Background: Patients may remain dissatisfied after penile prosthesis implantation for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Studies showing the results of standardized protocols for preoperative psychological evaluation are lacking., Purpose: To estimate the rate of patients considered psychologically unfit for penile prosthesis implantation and to compare their characteristics with those considered fit after the implementation of a standardized psychological profile evaluation protocol for men with erectile dysfunction., Methods: Cross-sectional evaluation of men referred for penile prosthesis implantation by their urologists, based on organic causes for the erectile dysfunction, including a semi-structured (sexual and relational anamnesis of the patient and their partner, information about expectations about the results of the penile prosthesis implantation and possible complications) and a structured instrument including validated tools for the evaluation of depression and/or anxiety symptoms. These were the Self Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20), the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey for quality of life, and the Five-Factor Model (FFM) for behavioral tendencies. After at least 3 interviews, the psychology team rated the patients as fit or unfit for surgery. Unfit patients were those with any of a set of warning signals indicating risk for dissatisfaction even after penile implantation., Main Outcome Measure: The prevalence of patients considered "unfit for surgery.", Results: The quality of life scores were good, but 27.6% of patients (95% confidence interval, CI: 16.7-40.9%) were unfit for surgery. Being unfit was associated with obesity (P = .027), anxiety and/or depression symptoms (P < .001) and high levels of neuroticism (P = .001)., Conclusion: The preoperative evaluation protocol combining standardized and validated tools shows that more than one-quarter of patients with a medical indication for penile prosthesis implantation were not in good psychological conditions for the surgery. Aims: While international variations in the prevalence of hypertension are well described, less is known about intra-national disparities and their determinants. We wanted to describe the variations in hypertension prevalence within France and to determine how much lifestyle and socioeconomic factors contributed to explain these regional variations., Methods: Participants (62,247 French adults aged 18 to 69 years) were recruited in the 16 centres of the CONSTANCES study between 2012 and 2015. Hypertension was defined as blood pressure higher than 140/90 mmHg and/or taking antihypertensive medications. The contribution of lifestyle and socioeconomic factors to hypertension prevalence variations among centres was examined using sequential hierarchical logistic models., Results: Hypertension prevalence was 37.3% (95% confidence interval (CI) = 36.6-38.0) in men and 23.2% (95% CI = 22.7-23.8) in women. Hypertension prevalence rates varied by almost two-fold among centres (1.9 in men, 1.6 in women) with the highest prevalence in the north and the east of France. Body mass index was strongly associated with hypertension in women (odds ratio (OR) 1-unit increase  = 1.11 (95% CI = 1.11-1.12)) and was the highest contributor to between-centre variations (27% in women), followed by socioeconomic characteristics (e.g. OR high versus low education  = 0.85 (95% CI = 0.83-0.87), contributing to 14% of variations in women). Together, family history of hypertension, body mass index, education, occupation and residential area socioeconomic level explained about 30% and 40% of between-centre variations in men and women, respectively., Conclusion: Hypertension prevalence greatly varies among French regions and this is partly explained by known lifestyle and socioeconomic factors. Nevertheless, these variations and all the hypertension determinants have not been fully deciphered yet.

During lab-scale experiments on the reforming of methanol by means of water at supercritical conditions (T > 374 degrees C, p > 22.1 MPa), a tubular reactor with a titanium liner was exposed to an aqueous solvent containing methanol (5 wt%) and KHCO3 (0.3 wt%). At the end of the run, a fibrous precipitate was found at two positions in the reactor. The material was studied in a field emission scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray analysis unit (FESEM/EDX). A thin-film support technique using carbon-filmed TEM grids was applied to perform scanning transmission-type imaging (STEM-in-SEM operation) and transmission current measurements. The analysis of the hydrothermally grown fibers resulted in a potassium titanate species composed of approximately K2TiO3, which has been confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD).
