Recent work on the photoluminescent behaviour of Pr3+ and Tb3+ selenide glasses and fibers, under different pumping regimes, is described. Key reasons are presented on why mid-infrared fiber lasing has not been achieved to date.

We demonstrate an M-type fiber suitable for launching higher-order-modes (such as LP 02 LP 03 ) as core-confined-modes, while guiding LP 01 and other lower-order-modes in a ring. The M-type fiber can shift the zero-dispersion-wavelength of bulk-material by several 1000 nanometers.

Supercontinuum generation covering an ultra-broad spectrum from 1.5-11.7μm and 1.4-13.3μm is experimentally demonstrated by pumping an 85mm chalcogenide step-index fiber with 100fs pulses at a wavelength of 4.5μm and 6.3μm, respectively.

We apply an integral equations method to simulate the scattering of light from finite sets of arbitrary nano-rods. The effect of the rods shape and their electromagnetic interaction is studied with high and controllable accuracy.

The structure related finite difference beam propagation method is applied to optical waveguide couplers. The method matches the local structure geometry, yielding accurate analysis with coarser meshes than standard schemes with significant computational resource savings.

A full-vectorial integral equation analysis of the natural modes of dielectric waveguides of arbitrary cross-section is presented. Sample numerical results consistent with other theories and experimental data are given for circular and rectangular waveguides.

Deformed WGM cylindrical dielectric resonators show advantages for integration into optical circuits. The mechanism of WG-modes destruction due to increasing deformation magnitude is analyzed using an efficient algorithm based on the concept of analytical regularization.

Porous silicon offers many potential advantages for the realisation of optoelectronic circuits and systems. Foremost is the demonstration of photoluminescence [1] and solid state electroluminescent devices [2,3] which, when married with silicon based photodetectors and the well established electronic fabrication processes, has opened up the possibility for the realisation of monolithic all-silicon optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEIC’s). Another important feature is the ability to selectively produce insulating regions in CMOS circuitry by converting the porous silicon to silicon dioxide by oxidation. Oxidation of porous silicon also provides a new route to the realisation of the basic building block for all optoelectronic circuits - the optical waveguide.

Semiconductor waveguides are widely used in the field of integrated optics as the basis of active and passive devices. Since no analytical solution to the wave equation is available for rib, ridge or strip loaded structures many modelling techniques have been developed to analyze the guiding properties of these structures. These methods vary considerably in accuracy and ease of application. This paper considers two of these analysis methods, the Finite Difference (FD) Method and the Spectral Index (SI) Method, and notes that both approaches can be extended for use in the complex case ie when the local refractive index of the waveguide cross-section may become complex due to the presence of loss or gain. This gives rise to a complex propagation constant. Complex propagation constants obtained from the FD and SI methods are compared for the first time.
