse the $f(R)$ gravity in the so-called Jordan frame, as implemented to the isotropic Universe dynamics. The goal of the present study is to show that, according to recent data analyses of the supernovae Ia Pantheon sample, it is possible to account for an effective redshift dependence of the Hubble constant. This is achieved via the dynamics of a non-minimally coupled scalar field, as it emerges in the $f(R)$ gravity. We face the question both from an analytical and purely numerical point of view, following the same technical paradigm. We arrive to establish that the expected decay of the Hubble constant with the redshift $z$ is ensured by a form of the scalar field potential, which remains essentially constant for $z\lesssim0.3$, independently if this request is made a priori, as in the analytical approach, or obtained a posteriori, when the numerical procedure is addressed. Gravitational lensing of fast radio bursts (FRBs) offers an exciting avenue for several cosmological applications. However, it is not yet clear how many such events future surveys will detect nor how to optimally find them. We use the known properties of FRBs to forecast detection rates of gravitational lensing on delay time-scales from microseconds to years, corresponding to lens masses spanning 15 orders of magnitude. We highlight the role of the FRB redshift distribution on our ability to observe gravitational lensing. We consider cosmological lensing of FRBs by stars in foreground galaxies and show that strong stellar lensing will dominate on microsecond time-scales. Upcoming surveys such as DSA-2000 and CHORD will constrain the fraction of dark matter in compact objects (e.g. primordial black holes) and may detect millilensing events from intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) or small dark matter halos. Coherent all-sky monitors will be able to detect longer-duration lensing events from massive galaxies, in addition to short time-scale lensing. Finally, we propose a new application of FRB gravitational lensing that will measure directly the circumgalactic medium of intervening galaxies.

The early dark energy (EDE) solution to the Hubble tension comes at the cost of an increased clustering amplitude that has been argued to worsen the fit to galaxy clustering data. We explore whether freeing the total neutrino mass $M_{\nu}$, which can suppress small-scale structure growth, improves EDE's fit to galaxy clustering. Using Planck Cosmic Microwave Background and BOSS galaxy clustering data, a Bayesian analysis shows that freeing $M_{\nu}$ does not appreciably increase the inferred EDE fraction $f_{\rm EDE}$: we find the 95% C.L. upper limits $f_{\rm EDE}, Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. v3: included additional discussions and 3 figures which further strengthen our results and their interpretation, added further references, slight format change. We introduce a modification of the Press-Schechter formalism aimed to derive general mass functions for primordial black holes (PBHs). In this case, we start from primordial power spectra (PPS) which include a monochromatic spike, typical of ultra slow-roll inflation models. We consider the PBH formation as being associated to the amplitude of the spike on top of the linear energy density fluctuations, coming from a PPS with a blue index. By modelling the spike with a log-normal function, we study the properties of the resulting mass function spikes, and compare these to the underlying extended mass distributions. When the spike is at PBH masses which are much lower than the exponential cutoff of the extended distribution, very little mass density is held by the PBHs within the spike, and it is not ideal to apply the Press-Schechter formalism in this case as the resulting characteristic overdensity is too different from the threshold for collapse. It is more appropriate to do so when the spike mass is similar to, or larger than the cutoff mass. Additionally, it can hold a similar mass density as the extended part. Such particular mass functions also contain large numbers of small PBHs, especially if stable PBH relics are considered, and they can provide $\sim 1000M_\odot$ seeds for the supermassive black holes at the centres of present-day galaxies. The constraints on the fraction of dark matter in PBHs for monochromatic mass functions are somewhat relaxed when there is an additional underlying extended distribution of masses., 14 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, refereces added, discussion extended and conclusion unchanged. We consider the unified bulk viscous scenarios and constrain them using the Cosmic Microwave Background observations from Planck 2018 and the Pantheon sample from Type Ia Supernovae. Then we generate the luminosity distance measurements from ${\cal O}(10^3)$ mock Gravitational Wave Standard Sirens (GWSS) events for the proposed Einstein Telescope. We then combine these mock luminosity distance measurements from the GWSS with the current cosmological probes in order to forecast how the mock GWSS data could be effective in constraining these bulk viscous scenarios. Our results show that a non-zero time dependent bulk viscosity in the universe sector is strongly preferred by the current cosmological probes and will possibly be confirmed at many standard deviations by the future GWSS measurements. We further mention that the addition of GWSS data can significantly reduce the uncertainties of the key cosmological parameters obtained from the usual cosmological probes employed in this work., Comment: 11 pages, 3 tables and 4 figures. The next-generation cosmic microwave background (CMB) satellite missions are expected to provide robust constraints on a wide range of cosmological parameters with unprecedented precision. But these constraints on the parameters could weaken if we do not attribute dark energy to a cosmological constant. The cosmological models involving interaction between dark energy and dark matter can give rise to comparable energy densities at the present epoch, thereby alleviating the so-called cosmic coincidence problem. In the present paper, we perform a forecast analysis to test the ability of the future generation high-sensitive CMB, and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) experiments to constrain phenomenological interacting dark energy models. We consider cosmic variance limited future CMB experiment Probe of Inflation and Cosmic Origins (PICO) along with BAO information from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), to constrain the parameters of the interacting dark sector. Based on the stability of the cosmological perturbations, we consider two possibilities for the interaction scenario. We investigate the impact of both coupling constant and equation of state parameter of dark energy on CMB temperature power spectrum, matter power spectrum, and fσ8. We have used simulated temperature and polarization data from PICO within the multipole ranges (ℓ = 2–4000), and as expected, we do see PICO alone produces better constraints than Planck on the ΛCDM parameters. With the integration of PICO and DESI missions, we observe a significant improvement in the constraints on several cosmological parameters, especially the equation of state parameter of dark energy. However, we note that additional data are required to constrain a small positive coupling constant.

The next generation of detectors will detect gravitational waves from binary neutron stars at cosmological distances, for which around a thousand electromagnetic follow-ups may be observed per year. So far, most work devoted to the expected cosmological impact of these standard sirens employed them only as distance indicators. Only recently their use as tracers of clustering, similar to what already proposed for supernovae, has been studied. Focusing on the expected specifications of the Einstein Telescope (ET), we forecast here the performance on cosmological parameters of future standard sirens as both distance and density indicators, with emphasis on the linear perturbation growth index and on spatial curvature. We improve upon previous studies in a number of ways: a more detailed analysis of available telescope time, the inclusion of more cosmological and nuisance parameters, the Alcock-Paczynski correction, the use of sirens also as both velocity and density tracers, and a more accurate estimation of the distance posterior. We find that the analysis of the clustering of sirens improves the constraints on $H_0$ by 30% and on $\Omega_{k0}$ by over an order of magnitude, with respect to their use merely as distance indicators. With 5 years of joint ET and Rubin Observatory follow-ups we could reach precision of 0.1 km/s/Mpc in $H_0$ and 0.02 in $\Omega_{k0}$ using only data in the range $0, Comment: v2: minor clarifications added; matches version to appear in MNRAS

In view of the recent measurement of $H_{0}$ from HST and SH0ES team, we explore the possibility of existence of a negative cosmological constant (AdS vacua in the dark energy sector) in the Universe. In this regard, we consider quintessence fields on top of a negative cosmological constant and compare such construction with $\Lambda$CDM model using a different combination of CMB, SnIa, BAO and $H_{0}$ data. Various model comparison estimators show that quintessence models with a negative $\Lambda$ is either preferred over $\Lambda$CDM or performs equally as $\Lambda$CDM model. Primordial gravitational waves with extremely low frequency are expected to origin from inflation in the early Universe. The detection of such kind of gravitational waves is of great significance to verify the inflationary theory and determine the energy scale of inflation. B-mode of polarization of cosmic microwave background shows to be a promising probe of extremely low frequency primordial gravitational wave. In order to find a complementary observational feature induced by primordial gravitational wave with extremely low frequency, we propose an alternative way of detection by investigating the effect of primordial gravitational wave with extremely low frequency on a gravitational lens system with a non-aligned source-deflector-observer configuration. The results show that, with a series of chosen parameters, gravitational lens system with perturbation from extremely low frequency primordial gravitational wave could induce time delay which could deviate from the time delay deduced from theoretical model as much as about one hundred percent, meaning that gravitational lens system with a non-aligned configuration could serve as a potential long-base-line detector of extremely low frequency primordial gravitational wave., 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Co-varying Physical Couplings (CPC) framework is a modified gravity set up assuming Einstein Field Equations wherein the quantities $\{G,c,\Lambda\}$ are promoted to space-time functions. Bianchi identity and the requirement of stress-energy tensor conservation entangle the possible variations of the couplings $\{G,c,\Lambda\}$, which are forced to co-vary as dictated by the General Constraint (GC). In this paper we explore a cosmological model wherein $G$, $c$ and $\Lambda$ are functions of the redshift respecting the GC of the CPC framework. We assume a linear parametrization of $\Lambda$ in terms of the scale factor $a$. We use the ansatz $\dot{G}/G = \sigma \left( \dot{c}/c \right)$ with $\sigma =$ constant to deduce the functional forms of $c=c(z)$ and $G=G(z)$. We show that this varying-$\{G,c,\Lambda\}$ model fits SNe Ia data and $H(z)$ data with $\sigma = 3$. There is a growing interest in utilizing intrinsic alignment (IA) of galaxy shapes as a geometric and dynamical probe of cosmology. In this paper we present the first measurements of IA in a modified gravity model using the gravitational shear-intrinsic ellipticity correlation (GI) and intrinsic ellipticity-ellipticity correlation (II) functions of dark-matter halos from $f(R)$ gravity simulations. By comparing them with the same statistics measured in $\Lambda$CDM simulations, we find that the IA statistics in different gravity models show distinguishable features, with a trend similar to the case of conventional galaxy clustering statistics. Thus, the GI and II correlations are found to be useful in distinguishing between the $\Lambda$CDM and $f(R)$ gravity models. More quantitatively, IA statistics enhance detectability of the imprint of $f(R)$ gravity on large scale structures by $\sim 40\%$ when combined with the conventional halo clustering in redshift space. We also find that the correlation between the axis ratio and orientation of halos becomes stronger in $f(R)$ gravity than that in $\Lambda$CDM. We consider the potential for line intensity mapping (LIM) of the rotational CO(1-0), CO(2-1) and CO(3-2) transitions to detect deviations from General Relativity from $0 < z < 3$ within the framework of a very general class of modified gravity models, called Horndeski theories. Our forecast assumes a multi-tracer analysis separately obtaining information from the matter power spectrum and the first two multipoles of the redshift space distortion power spectrum. To achieve $\pm 0.1$ level constraints on the slope of the kinetic gravity braiding and Planck mass evolution parameters, a mm-wave LIM experiment would need to accumulate $\approx 10^8-10^9$ spectrometer hours, feasible with instruments that could be deployed in the 2030s. Such a measurement would constrain large portions of the remaining parameter space available to Scalar-Tensor modified gravity theories. The aperiodic variability ubiquitously observed from accreting black hole X-ray binary systems is generally analysed within the framework of the so-called ``theory of propagating fluctuations''. In this paper we derive the Fourier transforms of the Green's function solutions of the thin disc equations. These solutions suffice to describe all possible solutions through standard convolution techniques. Solutions are found for both Newtonian discs and general relativistic solutions with a vanishing ISCO stress. We use this new relativistic theory to highlight the Kerr black hole spin dependence of a number of observable variability properties of black hole discs. The phase lags, coherence, and power density spectra of Kerr discs are shown to be strong functions of black hole spin. Observations of the aperiodic variability of black hole accretion sources may now, at least in principle, offer a new avenue to directly constrain black hole spins., 20 pages, 19 Figures. While the cosmic microwave background (CMB) dipole is largely assumed entirely kinematic, there appears evidence that a part of it is primordial. Such possibility arises in models implying a tilt, interpreted as a dark flow, across the observable Universe. The kinematic nature of the entire CMB dipole can be probed using the dipole of cosmic backgrounds from galaxies after the last scattering. The near-IR cosmic infrared background (CIB) spectral energy distribution leads to an amplified dipole compared to the CMB. The CIB dipole is affected by galaxy clustering, decreasing with fainter, more distant galaxies, and by Solar System emissions and Galactic dust, which dominate the net CIB cosmological dipole in the optical/near-IR. We propose a technique that enables an accurate measurement of the kinematic near-IR CIB dipole. The CIB, effectively the integrated galaxy light (IGL), would be reconstructed from resolved galaxies in the forthcoming space-borne wide surveys covering four bands 0.9 to 2.5 micron. The galaxies will be sub-selected from the identified magnitude range where the dipole component from galaxy clustering is below the expected kinematic dipole. Using this technique the dipole can be measured in each of the bands at the statistical signal-to-noise S/N>50--100 with the forthcoming Euclid and Roman surveys, isolating CMB dipole's kinematic nature., MNRAS Letters, in press

We present a scenario for fast growth of cosmological perturbations; $\delta(t) \sim a(t)^s$, $a(t)$ being the scale factor, with $s > 10$ for the numerical examples reported in this article. The basic ingredients of the scenario are an early matter dominated era and the dark fermion which experiences a scalar mediated force during the epoch. Both of these arise in string/supergravity models. The fast growth occurs for sub-horizon density perturbations of the dark fermion. The fast growth has a rich set of phenomenological implications. We outline implications for the formation of primordial black holes and the production of gravitational waves. Primordial black holes in the sub-lunar mass range (which are ideal dark matter candidates) can be produced. The quasi-molecular mechanism of recombination, recently suggested by Kereselidze et al., is a non-standard process where an electron and two neighboring protons in the early universe directly form an ionized hydrogen molecule in a highly excited state, which then descends to lower levels or dissociates. It has been suggested that the increased binding energy due to the participation of a second proton may lead to an earlier cosmic recombination that alleviates the Hubble tension. Revisiting the quasi-molecular channel of recombination in more details, we find that the original work significantly overestimated the probability of finding a pair of adjacent protons in the relevant epoch ($z\sim $ a few thousand). Our new estimation suggests that the quasi-molecular mechanism of recombination cannot be the primary cause of the Hubble tension., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We use 118 H$\beta$ quasar (QSO) observations in the redshift range $0.0023 \leq z \leq 0.89$ to simultaneously constrain cosmological model parameters and QSO 2-parameter radius-luminosity ($R-L$) relation parameters in six different cosmological models. We find that the $R-L$ relation parameters for these QSOs are independent of the assumed cosmology so these QSOs seem to be standardizable through the $R-L$ relation (although there is a complication that might render this untrue). Cosmological constraints obtained using these QSOs are weak, more favor currently decelerated cosmological expansion, and typically are in $\sim 2\sigma$ tension with those obtained from a joint analysis of baryon acoustic oscillation and Hubble parameter measurements. Extending the $R-L$ relation to a 3-parameter one to try to correct for the accretion rate effect does not result in a reduction of the cosmological constraints discrepancy nor does it result in the hoped-for significant reduction of the intrinsic scatter of the $R-L$ relation., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, H$\beta$ QSO data are given

The possibility that primordial black holes (PBHs) form a part of dark matter has been considered over a wide mass range from the Planck mass ($10^{-5}~\rm g$) to the level of the supermassive black hole in the center of the galaxy. Primordial origin might be one of the most important formation channel of supermassive black holes. We use the non-detection of lensing effect of very long baseline interferometer observations of compact radio sources with extremely high angular resolution as a promising probe to constrain the abundance of intergalactic PBHs in the mass range $\sim10^4$-$10^9~M_{\odot}$. For a sample of well-measured 543 flat-spectrum compact radio sources, no milli-lensed images are found with angular separations between $1.5$ milli-arcseconds and $50$ milli-arcseconds. From this null search result, we derive that the fraction of dark matter made up of supermassive PBHs in the mass range $\sim10^6$-$10^8~M_{\odot}$ is $\lesssim1.48\%$ at $95\%$ confidence level. This constraints would be significantly improved due to the rapid increase of the number of measured compact radio sources. For instance, on the basis of none confirmed milli-lensing candidate in the latest $\sim14000$ sources, we derive the abundance of supermassive PBHs and obtain that it is $\lesssim0.06\%$ at $95\%$ confidence level., 8 pages, 4 figures, Accepted by MNRAS

We study the scenario of Kanadiakis horizon entropy cosmology which arises from the application of the gravity-thermodynamics conjecture using the Kaniadakis modified entropy. The resulting modified Friedmann equations contain extra terms that constitute an effective dark energy sector. We use data from Cosmic chronometers, Supernova Type Ia, HII galaxies, Strong lensing systems, and Baryon acoustic oscillations observations and we apply a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis to construct the likelihood contours for the model parameters. We find that the Kaniadakis parameter is constrained around 0, namely, around the value where the standard Bekenstein-Hawking is recovered. Concerning the normalized Hubble parameter, we find $h=0.708^{+0.012}_{-0.011}$, a result that is independently verified by applying the $\mathbf{\mathbb{H}}0(z)$ diagnostic and, thus, we conclude that the scenario at hand can alleviate the $H_0$ tension problem. Regarding the transition redshift, the reconstruction of the cosmographic parameters gives $z_T=0.715^{+0.042}_{-0.041}$. Furthermore, we apply the AICc, BIC and DIC information criteria and we find that in most datasets the scenario is statistical equivalent to $\Lambda$CDM one. Moreover, we examine the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) and we show that the scenario satisfies the corresponding requirements. Additionally, we perform a phase-space analysis, and we show that the Universe past attractor is the matter-dominated epoch, while at late times the Universe results in the dark-energy-dominated solution. Finally, we show that Kanadiakis horizon entropy cosmology accepts heteroclinic sequences, but it cannot exhibit bounce and turnaround solutions., Comment: Version accepted in MNRAS

We consider the recently proposed possibility that dark energy (DE) and baryons may scatter through a pure momentum exchange process, leaving the background evolution unaffected. Earlier work has shown that, even for barn-scale cross-sections, the imprints of this scattering process on linear cosmological observables is too tiny to be observed. We therefore turn our attention to non-linear scales, and for the first time investigate the signatures of DE-baryon scattering on the non-linear formation of cosmic structures, by running a suite of large N-body simulations. The observables we extract include the non-linear matter power spectrum, halo mass function, and density and baryon fraction profiles of halos. We find that in the non-linear regime the signatures of DE-baryon scattering are significantly larger than their linear counterparts, due to the important role of angular momentum in collapsing structures, and potentially observable. The most promising observables in this sense are the baryon density and baryon fraction profiles of halos, which can potentially be constrained by a combination of kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ), thermal SZ, and weak lensing measurements. Overall, our results indicate that future prospects for cosmological and astrophysical direct detection of non-gravitational signatures of dark energy are extremely bright., 21 pages, 19 sub-figures arranged in 10 figures. We present a new methodology to analyse in a comprehensive way large-scale and supernovae (or any other distance indicator) surveys. Our approach combines galaxy and supernova position and redshift data with supernova peculiar velocities, obtained through their magnitude scatter, to construct a 6x2pt analysis which includes six power spectra. The 3x3 correlation matrix of these spectra expresses exhaustively the information content of the surveys at the linear level. We proceed then to forecast the performance of future surveys like LSST and 4MOST with a Fisher Matrix analysis, adopting both a model-dependent and a model-independent approach. We compare the performance of the 6x2pt approach to the traditional one using only galaxy clustering and some recently proposed combinations of galaxy and supernovae data and quantify the possible gains by optimally extracting the linear information. We show that the 6x2pt method shrinks the uncertainty area in the $\sigma_8, \gamma$ plane by more than half when compared to the traditional method. The combined clustering and velocity data on the growth of structures has uncertainties at similar levels to those of the CMB but exhibit orthogonal degeneracies, and the combined constraints yield improvements of factors of 5 in each of the five cosmological parameters here considered. Concerning the model-independent results, we find that our method can improve the constraints on $H(z)/H_0$ in all redshift bins by more than 70% with respect to the galaxy clustering alone and by 30% when supernova velocities (but not clustering) are considered, reaching a precision of 3-4% at high redshifts., Comment: v3: added references and discussions; extended Table 3; tested more general non-linear RSD modelling; results unchanged

The use of gravitational wave standard sirens for cosmological analyses is becoming well known, with particular interest in measuring the Hubble constant, $H_0$, and in shedding light on the current tension between early- and late-time measurements. The current tension is over $4\sigma$ and standard sirens will be able to provide a completely independent measurement. Dark sirens (binary black hole or neutron star mergers with no electromagnetic counterparts) can be informative if the missing redshift information is provided through the use of galaxy catalogues to identify potential host galaxies of the merger. However, galaxy catalogue incompleteness affects this analysis, and accurate modelling of it is essential for obtaining an unbiased measurement of $H_0$. Previously this has been done by assuming uniform completeness within the sky area of a gravitational wave event. This paper presents an updated methodology in which the completeness of the galaxy catalogue is estimated in a directionally-dependent matter, by pixelating the sky and computing the completeness of the galaxy catalogue along each line of sight. The $H_0$ inference for a single event is carried out on a pixel-by-pixel basis, and the pixels are combined for the final result. A reanalysis of the events in the first gravitational wave transient catalogue (GWTC-1) leads to an improvement on the measured value of $H_0$ of approximately 5% compared to the 68.3% highest-density interval of the equivalent LIGO and Virgo result, with $H_0= 68.8^{+15.9}_{-7.8}$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

The measurement of the expansion history of the Universe from the redshift unknown gravitational wave (GW) sources (dark GW sources) detectable from the network of \texttt{LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA} (\texttt{LVK}) detectors depends on the synergy with the galaxy surveys having accurate redshift measurements over a broad redshift range, large sky coverage, and detectability of fainter galaxies. In this work, we explore the possible synergy of the LVK with the spectroscopic galaxy surveys such as \texttt{DESI} and \texttt{SPHEREx} to measure the cosmological parameters which are related to the cosmic expansion history and the GW bias parameters. We show that by using the three-dimensional spatial cross-correlation between the dark GW sources and the spectroscopic galaxy samples, we can measure the value of Hubble constant with about $2\%$ and $1.5\%$ precision from \texttt{LVK+DESI} and \texttt{LVK+SPHEREx} respectively within the five years of observation time with $50\%$ duty-cycle. Similarly, the dark energy equation of state can be measured with about $10\%$ and $8\%$ precision from \texttt{LVK+DESI} and \texttt{LVK+SPHEREx} respectively. We find that due to the large sky coverage of \texttt{SPHEREx} than \texttt{DESI}, performance in constraining the cosmological parameters is better from the former than the latter. By combining \texttt{Euclid} along with \texttt{DESI} and \texttt{SPHEREx}, a marginal gain in the measurability of the cosmological parameters is possible from the sources at high redshift ($z\geq 0.9$)., 16 pages, 6 figures. We investigate the joint density-velocity evolution in $f(R)$ gravity using smooth, compensated spherical top-hats as a proxy for the non-linear regime. Using the Hu-Sawicki model as a working example, we solve the coupled continuity, Euler and Einstein equations using an iterative hybrid Lagrangian-Eulerian scheme. The novel aspect of this scheme is that the metric potentials are solved for analytically in the Eulerian frame. The evolution is assumed to follow GR at very early epochs and switches to $f(R)$ at a pre-determined epoch. Choosing the `switching epoch' too early is computationally expensive because of high frequency oscillations; choosing it too late potentially destroys consistency with $\Lambda$CDM. To make an informed choice, we perform an eigenvalue analysis of the background model which gives a ballpark estimate of the magnitude of oscillations. There are two length scales in the problem: the comoving Compton wavelength of the associated scalar field and the width of the top-hat. The evolution is determined by their ratio. When the ratio is large, the evolution is scale-independent and the density-velocity divergence relation (DVDR) is unique. When the ratio is small, the evolution is very close to GR, except for the formation of a spike near the top-hat edge, a feature which has been noted in earlier literature. We are able to qualitatively explain this feature in terms of the analytic solution for the metric potentials, in the absence of the chameleon mechanism. Primordial black holes (PBHs) are dark matter candidates that span broad mass ranges from $10^{-17}$ $M_\odot$ to $\sim 100$ $M_\odot$. We show that the stochastic gravitational wave background can be a powerful window for the detection of sub-solar mass PBHs and shed light on their formation channel via third-generation gravitational wave detectors such as Cosmic Explorer and the Einstein Telescope. By using the mass distribution of the compact objects and the redshift evolution of the merger rates, we can distinguish astrophysical sources from PBHs and will be able to constrain the fraction of sub-solar mass PBHs $\leq 1$ $M_\odot$ in the form of dark matter $f_{PBH}\leq 1\%$ at $68\%$ C.L. even for a pessimistic value of a binary suppression factor. In the absence of any suppression of the merger rate, constraints on $f_{PBH}$ will be less than $0.001\%$. Furthermore, we will be able to measure the redshift evolution of the PBH merger rate with about $1\%$ accuracy, making it possible to uniquely distinguish between the Poisson and clustered PBH scenarios., 8 pages, 4 figures. The primordial gravitational wave background (GWB) offers an exciting future avenue of discovery for new physics. Its information content encodes multiple eras in the early Universe's history, corresponding to many orders of magnitude in frequency and physical scale to be measured today. By numerically solving for the GW transfer functions we provide simple yet accurate formulas describing the average power of the large-scale energy spectrum of the GWB for arbitrary primordial tensor power spectra. In doing so we can pedagogically explain and clarify previous GWB literature, highlight the important cosmological parameters of various GWB features, and reveal multiple ways in which cancelling conceptual errors can give deceptively accurate results. The scales considered here are particularly important for CMB probes of the GWB, via $B$-modes and spectral distortions. In particular, we carefully study the effects of both neutrino damping, and the precise nature of the transition between the radiation-dominated (RD) and matter-dominated (MD) eras. A byproduct of numerically solving the problem is the ability to study the robustness of common approximations in the literature. Specifically, we show that a numerical treatment is especially important around the RD--MD transition, and for a brief moment of history where neutrino damping occurs during MD. We study gravitational lensing of gravitational waves from compact object binaries as a probe of compact dark matter (DM) objects such as primordial black holes. Assuming a point mass lens, we perform parameter estimation of lensed gravitational wave signals from compact object binaries to determine the detectability of the lens with ground based laser interferometers. Then, considering binary populations that LIGO-Virgo has been probing, we derive a constraint on the abundance of compact DM from non-observation of lensed events. We find that the LIGO-Virgo observations imply that compact objects heavier than $M_l = 200M_\odot$ can not constitute all DM and less than $40\%$ of DM can be in compact objects heavier than $M_l = 400M_\odot$. We also show that the DM fraction in compact objects can be probed by LIGO in its final sensitivity for $M_l > 40M_\odot$ reaching $2\%$ of the DM abundance at $M_l > 200M_\odot$, and by ET for $M_l > 1M_\odot$ reaching DM fraction as low as $7\times 10^{-5}$ at $M_l > 40M_\odot$., 8 pages, 4 figures. published version

We use 78 reverberation-measured Mg II time-lag quasars (QSOs) in the redshift range $0.0033 \leq z \leq 1.89$ to constrain cosmological parameters in six different cosmological models. The basis of our method is the use of the radius-luminosity or $R-L$ relation to standardize these 78 Mg II QSOs. In each cosmological model we simultaneously determine $R-L$ relation and cosmological model parameters, thus avoiding the circularity problem. We find that the $R-L$ relation parameter values are independent of the cosmological model used in the analysis thus establishing that current Mg II QSOs are standardizable candles. Cosmological constraints obtained using these QSOs are significantly weaker than, but consistent with, those obtained from a joint analysis of baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) observations and Hubble parameter [$H(z)$] measurements. So, we also analyse these QSOs in conjunction with the BAO + $H(z)$ data and find cosmological constraints consistent with the standard spatially-flat $\Lambda$CDM model as well as with mild dark energy dynamics and a little spatial curvature. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will open the mHz frequency window of the gravitational wave (GW) landscape. Among all the new GW sources expected to emit in this frequency band, extreme mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) constitute a unique laboratory for astrophysics and fundamental physics. Here we show that EMRIs can also be used to extract relevant cosmological information, complementary to both electromagnetic (EM) and other GW observations. By using the loudest EMRIs (SNR$>$100) detected by LISA as dark standard sirens, statistically matching their sky localisation region with mock galaxy catalogs, we find that constraints on $H_0$ can reach $\sim$1.1% ($\sim$3.6%) accuracy, at the 90% credible level, in our best (worst) case scenario. By considering a dynamical dark energy (DE) cosmological model, with $\Lambda$CDM parameters fixed by other observations, we further show that in our best (worst) case scenario $\sim$5.9% ($\sim$12.3%) relative uncertainties at the 90% credible level can be obtained on $w_0$, the DE equation of state parameter. Besides being relevant in their own right, EMRI measurements will be affected by different systematics compared to both EM and ground-based GW observations. Accurate estimation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) angular power spectrum is enticing due to the prospect for precision cosmology it presents. Galactic foreground emissions, however, contaminate the CMB signal and need to be subtracted reliably in order to lessen systematic errors on the CMB temperature estimates. Typically bright foregrounds in a region lead to further uncertainty in temperature estimates in the area even after some foreground removal technique is performed and hence determining the underlying full-sky angular power spectrum poses a challenge. We explore the feasibility of utilizing artificial neural networks to predict the angular power spectrum of the full sky CMB temperature maps from the observed angular power spectrum of the partial sky in which CMB temperatures in some bright foreground regions are masked. We present our analysis at large angular scales with two different masks. We produce unbiased predictions of the full-sky angular power spectrum and recover the underlying theoretical power spectrum using neural networks. Our predictions are also uncorrelated to a large extent. Gravitational waves (GWs) may be magnified or de-magnified due to lensing. This phenomenon will bias the distance estimation based on the matched filtering technique. Via the multi-sphere ray-tracing technique, we study the GW magnification effect and selection effect with particular attention to the stellar-mass binary black holes (BBHs). We find that, for the observed luminosity distance $\lesssim 3~\mathrm{Gpc}$, which is the aLIGO/Virgo observational horizon limit, the average magnification keeps as unity, namely unbiased estimation, with the relative distance uncertainty $\sigma(\hat{d})/\hat{d}\simeq0.5\%\sim1\%$. Beyond this observational horizon, the estimation bias can not be ignored, and with the scatters $\sigma(\hat{d})/\hat{d} = 1\%\sim 15\%$. Furthermore, we forecast these numbers for Einstein Telescope. We find that the average magnification keeps closely as unity for the observed luminosity distance $\lesssim 90~\mathrm{Gpc}$. The luminosity distance estimation error due to lensing for Einstein Telescope is about $\sigma(\hat{d})/\hat{d} \simeq 10\%$ for the luminosity distance $\gtrsim 25~\mathrm{Gpc}$. Unlike the aLIGO/Virgo case, this sizable error is not due to the selection effect. It purely comes from the unavoidably accumulated lensing magnification. Moreover, we investigated the effects of the orientation angle and the BH mass distribution models. Gravitational lensing has long been used to measure or constrain cosmology models. Although the lensing effect of gravitational waves has not been observed by LIGO/Virgo, it is expected that there can be a few to a few hundreds lensed events to be detected by the future Japanese space-borne interferometers DECIGO and B-DECIGO, if they are running for 4 years. Given the predicted lensed gravitational wave events, one can estimate the constraints on the cosmological parameters via the lensing statistics and the time delay methods. With the lensing statistics method, the knowledge of the lens redshifts, even with the moderate uncertainty, will set the tight bound on the energy density parameter $\Omega_M$ for matter, that is, $0.288\lesssim\Omega_M\lesssim0.314$ at best. The constraint on the Hubble constant $H_0$ can be determined using the time delay method. It is found out that at $5\sigma$, $|\delta H_0|/H_0$ ranges from $3\%$ to $11\%$ for DECIGO, and B-DECIGO will give less constrained results, $8\%-15\%$. In this work, the uncertainties on the luminosity distance and the time delay distance are set to be $10\%$ and $20\%$, respectively. High resolution spectra of quasar absorption systems provide the best constraints on temporal or spatial changes of fundamental constants in the early universe. An important systematic that has never before been quantified concerns model non-uniqueness. The absorption structure is generally complicated, comprising many blended lines. This characteristic means any given system can be fitted equally well by many slightly different models, each having a different value of \alpha, the fine structure constant. We use AI Monte Carlo modelling to quantify non-uniqueness. Extensive supercomputer calculations are reported, revealing new systematic effects that guide future analyses: (i) Whilst higher signal to noise and improved spectral resolution produces a smaller statistical uncertainty for \alpha, model non-uniqueness adds a significant additional uncertainty. (ii) Non-uniqueness depends on the line broadening mechanism used. We show that modelling the spectral data using turbulent line broadening results in far greater non-uniqueness, hence this should no longer be done. Instead, for varying \alpha studies, it is important to use the more physically appropriate compound broadening. (iii) We have studied two absorption systems in detail. Generalising thus requires caution. Nevertheless, if non-uniqueness is present in all or most quasar absorption systems, it seems unavoidable that attempts to determine the existence (or non-existence) of spacetime variations of fundamental constants is best approached using a statistical sample., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

Peters' formula is an analytical estimate of the time-scale of gravitational wave (GW)-induced coalescence of binary systems. It is used in countless applications, where the convenience of a simple formula outweighs the need for precision. However, many promising sources of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA), such as supermassive black hole binaries and extreme mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs), are expected to enter the LISA band with highly eccentric ($e \gtrsim$ 0.9) and highly relativistic orbits. These are exactly the two limits in which Peters' estimate performs the worst. In this work, we expand upon previous results and give simple analytical fits to quantify how the inspiral time-scale is affected by the relative 1.5 post-Newtonian (PN) hereditary fluxes and spin-orbit couplings. We discuss several cases that demand a more accurate GW time-scale. We show how this can have a major influence on quantities that are relevant for LISA event-rate estimates, such as the EMRI critical semi-major axis. We further discuss two types of environmental perturbations that can play a role in the inspiral phase: the gravitational interaction with a third massive body and the energy loss due to dynamical friction and torques from a surrounding gas medium ubiquitous in galactic nuclei. With the aid of PN corrections to the time-scale in vacuum, we find simple analytical expressions for the regions of phase space in which environmental perturbations are of comparable strength to the effects of any particular PN order, being able to qualitatively reproduce the results of much more sophisticated analyses., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. An important route to testing General Relativity (GR) at cosmological scales is usually done by constraining modified gravity (MG) parameters added to the Einstein perturbed equations. Most studies have analyzed so far constraints on pairs of MG parameters, but here, we explore constraints on one parameter at a time while fixing the other at its GR value. This allows us to analyze various models while benefiting from a stronger constraining power from the data. We also explore which specific datasets are in tension with GR. We find that models with ($\mu=1$, $\eta$) and ($\mu$, $\eta=1$) exhibit a 3.9-$\sigma$ and 3.8-$\sigma$ departure from GR when using Planck18+SNe+BAO, while ($\mu$, $\eta$) shows a tension of 3.4-$\sigma$. We find no tension with GR for models with the MG parameter $\Sigma$ fixed to its GR value. Using a Bayesian model selection analysis, we find that some one-parameter MG models are moderately favored over $\Lambda$CDM when using all dataset combinations except Planck CMB Lensing and DES data. Namely, Planck18 shows a moderate tension with GR that only increases when adding any combination of RSD, SNe, or BAO. However, adding lensing diminishes or removes these tensions, which can be attributed to the ability of lensing in constraining the MG parameter $\Sigma$. The two overall groups of datasets are found to have a dichotomy when performing consistency tests with GR, which may be due to systematic effects, lack of constraining power, or modelling. The underlying geometri of spacetime algebra allows one to derive a force by contracting the relativistic generalization of angular momentum, M, with the mass-current, mw, where w is a proper 4-vector velocity. By applying this force to a cosmological object, a repulsive inverse distance-square law is found, which is proportional to the velocity dispersion squared of that structure. Expanding from previous work we present weak lensing measurements for a total sample of 30 distant ($z_\mathrm{median}=0.93$) massive galaxy clusters from the South Pole Telescope Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SPT-SZ) Survey, measuring galaxy shapes in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys images. We remove cluster members and preferentially select $z\gtrsim 1.4$ background galaxies via $V-I$ colour, employing deep photometry from VLT/FORS2 and Gemini-South/GMOS. We apply revised calibrations for the weak lensing shape measurements and the source redshift distribution to estimate the cluster masses. In combination with earlier Magellan/Megacam results for lower-redshifts clusters we infer refined constraints on the scaling relation between the SZ detection significance and the cluster mass, in particular regarding its redshift evolution. The mass scale inferred from the weak lensing data is lower by a factor $0.76^{+0.10}_{-0.14}$ (at our pivot redshift $z=0.6$) compared to what would be needed to reconcile a flat Planck $\nu\Lambda$CDM cosmology (in which the sum of the neutrino masses is a free parameter) with the observed SPT-SZ cluster counts. Gravitational waves (GWs) have the potential to probe the entirety of cosmological history due to their nearly perfect decoupling from the thermal bath and any intervening matter after emission. In recent years, GW cosmology has evolved from merely being an exciting prospect to an actively pursued avenue for discovery, and the early results are very promising. As we highlight in this paper, spectral distortions (SDs) of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) uniquely probe GWs over six decades in frequency, bridging the gap between astrophysical high- and cosmological low-frequency measurements. This means SDs will not only complement other GW observations, but will be the sole probe of physical processes at certain scales. To illustrate this point, we explore the constraining power of various proposed SD missions on a number of phenomenological scenarios: early-universe phase transitions (PTs), GW production via the dynamics of SU(2) and ultra-light U(1) axions, and cosmic string (CS) network collapse. We highlight how some regions of parameter space were already excluded with data from COBE/FIRAS, taken over two decades ago. To facilitate the implementation of SD constraints in arbitrary models we provide GW2SD. The standard cosmological model is inherently relativistic, and yet a wide range of cosmological observations can be predicted accurately from essentially Newtonian theory. This is not the case on `ultra-large' distance scales, around the cosmic horizon size, however, where relativistic effects can no longer be neglected. In this paper, we present a novel suite of 53 fully relativistic simulations generated using the gevolution code, each covering the full sky out to $z \approx$ 0.85, and approximately 1930 square degrees out to $z \approx$ 3.55. These include a relativistic treatment of massive neutrinos, as well as the gravitational potential that can be used to exactly calculate observables on the past light cone. The simulations are divided into two sets, the first being a set of 39 simulations of the same fiducial cosmology (based on the Euclid Flagship 2 cosmology) with different realisations of the initial conditions, and the second which fixes the initial conditions, but varies each of seven cosmological parameters in turn. Taken together, these simulations allow us to perform statistical studies and calculate derivatives of any relativistic observable with respect to cosmological parameters. As an example application, we compute the cross-correlation between the Doppler magnification term in the convergence, $\kappa_v$, and the CDM+baryon density contrast, $\delta_{\rm cb}$, which arises only in a (special) relativistic treatment. We are able to accurately recover this term as predicted by relativistic perturbation theory, and study its sample variance and derivatives with respect to cosmological parameters., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, corresponds to published version

Many late time approaches for the solution of the Hubble tension use late time smooth deformations of the Hubble expansion rate $H(z)$ of the Planck18/$\Lambda$CDM best fit to match the locally measured value of $H_0$ while effectively keeping the comoving distance to the last scattering surface and $\Omega_{0m} h^2$ fixed to maintain consistency with Planck CMB measurements. A well known problem of these approaches is that they worsen the fit to low $z$ distance probes. Here we show that another problem of these approaches is that they worsen the level of the $\Omega_{0m}-\sigma_8$ growth tension. We use the generic class of CPL parametrizations corresponding to evolving dark energy equation of state parameter $w(z)=w_0+w_1\frac{z}{1+z}$ with local measurements $H_0$ prior and identify the pairs $(w_0, w_1)$ that satisfy this condition. This is a generic class of smooth deformations of $H(z)$ that are designed to address the Hubble tension. We show that for these models the growth tension between dynamical probe data and CMB constraints is worse than the corresponding tension of the standard Planck18/$\Lambda$CDM model. We justify this feature using a full numerical solution of the growth equation and fit to the data, as well as by using an approximate analytic approach. We use Pantheon Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) apparent magnitude, DES-3yr binned SN Ia apparent magnitude, Hubble parameter, and baryon acoustic oscillation measurements to constrain six spatially flat and non-flat cosmological models. These sets of data provide mutually consistent cosmological constraints in the six cosmological models we study. A joint analysis of these data sets provides model-independent estimates of the Hubble constant, $H_0=68.8\pm1.8\ \rm{km \ s^{-1} \ Mpc^{-1}}$, and the non-relativistic matter density parameter, $\Omega_{\rm m_0}=0.294\pm0.020$. We consider a primordial black hole of very high mass, $10^9-10^{10}M_\odot$, surrounded by dark matter and barionic halo at redshifts $z\sim20$ without any local sources of energy release. Such heavy and concentrated objects in the early universe were previously called ``cosmological dinosaurs''. Spectral distribution and spatial variation of the brightness in the 21 cm line of atomic hydrogen are calculated with the theory of radiation transfer. It is shown that a narrow and deep absorption arises in the form of the spherical shell around the primordial black hole at the certain radius. The parameters of this shell depend almost exclusively on the mass of the black hole. The hardware and methodological aspects of the search for such objects are discussed., 9 pages, 10 figures

We use six different cosmological models to study the recently-released compilation of X-ray and UV flux measurements of 2038 quasars (QSOs) which span the redshift range $0.009 \leq z \leq 7.5413$. We find, for the full QSO data set, that the parameters of the X-ray and UV luminosities $L_X-L_{UV}$ relation used to standardized these QSOs depend on the cosmological model used to determine these parameters, i.e, it appears that the full QSO data set include QSOs that are not standardized and so cannot be used for the purpose of constraining cosmological parameters. Subsets of the QSO data, restricted to redshifts $z \lesssim 1.5-1.7$ obey the $L_X-L_{UV}$ relation in a cosmological-model-independent manner, and so can be used to constrain cosmological parameters. To exploit the power of next-generation large-scale structure surveys, ensembles of numerical simulations are necessary to give accurate theoretical predictions of the statistics of observables. High-fidelity simulations come at a towering computational cost. Therefore, approximate but fast simulations, surrogates, are widely used to gain speed at the price of introducing model error. We propose a general method that exploits the correlation between simulations and surrogates to compute fast, reduced-variance statistics of large-scale structure observables without model error at the cost of only a few simulations. We call this approach Convergence Acceleration by Regression and Pooling (CARPool). In numerical experiments with intentionally minimal tuning, we apply CARPool to a handful of GADGET-III $N$-body simulations paired with surrogates computed using COmoving Lagrangian Acceleration (COLA). We find $\sim 100$-fold variance reduction even in the non-linear regime, up to $k_\mathrm{max} \approx 1.2$ $h {\rm Mpc^{-1}}$ for the matter power spectrum. CARPool realises similar improvements for the matter bispectrum. In the nearly linear regime CARPool attains far larger sample variance reductions. By comparing to the 15,000 simulations from the Quijote suite, we verify that the CARPool estimates are unbiased, as guaranteed by construction, even though the surrogate misses the simulation truth by up to $60\%$ at high $k$. Furthermore, even with a fully configuration-space statistic like the non-linear matter density probability density function, CARPool achieves unbiased variance reduction factors of up to $\sim 10$, without any further tuning. We study the role of gravitational waves (GW) in the heat death of the universe. Due to the GW emission, in a very long period, dynamical systems in the universe suffer from persistent mechanical energy dissipation, evolving to a state of universal rest and death. With N-body simulations, we adopt a simple yet representative scheme to calculate the energy loss due to the GW emission. For current dark matter systems with mass $\sim10^{12}-10^{15} M_\odot$, we estimate their GW emission timescale as $\sim10^{19}-10^{25}$ years. This timescale is significantly larger than any baryon processes in the universe, but still $\sim10^{80}$ times shorter than that of the Hawking radiation. We stress that our analysis could be invalid due to many unknowns such as the dynamical chaos, the quadrupole momentum of halos, the angular momentum loss, the dynamic friction, the central black hole accretion, the dark matter decays or annihilations, the property of dark energy and the future evolution of the universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 6 pages, 4 figures

We combine 23 Hubble constant measurements based on Cepheids-SN Ia, TRGB-SN Ia, Miras-SN Ia, Masers, Tully Fisher, Surface Brightness Fluctuations, SN II, Time-delay Lensing, Standard Sirens and $\gamma$-ray Attenuation, obtaining our best {\it optimistic} $H_0$ estimate, that is $H_0=72.94\pm0.75$ km/s/Mpc at 68\% CL. This is in $5.9\sigma$ tension with the $\Lambda$CDM model, therefore we evaluate its impact on the extended Dark Energy cosmological models that can alleviate the tension. We find more than $4.9\sigma$ evidence for a phantom Dark Energy equation of state in the $w$CDM scenario, the cosmological constant ruled out at more than $3\sigma$ in a $w_0w_a$CDM model and more than $5.7\sigma$ evidence for a coupling between Dark Matter and Dark Energy in the IDE scenario. Finally, we check the robustness of our results, and we quote two additional combinations of the Hubble constant. Alternative theories of gravity predict modifications in the propagation of gravitational waves (GW) through space-time. One of the smoking-gun predictions of such theories is the change in the GW luminosity distance to GW sources as a function of redshift relative to the electromagnetic (EM) luminosity distance expected from EM probes. We propose a multi-messenger test of the theory of general relativity from the propagation of gravitational waves by combining EM and GW observations to resolve these issues from GW sources without EM counterparts (which are also referred to as dark standard sirens). By using the relation between the geometric distances accessible from baryon acoustic oscillation measurements, and luminosity distance measurements from the GW sources, we can measure any deviation from the general theory of relativity via the GW sources of unknown redshift that will be detectable by networks of GW detectors such as LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA. Using this technique, the fiducial value of the frictional term can be measured to a precision $\Xi_0=0.98^{+0.04}_{-0.23}$ after marginalizing over redshift dependence, cosmological parameters, and GW bias parameters with $\sim 3500$ dark standard sirens of masses $30\,\rm M_\odot$ each distributed up to redshift $z=0.5$. For a fixed redshift dependence, a value of $\Xi_0=0.99^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$ can be measured with a similar number of dark sirens. Application of our methodology to the far more numerous dark standard sirens detectable with next generation GW detectors, such as LISA, Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer, will allow achievement of higher accuracy than possible from use of bright standard sirens., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures.
