We describe component and module performances of our silicon based photonic integrated circuits developed for 100G to 400G coherent transponders.

We demonstrate a monolithic silicon photonics integrated circuit that contains all the optics for a 100-Gb/s coherent transceiver, except the laser. Co-packaged with linear drivers and transimpedance amplifiers, the 27 x 35.5 mm2 module consumes only 4.5W.

Generation of high-peak-power ultrashort optical pulses from 1.5-μm laser diodes (LDs) has been an important research subject for applications to ultrahigh-bit-rate optical communications, such as soliton transmission and all-optical fiber demultiplexers.1,2 We have used a two-stage Er+3-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) to amplify low-power, highly chirped gain-switched pulses for such applications. When an optical bandpass filter (OBF) is placed between the first- and second-stage EDF As and its transmission bandwidth is reduced to narrower than the spectral width of the original gain-switched LD pulses, it induces a spectral-windowing effect that eventually provides a pulse-compression effect.3
