Multiphoton contributions pose a significant challenge for the realisation of heralded single-photon sources (HSPS) based on nonlinear processes. In this work, we improve the quality of single photons generated in this way by harnessing the photon-number resolving (PNR) capabilities of commercial superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs). We report a 13 ± 0.4% reduction of g (2) (τ = 0), even with a collection efficiency in the photon source of only 29.6%. Our work demonstrates the first application of the PNR capabilities of SNSPDs and shows improvement in the quality of an HSPS with widely available technology.

Spatially resolved interference is observed between high-order harmonics generated in two longitudinally separated gas targets. High-contrast modulations in the intensity of each harmonic order up to the cutoff are observed on-axis in the far field of the source as the separation between the gas targets is increased. For low-order harmonics, additional off-axis modulations are observed, which are attributed to the interference between the contributions from the long quantum trajectories from each gas target. The inherent synchronization of this setup offers the prospect for high-stability metrology of quantum states with ultrafast temporal resolutions.

We present a new apparatus for converting between spectral and temporal representation of optical information, designed for operating with pulsed light sources. Every input pulse is converted into a pulse train in which the pulse intensities represent the spatial or temporal frequency spectrum of the original pulse. This method enables spectral measurements to be performed by following the temporal response of a single detector and, thus, is useful for real-time spectroscopy and imaging, and for spectral correlation measurements. The apparatus is based on multiple round-trips inside a 2f-cavity-like mirror arrangement in which the spectrum is spread on the back focal plane, and a small section of it is allowed to escape after each round-trip. Unlike existing methods, it relies neither on fibers nor on interference effects. It offers easy wavelength range tunability, and a prototype built achieves over 10% average efficiency in the near infrared (NIR). We demonstrate the application of the prototype for an efficient measurement of the joint spectrum of a non-degenerate bi-photon source in which one of the photons is in the NIR.

We introduce a novel time-frequency quantum key distribution (TFQKD) scheme based on photon pairs entangled in these two conjugate degrees of freedom. The scheme uses spectral detection and phase modulation to enable measurements in the temporal basis by means of time-to-frequency conversion. This allows large-alphabet encoding to be implemented with realistic components. A general security analysis for TFQKD with binned measurements reveals a close connection with finite-dimensional QKD protocols and enables analysis of the effects of dark counts on the secure key size.

The interference between the emission originating from the short and long electron quantum paths is intrinsic to the high harmonic generation process. We investigate the universal properties of these quantum-path interferences in various generation media and discuss how ionization effects influence the observed interference structures. Our comparison of quantum-path interferences observed in xenon, argon, and neon demonstrates that our experimental tools are generally applicable and should also allow investigating more complex systems such as molecules or clusters.

A nonclassical light source is used to demonstrate experimentally the absolute efficiency calibration of a photon-number-resolving detector. The photon-pair detector calibration method developed by Klyshko for single-photon detectors is generalized to take advantage of the higher dynamic range and additional information provided by photon-number-resolving detectors. This enables the use of brighter twin-beam sources including amplified pulse pumped sources, which increases the relevant signal and provides measurement redundancy, making the calibration more robust., ((c) 2009 Optical Society of America)

A new spectral shearing interferometry technique for ultrashort pulse characterization is demonstrated. The method makes use of a spectral shear that varies across the test pulse beam profile to generate a two-dimensional interferogram that allows simultaneous reference phase measurement and pulse-field reconstruction from a single data set. The method uses a new configuration for upconversion of a single (non-spatially chirped) test pulse with two spatially chirped ancillary pulses in a medium with a highly asymmetric phase matching function. This technique is particularly suited for spectral regions where second harmonic is much easier detectable that the fundamental wavelength, such as telecom band around 1.5 μm, since all the data are available from the measurement at the upconverted wavelength. The high degree of redundancy in the two-dimensional interferogram provides a built-in check of the consistency of the reconstruction.

We report the complete spatiotemporal characterization of ultrashort light pulses by use of a self-referencing device based on shearing interferometry in the space and frequency domains. The apparatus combines a spatially resolved spectral shearing interferometer with a spectrally resolved spatial shearing interferometer. The electric field as a function of one transverse spatial coordinate and time is obtained from a single experimental trace by means of a direct and fast algebraic phase reconstruction algorithm. The method has been tested in several common laboratory situations.

We study and demonstrate a version of spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction (SPIDER) that uses self-referencing homodyne detection. This technique has a higher sensitivity than conventional SPIDER, is self-calibrating, and can be adjusted for a wider range of pulse parameters.

We report the observation of correlated photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric downconversion of a 400-nm pump pulse in a quasi-phase-matched KTiOPO(4) nonlinear waveguide. The highest ratio of coincidence to single-photon count rates observed near 800 nm exceeds 18%. This suggests that nonlinear waveguides will be a promising source of correlated photons for metrology and quantum information processing applications. We also discuss possibilities of controlling the spatial characteristics of the downconverted photons produced in multimode waveguide structures.

We present the results of a direct measurement of the temporal response of a terahertz (THz) photoconductive receiver obtained by dithered-edge sampling. The receiver response has structure that accounts for the negative-going leading edge of the pulse shape that is often seen in measurements made with these receivers in a conventional sampling arrangement. We show that the THz pulse shape measured by conventional photoconductive sampling is indeed a cross correlation of the pulse with the measured receiver's response.

We present an implementation of spectral phase interferometry for direct electric-field reconstruction (SPIDER) which characterizes ultrashort optical pulses in the spectral or temporal domain at a rate of 20 Hz. This apparatus was used in real-time as a diagnostic tool to optimize our 1 kHz regeneratively amplified laser system for the shortest duration pulses.

We present a novel, self-referencing interferometric technique for measuring the amplitude and the phase of ultrashort optical pulses. The apparatus uses a collinear geometry that requires no moving components. The phase-retrieval procedure is noniterative and rapid and uses only two one-dimensional Fourier transforms. We apply the technique to characterize ultrashort pulses from a mode-locked Ti:sapphire oscillator.

The space-shift-variant two-point correlation function of a transversely spatially localized optical field of arbitrary coherence at a remote plane is measured with a novel interferometric technique. The method permits reconstruction of the correlation function by a simple resorting of the measured data. In the case of a coherent field the experimentally measured correlation function is shown to factorize, as expected, and the field amplitude and phase are also reconstructed.

An electro-optic phase modulator in a regenerative mode-locker configuration is demonstrated as the starting mechanism for a Kerr-lens mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. Mode locking is initiated automatically, and the system is capable of pulses as short as 21 fs.

We formulate the first-order properties of a general two-beam interferometer. We show that it may be completely described by the light source position and the location, orientation, and size of the two images of this light source as seen from the observation plane, plus the image-plane position and the location, orientation, and size of the two images of this observation screen as seen from the light source position, plus the optical path difference between the two possible optical paths. The parameters are quite similar to those previously defined by Steel [W. H. Steel, Interferometry, 2nd ed. (Cambridge U. Press, New York, 1983)].
