In previous works, it has been shown that reservoir computing (RC) systems using a laser subject to a delayed optical feedback and stabilized by an injected signal may be highly sensitive to the feedback phase. In this Letter, we show that a RC system using a single quantum cascade laser subject to a delayed optical feedback but without injection is robust to the feedback phase for a large range of values of the parameters.

With the development of new applications using semiconductor ring lasers (SRLs) subject to optical feedback, the stability properties of their outputs becomes a crucial issue. We propose a systematic bifurcation analysis in order to properly identify the best parameter ranges for either steady or self-pulsating periodic regimes. Unlike conventional semiconductor lasers, we show that SRLs exhibit both types of outputs for large and well defined ranges of the feedback strength. We determine the stability domains in terms of the pump parameter and the feedback phase. We find that the feedback phase is a key parameter to achieve a stable steady output. We demonstrate that the self-pulsating regime results from a particular Hopf bifurcation mechanism referred to as bifurcation bridges. These bridges connect two distinct external cavity modes and are fully stable, a scenario that was not possible for diode lasers under the same conditions.

We demonstrate a tunable all-optical gating phenomenon in a single-section quantum dot laser. The free-running operation of the device is emission from the excited state. Optical injection into the ground state of the material can induce a switch to emission from the ground state with complete suppression of the excited state. If the master laser is detuned from the ground-state emitting frequency, a periodic train of ground-state dropouts can be obtained. These dropouts act as gates for excited-state pulsations: during the dropout, the gate is opened and gain is made available for the excited state, and the gate is closed again when the dropout ends. Numerical simulations using a rate equation model are in excellent agreement with experimental results.

With conventional semiconductor lasers undergoing external optical feedback, a chaotic output is typically observed even for moderate levels of the feedback strength. In this paper we examine single mode quantum dot lasers under strong optical feedback conditions and show that an entirely new dynamical regime is found consisting of spontaneous mode-locking via a resonance between the relaxation oscillation frequency and the external cavity repetition rate. Experimental observations are supported by detailed numerical simulations of rate equations appropriate for this laser type. The phenomenon constitutes an entirely new mode-locking mechanism in semiconductor lasers.

We investigate the square-wave (SW) self-modulation output of an edge-emitting diode laser subject to polarization rotated optical feedback in detail, both experimentally and theoretically. Our experimental results show that the 2τ-periodic SW, where τ is the delay of the feedback, coexists with other SW oscillations of shorter periods. We have found that these new SWs are specific harmonics of the fundamental one and their periods are P(n)≃2τ/(1+2n), where n is an integer. Numerical simulations and analytical studies of laser rate equations confirm the multistability of SW solutions. By adding a weak conventional optical feedback, we show that the switching between the different periodic SWs can be easily controlled. The delay of this feedback control is the key parameter determining the harmonic that is stabilized. Numerical simulations corroborate the effectiveness of our experimental control scheme.

The rate equations for a laser with a polarization rotated optical feedback are investigated both numerically and analytically. The frequency detuning between the polarization modes is now taken into account and we review all earlier studies in order to motivate the range of values of the fixed parameters. We find that two basic Hopf bifurcations leading to either stable sustained relaxation or square-wave oscillations appear in the detuning versus feedback rate diagram. We also identify two key parameters describing the differences between the total gains of the two polarization modes and discuss their effects on the periodic square-waves.

Mode-locked optically pumped semiconductor disk lasers (SDLs) are in strong demand for applications in bio-medical photonics, chemistry, space communications and non-linear optics. However, the wider spread of SDLs was constrained as they are operated in high repetition rates above 200 MHz due to short carrier lifetimes in the semiconductors. Here we demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that it is possible to overcome the limitation of fast carrier relaxation and show significant reduction of repetition rate down to 85.7 MHz by exploiting phase-amplitude coupling effect. In addition, a low repetition rate SDL serves as a test-bed for bound soliton state previously unknown for semiconductor devices. The breakthrough to sub-100 MHz repetition rate will open a whole new window of development opportunities.

The square-wave response of edge-emitting diode lasers subject to a delayed polarization-rotated optical feedback is studied in detail. Specifically, the polarization state of the feedback is rotated such that the natural laser mode is coupled into the orthogonal, unsupported mode. Square-wave self-modulated polarization intensities oscillating in antiphase are observed experimentally. We find numerically that these oscillations naturally appear for a broad range of values of parameters, provided that the feedback is sufficiently strong and the differential losses in the normally unsupported polarization mode are small. We then investigate the laser equations analytically and find that the square-wave oscillations are the result of a bifurcation phenomenon.

We consider a double-pass ring cavity with nonlinear incoherent optical feedback and analyze its response when it is driven by a continuous laser beam. This particular cavity is equivalent, in the temporal domain, to a simple spatial-pattern-generating system made from a Kerr slice and a feedback mirror. After formulating the evolution equations, we investigate the behavior of small-amplitude solutions and obtain an expression for the round-trip gains. We then explore the important effect of dispersion in the nonlinear medium. Finally, we show that stable modes are possible by solving numerically the full nonlinear equations.

Self-pulsing in semiconductor lasers containing a saturable absorber is well documented. We propose an alternative mechanism leading to self-pulsing in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers. We specifically consider waveguiding effects and determine the conditions for self-pulsing. Our theoretical and numerical results agree with experimental observations reported by Willemsen et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 77, 3514 (2000)].

We demonstrate numerically that low-frequency fluctuations (LFF's) observed in a laser diode subjected to a first optical feedback with a short delay are suppressed by means of an adequate second optical feedback. The general idea of this technique is based on the observation that second feedback can suppress the antimodes that are responsible for the crises in the LFF regime. Furthermore, we observe that the second optical feedback can steer an unstable laser that is biased near threshold into a stable regime.
