J Strength Cond Res 36(1): 187-192, 2022-This study's purpose was to explore positional differences for an on-ice timed skate test and its relationship to body composition. Male (n = 15) and female (n = 18) collegiate hockey players participated in this study (total n = 33). Each player was categorized by position of forward or defensemen. Dual x-ray absorptiometry assessed total body composition variables of lean, fat, and bone mass as well as regional measures of lean mass, fat mass, and visceral adipose tissue. Total time and section times were determined for the on-ice skating test through a gated automatic timing system at 9, 18, 24, 42, 48, 66, 82, 132, and 148 m. Analysis of variance and Tukey's honest significance difference assessed on-ice skate time differences between positions (p ≤ 0.05). Correlations between body composition variables and skate times were determined for change of direction, skating time, linear skate time, and total skate time. There were no significant differences between positions for skate times (p0.05). Body fat percent (p = 0.007; r = 0.55), total fat mass (p = 0.027; r = 0.46), and leg fat mass (p = 0.019; 0.49) were significantly correlated with total skate time in men, whereas only body fat percent was significantly correlated with change of direction (p = 0.022; r = 0.54) and total skate times (p = 0.016; r = 0.56) in women. The total upper-body mass to leg lean mass ratio was significantly correlated with change of direction (p = 0.036; r = 0.50) in women. In conclusion, the results from this study suggest no differences between on-ice skating times between forwards and defensemen. However, body fat percentage was correlated with on-ice skate times in male and female collegiate hockey players.

Postexercise ingestion of low or high molecular weight glucose polymer solution does not improve cycle performance in female athletes. J Strength Cond Res 35(1): 124-131, 2021-The current study sought to evaluate the effects of postexercise ingestion of a high molecular weight (HMW) glucose polymer solution compared with an isocaloric low molecular weight (LMW) solution or placebo (PLA) on subsequent cycling performance in female athletes. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over design, 10 competitive female cyclists (Mean ± SD; Age = 25.7 ± 5.0 years; V̇o2peak = 49.7 ± 4.3 ml·kg-1·min-1) completed 3 testing sessions separated by 7-10 days. Visits consisted of a ride-to-exhaustion (RTE) at 75% V̇o2peak, followed by immediate consumption of 700 ml containing either: 1.2 g·kg-1 LMW (maltodextrin/dextrose/fructose); 1.2 g·kg-1 HMW (Vitargo); or 0.066 g·kg-1 PLA (noncaloric flavoring). After 2 hours of rest, subjects performed a 15-minute time trial (TT). Respiratory exchange ratio (RER) was assessed via indirect calorimetry during exercise. Total body water (TBW) was measured using bioelectrical impedance to assess fluid balance. When covaried for estrogen, there was no treatment effect on distance (km; p = 0.632) or power output (watts; p = 0.974) during the 15-minute TT. Respiratory exchange ratio was not significantly different during the LMW and HWM TTs (p0.999), but both were significantly higher than PLA (p = 0.039, p = 0.001, respectively). Changes in total body water pre-exercise to postexercise were not significantly different between trials (p = 0.777). Despite benefits of HMW on cycling performance previously reported in males, current results demonstrate no ergogenic effect of HMW or LMW in females. Sex differences in substrate utilization may account for the discrepancy, and further research involving performance nutrition for female athletes is merited.

Objective The aim of this study was to determine whether downstream [peroxisome proliferator-activated-receptor alpha (PPARα) and the G-protein coupled receptor, GPR119] and upstream (a fatty acid translocase, CD36) signaling targets of N-oleoylethanolamide (OEA) were necessary for weight loss, metabolic improvements, and diet preference following vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG). Summary background data OEA is an anorectic N-acylethanolamine produced from dietary fats within the intestinal lumen that can modulate lipid metabolism, insulin secretion, and energy expenditure by activating targets such as PPARα and GPR119. Methods Diet-induced obese mice, including wild-type or whole body knockout (KO) of PPARα, GPR119, and CD36, were stratified to either VSG or sham surgery before body weight, body composition, diet preference, and glucose and lipid metabolic endpoints were assessed. Results We found increased duodenal production of OEA and expression of both GPR119 and CD36 were upregulated in wild-type mice after VSG. However, weight loss and glucose tolerance were improved in response to VSG in PPARαKO, GPR119KO, and CD36KO mice. In fact, VSG corrected hepatic triglyceride dysregulation in CD36KO mice, and circulating triglyceride and cholesterol levels in PPARαKO mice. Lastly, we found PPARα-mediated signaling contributes to macronutrient preference independent of VSG, while removal of CD36 signaling blunts the VSG-induced shift toward carbohydrate preference. Conclusions In the search for more effective and less invasive therapies to help reverse the global acceleration of obesity and obesity-related disease OEA is a promising candidate; however, our data indicate that it is not an underlying mechanism of the effectiveness of VSG.

The primary purpose was to identify the relationship between muscle cross sectional area (mCSA), echo intensity (EI), and body composition of Division I cross-country runners. The secondary purpose was to examine differences in these variables in athletes stratified based on stress fracture (SFx) history. Thirty-six athletes were stratified based on sex and previous SFx history. A panoramic scan vastus lateralis (VL) was performed using a GE logiq-e B-mode ultrasound (US). Echo intensity and mCSA were determined from the scan by using a grayscale imaging software (Image-J). Body composition measures were determined using dual-energy xray absorptiometry (DEXA). For females, mCSA was significantly correlated with left leg lean mass (LM; R=0.54) and EI (R= −0.57). Lean mass was significantly correlated with bone mineral density (BMD; R=0.58) and content (BMC; R=0.56), while BMC was also correlated with leg LM (R=0.72). For males, mCSA was significantly correlated with leg LM (R=0.66), BMD (R=0.50), and BMC (R=0.54). Leg LM was significantly correlated with BMD (R=0.53) and BMC (R=0.77). Personal best times for males were significantly correlated with FM (R=0.489) and %fat (R=0.556) for the 10 kilometer and 5 kilometer races, respectively. Female and male athletes with previous history of SFx were not significantly different across any variables when compared to athletes with no previous history. These correlations suggest more muscle mass may associate with higher BMD and BMC for stronger bone structure. Modifications in training strategies to include heavy resistance training and plyometrics may be advantageous for preventing risk factors associated with stress fracture reoccurrence.

Background— Neutrophils may be an important source of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), two matrix-degrading enzymes thought to be critical in the formation of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The purpose of this investigation was to test the hypothesis that neutrophil depletion would limit experimental AAA formation by altering one or both of these enzymes. Methods and Results— Control, rabbit serum–treated (RS; n=27) or anti-neutrophil-antibody–treated (anti-PMN; n=25) C57BL/6 mice underwent aortic elastase perfusion to induce experimental aneurysms. Anti-PMN–treated mice became neutropenic (mean, 349 cells/μL), experiencing an 84% decrease in the circulating absolute neutrophil count ( P P P =0.02) and macrophages (6.1 versus 2.1 cells per 5 HPFs, P =0.005) as compared with anti-PMN–treated mice. There were no differences in monocyte chemotactic protein-1 or macrophage inflammatory protein-1α chemokine levels between groups by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Neutrophil collagenase (MMP-8) expression was detected only in the 14-day control mice, with increased MMP-8 protein levels by Western blotting ( P =0.017), and MMP-8–positive neutrophils were seen almost exclusively in this group. Conversely, there were no statistical differences in MMP-2 or MMP-9 mRNA expression, protein levels, enzyme activity, or immunostaining patterns between groups. When C57BL/6 wild-type (n=15) and MMP-8–deficient mice (n=17) were subjected to elastase perfusion, however, ADs at 14 days were no different in size (134±7.9% versus 154±9.9%; P =0.603), which suggests that MMP-8 serves only as a marker for the presence of neutrophils and is not critical for AAA formation. Conclusions— Circulating neutrophils are an important initial component of experimental AAA formation. Neutrophil depletion inhibits AAA development through a non–MMP-2/9–mediated mechanism associated with attenuated inflammatory cell recruitment.

Background— This investigation tested the hypothesis that L-selectin is important in experimental abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) formation in rodents. Methods and Results— Rat abdominal aortas were perfused with saline (control) or porcine pancreatic elastase and studied on postperfusion days 1, 2, 4, 7, and 14 (n=5 per treatment group per day). Neutrophil (polymorphonucleur leukocyte, PMN) and macrophage counts per high-powered field (HPF) were performed on fixed sections. L-selectin expression and protein levels in aortic tissue were determined by polymerase chain reaction and Western blot, respectively. Elastase-perfused aortic diameters were significantly increased compared with control aortas at all time points except day 1 ( P P =0.001). L-selectin mRNA expression in elastase-perfused aortas was 18 ( P =0.018), 17 ( P P =0.02) times greater than control aortas at days 1, 2, and 4, respectively. Western blot demonstrated a significant 69% increase in L-selectin protein at day 7 in elastase- as compared with saline-perfused aortas ( P =0.005). Subsequent experiments involved similar studies on postperfusion days 4, 7, and 14 of aortas from C57BL/6 wild-type (WT) mice (n=21) and L-selectin–knockout (LKO) mice (n=19). LKO mice had significantly smaller aortic diameters at day 14 as compared with WT mice (88% versus 123%, P =0.02). PMN counts were significantly greater in elastase-perfused WT mouse aortas as compared with LKO mouse aortas at day 4 after perfusion (12.8 versus 4.8 PMNs/HPF, P =0.02). Macrophage counts were significantly greater at all time points after perfusion in elastase-perfused WT mouse aortas compared with elastase-perfused LKO mouse aortas, with a maximum difference at day 7 after perfusion (13.3 versus 0.5 macrophages/HPF, P Conclusion— L-selectin–mediated neutrophil recruitment may be a critical early step in AAA formation.

Item does not contain fulltext The importance of maternal smoking in the pathogenesis of oral facial clefts is not clear. Susceptibility to cigarette smoke depends on biotransformation of the toxic compounds by mother and embryo. In a population-based case-control study, we investigated the effects of maternal smoking during the first pregnancy trimester and the interaction with polymorphisms in the biotransformation enzymes cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) and glutathione S-transferase theta 1-1 (GSTT1) on the risk of nonsyndromic oral clefting in the offspring. We recruited 113 infants with nonsyndromic oral clefts and their mothers, as well as 104 control infants and their mothers. Maternal smoking habits were collected regarding the period 3 months before through 3 months after conception. Buccal swabs were taken from mothers and infants for genetic analysis. Maternal smoking was not strongly associated with oral clefting (odds ratio = 1.1; 95% confidence interval = 0.6-2.2), nor were CYP1A1 and GSTT1 polymorphisms. Mothers who smoked and carried the GSTT1-null genotype, however, had an increased risk for having a child with oral clefting compared with nonsmokers with the wild type genotype (odds ratio = 3.2; 95% confidence interval = 0.9-11.6). The risk was almost five times greater (odds ratio = 4.9; 95% confidence interval = 0.7-36.9) in mothers and infants both having the GSTT1-null genotype compared with both having the wild genotype. There was no interaction between CYP1A1 and maternal smoking in relation to oral clefting.
