Fields with frequencies below megahertz are challenging for Rydberg-atom-based measurements, due to the low-frequency electric field screening effect caused by the alkali-metal atoms adsorbed on the inner surface of the container. In this paper, we investigate electric field measurements in the ultralow frequency (ULF), very low frequency (VLF), and low frequency (LF) bands in a Cs vapor cell with built-in parallel electrodes. With optimization of the applied DC field, we achieve high-sensitive detection of the electric field at frequencies of 1 kHz, 10 kHz, and 100 kHz based on the Rydberg-atom sensor, with the minimum electric field strength down to 18.0 μV/cm, 6.9 μV/cm, and 3.0 μV/cm, respectively. The corresponding sensitivity is 5.7 μV/cm/Hz 1/2 , 2.2 μV/cm/Hz 1/2 , and 0.95 μV/cm/Hz 1/2 for the ULF, VLF, and LF fields, which is better than a 1-cm dipole antenna. Besides, the linear dynamic range of the Rydberg-atom sensor is over 50 dB. This work presents the potential to enable more applications that utilize atomic sensing technology in the ULF, VLF, and LF fields.

Outdoor long-range terahertz (THz) communications often come at the expense of transmission rate. Moreover, the practicability of the single polarization optical/THz link, which is commonly used in the previous long-range THz demonstrations based on photonics, is extremely limited by the following two fatal defects. One is relying on active polarization control, and the other is not supporting the transparent bridging of optical polarization division multiplexed (PDM) signals for mature coherent optical communication networks. In this work, a large-capacity photonics-aided THz wireless communication system based on the outdoor long-range 2 × 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) links has been successfully demonstrated. We first build the 200-m 2 × 2 MIMO THz wireless links at the 300 GHz band. The cascaded linear and nonlinear equalizers are proposed which can significantly improve the transmission performance of 100- and 200-Gb/s PDM quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signals. Then an interesting 2 × 2 MIMO structure which can provide certain diversity reception gain under 200-m long-range wireless delivery using the same polarization scheme is also presented and further compared with the orthogonal polarization scheme. Since each THz receiver simultaneously receives data from both the two THz transmitters for this MIMO links, an improvement over 6 dB in receiving sensitivity and one order of magnitude in bit error ratio performance under low signal-to-noise ratio conditions can be achieved. Finally, based on the proposed cascaded equalizers and novel 2 × 2 MIMO structure, we successfully demonstrate a record-breaking 58-Gbaud (232-Gb/s) PDM-QPSK signal transmission over 200-m 2 × 2 MIMO THz wireless links. This is an important attempt for the photonics-aided THz wireless communication systems to achieve 2 × 2 MIMO transmission over a long wireless distance in the outdoors. Furthermore, attaining over 200 Gb/s at a wireless distance of 200 m also represents a key milestone for the long-range and large-capacity THz wireless communication systems.

We successfully demonstrate photonics-assisted single-carrier 466.4 Gbit/s wireless transmission over 20 km SSMF and 6 m single-input single-output (SISO) wireless delivery at 92.5 GHz. This is achieved by employing a likelihood-aware vector-quantized variational autoencoder (VQ-VAE) equalizer for polarization demultiplexing and an advanced multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Volterra nonlinear equalizer (MIMO-VNE) further to compensate linear and nonlinear crosstalk between two polarizations. The capacity and robustness of the fiber-wireless system are extensively investigated, verifying that our proposed VQ-VAE with shared-layer autoencoder (SLAE) model outperforms state-of-the-art blind equalizers such as those based on constant modulus algorithm (CMA), VAE, and VQ-VAE algorithms. Additionally, the dual-polarized 40 Gbaud PCS-64QAM signal achieves a 2 dB power margin while meeting the 0.83 NGMI threshold, and a 0.05 gain in NGMI compared to traditional methods. This low-complexity training framework paves the way for enhancing wireless air interface capacities to approach those of fiber-optic transmission within fiber-wireless integration systems.

The unique physical and chemical properties make metallic nanoparticles promising for broad applications in many fields. Exploring the dynamics of metallic nanoparticles in optical traps is crucial for exploiting optical tweezers to advance the applications of metallic particles. In this paper, we present a detailed study of the annular optical trapping of gold nanoparticles with azimuthal polarization. Theoretical analysis based on the T-matrix method shows that the gold nanoparticles experience optical forces pointing to the equilibrium position along the radial direction, while there is no force along the azimuthal direction at this equilibrium position. Therefore, a tightly focused azimuthally polarized beam captures gold nanoparticles in an annular region. Experimental measurements of the motion trajectory of the confined gold nanoparticles reveal a donut profile consistent with the theoretical predictions. Our work reported in this paper is expected to deepen our understanding of the interactions between metallic nanoparticles and light and promote the application of metallic nanoparticles.

Extensive studies have demonstrated the diverse impacts of electromagnetic waves at gigahertz and terahertz (THz) frequencies on cytoplasmic membrane properties. However, there is little evidence of these impacts on intracellular membranes, particularly mitochondrial membranes crucial for mitochondrial physiology. In this study, human neuroblast-like cells were exposed to continuous 0.1 THz radiation at an average power density of 33 mW/cm 2 . The analysis revealed that THz exposure significantly altered the mitochondrial ultrastructure. THz waves enhanced the enzymatic activity of the mitochondrial respiratory chain but disrupted supercomplex assembly, compromising mitochondrial respiration. Molecular dynamics simulations revealed altered rates of change in the quantity of hydrogen bonds and infiltration of water molecules in lipid bilayers containing cardiolipin, indicating the specific behavior of cardiolipin, a signature phospholipid in mitochondria, under THz exposure. In this Letter, we propose a novel, to the best of our knowledge, adaptive feedback-driven probabilistic constellation-shaping (FBD-PCS) method based on the robustness evaluation criteria and employ variational autoencoder (VAE)-based equalizers to implement polarization demultiplexing and nonlinear equalization for the recovery of high-order PCS-QAM signals. We experimentally demonstrate the fiber-THz 2 times 2 MIMO system with a net rate of 366.4 Gbit/s using dual-polarization 40 Gbaud PCS-64QAM signal over a 20 km SSMF and 6 m wireless link. Specifically, the feedback mechanism drives the fiber-THz system to solve optimization problems, adaptively matching the optimized distribution of transmitted symbols that maximizes normalized generalized mutual information (NGMI). We also examine six scenarios to explore nonlinear resistances of FBD-PCS symbols and the robustness of VAE-based equalizers. The results demonstrate the superiority of FBD-PCS over the Maxwell-Boltzmann (M-B) distributions in practical nonlinear-dominant systems. Additionally, the FBD-PCS signals can break limitations for ultrahigh rate transmission with the help of advanced equalizers.

This Letter demonstrates a novel, to the best of knowledge, overlapping single-sideband (OSSB) transmission scheme for spectrally efficient multi-service fiber-wireless (FiWi) access in a low-cost direct-detection (DD) THz system. Utilizing the proposed OSSB scheme, user data from different services can share the same spectrum resource yet can be successfully demodulated via one cost-effective DD THz receiver in conjunction with the Kramers-Kronig (KK) based SSB field reconstruction and look-up table (LUT) enabled signal separation algorithms. A proof-of-principle experiment is conducted. Based on an IQ modulator and a single THz zero-bias diode (ZBD), two independent 10-GBd quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signals with an overlapped spectrum are successfully demodulated after 20-km fiber and up to 3-m wireless transmission at the 300-GHz band. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of multi-service FiWi access with an OSSB format in a 300-GHz DD THz system.

Metallic microparticles larger than the illumination wavelength are commonly considered poor optical trapping candidates due to their high extinction coefficient. This paper presents a numerical and experimental study on the three-dimensional (3D) trapping of gold microparticles using a centrally obstructed Gaussian beam based on the T-matrix method. The range of particle size for stable optical trapping is determined. For the trapping numerical aperture of 1.32 and illumination wavelength of 1.064 µm, numerical analysis proves that 3D trapping of gold microparticles with a radius bigger than 1.0 µm can be readily achieved. By imprinting a digital lens to the spatial light modulator, we slightly defocus the centrally obstructed Gaussian beam to shift the trapping location to the focal plane for clear observation. Experimental results demonstrate stable trapping of gold microparticles with a radius greater than 1.4 µm at high-power illumination, agreeing well with the theoretical predictions. The presented work should be of interest to the community applying metallic microparticles to relevant research.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate an intelligent nonlinear compensation method using a stacked autoencoder (SAE) model in conjunction with principal component analysis (PCA) technology and a bidirectional long-short-term memory coupled with ANN (BiLSTM-ANN) nonlinear equalizer for an end-to-end (E2E) fiber-wireless integrated system. The SAE-optimized nonlinear constellation is utilized to mitigate nonlinearity during the optical and electrical conversion process. Our proposed BiLSTM-ANN equalizer is primarily based on time memory and information extraction characteristics, which can compensate for the remaining nonlinear redundancy. A low-complexity 50 Gbps E2E-optimized nonlinear 32 QAM signal is successfully transmitted over a span of 20 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) and 6 m wireless link at 92.5 GHz. The extended experimental results indicate that the proposed E2E system can achieve a reduction of up to 78% in BER and a gain in receiver sensitivity of over 0.7 dB at BER of 3.8 × 10 -3 . Moreover, computational complexity is reduced by more than 10 times compared to the classical training model.

Holographic optical tweezers (HOTs) use spatial light modulators (SLM) to modulate light beams, thereby enabling the dynamic control of optical trap arrays with complex intensity and phase distributions. This has provided exciting new opportunities for cell sorting, microstructure machining, and studying single molecules. However, the pixelated structure of the SLM will inevitably bring up the unmodulated zero-order diffraction possessing an unacceptably large fraction of the incident light beam power. This is harmful to optical trapping because of the bright, highly localized nature of the errant beam. In this paper and to address this issue, we construct a cost-effective, zero-order free HOTs apparatus, thanks to a homemade asymmetric triangle reflector and a digital lens. As there is no zero-order diffraction, the instrument performs excellently in generating complex light fields and manipulating particles.

This Letter demonstrates a real-time 100-GbE fiber-wireless seamless integration system operating at the whole W band (75-110 GHz). Based on a pair of commercial digital coherent optical modules, the real-time transparent transmission of 125-Gb/s dual-polarized quadrature phase-shift keying signal has been successfully achieved over two-spans of 20-km fiber and up to 150-m electromagnetic dual-polarized single-input single-output wireless link. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first real-time demonstration of 100-GbE signal transmission over >100-m wireless distance at the millimeter-wave band based on photonics. We believed this real-time and high-speed fiber-wireless seamless integration system with a wireless coverage up to hundreds of meters can significantly accelerate the progress of upcoming 6G.

The evolution of mobile communications towards millimeter-wave (mmW) bands provides a strong opportunity for the seamless integration of radar and wireless communications. We present a photonics-aided mmW integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system constructed by photonic up-conversion using a coherent optical frequency comb, which facilitates zero frequency offset of the resulting mmW signal. The sensing and communications functions are enabled by a joint waveform that encodes a DC-offset QPSK signal on a linear frequency-modulated continuous wave (LFMCW) in baseband. The QPSK encoding ensures the constant envelope of the mmW ISAC signal for long-distance radar detection. The optimized DC offset preserves the distinctive chirp phase and good cross-correlation of the original LFMCW, which can achieve high-resolution sensing by radar de-chirping and assist in communication sequence synchronization by pulse compression, respectively. Experimental results show that the single-user detection with less than 20-mm sensing error and dual-user detection with a 10.4-cm ranging resolution are realized at 28-GHz band, respectively. The wireless communication with a 11.5-Gbit/s transmission rate also at 28-GHz band is successfully tested. Moreover, the proof-of-concept experiments demonstrate the good frequency tunability and wavelength tolerance of the proposed ISAC system.

The macrolens array is generally used in the large-format integral imaging display system, and the position error of the lens will affect the result of the integral imaging display. In this paper, the average value and variance of the distances from the distributed reconstructed points to their ideal points are used to measure the size of the position error, and the performance of the measurement methods is discussed. The one-to-one relationship of the pixels of the elemental image under the ideal case and the position error are analyzed, and the corresponding correction methods of these position errors are analyzed. Then the pixels are rearranged to compensate for the position error, thereby alleviating the influence of the microlens array's (MALA's) position error on the imaging quality, which is verified by theoretical simulation and experimental results.

Room-temperature polariton lasing is achieved in GaN microrods grown by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. We demonstrate a large Rabi splitting (Ω = 2g 0 ) up to 162 meV, exceeding the results from both the state-of-the-art nitride-based planar microcavities and previously reported GaN microrods. An ultra-low threshold of 1.8 kW/cm 2 is observed by power-dependent photoluminescence spectra, with the linewidth down to 1.31 meV and the blue shift up to 17.8 meV. This large Rabi splitting distinguishes our coherent light emission from a conventional photon lasing, which strongly supports the preparation of coherent light sources in integrated optical circuits and the study of exciting phenomena in macroscopic quantum states.

In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate the first real-time transparent fiber-THz-fiber 2 × 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission system with a record line rate of 125.516 Gbps at 360-430 GHz based on photonic remote heterodyning, hybrid optoelectronic down-conversion, and commercial digital coherent modules. The 103.125-Gbps net data rate using dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying (DP-QPSK) modulation is successfully transmitted over two spans of 20-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) and 60-cm wireless distance under 15% soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) for a pre-FEC bit error ratio (BER) threshold of 1.56 × 10 -2 (post-FEC BER < 10 -15 ). The optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) margin and the stability of the transmission system are extensively investigated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to realize >100-Gbps real-time transparent fiber-THz-fiber link transmission at beyond the 350-GHz band, making it a promising scheme to pave the way towards a practical seamless integration of a fiber-THz-fiber link to the future 6G mobile communication system.

The electrical-to-optical power conversion efficiencies of the light-emitting devices based on gallium nitride (GaN) are seriously limited by electron leakage currents due to the relatively low mobility and activation ratio of holes. However, there have been few theoretical models on the behavior of the leakage current with an increasing total current. We develop an Ohmic-law-like method to describe the transport behaviors of the systems with electron and hole currents simultaneously. Based on reasonable assumptions, the ratio of the leakage current to the total current is related to the differential resistances of the devices. Through the method, we develop analytical models of the leakage currents in GaN-based laser diodes (LDs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The ratios of the leakage currents with total currents in LDs and LEDs are shown to increase, which explains the sublinear behaviors of the luminescence-current (LI) curves of the devices. The theory agrees well with the numerical simulation and experimental results in larger current ranges in comparison to the traditional ABC model. The above analytical model can be used to fast evaluate the leakage currents in GaN-based LDs and LEDs.

We investigate the exciton polaritons and their corresponding optical modes in a hexagonal GaN microrod at room temperature. The dispersion curves are measured by the angle-resolved micro-photoluminescence spectrometer, and two types of exciton polaritons are identified with the help of the finite-difference time-domain simulation. By changing the pump position, the photon part of the exciton polaritons is found to switch between the quasi-whispering gallery modes and the two-round quasi-whispering gallery modes. The exciton polaritons formed by the latter are observed and distinguished for the first time, with a giant Rabi splitting as large as 2Ω = 230.3 meV.

Yttrium oxide (Y 2 O 3 ) has garnered some attention in view of its potential to be integrated into a wide range of high-strength structural components, microelectronic and optoelectronic devices. However, the nonlinear optical research of this promising material has not been implemented yet. In this paper, not only the electronic band structures of Y 2 O 3 are theoretically calculated but also the optical nonlinearity of Y 2 O 3 is validated by using the fiber laser as a platform. Meanwhile, the influence of sample thickness on laser performance is further explored by using Y 2 O 3 saturable absorbers with different thickness. Results indicate that Y 2 O 3 not only has impressive optical nonlinearity but also is beneficial to the investigation of ultrafast photons by adjusting the thickness of Y 2 O 3 . Therefore, Y 2 O 3 can be used as a potential saturable absorber candidate for in-depth research and application.

We report a novel, to the best of our knowledge, mode-tunable optical vortex generation method based on a mirror curvature dynamically controlled Z-shaped resonant cavity, a mode conversion beamline, and a reference laser beamline. By changing the mirror curvature of an intra-cavity deformable mirror (DM) at a certain pumping voltage and current, various Hermite-Gaussian (HG) mode beams were obtained in the Z-shaped resonant cavity of a laser diode pumped Yb:CALGO laser. The vortex beams were realized finally by using an external cavity astigmatism converter. In the experiment, the dynamic tuning of the 1st to 9th order HG mode beams and Laguerre-Gaussian mode vortex beams carrying different orbital angular momenta, ranging from 1 ℏ to 9 ℏ were achieved by dynamically adjusting the driving voltage of the DM.

Structured illumination microscopy (SIM) has attracted considerable interest in super-resolution, live-cell imaging because of its low light dose and high imaging speed. Obtaining a high-quality reconstruction image in SIM depends on the precise determination of the parameters of the fringe illumination pattern. The image recombination transform (IRT) algorithm is superior to other algorithms in obtaining the precise initial phase without any approximation, which is promising to provide a considerable solution to address the difficulty of initial phase estimation at low-modulation-depth conditions. However, the IRT algorithm only considers a phase shift of π∕2, which limits its applications in general scenarios. In this letter, we present a general form of IRT algorithm suitable for arbitrary phase shifts, providing a powerful tool for parameter estimation in low signal-to-noise cases. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the enhanced IRT algorithm, we constructed a multicolor, structured illumination microscope and studied at super-resolution, the cargo traffic in HRPE cells, and monitored the movement of mitochondrial structures and microtubules in COS-7 cells. The custom SIM system using the enhanced IRT algorithm allows multicolor capability and a low excitation intensity fluorescence imaging less than 1 W/cm 2 . Cancer is the second leading cause of mortality globally, while cancer metastasis, which accounts for about 90% of cancer-related mortality, presents an extremely poor prognosis. Thus, various nanomedicines were designed and synthesized for cancer treatment, but nanomaterials could lead to endothelial leakiness and consequently facilitate intravasation and extravasation of cancer cells to form circulating tumor cells (CTCs), which were regarded as the potential metastatic seeds, possibly accelerating cancer metastasis. Neither possible metastatic sites were observed nor rare CTCs could be measured using common methods at the early stage of cancer metastasis, it is urgent to explore new technology to dynamically monitor nanomedicine promoted cancer metastasis with high sensitivity, which would be beneficial for cancer treatment as well as design and synthesis of nanomedicine. Herein, a novel optical biopsy tool i.e. in vivo flow cytometry (IVFC) was constructed to noninvasively and real-time monitor CTCs of tumor-bearing mice treated with various concentrations of Au nanoparticles. Super-resolution (SR) fluorescence microscopy that breaks through the diffraction barrier has drawn great interest in biomedical research. However, obtaining a high precision three-dimensional distribution of the specimen in a short time still remains a challenging task for existing techniques. In this paper, we propose a super-resolution fluorescence microscopy with axial localization capability by combining multifocal structured illumination microscopy with a hybrid detection PSF composed of a Gaussian PSF and a double-helix PSF. A modified reconstruction scheme is presented to accommodate the new hybrid PSF. This method can not only recover the lateral super-resolution image of the specimen but also retain the specimen's depth map within a range of 600 nm with an axial localization precision of 20.8 nm. The performance of this approach is verified by testing fluorescent beads and tubulin in 293-cells. Resonator fiber-optic gyros (RFOGs) are one of the most promising candidates for next-generation inertial rotation sensors. The frequency servo loop is used to lock the laser frequency to the resonance frequency of fiber ring resonator via adjusting the laser diode current, which increases accompanying intensity variation and induces RFOG drift. RFOG output compensation using a bias-sampling technique is proposed to suppress intensity error. The linear relationship between the RFOG output and bias is verified by theory and experimental results, and the bias-sampling compensation technique by monitoring the bias signal is analyzed in detail. With the compensation technique, intensity error is significantly suppressed, and the RFOG bias stability is effectively improved from 127.2 to 7.4 deg/h, which demonstrates tactical-grade performance.

Iodine-doped polyvinyl alcohol (IDPVA) film has been widely used as a plastic polarizer due to its great linear dichroism. We found that the anisotropic character of the plastic polarizer can be permanently damaged upon exposure of high intensity femtosecond laser pulses. This process is a two-photon-induced chemical reaction and denominated as two-photon-induced isotropy (TPII). The TPII effect can form a high polarization contrast on the base of the original IDPVA films. With this property, polarization-sensitive diffractive optical elements are fabricated in IDPVA films. The low cost of the IDPVA film and the high polarization contrast of TPII make it a promising new candidate for femtosecond laser fabrication of polarization-selective optical elements.

Benefitting from the development of commercial spatial light modulator (SLM), holographic optical tweezers (HOT) have emerged as a powerful tool for life science, material science and particle physics. The calculation of computer-generated holograms (CGH) for generating multi-focus arrays plays a key role in HOT for trapping of a bunch of particles in parallel. To realize dynamic 3D manipulation, we propose a new tilted-plane GS algorithm for fast generation of multiple foci. The multi-focal spots with a uniformity of 99% can be generated in a tilted plane. The computation time for a CGH with 512×512 pixels is less than 0.1 second. We demonstrated the power of the algorithm by simultaneously trapping and rotating silica beads with a 7×7 spots array in three dimensions. The presented algorithm is expected as a powerful kernel of HOT.

Wide-field microscopy (WFM) is broadly used in experimental studies of biological specimens. However, combining the out-of-focus signals with the in-focus plane reduces the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and axial resolution of the image. Therefore, structured illumination microscopy (SIM) with white light illumination has been used to obtain full-color 3D images, which can capture high SNR optically-sectioned images with improved axial resolution and natural specimen colors. Nevertheless, this full-color SIM (FC-SIM) has a data acquisition burden for 3D-image reconstruction with a shortened depth-of-field, especially for thick samples such as insects and large-scale 3D imaging using stitching techniques. In this paper, we propose a deep-learning-based method for full-color WFM, i.e. , FC-WFM-Deep, which can reconstruct high-quality full-color 3D images with an extended optical sectioning capability directly from the FC-WFM z -stack data. Case studies of different specimens with a specific imaging system are used to illustrate this method. Consequently, the image quality achievable with this FC-WFM-Deep method is comparable to the FC-SIM method in terms of 3D information and spatial resolution, while the reconstruction data size is 21-fold smaller and the in-focus depth is doubled. This technique significantly reduces the 3D data acquisition requirements without losing detail and improves the 3D imaging speed by extracting the optical sectioning in the depth-of-field. In order to satisfy the requirements of laser frequency tuning ratio (FTR) measurement, experimental equipment based on a hollow photonic crystal fiber resonator (HPCFR) is proposed in this paper. First, the principle scheme of the equipment consisting of HPCFR is designed, and the resonance curves of the HPCFR are theoretically analyzed, calculated, and simulated; second, the transmissive HPCFR sample is fabricated and the resonance curve is obtained; eventually, the experimental results from the established laser FTR experimental setup demonstrate that the FTRs of a narrow-linewidth fiber laser and semiconductor laser are 17.6 MHz/V and 30.9 MHz/mA, respectively, which are basically in accordance with the factory parameters of the lasers. This work shows that the FTR experimental equipment via HPCFR has the advantages of high precision and good long-term stability.

A resonator fiber-optic gyro (RFOG) is being pursued because of its theoretical potential to meet navigation-grade performance with small size, high precision, and lower cost. The stability of the RFOG operation is based on the synchronization of laser frequency to the fiber ring resonator (FRR) resonance frequency. Frequency tracking out-of-lock will lead to peak pulse and zero-bias change at the output of the RFOG, which seriously degrades the performance. First, the influence mechanism of frequency tracking out-of-lock is analyzed. The change of current and temperature in frequency tracking and the symmetry change caused by backscatter and polarization are the main reasons for the peak pulse and zero-bias error. Second, a scheme of out-of-lock control of the RFOG based on temperature closed-loop operation using digital signal processing is proposed. The improved scheme, signal processing, and implementation method are investigated in detail. Finally, a RFOG prototype is assembled and tested, and 10 min tracking of the laser frequency to the FRR's single-resonance frequency is realized by temperature closed-loop operation. The static performance of the RFOG over 1 h shows that the RFOG output errors caused by frequency tracking out-of-lock are successfully eliminated. The output peak pulse is reduced from 3000 to 200 deg/h, the zero bias is eliminated from 50 to 600 deg/h to 0, and the bias stability of the RFOG is improved from 15.2 to 1.85 deg/h, which indicates a remarkable advance in the performance of the RFOG to satisfy civil navigation application requirements.

Due to the propagation-invariant and self-healing properties, nondiffracting beams are highly attractive in optical trapping. However, little attention has been paid to investigating optical guiding of microparticles in nondiffracting beams generated by high-numerical-aperture (NA) optics with direct visualization. In this letter, we report a technique for direct observation and characterization of optical guiding of microparticles in a tight focusing system. With this technique, we observed a parabolic particle guiding trajectory with a longitudinal distance of more than 100µm and a maximal lateral deviation of 20 µm when using Airy beams. We also realized the tilted-path transport of microparticles with controllable guiding direction using tilted zeroth-order quasi-Bessel beams. For an NA of the focusing lens equal to 0.95, we achieved the optical guiding of microparticles along a straight path with a tilt angle of up to 18.8° with respect to the optical axis over a distance of 300 µm. Importantly, quantitative measurement of particle's motion was readily accessed by measuring the particle's position and velocity during the transport process. The reported technique for direct visualization and characterization of the guided particles will find its potential applications in optical trapping and guiding with novel nondiffracting beams or accelerating beams.

A chromatic dispersion (CD) immune microwave photonic phase shifter (MPPS) based on double-sideband (DSB) modulation is proposed and demonstrated. An optical spectrum processor introduces the phase shift to the MPPS. The DSB signals along two orthogonal polarizations are demodulated to two RF signals with both quadrature amplitude and phase items, transferring the CD-induced power fading to the phase item of the synthetic RF signals. Experimental results show that the RF signals over 14-25 GHz obtain random phase shift in 360° range without a power fading point (PFP) after passing through a dispersion compensation fiber with CD of -331  ps/nm. The phase variation and power variation of the phase-shifted signal are <±5.7° and <±0.9  dB, respectively, at the original PFP at 16 GHz.

Various optical instruments have been developed for three-dimensional (3D) surface topography, including the white light interference, reflectance confocal microscopes, and digital holographic microscopes, etc. However, the steep local slope of objects may cause the light to be reflected in a way that it will not be captured by the objective lens because of the finite collection angle of the objective. To solve this "shadow problem," we report a method to enlarge the collection angle range of optical sectioning structured illumination microscopy by capturing sectioned images of the objects from multiple angle of views. We develop a multi-view image fusion algorithm to reconstruct a single 3D image. Using this method, we detect previously invisible details whose slopes are beyond the collection angle of the objective. The proposed approach is useful for height map measurement and quantitative analyses in a variety of fields, such as biology, materials science, microelectronics, etc.

A photonic microwave phase-coded pulse generator is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on the principle of vector sum. The key component of the proposed pulse generator is an integrated polarization-division multiplexing Mach-Zehnder modulator (PDM-MZM) and a 90° hybrid coupler. By properly setting the data sequences applied to the specially biased PDM-MZM, binary and quaternary phase-coded microwave pulses (PCMPs) that are free from the background signals can be generated. Since no filters and polarization adjustment are involved, the proposed pulse generator is characterized by a simple structure, low-loss, flexible frequency tunability and high long-term stability. The experimental results show that background-free 4 Gb/s Barker and Frank PCMPs at 18 GHz and 2 Gb/s Barker and Frank PCMPs at 24 GHz are successfully generated. The calculated pulse compression ratio and peak-to-side lobe ratio are in good agreement with the theoretical values.

In this paper, we propose an all-optical system for the generation of binary phase-coded microwave pulses without baseband components. The scheme is based on a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM). By properly applying the coding signals and the microwave signals to the precisely biased DPMZM, accurate π phase shift binary phase-coded microwave pulses without baseband components can be generated. The proposed system has an extremely simple and stable all-optical structure, leading to a large frequency tuning range and a high signal quality. The operation of the system is very easy. The generation of the 2-Gbit/s 14-GHz and 4-Gbit/s 16-GHz binary phase-coded microwave pulses under different coding signal amplitudes and microwave carrier powers are experimental verified. The results show that the proposed binary phase-coded microwave pulses generation system has high quality and performance.

We found an obvious mismatch between a statement in the main text and the corresponding figure (Figs. 8(a) and 8(b)) in paper [Opt. Express24, 29537 (2016).10.1364/OE.24.02953728059340]. In page 9, there is a sentence: "The observation lines can be seen in the inserts in Figs. 8(a)-8(c). As can be seen, the potential lines along the lines x = 10 mm and x = -10 mm are straight, which means that no distortion for the external field occurs". However, the potential lines along the lines x = 10 mm and x = -10 mm in the Figs. 8(a) and 8(b) are not straight obviously, and the wrong results have been used inadvertently. This mistake may occur in the process of revising or publication. It should be noted that our sentence or statement is right and the corresponding figure is corrected.

A photonic microwave frequency shift keying (FSK) signal generator is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on an equivalent photonic switch (EPS). The EPS is constructed using a polarization-multiplexing dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (PM-DMZM). By properly controlling the data sequences and RF signals applied to the PM-DMZM, microwave FSK signals with flexible frequency intervals can be obtained. The proposed FSK signal generator features the advantages of a simple structure, low loss, good stability, and great frequency tunability. In addition, the proposed setup can also be easily reconfigured to generate microwave amplitude shift keying and phase shift keying signals. The experimental results show that 2 Gb/s at 5/14 GHz and 1 Gb/s at 6/20 GHz microwave FSK signals are successfully generated, after transmission over 5 km single-mode fiber. The required received optical power at 7% forward error correction threshold is only -14.48  dBm.

Silver nanowires are widely used in catalysts, surface enhanced Raman scattering, microelectronic equipment, thin film solar cells, microelectrodes and biosensors for their excellent conductivity, heat transfer, low surface resistance, high transparency and good biocompatibility. However, the optical nonlinearity of silver nanowires has not been further explored yet. In this paper, three silver nanowire samples with different concentrations are produced via a typical hydrothermal method. Their applications to fiber lasers are implemented to prove the optical nonlinearity of silver nanowires for the first time. Based on three kinds of silver nanowires, the mode-locked operation of fiber lasers is successfully realized. Moreover, the fiber laser based on the silver nanowire with a concentration of 2 mg/L demonstrates the shortest pulse duration of 149.3 fs. The experiment not only proves the optical nonlinearity of silver nanowires, but also has some enlightenment on the selection of the optimum concentration of silver nanowires in the consideration of ultrashort pulse output.

Superfluorescence emission around 391 nm is generated when nitrogen molecules are irradiated by a strong 800-nm pump laser and a delayed seed laser. The emission corresponds to the transition between N2+(B 2 Σu+,ν ″ =0) and N2+(X 2 Σg+,ν=0). When another weak 800-nm probe laser is injected and scanned after the pump laser, the superfluorescence intensity is observed to exhibit periodical modulation. The period is determined to be ~2.63 fs, corresponding to the transition frequency between N2+(A 2 Π u ,ν ' =2) and N2+(X 2 Σg+,ν=0). Based on theoretical derivation, these observations can be attributed to the laser-induced population transfer and polarization variation between the relevant electronic states of ionized nitrogen molecules.

Singly ionized nitrogen molecules in ambient air pumped by 800 nm femtosecond laser give rise to superradiant emission. Here, we study this superradiance by injecting a pair of resonant seeding pulses at different intensity ratios inside the nitrogen gas plasma. Strong modulation of the 391.4 nm superradiant emission with a period of 1.3 fs is observed when the delay between the two seeding pulses is finely tuned. The modulation contrast is increased and then decreased with the delay time when the second seed pulse is stronger than the first one, and the maximum modulation contrast occurs at longer delay time when the second seeding pulse is stronger. This reveals the increase of the macroscopic polarization with time after the seeding pulse. Moreover, these observations provide a new level of control on the "air lasing" based on nitrogen ions, which can find potential applications in optical remote sensing.

Distributed coherent aperture radar (DCAR) is an important direction for next-generation radar due to its high sensitivity. The challenge to realize DCAR is the synchronization among geographically distributed radar units. We propose an optical network for DCAR synchronization. The proposed network achieves functions of phase-coded pulse generation, time synchronization, and phase synchronization with the help of microwave photonics techniques. Proof-of-concept experiments are conducted in fiber and space transmission scenarios. The combined radar beams have negligible energy loss when synchronization is achieved.

Imaging through scattering media has been a long standing challenge in many disciplines. One of the promising solutions to address the challenge is the wavefront shaping technique, in which the phase distortion due to a scattering medium is corrected by a phase modulation device such as a spatial light modulator (SLM). However, the wide-field imaging speed is limited either by the feedback-based optimization to search the correction phase or by the update rate of SLMs. In this report, we introduce a new method called digital holographic wavefront correction, in which the correction phase is determined by a single-shot off-axis holography. The correction phase establishes the so-called "scattering lens", which allows any objects to be imaged through scattering media; in our case, the "scattering lens" is a digital one established through computational methods. As no SLM is involved in the imaging process, the imaging speed is significantly improved. We have demonstrated that moving objects behind scattering media can be recorded at the speed of 2.8 fps with each frame corrected by the updated correction phase while the image contrast is maintained as high as 0.9. The image speed can potentially reach the video rate if the computing power is sufficiently high. We have also demonstrated that the digital wavefront correction method also works when the light intensity is low, which implicates its potential usefulness in imaging dynamic processes in biological tissues.

The perfect optical vortex (POV), the ring size being independent of its topological charge, has found potential applications in optical tweezers and optical communications. In this Letter, we report a new kind of POV, termed as double-ring POV (DR-POV), whose diameters of the two rings are independent of topological charge. We theoretically demonstrate that such a vortex is the Fourier transform of an azimuthally polarized Bessel beam. Experimental results agree well with theoretical prediction. We further investigate the vortex nature of the DR-POV through an interferometric method, showing that the two rings of the vortex have the same topological charge value (magnitude and sign). The specular properties of the DR-POV may find application in optical tweezers, such as trapping and rotating of low-refractive-index particles in the dark region between the two rings.

As a saturable absorption material, the heterostructure with the van der Waals structure has been paid much attention in material science. In general, the heterogeneous combination is able to neutralize, or even exceed, the individual material's advantages in some aspects. In this paper, which describes the magnetron sputtering deposition method, the tapered fiber is coated by the MoS 2 -WS 2 heterostructure, and the MoS 2 -WS 2 heterostructure saturable absorber (SA) is fabricated. The modulation depth of the prepared MoS 2 -WS 2 heterostructure SA is measured to be 19.12%. Besides, the theoretical calculations for the band gap and carrier mobility of the MoS 2 -WS 2 heterostructure are provided. By employing the prepared SA, a stable and passively erbium-doped fiber laser is implemented. The generated pulse duration of 154 fs is certified to be the shortest among all fiber lasers based on transition mental dichalcogenides. Results in this paper provide the new direction for the fabrication of ultrafast photon modulation devices.

High-resolution 3D imaging technology has found a number of applications in many biological fields. However, the existing 3D imaging tools are often too time-consuming to use on large-scale specimens, such as centimeter-sized insects. In addition, most 3D imaging systems discard the natural color information of the specimens. To surmount these limitations, we present a structured illumination-based approach capable of delivering large field-of-view three-dimensional images. With this approach, 580nm lateral resolution full-color 3D images and 3D morphological data in the size range of typical insect samples can be obtained. This method provides a promising approach that can be used to support many different types of entomological investigations, including taxonomy, evolution, bionics, developmental biology, functional morphology, paleontology, forestry, etc.

Complex diffusive scattering media pose significant challenges for light focusing as well as optical imaging to be implemented in practice. Recently, it has been demonstrated that the wavefront shaping technique can be applied to realize focusing and imaging through scattering medium. Here we report dynamic optical manipulation of particles through turbid media by employing the interleaved segment wavefront correction method, which is an improved genetic algorithm providing faster convergence speed and higher peak to background ratio. Manipulating micro-beads behind a scattering medium along both one and two dimensional predesigned trajectories in real time has been successfully demonstrated.

An optically controlled system for generating and continuously steering radio frequency (RF) signals with double orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The optical carrier's utilization efficiency can be doubled through the distinct electro-optical modulation, which is based on two single-sideband modulation operations on a single optical carrier through a customized dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator. A constructive antenna phase feeding method of a circular antenna array for collectively forming and steering an OAM radio beam is proposed and illustrated. A proof-of-concept experiment is conducted to generate and steer a dual-mode RF-OAM beam to two different two-dimensional (2D) directions, independently and simultaneously. One 17 GHz OAM beam with mode L=1 is continuously steered to 2D directions (:, 0°, 0°), (:, 0°, 1.70°), (:, 0°, 3.87°), (:, 0°, 6.17°), and(:, 0°, 7.80°), with vortex properties, where ":" means "any value of." Meanwhile, the 19 GHz OAM beam with mode L=-1 carried is steered from (:, 0°, 0°) to (:, 0°, -6.72°), and the constellations are obtained successfully.

A Hilbert-transform-based broadband chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation scheme for radio-over-fiber links is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By constructing a Hilbert transform path, CD-induced phase shifts, which initially lead to periodic power fading of the output RF signals, are transferred to the phases of the RF signals. As a result, the powers of the output RF signals are free from the effect of CD in a broadband frequency range. Experimental results show that a flat normalized amplitude-frequency response is actualized within 2-24 GHz, with only 3.02 dB/4.27 dB power fluctuation after transmission over an equivalent of a 38.6 km/43.6 km single-mode fiber. Besides, compared with a conventional dispersive path, the proposed CD compensation scheme significantly improves the third-order spurious-free dynamic range by 23.60 dB.

Graphene-based and metal-based surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waveguides have attracted intense research interest because they can be used as basic components to propagate electromagnetic (EM) waves in future optical integrated systems. We propose a directional coupler, which can couple EM energy from a multilayer-graphene-based cylindrical long-range SPP waveguide to a metal-based cylindrical hybrid SPP waveguide in the mid-infrared range. This coupler exhibits relatively low coupling length, high coupling efficiency, low insertion loss, and high extinction ratio after adjustment of the wave vector mismatch of the two waveguides. Moreover, this coupler is tolerant to practical fabrication errors like misalignment of graphene layres, and can effectively work in the range of Fermi energy Ef > 0.6 eV when the mobility of graphene varies from 10000 to 800 cm 2 /Vs. Hence, the coupler offers potential applications in signal routing and information exchange between graphene-based and metal-based SPP waveguides in photonic integrated circuits.

Fourier ptychography (FP) is a promising computational imaging technique that overcomes the physical space-bandwidth product (SBP) limit of a conventional microscope by applying angular-varied illuminations. However, to date, the effective imaging numerical aperture (NA) achievable with a commercial LED board is still limited to the range of 0.3-0.7 with a 4 × /0.1NA objective due to the geometric constraint with the declined illumination intensities and attenuated signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Thus the highest achievable half-pitch resolution is usually constrained between 500-1000 nm, which cannot meet the requirements of high-resolution biomedical imaging applications. Although it is possible to improve the resolution by using a high-NA objective lens, the FP approach is less appealing as the decrease of field-of-view (FOV) will far exceed the improvement of spatial resolution in this case. In this paper, we initially present a subwavelength resolution Fourier ptychography (SRFP) platform with a hemispherical digital condenser to provide high-angle programmable plane-wave illuminations of 0.95NA, attaining a 4 × /0.1NA objective with the final effective imaging performance of 1.05NA at a half-pitch resolution of 244 nm with the incident wavelength of 465 nm across a wide FOV of 14.60 mm 2 , corresponding to a SBP of 245 megapixels. Our work provides an essential step of FP towards high-throughput imaging applications.

Holographic optical tweezers are a powerful optical trapping and manipulation tool in numerous applications such as life science and colloidal physics. However, imperfections in the spatial light modulator and optical components of the system will introduce detrimental aberrations to the system, thereby degrading the trapping performance significantly. To address this issue, we develop an aberration correction technique by using a high-order vortex as the correction metric. The optimal Zernike polynomial coefficients for quantifying the system aberrations are determined by comparing the distorted vortex and the ideal one. Efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated by comparing the optical trap intensity distribution, trap stiffness, and particle dynamics in a Gaussian trap and an optical vortex trap, before and after aberration corrections.
