We present a multiwavelength study of the AGN-host starburst galaxy PKS 0529-549 at z similar or equal to 2.6. We use (1) new ALMA observations of the dust continuum and of the [CI] 370 mu m line, tracing molecular gas, (2) SINFONI spectroscopy of the [OIII] 5007 angstrom line, tracing ionized gas, and (3) ATCA radio continuum images, tracing synchrotron emission. Both [CI] and [O III] show regular velocity gradients, but their systemic velocities and position angles differ by similar to 300 km s(-1) and similar to 30 degrees, respectively. The [CI] is consistent with a rotating disc, aligned with the dust and stellar continuum, while the [OIII] likely traces an outflow, aligned with two AGN-driven radio lobes. We model the [CI] cube using 3D disc models, which give best-fitting rotation velocities V-rot similar or equal to 310 km s(-1) and velocity dispersions sigma(V) less than or similar to 30 km s(-1). Hence, the [CI] disc has V-rot/sigma(V) greater than or similar to 10 and is not particularly turbulent, similar to local galaxy discs. The dynamical mass (similar to 10(11) M-circle dot) is comparable to the baryonic mass within the errors. This suggests that baryons dominate the inner galaxy dynamics, similar to massive galaxies at z similar or equal to 0. Remarkably, PKS 0529-549 lies on the local baryonic Tully-Fisher relation, indicating that at least some massive galaxies are already in place and kinematically relaxed at z similar or equal to 2.6. This work highlights the potential of the [CI] line to trace galaxy dynamics at high z, as well as the importance of multiwavelength data to interpret gas kinematics.

In this paper we investigate the statistical properties of the Tully-Fisher relation for a sample of 32 galaxies with measured distances from the Cepheid period-luminosity relation and/or TRGB stars. We take advantage of panchromatic photometry in 12 bands (from FUV to 4.5 $\mu$m) and of spatially resolved HI kinematics. We use these data together with three kinematic measures ($W^{i}_{50}$, $V_{max}$ and $V_{flat}$) extracted from the global HI profiles or HI rotation curves, so as to construct 36 correlations allowing us to select the one with the least scatter. We introduce a tightness parameter $\sigma_{\perp}$ of the TFr, in order to obtain a slope-independent measure of the goodness of fit. The Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) is an empirical relation between galaxy luminosity and rotation velocity. We present here the first TFR of galaxies beyond the local Universe that uses carbon monoxide (CO) as the kinematic tracer. Our final sample includes 25 isolated, non-interacting star-forming galaxies with double-horned or boxy CO integrated line profiles located at redshifts z, 17 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables. We report a tight linear relation between the HI circular velocity measured at 6 $R_{\rm e}$ and the stellar velocity dispersion measured within 1 $R_{\rm e}$ for a sample of 16 early-type galaxies with stellar mass between $10^{10}$ and $10^{11}$ $\mathrm{M}_\odot$. The key difference from previous studies is that we only use spatially resolved $v_\mathrm{circ}$(HI) measurements obtained at large radius for a sizeable sample of objects. We can therefore link a kinematical tracer of the gravitational potential in the dark-matter dominated outer regions of galaxies with one in the inner regions, where baryons control the distribution of mass. We find that $v_\mathrm{circ}$(HI) = 1.33 $\sigma_\mathrm{e}$ with an observed scatter of just 12 percent. This indicates a strong coupling between luminous and dark matter from the inner- to the outer regions of early-type galaxies, analogous to the situation in spirals and dwarf irregulars. The $v_\mathrm{circ}$(HI)-$\sigma_\mathrm{e}$ relation is shallower than those based on $v_\mathrm{circ}$ measurements obtained from stellar kinematics and modelling at smaller radius, implying that \vcirc\ declines with radius -- as in bulge-dominated spirals. Indeed, the value of $v_\mathrm{circ}$(HI) is typically 25 percent lower than the maximum $v_\mathrm{circ}$ derived at $\sim0.2\ R_\mathrm{e}$ from dynamical models. Under the assumption of power-law total density profiles $\rho \propto r^{-\gamma}$, our data imply an average logarithmic slope $\langle\gamma\rangle=2.18\pm0.03$ across the sample, with a scatter of 0.11 around this value. We present the stellar mass (M_*) and Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) absolute Band 1 magnitude (M_W1) Tully-Fisher relations (TFRs) of subsets of galaxies from the CO Legacy Database for the Galex Arecibo SDSS Survey (COLD GASS). We examine the benefits and drawbacks of several commonly used fitting functions in the context of measuring CO(1-0) line widths (and thus rotation velocities), favouring the Gaussian Double Peak function. We find the M_W1 and M_* TFR, for a carefully selected sub-sample, to be M_W1 = (-7.1 +/- 0.6) [log(W_50/sin i) - 2.58] - 23.83 +/- 0.09 and log(M_*/M_Sun) = (3.3 +/- 0.3) [log(W_50/sin i) - 2.58] + 10.51 +/- 0.04, respectively, where W_50 is the width of a galaxy's CO(1-0) integrated profile at 50% of its maximum and the inclination i is derived from the galaxy axial ratio measured on the SDSS r-band image. We find no evidence for any significant offset between the TFRs of COLD GASS galaxies and those of comparison samples of similar redshifts and morphologies. The slope of the COLD GASS M_* TFR agrees with the relation of Pizagno et al. (2005). However, we measure a comparatively shallower slope for the COLD GASS M_W1 TFR as compared to the relation of Tully & Pierce (2000). We attribute this to the fact that the COLD GASS sample comprises galaxies of various (late-type) morphologies. The observed rotation curves of disc galaxies, ranging from late-type dwarf galaxies to early-type spirals, can be fitted remarkably well simply by scaling up the contributions of the stellar and H?i discs. This baryonic scaling model can explain the full breadth of observed rotation curves with only two free parameters. For a small fraction of galaxies, in particular early-type spiral galaxies, H?i scaling appears to fail in the outer parts, possibly due to observational effects or ionization of H?i. The overall success of the baryonic scaling model suggests that the well-known global coupling between the baryonic mass of a galaxy and its rotation velocity (known as the baryonic TullyFisher relation) applies at a more local level as well, and it seems to imply a link between the baryonic mass distribution and the distribution of total mass (including dark matter).

We present ground-based MDM Observatory V-band and Spitzer/InfraRed Array Camera 3.6-mu m-band photometric observations of the 72 representative galaxies of the SAURON survey. Galaxies in our sample probe the elliptical E, lenticular S0 and spiral Sa populations in the nearby Universe, both in field and cluster environments. We perform aperture photometry to derive homogeneous structural quantities. In combination with the SAURON stellar velocity dispersion measured within an effective radius (sigma(e)), this allows us to explore the location of our galaxies in the colour-magnitude, colour-sigma(e), Kormendy, Faber-Jackson and Fundamental Plane scaling relations. We investigate the dependence of these relations on our recent kinematical classification of early-type galaxies (i.e. slow/fast rotators) and the stellar populations. Slow rotator and fast rotator E/S0 galaxies do not populate distinct locations in the scaling relations, although slow rotators display a smaller intrinsic scatter. We find that Sa galaxies deviate from the colour-magnitude and colour-sigma(e) relations due to the presence of dust, while the E/S0 galaxies define tight relations. Surprisingly, extremely young objects do not display the bluest (V - [3.6]) colours in our sample, as is usually the case in optical colours. This can be understood in the context of the large contribution of thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch stars to the infrared, even for young populations, resulting in a very tight (V - [3.6])-sigma(e) relation that in turn allows us to define a strong correlation between metallicity and se. Many Sa galaxies appear to follow the Fundamental Plane defined by E/S0 galaxies. Galaxies that appear offset from the relations correspond mostly to objects with extremely young populations, with signs of ongoing, extended star formation. We correct for this effect in the Fundamental Plane, by replacing luminosity with stellar mass using an estimate of the stellar mass-to-light ratio, so that all galaxies are part of a tight, single relation. The new estimated coefficients are consistent in both photometric bands and suggest that differences in stellar populations account for about half of the observed tilt with respect to the virial prediction. After these corrections, the slow rotator family shows almost no intrinsic scatter around the best-fitting Fundamental Plane. The use of a velocity dispersion within a small aperture (e. g. R-e/8) in the Fundamental Plane results in an increase of around 15 per cent in the intrinsic scatter and an average 10 per cent decrease in the tilt away from the virial relation.

The degeneracy among the disc, bulge and halo contributions to galaxy rotation curves prevents an understanding of the distribution of baryons and dark matter in disc galaxies. In an attempt to break this degeneracy, we present an analysis of the strong gravitational lens SDSS J2141-0001, discovered as part of the Sloan Lens ACS survey. The lens galaxy is a high-inclination, disc-dominated system. We present new Hubble Space Telescope multicolour imaging, gas and stellar kinematics data derived from long-slit spectroscopy and K-band laser guide star adaptive optics imaging, both from the Keck telescopes. We model the galaxy as a sum of concentric axisymmetric bulge, disc and halo components and infer the contribution of each component, using information from gravitational lensing and gas kinematics. This analysis yields a best-fitting total (disc plus bulge) stellar mass of log10(M*/M⊙) = 10.99+0.11- 0.25. The photometric data combined with stellar population synthesis models yield log10(M*/M⊙) = 10.97 ± 0.07 and 11.21 ± 0.07 for the Chabrier and Salpeter initial mass functions (IMFs), respectively. Assuming no cold gas, a Salpeter IMF is marginally disfavoured, with a Bayes factor of 2.7. Accounting for the expected gas fraction of ≃ 20 per cent reduces the lensing plus kinematics stellar mass by 0.10 ± 0.05 dex, resulting in a Bayes factor of 11.9 in favour of a Chabrier IMF. The dark matter halo is roughly spherical, with minor to major axis ratio q3, h= 0.91+0.15- 0.13. The dark matter halo has a maximum circular velocity of Vmax= 276+17- 18 km s-1, and a central density parameter of log10ΔV/2= 5.9+0.9- 0.5. This is higher than predicted for uncontracted dark matter haloes in Λ cold dark matter cosmologies, log10ΔV/2= 5.2, suggesting that either the halo has contracted in response to galaxy formation, or that the halo has a higher than average concentration. Larger samples of spiral galaxy strong gravitational lenses are needed in order to distinguish between these two possibilities. At 2.2 disc scalelengths the dark matter fraction is fDM= 0.55+0.20- 0.15, suggesting that SDSS J2141-0001 is submaximal. We propose a simple model for the origin of fast and slow rotator early-type galaxies (ETG) within the hierarchical Lambda cold dark matter (Lambda CDM) scenario, that is based on the assumption that the mass fraction of stellar discs in ETGs is a proxy for the specific angular momentum expressed via lambda(R). Within our model we reproduce the fraction of fast and slow rotators as a function of magnitude in the ATLAS(3D) survey, assuming that fast-rotating ETGs have at least 10 per cent of their total stellar mass in a disc component. In agreement with ATLAS(3D) observations we find that slow rotators are predominantly galaxies with M-* > 10(10.5) M-circle dot contributing similar to 20 per cent to the overall ETG population. We show in detail that the growth histories of fast and slow rotators are different, supporting the classification of ETGs into these two categories. Slow rotators accrete between similar to 50 and 90 per cent of their stellar mass from satellites and their most massive progenitors have on average up to three major mergers during their evolution. Fast rotators in contrast accrete less than 50 per cent and have on average less than one major merger in their past.We find that the underlying physical reason for the different growth histories is the slowing down and ultimately complete shut-down of gas cooling in massive galaxies. Once cooling and associated star formation in disc stop, galaxies grow via infall from satellites. Frequent minor mergers thereby destroy existing stellar discs via violent relaxation and also tend to lower the specific angular momentum of the main stellar body, lowering lambda(R) into the slow rotator regime.On average, the last gas-rich major merger interaction in slow rotators happens at Z > 1.5, followed by a series of minor mergers. These results support the idea that kinematically decoupled cores (KDC) form during gas-rich major mergers at high Z followed by minor mergers, which build-up the outer layers of the remnant, and make remnants that are initially too flat compared to observations become rounder. Fast rotators are less likely to form such KDCs due to the fact that they have on average less than one major merger in their past. Fast rotators in our model have different formation paths. The majority, 78 per cent, has bulge-to-total stellar mass ratios (BIT) > 0.5 and managed to grow stellar discs due to continued gas cooling or bulges due to frequent minor mergers. The remaining 22 per cent live in high-density environments and consist of low BIT galaxies with gas fractions below 15 per cent, that have exhausted their cold gas reservoir and have no hot halo from which gas can cool. These fast rotators most likely resemble the flattened disc-like fast rotators in the ATLAS(3D) survey.Our results predict that ETGs can change their state from fast to slow rotator and vice versa, while the former is taking place predominantly at low z (z 10(10) M-circle dot) fast rotators being more than one order of magnitude more frequent at z similar to 2.

We investigate the manner in which lenticular galaxies are formed by studying their stellar kinematics: an S0 formed from a fading spiral galaxy should display similar cold outer disc kinematics to its progenitor, while an S0 formed in a minor merger should be more dominated by random motions. In a pilot study, an attempt to distinguish between these scenarios, we have measured the planetary nebula (PN) kinematics of the nearby S0 system NGC 1023. Using the Planetary Nebula Spectrograph, we have detected and measured the line-of-sight velocities of 204 candidate planetary nebulae (PNe) in the field of this galaxy. Out to intermediate radii, the system displays the kinematics of a normal rotationally supported disc system. After correction of its rotational velocities for asymmetric drift, the galaxy lies just below the spiral galaxy Tully-Fisher relation, as one would expect for a fading system. However, at larger radii the kinematics undergo a gradual but major transition to random motion with little rotation. This transition does not seem to reflect a change in the viewing geometry or the presence of a distinct halo component, since the number counts of PNe follow the same simple exponential decline as the stellar continuum with the same projected disc ellipticity out to large radii. The galaxy's small companion, NGC 1023A, does not seem to be large enough to have caused the observed modification either. This combination of properties would seem to indicate a complex evolutionary history in either the transition to form an S0 or in the past life of the spiral galaxy from which the S0 formed. More data sets of this type from both spirals and S0s are needed in order to definitively determine the relationship between these types of system.

We study the location of massive disk galaxies on the Tully-Fisher relation. Using a combination of K-band photometry and high-quality rotation curves, we show that in traditional formulations of the TF relation (using the width of the global HI profile or the maximum rotation velocity), galaxies with rotation velocities larger than 200 km/s lie systematically to the right of the relation defined by less massive systems, causing a characteristic `kink' in the relations. Massive, early-type disk galaxies in particular have a large offset, up to 1.5 magnitudes, from the main relation defined by less massive and later-type spirals. The presence of a change in slope at the high-mass end of the Tully-Fisher relation has important consequences for the use of the Tully-Fisher relation as a tool for estimating distances to galaxies or for probing galaxy evolution. In particular, the luminosity evolution of massive galaxies since z = 1 may have been significantly larger than estimated in several recent studies. We also show that many of the galaxies with the largest offsets have declining rotation curves and that the change in slope largely disappears when we use the asymptotic rotation velocity as kinematic parameter. The remaining deviations from linearity can be removed when we simultaneously use the total baryonic mass (stars + gas) instead of the optical or near-infrared luminosity. Our results strengthen the view that the Tully-Fisher relation fundamentally links the mass of dark matter haloes with the total baryonic mass embedded in them., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. We present rotation curves for 19, mostly luminous, early-type disk galaxies. Rotation velocities are measured from a combination of HI velocity fields and long-slit optical emission line spectra along the major axis. We find that the rotation curves generally rise rapidly in the central regions and often reach rotation velocities of 200 - 300 km/s within a few hundred parsecs of the centre. The detailed shape of the central rotation curves shows a clear dependence on the concentration of the stellar light distribution and the bulge-to-disk luminosity ratio: galaxies with highly concentrated stellar light distributions reach the maximum in their rotation curves at relatively smaller radii than galaxies with small bulges and a relatively diffuse light distribution. We interpret this as a strong indication that the dynamics in the central regions are dominated by the stellar mass. At intermediate radii, many rotation curves decline. The strength of the decline is correlated with the total luminosity of the galaxies, more luminous galaxies having on average more strongly declining rotation curves. At large radii, however, all declining rotation curves flatten out, indicating that substantial amounts of dark matter must be present in these galaxies too. A comparison of our rotation curves with the Universal Rotation Curve from Persic et al. (1996) reveals large discrepancies between the observed and predicted rotation curves; we argue that rotation curves form a multi-parameter family which is too complex to describe with a simple formula depending on total luminosity only. In earlier papers in this series we determined the intrinsic stellar disc kinematics of 15 intermediate- to late-type edge-on spiral galaxies using a dynamical modelling technique. The sample covers a substantial range in maximum rotation velocity and deprojected face-on surface brightness, and contains seven spirals with either a boxy or peanut-shaped bulge. Here we discuss the structural, kinematical and dynamical properties. From the photometry we find that intrinsically more flattened discs tend to have a lower face-on central surface brightness and a larger dynamical mass-to-light ratio. This observation suggests that, at a constant maximum rotational velocity, lower surface brightness discs have smaller vertical stellar velocity dispersions.Although the individual uncertainties are large, we find from the dynamical modelling that at least 12 discs are submaximal. The average disc contributes 53 +/- 4 per cent to the observed rotation at 2.2 disc scalelengths (h(R)), with a 1 sigma scatter of 15 per cent. This percentage becomes somewhat lower when effects of finite disc flattening and gravity by the dark halo and the gas are taken into account. Since boxy and peanut-shaped bulges are probably associated with bars, the result suggests that at 2.2 h(R) the submaximal nature of discs is independent of barredness. The possibility remains that very high surface brightness discs are maximal, as these discs are underrepresented in our sample. We confirm that the radial stellar disc velocity dispersion is related to the galaxy maximum rotational velocity. The scatter in this sigma versus nu(max) relation appears to correlate with the disc flattening, face-on central surface brightness and dynamical mass-to-light ratio. Low surface brightness discs tend to be more flattened and have smaller stellar velocity dispersions. The findings are consistent with the observed correlation between disc flattening and dynamical mass-to-light ratio and can generally be reproduced by the simple collapse theory for disc galaxy formation. Finally, the disc mass Tully-Fisher relation is offset from the maximum-disc scaled stellar mass Tully-Fisher relation of the Ursa Major cluster. This offset, -0.3 dex in mass, is naturally explained if the discs of the Ursa Major cluster spirals are submaximal.

We study the dynamics of faint stellar substructures around the Umbrella Galaxy, NGC 4651, which hosts a dramatic system of streams and shells formed through the tidal disruption of a nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxy. We elucidate the basic characteristics of the system (colours, luminosities, stellar masses) using multi-band Subaru/Suprime-Cam images. The implied stellar mass-ratio of the ongoing merger event is about 1:50. We identify candidate kinematic tracers (globular clusters, planetary nebulae, H ii regions), and follow up a subset with Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy to obtain velocities. We find that 15 of the tracers are likely associated with halo substructures, including the probable stream progenitor nucleus. These objects delineate a kinematically cold feature in position-velocity phase space. We model the stream using single test-particle orbits, plus a rescaled pre-existing N-body simulation. We infer a very eccentric orbit with a period of roughly 0.35 Gyr and turning points at approximately 2-4 and 40 kpc, implying a recent passage of the satellite through the disc, which may have provoked the visible disturbances in the host galaxy. We present deep GMOS long-slit spectroscopy of 15 Coma cluster S0 galaxies, and extract kinematic properties along the major axis to several times the disc scale-length. Supplementing our dataset with previously published data, we create a combined sample of 29 Coma S0s, as well as a comparison sample of 38 Coma spirals. Using photometry from SDSS and 2MASS, we construct the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR; luminosity versus maximum rotational velocity) for S0 galaxies. At fixed rotational velocity, the Coma S0 galaxies are on average fainter than Coma spirals by 1.10$\pm$0.18, 0.86$\pm$0.19 and 0.83$\pm$0.19 mag in the g, i and Ks bands respectively. The typical S0 offsets remain unchanged when calculated relative to large field-galaxy spiral samples. The observed offsets are consistent with a simple star formation model in which S0s are identical to spirals until abrupt quenching occurs at some intermediate redshift. The offsets form a continuous distribution tracing the time since the cessation of star formation, and exhibit a strong correlation (>6{\sigma}) with residuals from the optical colour-magnitude relation. Typically, S0s which are fainter than average for their rotational velocity are also redder than average for their luminosity. The S0 TFR offset is also correlated with both the projected cluster-centric radius and the {\Sigma} (projected) local density parameter. Since current local environment is correlated with time of accretion into the cluster, our results support a scenario in which transformation of spirals to S0s is triggered by cluster infall., Comment: 36 pages, 29 figures. We present Very Large Array ({\sc vla}) and Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope ({\sc wsrt}) 21-cm H{\sc i} observations of 19 late-type low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies. Our main findings are that these galaxies, as well as having low surface brightnesses, have low H{\sc i} surface densities, about a factor of $\sim 3$ lower than in normal late-type galaxies. We show that LSB galaxies in some respects resemble the outer parts of late-type normal galaxies, but may be less evolved. LSB galaxies are more gas-rich than their high surface brightness counterparts. The rotation curves of LSB galaxies rise more slowly than those of HSB galaxies of the same luminosity, with amplitudes between 50 and 120~km~s$^{-1}$, and are often still increasing at the outermost measured point. The shape of the rotation curves suggests that LSB galaxies have low matter surface densities. We use the average total mass surface density of a galaxy as a measure for the evolutionary state, and show that LSB galaxies are among the least compact, least evolved galaxies. We show that both $M_{\rm HI}/L_B$ and $M_{\rm dyn}/L_B$ depend strongly on central surface brightness, consistent with the surface brightness--mass-to-light ratio relation required by the Tully-Fisher relation. The Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) links the stellar mass of a disk galaxy, $M_{\rm str}$, to its rotation speed: it is well approximated by a power law, shows little scatter, and evolves weakly with redshift. The relation has been interpreted as reflecting the mass-velocity scaling ($M\propto V^3$) of dark matter halos, but this interpretation has been called into question by abundance-matching (AM) models, which predict the galaxy-halo mass relation to be non-monotonic and rapidy evolving. We study the TFR of luminous spirals and its relation to AM using the EAGLE set of $\Lambda$CDM cosmological simulations. Matching both relations requires disk sizes to satisfy constraints given by the concentration of halos and their response to galaxy assembly. EAGLE galaxies approximately match these constraints and show a tight mass-velocity scaling that compares favourably with the observed TFR. The TFR is degenerate to changes in galaxy formation efficiency and the mass-size relation; simulations that fail to match the galaxy stellar mass function may fit the observed TFR if galaxies follow a different mass-size relation. The small scatter in the simulated TFR results because, at fixed halo mass, galaxy mass and rotation speed correlate strongly, scattering galaxies along the main relation.
