Two-dimensional (2D) bismuthene can find its wide potential applications due to its appealing optical and electronic properties. Especially, bismuthene exhibits layer-count dependent direct bandgaps and strong light-matter interaction, enabling its applications in all-optical signal processing area that can overcome the bottle-neck in existing electrical signal processing. However, light-bismuthene interaction based on main stream optical fiber systems and its application in all-optical signal processing is relatively less investigated. In this work, few-layer bismuthene, synthesized with facile solution processing method, is coated onto a piece of microfiber. The experimental results show that this device can operate as an optical Kerr switcher and a four-wave-mixing-based wavelength converter under different configuration. The results including wavelength applicability, information bandwidth, eye diagrams in combination with bit-error rate (BER) performance and stability measurements confirm its feasibility in optical fiber systems. To the best of our knowledge, it is first prototypic device reported in this work for bismuthene in all-optical signal processing optical fiber systems.

We report on the optical saturable absorption of few-layer black phosphorus nanoflakes and demonstrate its application for the generation of vector solitons in an erbium-doped fiber laser. By incorporating the black phosphorus nanoflakes-based saturable absorber (SA) into an all-fiber erbium-doped fiber laser cavity, we are able to obtain passive mode-locking operation with soliton pulses down to ~670 fs. The properties and dynamics of the as-generated vector solitons are experimentally investigated. Our results show that BP nanoflakes could be developed as an effective SA for ultrashort pulse fiber lasers, particularly for the generation of vector soliton pulses in fiber lasers.

We report on the formation of induced dark solitary pulses in a net anomalous dispersion cavity fiber laser. In a weak birefringence cavity fiber laser simultaneous laser oscillation along the two orthogonal polarization directions of the cavity could be achieved. Under suitable conditions bright cavity solitons could be formed along one polarization direction while CW emission occurs along the orthogonal polarization direction. In a previous paper we have shown that under incoherent polarization coupling a bright soliton always induces a broad dark pulse on the CW beam. In the paper we further show that under coherent polarization coupling a bright soliton could further induce either a weak bright or a dark solitary pulse on the bottom of the broad dark pulse. Numerical simulations have also well reproduced the experimental observations, and further show whether a weak dark or bright solitary pulse is induced is determined by the presence or absence of a phase jump in the induced pulse.

We report on the experimental observation of soliton-dark pulse pair formation in a birefringent cavity fiber laser. Temporal cavity solitons are formed in one polarization mode of the cavity. It is observed that associated with each of the cavity solitons a dark pulse is induced on the CW background of the orthogonal polarization mode. We show that the dark pulse formation is a result of the incoherent cross polarization coupling between the soliton and the CW beam and has a mechanism similar to that of the polarization domain formation observed in the fiber lasers.

Dark soliton formation and soliton dynamics in all-normal dispersion cavity fiber ring lasers without an anti-saturable absorber in cavity is studied both theoretically and numerically. It is shown that under suitable conditions the dark solitons formed could be described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The dark soliton formation in an all-normal-dispersion cavity erbium-doped fiber ring laser without an anti-saturable absorber in cavity is first experimentally demonstrated. Individual dark solitons are experimentally identified. Excellent agreement between theory and experiment is observed.

We show analytically and numerically that a practically realizable first-order optical Hilbert transformer (OHT) can simultaneously function as a negative/positive first-order temporal optical differentiator (OD) in the stopband and a broadband ±90° phase shifter in the passbands. An integrated-optic OHT based on a four-tap finite impulse response filter is designed using the Remez iteration algorithm and is numerically verified.

Inverse-Gaussian apodized fiber Bragg gratings (IGAFBGs) are numerically studied using the transfer matrix method and fabricated by the commonly used phase-mask scanning technique in a single-step scanning process. The IGAFBG can serve as a dual-wavelength passband filter, whose wavelength spacing can be continuously tuned by introducing a tunable chirp through applying a strain gradient in principle. Also, an IGAFBG with identical dual passbands having 0.144nm wavelength spacing is experimentally achieved. We also show that an IGAFBG can act as a multipassband filter with varied free spectral ranges (FSRs), and the largest FSR variation of this IGAFBG is nearly seven times more than that in a comparable FBG pair filter. An IGAFBG with varied FSRs of approximately 16.125, approximately 12.25, approximately 8.5, and approximately 6.375GHz is fabricated. This multipassband varying-FSR IGAFBG filter can find applications in step-tunable microwave generations.
